Is it possible to see the details of what is going on behind the scenes/screen during booting of Windows XP? Something like the dump that is shown when booting up in safe mode.
I'm trying to view/add/edit MS Outlook 2007 tasks on a work PDA running Windows Mobile 6 Professional (sync'ed with MS Exchange 2007).
1) is this possible? From a quick Google search I can't find anything... However I may be missing something obvious.
2) if not, any ideas about work-arounds?
Thanks
I have a few extensions next to my URL bar in chrome on windows 7. When I press any of them, or even the bookmark star, the text box that pops up is clear. I am using the following extensions: ablock plus, googleTranslate, firebugLite, ghostery, avastWebRep, Ultimate UserAgent switcher, Web developer toolbar, desprotetor de links, DNT plus, and WOT.
I am set to block popups but not javascript in chrome and have a blackout theme installed.
any ideas?
My wife has managed to buy a Dell laptop she was using at her ex-employer that just went bust. The problem with it is the OS (Windows XP) which takes ages to boot and is generally disproportionally slow to the hardware of the machine. So my aim is to sacrifice a day and reinstall it.
The problem I am slightly worried about is the licensing/registration/activation hell. Apart from the sticker (with WinXP license key), the laptop has no other paperwork proving this license is legitimate. I believe this was originally an OEM license. Unfortunately, I don't have the the installation CD.
This computer also has MS Office installed (which I would like to retain) but it none of MS Office apps would launch due to some obscure error complaining about lack of free disk space (which computer has plenty of). I have absolutely no clue what kind of license this MS Office was. And because the company has gone into the administration, there is no way of getting this information nor installable media.
I believe that by buying the hardware I have also acquired the software which I can use as I see fit. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Above said, my question would be:
What is the easiest way of reinstalling the XP? By easiest I mean avoiding spending my time to prove Microsoft support I've got the right to use the software (insert your computer says noooo joke here) but still being able to get to fresh virgin activated legal state of the XP. I used to work as a sysadmin many years ago so I am not afraid of any technical difficulties. The same question applies to MS Office.
I imagine the process would consist of backing up all the data, pulling some bits from the registry and using that on the fresh install. As for reinstall I'd expect to use some sort of OEM Windows repair CD from Dell, right? Are those freely available? My other box (HP) has such a thing and it can't be used on any other brand.
I'm sure somebody had to go through this licensing hell and could share his/her tips.
Thanks in advance.
Recently I've noticed my hosts file resetting itself.
D:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc (OS installed on D drive)
First time it reset it to the default, and now for the first time its completely disappeared after installing a whole bunch of updates.
I don't have any virus protection other than Microsoft's Security Essentials.
What's going on???
Is there a way to increase the font size on a Windows Help file (CHM file) with recent versions of Internet Explorer? You used to be able to, but I think after IE7 the option was removed from the UI.
Downloaded Windows 7 .iso off the net and want to install from USB key on old laptop (previously/still running XP) that has no CD/DVD drive. Here's what I've got so far:
Read the instructions in this post: http://kmwoley.com/blog/?p=345 , which were quite straight forward and clear.
Properly formatted USB key with another laptop (this one running vista), also with no DVD drive
wasn't sure how to make the USB bootable, since my .iso was downloaded and I have no DVD drive.
Any help would be much appreciated!!
The company I work for are about to give me a windows laptop, a thinkpad x200, so that I can work from home. It will have a dvi port for an external monitor via a docking station. I have a 24" iMac, can I use that as the external monitor?
Using generic Windows bluetooth drivers + Apple Wireless Mouse drivers as Bluetooth HID service. The mouse is connected. It just does not do anything. It does not show up under mice in hardware manager, just as Bluetooth HID.
Not using the Apple drivers does not work either.
I'm using a logilink BT0007
What is the step-by-step way to make a custom Windows 8 installation ?
For example, with a minimal example, I would like an image which :
Has a single user named "User"
This user has Chrome and Firefox installed
Has no link in the start screen except the desktop link
Has no buttons on the task bar
I have tried to use sysprep but I lose user settings. The CopyProfile seems to apply Administrator's settings on programmaticaly created accounts, but does not preserve local users settings accross installations.
I have VMWare Fusion 3 and Windows 7 installed, and if I leave it inactive for a few minutes and return back, it has frozen and it needs more than a few minutes to become responsive again.
I tried to find some settings about that on Fusion, but couldn't.
Is there a way to avoid this behaviour?
In the "Date and Time Properties" dialog of Windows XP (reachable by double-clicking on the time/date on the taskbar) the week in the calendar starts on Monday. I would like to change it so that it starts on Sunday. How can this be done?

Does anyone know how to tell windows 7 to bar a wireless network? It keeps logging into a random open one with no bandwidth my neighbors have instead of the good one we have here. I keep unchecking "automatically log in if available" and it keeps re-checking itself. I want it to NEVER log into this network no matter what without manual intervention. I do not want to disable auto connecting, just tell it "do not ever connect to this one without my express permission".
I recently installed Windows 7 and now cannot use my Blackberry Bold as a modem (via a USB cable):
When I query the modem it is successful. I have added the correct "at" commands.
When I try connect it says "connecting modems" but then it times out with the following error:
Error 638: The remote server is not
responding in a timely fashion.
I also have the latest desktop manager software installed.
Windows 7 requires the following specifications:
1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
Will it work at all on my old toshiba Satellite A100 PSAA8C-SK400E
Intel® Core™ Solo processor T1350 (1.86GHz, 533MHz FSB, L1 Cache 32KB/32KB, L2 Cache 2MB)
Standard Memory: 2x512 MB DDR2
Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950 with 8MB-128MB.
The main problem I can see is that the graphics is not up to it.
I just got Windows 7. However, I'm now unable to connect to the internet.
Doing the diagnosis gives me these:
There might be a problem with the driver for the Local Area Connection Adapter
The Local Area Connection 2 Adapter is disabled
How do I resolve those?
These are the things I've tried:
In cmd do ipconfig /renew
In Device Manager, go to Network Adapter. (I don't see any red exclamation marks)
When I installed Windows 8 Professional Edition I noticed that Internet Explorer 10 was missing. I tried to find some source to acquire the installer but none of the sites are providing it. One of my colleagues upgraded recently and he got the new Internet Explorer after his installation was completed. So is there a way to acquire the installer?
Update:
I should have mentioned that I was talking about the Metro version.

Is it possible to migrate the Windows XP Pro 32 bit operating system, applications etc from a USB external drive which is the recovered hard drive from that failed system to my new desktop computer with Windows7 64 bit system? In doing so, I would like to set up the new computer with the OS and all general applications on the primary 1TB hard drive while the secondary 1TB hard drive to have nothing else but graphics programs and gaming applications complete with their related files and add-ons. What will I need to accomplish this task efficiently and economically?
Every time I reboot the computer, the printer in Windows 7 XP mode goes offline. I have to go back into the full XP mode and attach the printer again to make it work. I have the settings set to automatically attach the printer, but it doesn't appear to be working. Any ideas what might make it automatically re-attach? Does anyone see this working?
Hi,

I have windows 7 bootable disk

There is a remote filesystem I can reach through ssh. On Linux, there are several ways of dealing with it. I like sshfs, because with it I can work with the remote files the same way as with my local files.
Is there any similar to Windows, that can map a network drive through ssh? The best I can use is WinSCP, which is good, but not good enough.
When Spotify is running, it shows a little icon in the activity field. On most operative systems, closing the Spotify window minimizes the player to the activity window, freeing up space in the task bar - but not in Windows 7, it seems.
I think it's a little uneccessary to have two icons in almost the same place that does almost the same thing. Is there anyway to hide a program icon from the task bar, in this case specifically Spotify?
