I recently installed ubuntu 10.04 LTS and formatted my windows 7 hdd, but the windows 7 entry is still showing in grub. How can I remove the entry from grub?

I have two Windows partitions installed on a HDD, as well as a third partition where I have hundreds of programs installed. I've installed all the programs with my Windows 7 RC, but now that the Release Candidate is coming to an end I have to switch over to my other Windows installation.
Is there an easy way to transfer all of my programs registry entries and other references to my new Windows installation, or do I have to reinstall all of my programs on my new partition?
Thanks.
I have a quite specific question concerning description of thermal sensors of my notebbok Thinkpad Edge E320.
I have a debian linux installed with lm_sensors package and running command sensors show eight different values without any description of course (temp1 through temp6). I would like to know which one is which (cpu, gpu, hdd, etc.)
Using google I didn't find any specific material concerning this exact model. Coult someone point me in the right direction?
Thank you in advance.
I want to install Win Xp on my Ideapad Z 570 laptop but i always get blue screen with message with some drive related problem which asks me to run CHKDSK command. I tried with that but no luck. Is there any way i can install Win Xp with SP 2 ?
Edit: i searched across the sites and came to know there could be some Compatibility problems, and i could fix it by setting HDD mode to IDE; will it solve the problem?
I need to organise an external HDD such that there is no more than 500 folders on it.
Ubuntu's "Properties" pane shows only the file count, not the folder count.
Is there a simple CLI line that will tell me the number of subdirectories?
Thanks!
Hi,
Not sure whether this question belongs here, I hope so. I have just bought a motherboard and CPU.
I have installed the CPU, cooler and connected to CPUFAN on the MB. I have plugged the power supply to MB and the cable from "ON" button to pins named "PWR" and the LEDs.
However when I turn on the PC, both HDD and POWER leds are continously on and the PC cannot be turned out. What could I be missing?
How can i generate a list of files in a directory [e.g.: "/mnt/hdd/PUB/"] ordered by the files modification time? [in descending order, the oldest modified file is at the lists end]
ls -A -lRt would be great: https://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=AzuSVmrJ
but if a file is changed in a directory it lists the full directory...so the pastebined link isn't good [i don't want a list ordered by "directories", i need a "per file" ordered list]
os: openwrt..[no perl - not enough space for it :( + no "stat", or "file" command]
Thank you!
I have a windows 2012 server with 3 storage spaces set up, each containing a mirrored pair of 2TB drives.
What is the best way to set up alerting so that i receive an alert when a physical disk fails?
Ideally i would like these alerts to be sent via email to a pre-defined address.
The current server set up is as follows:
Intel Core i7 2600k 3.4GHz Socket 1155 8MB Cache
Asrock H77 PRO4/MVP Socket 1155 VGA DVI HDMI 7.1 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard
16GB RAM
1 x 60GB SSD (OS)
6 x 2TB SATA III 7200 HDD (DATA)
I only have the ordinary cooling mechanism of a computer. 1 fan for the power supply and two fans that share the same cable.
Can benchmarking my computer lead to burning of the processor or the ram or the hdd?
Can you give me some applications that can lead to this
I have a mount point — let it be /media/question — and two possible devices: a physical HDD and a remote NFS folder. Sometimes I plug the device in physically, in other cases I mount it via NFS.
Is there a way to specify both of them in fstab so that executing mount /media/question will preferably choose physical volume, and when it's not available — NFS?
I have Ubuntu 10.04 inside windows vista.
I'm going to install Windows seven but i don't want to loose all the softwares i have downloaded.
how can i backup my Linux in an external device(HDD, DVD ...) and take it back to my hard-disk(I want to install it outside the windows if possible)
Is there any software doing this for me?
I am using Virtual Box machine (as .vdi) on external HDD drive so I can move it between different pcs. On each PC I have created new VM machine, attached that vdi and it seems working well. However, I've noticed that during my last transfer the latest installed applications were not saved on the .vdi, which made me to loose 1 day of work. I don't remember of doing any snapshots which I could merge. Can someone give me a hint how to handle this efficiently in feature?
I want to have my system with me in another city. I know that it strongly depends of my chipset. I have P35 (Gigabyte P35DS3R). Another machine also Intel-based but chipset is G31 (MSI G31TM-P35). Is it possible that my system will start on that machine if I will plug in my hdd?
When I play any high-end game like NFS Most Wanted or FIFA 12, I get these weird things on my graphics. While playing NFS, my car has various transparent diamonds all over its body, and while playing FIFA I get these weird black lines all over the field. My PC specs are :-
AMD Athlon II X2
ASUS M4A785D-M PRO
500GB Seagate HDD
2GB DDR2 Transcend RAM 1033Mhz
ATI Radeon HD4350 512MB graphics card
Tell me if I need to provide anything else. Please help me. Thanks.
After imaging a 100GB hard drive into an image file with dd, I dd'd the image to a larger hdd
After boot get mkrootdev: label / not found
I have gone in with finnix and relabeled the partition to the same label with e2label and still have problems.
Has anyone resolved this before?
We all know that if you want to completely delete files from HDD, you have to use a special erase algorithm in order to make it impossible to read it back.
But what with the memory cards? Do they need the same algorithms to ensure that no one could read it back? (it has a completely different structure to store data, and I don't know what the case here with secure delete)
I am building a system for a friend. The potential specs are like this so far:
ASUS A8N-VM motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ @ 2.0 GHz
Any 7200RPM SATA HDD
Palit GeForce 8800GT 512MB GDDR3 PCIe
One DVD/CD combo drive
Creative SB Live! 5.1 sound card
I was wondering what wattage of power supply would be able to support this hardware. I had a 350W in mind... would that do?

Does vertical position affect hard drive?
This may be a silly question, but I have an external HDD which has a platform to keep it vertically.
My question is, does it make any problem to have it like that? Regarding the internal operation of the it I mean.
I have big problem with my computer. Configuration is:
Intel i7 + 6x2GB OCZ DDR3
Motheboard: Asus P6T Deluxe V2, HDD controller configured to AHCI
Main drive: OCZ Vertex 2 (SSD) - contains all installed programs and system
Second drive: Samsung SpinPoint - contains User profiles, ProgramData, virtual machines and databases
Third drive: Samsung SpinPoint - data drive + backups
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64
I have never had any problem with this computer until now. During weekend my computer completely crashed without any reason. Each time I tried to boot to Windows I got BSOD with message BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO and automatic restart (I didn't install any new SW or HW). But after restart main OCZ drive was disconnected (not detected by BIOS). When I turned off and on computer, the drive was again connected. It also happend every single time I tried to repair installation somehow. It ended with some error and after restart drive was disconnected. The only thing which worked was format + fresh install.
After installing almost everything I wanted to install Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate (complete installation without SQL Server Express). During installation of VS itself I always get BSOD - it is too fast so I'm not able to read description. After restart it searches for all disk drives for really long time and sometimes it changes boot drive so the system is not able to start - Bootmgr not found. After reconfiguring BIOS the system starts. There is no event describing the failure in Event viewer. Installing VS 2010 is absolutely necessary for me.
I need help with diagnostic. I need to find where is the problem - I expect that the problem is in OCZ drive or in HDD controller on motherboard but I don't know how to find it. All components still have valid warranty. Can you recommend me some approach or tools to find the problem?
Edit:
I'm still looking for source of the problem. New information is that Windows are not able to perform check disk (Chkdsk) on the SSD system drive. After restarting it always starts checking drive and in part where files are checked it fails with BSOD - BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO. After next restart and skipping check disk tests the system runs.

I currently trying to understand if my motherboard supports booting from USB flash drive or not...
In motherboard manual it written:
"First/Second/Third Boot DeviceSpecifies the boot order from the available devices. Use the up or down arrow key to select adevice and press to accept. Options are: Floppy, LS120, Hard Disk, CDROM, ZIP,USB-FDD, USB-ZIP, USB-CDROM, USB-HDD, LAN, Disabled"
Is there way to boot from 8GB USB flash drive?
I have a Mac Mini with Core Solo 1.5GHz, 512mb RAM, 60gb HDD, etc... I know, it's very old but since it's lying around here, I wanted to bump it up for general usage and some experimental iPhone development. Also, Snow Leopard can't be installed as it doesn't have enough RAM. I browsed around but I'm not sure if this Mac Mini's motherboard accepts a Core2Duo (at least a 2.0GHz). If anyone could inform me which generation of Core2Duo it still accepts, I'd be grateful.
