  • Cocos2D - Detecting collision

    - by Grace
    I am a beginner in cocos2d and im facing a problem with detecting collision for my coins. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. So basically, im creating a game which the user (ship) have to avoid the obstacles and collect coins on the way. The collision of the obstacle works well but not for the coins. I was thinking maybe the loops for creating many coins is the problem but im not sure. Can anyone help? My codes: - (void)update:(ccTime)dt{ double curTime = CACurrentMediaTime(); if (curTime > _nextBridgeSpawn) { float randSecs = [self randomValueBetween:3.0 andValue:5.0]; _nextBridgeSpawn = randSecs + curTime; float randX = [self randomValueBetween:50 andValue:500]; float randDuration = [self randomValueBetween:8.0 andValue:10.0]; CCSprite *bridge = [_bridge objectAtIndex:_nextBridge]; _nextBridge++; if (_nextBridge >= _bridge.count) _nextBridge = 0; [bridge stopAllActions]; bridge.position = ccp(winSize.width/2, winSize.height); bridge.visible = YES; [bridge runAction:[CCSequence actions: [CCMoveBy actionWithDuration:randDuration position:ccp(0, -winSize.height)], [CCCallFuncN actionWithTarget:self selector:@selector(setInvisible:)], nil]]; this is where i declare my coins (continued from the update method) int randCoin = [self randomValueBetween:0 andValue:5]; _coin = [[CCArray alloc] initWithCapacity:randCoin]; for(int i = 0; i < randCoin; ++i) { coin = [CCSprite spriteWithFile:@"coin.png"]; coin.visible = NO; [self addChild:coin]; [_coin addObject:coin]; } float randCoinX = [self randomValueBetween:winSize.width/5 andValue:winSize.width - (border.contentSize.width *2)]; float randCoinY = [self randomValueBetween:100 andValue:700]; float randCoinPlace = [self randomValueBetween:30 andValue:60]; for (int i = 0; i < _coin.count; ++i) { CCSprite *coin2 = [_coin objectAtIndex:i]; coin2.position = ccp(randCoinX, (bridge.position.y + randCoinY) + (randCoinPlace *i)); coin2.visible = YES; [coin2 runAction:[CCSequence actions: [CCMoveBy actionWithDuration:randDuration position:ccp(0, -winSize.height-2000)], [CCCallFuncN actionWithTarget:self selector:@selector(setInvisible:)], nil]]; } } this is to check for collision (also in the update method) for (CCSprite *bridge in _bridge) { if (!bridge.visible) continue; if (CGRectIntersectsRect(ship.boundingBox, bridge.boundingBox)){ bridge.visible = NO; [ship runAction:[CCBlink actionWithDuration:1.0 blinks:5]]; } } } //this is the collision for coins which only work at times for (CCSprite *coin2 in _coin) { if (!coin2.visible) continue; if (CGRectIntersectsRect(ship.boundingBox, coin2.boundingBox)) { NSLog(@"Coin collected"); coin2.visible = NO; } } } Thank you.

  • gradient coloring of an object

    - by perrakdar
I have an object(FBX format) in my project, it's a line drawn in 3D max. I want to color the line in XNA so that the color starts from a specific RGB color in both the start and end points of the line and finish in a specific RGB color.(e.x., from (255,255,255) to (128,128,128). Something like gradient coloring of an object. I need to do that programmatically, since later in my code I have to change these two specific colors a lot.

  • Amazing Jutsu (Technique)

    - by Wian_Kiya
Hy..I'm newbie here.. Please does anyone knows, how to create such a character(sprites) to have a different Style Technique and different kind of movement, so he/she can alternate many technique to defeat his/her opponent... I wanna make my 2d character his/her power had a technique like rasengan, I mean for the first the jutsu its just spining around above his/her hand and then going bigger and much bigger so can create a massive giant ball/light/swords or etc blow up when he/she use that technique to defeat his/her opponent? the e.g of game like Disgaea, Final Fantasy, Suikoden, and another RPG, MMORPG game How the coding is to combine the sprite with his/her different style of technique, and what should I do? Please your guide, thank's a lot... ^_^

  • How to detect and collide two elastic line segments?

    - by Tautrimas
There are 4 moving physical nodes in 3D space. They are paired with two elastic line segments / strings (1 <- 2; 3 <- 4). Part I: How to detect the collision of two segments? Part II: On the moment of collision, fifth node is created at the intersection point and here you have the force-based graph. 5-th node (bend point) can slide among the strings as in a real world. Given the new coordinates of 4 nodes, how to calculate the position of the 5-th node on the next frame? I assume string force on the nodes to be F = -k * x where x is the string length. All I came up to is that the force between 5 and 1 equals 5 and 2 (the same with 3 and 4). What are the other properties?.

  • Split Texture2D Across Line

    - by Simie
Background I'm using a texture as a damage map represented by an array of floats for displaying damage effects on a space ship in a process. An upside of this is being able to 'slice' ships in half, using an input damage map with a line down the middle, as shown in the diagram below. Question However, I'm encountering problems separating this split ship into two different entities. I would like to be able to split the image down the 'damage line', in a process similar to this: I don't have much idea where to start detecting the red line above. Any advice would be welcome.

  • How can I efficiently create/store/implement animations as I add to my game?

    - by nickbadal
My game's characters are made up of different parts (head/body/legs/etc), and whatever items they have equipped. As I'm creating the animation system for my game, I want to try to anticipate a large number of combinations for different pieces for each character. Originally, I had planned on having a frame-by frame animation for each piece for each animation, and then layer them to combine them into a character, but this seems like it would be a lot of work for my artist, and that the memory/disk size would start to add up as well since we would need a sprite for every frame, of every customization of every piece, in every animation, for every character. What efficient ways are there to create/implement these animations as we add more and more configurations to our game?

  • Multithreaded game fails on SwapBuffers in render thread at exit

    - by user782220
The render loop and windows message loop run on separate threads. The way the program exits is that after PostQuitMessage is called in WM_DESTROY the message loop thread signals the render loop thread to exit. As far as I can tell before the render loop thread can even process the signal it tries SwapBuffers and that fails. My question, is there something about how Windows processes WM_DESTROY and WM_QUIT, in maybe DefWindowProc that causes various objects associated with rendering to go away even though I haven't explicitly deleted anything? And that would explain why the rendering thread is making bad calls at exit?

  • Create Math Game with PHP, Ajax, Jquery

    - by Sambucasun
I am developing a website where user can create their own game which can be joined by other users as well. It's a simple maths game which will shoot equations based on time or count specified. I want that moment user create a game, it will be listed in "current Games" section. Other users can check out the list and select the game to join. After game is created, creater should have a screen which should be having his name with display pic. Now gradually as others start joining the game, list should updated automatically. Once enough users are there i will start the game. The same list should be displayed to other users who join the game. Once game is over all will be displayed a summary list. I have gone through couple of threads but could not get clear idea. Do I need to use comet or other technology to create such game or simple PHP, Ajax or Jquery will suffice ? Also I want my website should be mobile compatible so i am designing it in html5. If i create this game using just Ajax then will there be any performance issue while playing through mobile. I am not much experienced so just need guidance for what should be appropriate or use for my requirement.

  • Really weird GL Behaviour, uniform not "hitting" proper mesh? LibGdx

    - by HaMMeReD
    Ok, I got some code, and you select blocks on a grid. The selection works. I can modify the blocks to be raised when selected and the correct one shows. I set a color which I use in the shader. However, I am trying to change the color before rendering the geometry, and the last rendered geometry (in the sequence) is rendered light. However, to debug logic I decided to move the block up and make it white, in which case one block moves up and another block becomes white. I checked all my logic and it knows the correct one is selected and it is showing in, in the correct place and rendering it correctly. When there is only 1 it works properly. Video Of the bug in action, note how the highlighted and elevated blocks are not the same block, however the code for color and My Renderer is here (For the items being drawn) public void render(Renderer renderer) { mGrid.render(renderer, mGameState); for (Entity e:mGameEntities) { UnitTypes ut = UnitTypes.valueOf((String)e.getObject(D.UNIT_TYPE.ordinal())); if (ut == UnitTypes.Soldier) { renderer.testShader.begin(); renderer.testShader.setUniformMatrix("u_mvpMatrix",mEntityMatrix); renderer.texture_soldier.bind(0); Vector2 pos = (Vector2) e.getObject(D.COORDS.ordinal()); mEntityMatrix.set(renderer.mCamera.combined); if (mSelectedEntities.contains(e)) { mEntityMatrix.translate(pos.x, 1f, pos.y); renderer.testShader.setUniformf("v_color", 0.5f,0.5f,0.5f,1f); } else { mEntityMatrix.translate(pos.x, 0f, pos.y); renderer.testShader.setUniformf("v_color", 1f,1f,1f,1f); } mEntityMatrix.scale(0.2f, 0.2f, 0.2f); renderer.model_soldier.render(renderer.testShader,GL20.GL_TRIANGLES); renderer.testShader.end(); } else if (ut == UnitTypes.Enemy_Infiltrator) { renderer.testShader.begin(); renderer.testShader.setUniformMatrix("u_mvpMatrix",mEntityMatrix); renderer.testShader.setUniformf("v_color", 1.0f,1,1,1.0f); renderer.texture_enemy_infiltrator.bind(0); Vector2 pos = (Vector2) e.getObject(D.COORDS.ordinal()); mEntityMatrix.set(renderer.mCamera.combined); mEntityMatrix.translate(pos.x, 0f, pos.y); mEntityMatrix.scale(0.2f, 0.2f, 0.2f); renderer.model_enemy_infiltrator.render(renderer.testShader,GL20.GL_TRIANGLES); renderer.testShader.end(); } } }

  • How to draw a texture to a MS Terrain object - Farseer

    - by Brad
I'm using Farseer to make a game in XNA and I can't seem to figure this out. I've decided to use MSTerrain for making my game's terrain because I wanted destructible terrain and MSTerrain seemed like the best bet. Unfortunately, I'm stumped on how to actually show the terrain. When I generate the terrain it's visible in debug view, but MSTerrain does not have a Draw method, so I'm wondering how it is supposed to be drawn to the screen? Is it worth pursuing? I'm starting to think that MSTerrain is more trouble than it's worth, is there another better way to do this with bodies? I appreciate any help you can give. Thanks.

  • Existent js libs for tileset / map loading and rendering?

    - by ylluminate
I'm building an rts style overhead tileset game with JavaScript (particularly using Ember.js framework as a base). The map is so large that I'd very much like to be able to load and render the board and layered items in a Google Maps'esque. I'm curious as to whether there are existing libs that would be helpful and already well thought out in these regards vs trying to reinvent the wheel. Are there any such libraries or code examples that would be useful in this area of board / map management?

  • Rendering projectiles with DirectX and C++

    - by Chris
I'm working on a simple game that has the user control a space ship that shoots small circular projectiles. However, I'm not sure how to render these. Right now I know how to make a LPDIREC3DSURFACE for a sprite and render it onto a LPDIRECT3DDEVICE9, but that's only for a single sprite. I assume I don't need to constantly create new surfaces and devices. How should projectile generation/rendering be handled? Thanks in advance.

  • SDL: How would I add tile layers with my area class as a singleton?

    - by Tony
I´m trying to wrap my head around how to get this done, if at all possible. So basically I have a Area class, Map class and Tile class. My Area class is a singleton, and this is causing some confusion. I´m trying to draw like this: Background / Tiles / Entities / Overlay Tiles / UI. void C_Application::OnRender() { // Fill the screen black SDL_FillRect( Surf_Screen, &Surf_Screen->clip_rect, SDL_MapRGB( Surf_Screen->format, 0x00, 0x00, 0x00 ) ); // Draw background // Draw tiles C_Area::AreaControl.OnRender(Surf_Screen, -C_Camera::CameraControl.GetX(), -C_Camera::CameraControl.GetY()); // Draw entities for(unsigned int i = 0;i < C_Entity::EntityList.size();i++) { if( !C_Entity::EntityList[i] ) { continue; } C_Entity::EntityList[i]->OnRender( Surf_Screen ); } // Draw overlay tiles // Draw UI // Update the Surf_Screen surface SDL_Flip( Surf_Screen); } Would be nice if someone could give a little input. Thanks.

  • How can I keep straight alpha during rendering particles?

    - by April
Rencently,I was trying to save textures of 3D particles so that I can reuse the in 2D rendering. Now I had some problem with alpha channel. Some artist told me I that my textures should have unpremultiplied alpha channel. When I try to get the rgb value back,I got strange result. Some area went lighter and even totally white.I mainly focus on additive and blend mode, that is: ADDITIVE: srcAlpha VS 1 BLEND: srcAlpha VS 1-srcAlpha I tried a technique called premultiplied alpha. This technique just got you the right rgb value, its all you need on screen. As for alpha value,it worked well with BLEND mode, but not ADDITIVE mode.As you can see in parameters,BLEND mode always controlled its value within 1.While ADDITIVE mode cannot guarantee. I want proper alpha, but it just got too big or too small consider to rgb.Now what can I do?Any help will be great thankful. PS:If you don't understand what I am trying to do,there is a commercial software called "Particle Illusion".You can create various particles and then save the scene to texture, where you can choose to remove background of particles. Now,I changed the title. For some software like maya or AE,what I want is called [straight alpha].

  • Browser game in JSP? [closed]

    - by Constant
I want to develop a browser-game (like ogame, travian) and I have some doubts in which technologies should I use. I was thinking in a server-side in JSP,Java and a client-side in HTML (or HTML5 if I learn to give it good use). Do you think my choices are right? I would like to make a board where many players could move simultaneously between tiles or squares. Do you think is possible in JSP or I should start with other language? Any suggestion aprecciated, and apologies for my english. Thank you! Regards!

  • How can I calculate the angle between two 2D vectors?

    - by Error 454
I am working on some movement AI where there are no obstacles and movement is restricted to the XY plane. I am calculating two vectors, v, the facing direction of ship 1, and w, the vector pointing from the position of ship 1 to ship 2. I am then calculating the angle between these two vectors using the formula arccos((v · w) / (|v| · |w|)) The problem I'm having is that arccos only returns values between 0° and 180°. This makes it impossible to determine whether I should turn left or right to face the other ship. Is there a better way to do this?

  • How to render a texture partly transparent?

    - by megamoustache
Good Morning StackOverflow, I'm having a bit of a problem right now as I can't seem to find a way to render part of a texture transparently with openGL. Here is my setting : I have a quad, representing a wall, covered with this texture (converted to PNG for uploading purposes). Obviously, I want the wall to be opaque, except for the panes of glass. There is another plane behind the wall which is supposed to show a landscape. I want to see the landscape from behind the window. Each texture is a TGA with alpha channel. The "landscape" is rendered first, then the wall. I thought it would be sufficient to achieve this effect but apparently it's not the case. The part of the window supposed to be transparent is black and the landscape only appears when I move past the wall. I tried to fiddle with GLBlendFunc() after having enabled it but it doesn't seem to do the trick. Am i forgetting an important step ? Thank you :)

  • How do I retain previously drawn graphics?

    - by Cromanium
    I've created a simple program that draws lines from a fixed point to a random point each frame. I wanted to keep each line on the screen. However, it always seems to be cleared each time it draws on the spriteBatch even without GraphicsDevice.Clear(color) being called. What seems to be the problem? protected override void Draw(GameTime gameTime) { spriteBatch.Begin(); DrawLine(spriteBatch); spriteBatch.End(); base.Draw(gameTime); } private void DrawLine(SpriteBatch spriteBatch) { Random r = new Random(); Vector2 a = new Vector2(50, 100); Vector2 b = new Vector2(r.Next(0, 640), r.Next(0,480)); Texture2D filler= new Texture2D(GraphicsDevice, 1, 1, false, SurfaceFormat.Color); filler.SetData(new[] { Color.Black }); float length = Vector2.Distance(a, b); float angle = (float)Math.Atan2(b.Y - a.Y, b.X - a.X); spriteBatch.Draw(filler, a, null, Color.Black, angle, Vector2.Zero, new Vector2(length,10.0f), SpriteEffects.None, 0f); } What am I doing wrong?

  • How can I make a character move forward in a certain direction?

    - by Shaun Wild
I have an entity class which is updated every game tick. Let's just assume said entity moves forward constantly. What i want to know is, how can i make it so that i can give an angle to a function and it will make my entity move in that direction. let's say for example moveForward(90); Would make my character move to the right, or for example declaring my rotation as a global Integer: moveForward(rotation); rotation++; Would make my entity move around in a small circle, I assume this includes some kind of vector math, which I haven't done any studying on so a brief explanation of that if it's necessary would be nice. I would appreciate a small code snippet and an explanation I can analyze, thanks in advanced :)

  • Where is a good place to learn how to develop games?

    - by pringlesinn
I'm brazilian and I want to learn how to develop a game in some college or something like that, but I don't know any place here to learn it. Here is not that good either to develop games, as we don't have many companies to do that. So, I was thinking about working in some place else, while I study it. What I really want to know is, a good place to learn, and a country that developers are well payed to be able to pay my course and still have money to do something else. I'm a Java programmer, still learning a lot, but I want to do it later. A few years from now.

  • Drawing Transparency in XNA 4.0

    - by dpaz
Using C# (VS2010) with XNA 4.0, I have a terrain layer (RenderTarget2D) in a 2D side-scroller. My visual system tracks updates to redraw individual tiles, but I am having trouble finding a way to clear out the rectangle where the tile will be drawn, which I must do because A) there may no longer be a tile or B) the tile may itself contain transparency. How can I draw a rectangle of transparency onto an existing RenderTarget2D? I essentially want to clear just that rectangular portion of it. My Google searches have not yielded anything relevant.

  • How do I build a matrix to translate one set of points to another?

    - by dotminic
I've got 3 points in space that define a triangle. I've also got a vertex buffer made up of three vertices, that also represent a triangle that I will refer to as a "model". How can I can I find the matrix M that will transform vertex in my buffer to those 3 points in space ? For example, let's say my three points A, B, C are at locations: A.x = 10, A.y = 16, A.z = 8 B.x = 12, B.y = 11, B.z = 1 C.x = 19, C.y = 12, C.z = 3 given these coordinates how can I build a matrix that will translate and rotate my model such that both triangles have the exact same world space ? That is, I want the first vertex in my triangle model to have the same coordinates as A, the second to have the same coordinates as B, and same goes for C. nb: I'm using instanced rendering so I can't just give each vertex the same position as my 3 points. I have a set of three points defining a triangle, and only three vertices in my vertex buffer.

  • Help with collision detection method [on hold]

    - by derek jones
I was wondering if any of you could spare me some time to go over some collision detection on my platform engine. i tried XNA a few years back but for reasons i wont go into online could not continue, my health is now at a state where i am ready to try again but due to my current circumstances (and age) schooling is out of the question so i turn to you guys for help. Whilst i can adapt the MS sample ok and have some great features, you will agree modifying code is not really learning. So i have spent the last couple of week going over my old MS code and lots of stuff online and decided on what i want and have ported most of it over to code that i understand 90% of. I have my player class that moves about, jumps with gravity, has animations and a bounding box that follows it around. I have my map & basic level class to load levels from text files. Its just how i handle the collisions that i am struggling with as i will want per pixel collision on some tiles(i have code for this in a pong game i made so that should be ok). I'm pretty clear in my mind on what i need to do its just putting it in code and in the right place, here's what i was thinking. I was going to do it all in layers, have a tile layer, a collision layer & an item layer this way i could make a nice map editor in Win Forms at some point. Anyway i need to read in the collision layer the assign each tile a rectangle and collision property, and this is where i get me. Would any of you be able to spare some time and go over this with me ? I will post some code later Regards Del

  • Determining whether two fast moving objects should be submitted for a collision check

    - by dreta
I have a basic 2D physics engine running. It's pretty much a particle engine, just uses basic shapes like AABBs and circles, so no rotation is possible. I have CCD implemented that can give accurate TOI for two fast moving objects and everything is working smoothly. My issue now is that i can't figure out how to determine whether two fast moving objects should even be checked against each other in the first place. I'm using a quad tree for spacial partitioning and for each fast moving object, i check it against objects in each cell that it passes. This works fine for determining collision with static geometry, but it means that any other fast moving object that could collide with it, but isn't in any of the cells that are checked, is never considered. The only solution to this i can think of is to either have the cells large enough and cross fingers that this is enough, or to implement some sort of a brute force algorithm. Is there a proper way of dealing with this, maybe somebody solved this issue in an efficient manner. Or maybe there's a better way of partitioning space that accounts for this?

  • What should be learned for someone starting in Android Games?

    - by user14544
I know this might be a little subjective. But I've read the other questions. A lot of answers kept on popping up like to use box2d, libgdx, andEngine, etc. So the real question is, what would be the best to start off with as a beginner. I have some experience with java code, just by reading about in the Oracle Docs. I've gone through Flash and Eclipse. When i mean gone through, i don't mean i have actually created my own game from Flash or Eclipse, but i just learn things here and there. Currently I'm reading Beginning Android for Beginners but I don't have the knowledge to implement my own Ideas into the game tutorials because of lack of experience. I'm looking for a way to learn how to program to create games for Android. While at the same time get experience from programming. I do not want to learn those drag and drop game making applications such as GameMaker.
