  • Designing the iPhone interface in a nib or in code?

    - by Jacob Relkin
    I've been pondering over this question for a long time already. On the one hand, Interface Builder offers a really easy way to design the interface and wire the elements up with objects in code. On the other hand, in larger projects, Interface Builder becomes a hassle to maintain. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Weird IF THAN not working with Requested data from URL text problem

    - by StealthRT
    Hey all, i am checking for an internet connection by checking for a file on my server. The file only has the word LIVE displayed on the page. No HTML or anything else is there, just the word LIVE. When i run this code, i do get the NSLog as saying "LIVE" but once i go to check it with the IF statement, it fails and i just do not know why??? NSString* myFile = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"http://www.xxx.com/iPodTouchPing.html"]; NSString* myFileURLString = [myFile stringByReplacingPercentEscapesUsingEncoding:NSASCIIStringEncoding]; NSData *myFileData = [[NSData alloc] initWithContentsOfURL:[NSURL URLWithString:myFileURLString]]; NSString *returnedMyFileContents=[[[NSString alloc] initWithData:myFileData encoding:NSASCIIStringEncoding] autorelease]; NSLog(@"%@", connected); if (connected == @"LIVE") { ... What am i doing wrong? I can not seem to find the reason?? David

  • Weirdest occurrence ever, UIButton @selector detecting right button, doing wrong 'else_if'?

    - by Scott
    So I dynamically create 3 UIButtons (for now), with this loop: NSMutableArray *sites = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; NSString *one = @"Constution Center"; NSString *two = @"Franklin Court"; NSString *three = @"Presidents House"; [sites addObject: one]; [one release]; [sites addObject: two]; [two release]; [sites addObject: three]; [three release]; NSString *element; int j = 0; for (element in sites) { UIButton *button = [UIButton buttonWithType:UIButtonTypeCustom]; //setframe (where on screen) //separation is 15px past the width (45-30) button.frame = CGRectMake(a, b + (j*45), c, d); [button setTitle:element forState:UIControlStateNormal]; button.backgroundColor = [SiteOneController myColor1]; [button addTarget:self action:@selector(showCCView:) forControlEvents:UIControlEventTouchUpInside]; [button setTag:j]; [self.view addSubview: button]; j++; } The @Selector method is here: - (void) showCCView:(id) sender { UIButton *button = (UIButton *)sender; int whichButton = button.tag; NSString* myNewString = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%d", whichButton]; self.view = [[UIView alloc] initWithFrame:[[UIScreen mainScreen] applicationFrame]]; self.view.backgroundColor = [UIColor whiteColor]; UINavigationBar *cc = [SiteOneController myNavBar1:@"Constitution Center Content"]; UINavigationBar *fc = [SiteOneController myNavBar1:@"Franklin Court Content"]; UINavigationBar *ph = [SiteOneController myNavBar1:@"Presidents House Content"]; if (whichButton = 0) { NSLog(myNewString); [self.view addSubview:cc]; } else if (whichButton = 1) { NSLog(myNewString); [self.view addSubview:fc]; } else if (whichButton = 2) { NSLog(myNewString); [self.view addSubview:ph]; } } Now, it is printing the correct button tag to NSLog, as shown in the method, however EVERY SINGLE BUTTON is displaying a navigation bar with "Franklin Court" as the title, EVERY SINGLE ONE, even though when I click button 0, it says "Button 0 clicked" in the console, but still performs the else if (whichButton = 1) code. Am I missing something here?

  • Get name given a phone number on the iPhone

    - by ganti
    I'm using a TextField where the user types a phone number. When the TextField changes, it should check if this number is already in the phonebook and display the name. So far, my only way is to parse all names and number in a Dict and read it from there. Is there a simpler, more efficient and sophisticated way to do that?

  • UITableViewCell checkmarks

    - by burki
    Hi! When you select a cell in the UITableView, the - (void)tableView:(UITableView *)table didSelectRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath is called. There some of the NSManagedObjects will be updated with the right values and the row will be deselected. Well, it works all right, but you can't see any selection of the tableviewcell. I found out that the access on core data causes the problem, that means, if i comment out the lines with the commands of updating the NSManagedObjects, it all works like I want, with a smooth selection and deselection. Can anybody help? Thanks. - (void)tableView:(UITableView *)table didSelectRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { //[table deselectRowAtIndexPath:indexPath animated:YES]; NSMutableSet *favoriteGroups = [NSMutableSet setWithSet:element.favoriteGroup]; NSMutableSet *elements = [NSMutableSet setWithSet:[(FavoriteGroup *)[fetchedResultsController objectAtIndexPath:indexPath] element]]; UITableViewCell *checkedCell = [table cellForRowAtIndexPath:indexPath]; if (checkedCell.accessoryType == UITableViewCellAccessoryCheckmark) { [elements removeObject:element]; [favoriteGroups removeObject:[fetchedResultsController objectAtIndexPath:indexPath]]; [[table cellForRowAtIndexPath:indexPath] setAccessoryType:UITableViewCellAccessoryNone]; } else { [elements addObject:element]; [favoriteGroups addObject:[fetchedResultsController objectAtIndexPath:indexPath]]; [[table cellForRowAtIndexPath:indexPath] setAccessoryType:UITableViewCellAccessoryCheckmark]; } element.favoriteGroup = favoriteGroups; FavoriteGroup *favoriteGroup = [self.fetchedResultsController objectAtIndexPath:indexPath]; favoriteGroup.element = elements; [self.tableView deselectRowAtIndexPath:indexPath animated:YES]; }

  • How to iterate JPA collections in Google App engine

    - by palto
    Hi I use Google App Engine with datanucleus and JPA. I'm having a real hard time grasping how I'm supposed to read stuff from data store and pass it to JSP. If I load a list of POJOs with entitymanager and pass it to JSP, it crashes to org.datanucleus.exceptions.NucleusUserException: Object Manager has been closed. I understand why this is happening. Obviously because I fetch the list, close the entity manager and pass it to JSP, at which point it will fail because the list is lazy. How do I make the list NOT lazy without resorting to hacks like calling size() or something like that? Here is what I'm trying to do: @Override protected void doGet(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse resp) throws ServletException, IOException { req.setAttribute("parties", getParties()); RequestDispatcher dispatcher = getServletContext().getRequestDispatcher("/WEB-INF/parties.jsp"); dispatcher.forward(req, resp); } private List<Party> getParties(){ EntityManager em = entityManagerProvider.get(); try{ Query query = em.createQuery("SELECT p FROM Party p"); return query.getResultList(); }finally{ em.close(); } }

  • iPhone: How do I override the back button in a Navigation Controller?

    - by Angelo Stracquatanio
    Hello, In my app I have a basic Navigation Controller. For all of my views, except one, the controller works as it should. However, for one view in particular, I would like the 'back' button to not go back to the previous view, but to go to one I set. In particular it is going to go back 2 views and skip over one. After doing some research I found that I can intercept the view when it disappears, so I tried to put in code to have it navigate to the page I would like: - (void)viewWillDisappear:(BOOL)animated { [super viewWillDisappear:animated]; //i set a flag to know that the back button was pressed if (viewPushed) { viewPushed = NO; } else { // Here, you know that back button was pressed mainMenu *mainViewController = [[mainMenu alloc] initWithNibName:@"mainMenu" bundle:nil]; [self.navigationController pushViewController:mainViewController animated:YES]; [mainViewController release]; } } That didn't work, so does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!!

  • Localization not working

    - by Krumelur
    I have an application that is supposed to be localized (two languages, english being the default). However, I seem to only get the English versions of all strings, regardless of what the system default language is. I am probably missing something trivial, but I've read several tutorials now without any solution. I added this line to main(), NSLog(@"Current locale is: %@", [[NSLocale currentLocale] localeIdentifier]); and the resulting printout is en_US, while the system was set to use the localized language. I checked the build output, and the app bundle contains the XX.lproj folders as I believe they should (and they are UTF-16, I confirmed this). What am I missing?

  • How to read an image from disk and block until its read?

    - by Shizam
    I'm loading 5 images from disk but I want the 1st image I read to show as soon as possible. Right now I do UIImage *img = [UIImage imageWithContentsOfFile:path]; in a for loop but since imageWithContentsOfFile:path isn't blocking all 5 images wind up getting read from disk before the first one will appear (because they're all using up I/O). I confirmed this by just load one and it appeared on screen faster than if I load all 5. I'd like to load the 1st image and block until its fully read and shown before loading the next 4 or load the 1st one and be notified when its done before loading the next 4 but I can't figure out a way to do it. None of the 'WithContentsOfFile' methods for data or image block and they don't notify or have delegate methods. Any suggestions? Thanks

  • How to learn about iPhone jailbroken programming?

    - by tomorini
    I'm interested in learning about what additional features and APIs an app has access to when an iPhone is jailbroken. Can someone provide me with some basic resources to learn about this? I would be most interested in: documentation on the private APIs filesystem layout app configuration, e.g. how did WinterBoard replace SpringBoard? Apps that replace the lockscreen? tools needed Suggestions appreciated.

  • Iphone: controlling text with delay problem with UIWebView

    - by James B.
    Hi, I've opted to use UIWebView so I can control the layout of text I've got contained in a local html document in my bundle. I want the text to display within a UIWebView I've got contained within my view. So the text isn't the whole view, just part of it. Everything runs fine, but when the web page loads I get a blank screen for a second before the text appears. This looks really bad. can anyone give me an example of how to stop this happening? I'm assuming I have to somehow hide the web view until it has fully loaded? Could someone one tell me how to do this? At the moment I'm calling my code through the viewDidLoad like this: [myUIWebView loadRequest: [NSURLRequest requestWithURL:[NSURL fileURLWithPath:[[NSBundle mainBundle]pathForResource:@"localwebpage" ofType:@"html"] isDirectory:NO]]]; Any help is much appreciated. I've read round a few forums and not seen a good answer to this question, and it seems like it recurs a lot as an issue for beginners like myself. Thanks for taking the time to read this post! UPDATED info Thanks for your response. The suggestions below solves the problem but creates a new one for me as now when my view loads it is totally hidden until I click on my toggle switch. to understand this it's maybe most helpful if I post all my code. Before this though let me explain the setup of my view. I've got a standard view within which I've also got two web views, one on top of the other. each web view contains different text with different styling. the user flicks between views using a toggle switch, which hides/reveals the web views. I'm using the web views because I want to control the style/layout of the text. Below is my full .m code, I can't figure out where it's going wrong. My web views are called oxford & harvard I'm sure its something to do with how/when I'm hiding/revealing views. I've played around with this but can't seem to get it right. Maybe my approach is wrong. A bit of advice ironing this out would be really appreciated: @implementation ReferenceViewController @synthesize oxford; @synthesize harvard; // Implement viewDidLoad to do additional setup after loading the view, typically from a nib. - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; [oxford loadRequest: [NSURLRequest requestWithURL:[NSURL fileURLWithPath:[[NSBundle mainBundle]pathForResource:@"Oxford" ofType:@"html"] isDirectory:NO]]]; [harvard loadRequest: [NSURLRequest requestWithURL:[NSURL fileURLWithPath:[[NSBundle mainBundle]pathForResource:@"Harvard" ofType:@"html"] isDirectory:NO]]]; [oxford setHidden:YES]; [harvard setHidden:YES]; } - (void)webViewDidFinishLoad:(UIWebView *)webView { if([webView hidden]) { [oxford setHidden:NO]; [harvard setHidden:NO]; } } //Toggle controls for toggle switch in UIView to swap between webviews - (IBAction)toggleControls:(id)sender { if ([sender selectedSegmentIndex] == kSwitchesSegmentIndex) { oxford.hidden = NO; harvard.hidden = YES; } else { oxford.hidden = YES; harvard.hidden = NO; } } - (void)didReceiveMemoryWarning { // Releases the view if it doesn't have a superview. [super didReceiveMemoryWarning]; // Release any cached data, images, etc that aren't in use. } - (void)viewDidUnload { [super viewDidUnload]; // Release any retained subviews of the main view. // e.g. self.myOutlet = nil; } - (void)dealloc { [super dealloc]; [oxford release]; [harvard release]; } @end

  • UIAlertView Will not show

    - by John
    I have a program that is requesting a JSON string. I have created a class that contains the connect method below. When the root view is coming up, it does a request to this class and method to load up some data for the root view. When I test the error code (by changing the URL host to 127.0.0.1), I expect the Alert to show. Behavior is that the root view just goes black, and the app aborts with no alert. No errors in debug mode on the console, either. Any thoughts as to this behavior? I've been looking around for hints to this for hours to no avail. Thanks in advance for your help. Note: the conditional for (error) is called, as well as the UIAlertView code. - (NSString *)connect:(NSString *)urlString { NSString *jsonString; UIApplication *app = [UIApplication sharedApplication]; app.networkActivityIndicatorVisible = YES; NSError *error = nil; NSURLResponse *response = nil; NSURL *url = [[NSURL alloc] initWithString:urlString]; NSURLRequest *req = [NSURLRequest requestWithURL:url cachePolicy:NSURLRequestReloadIgnoringCacheData timeoutInterval:10]; NSData *_response = [NSURLConnection sendSynchronousRequest: req returningResponse: &response error: &error]; if (error) { /* inform the user that the connection failed */ //AlertWithMessage(@"Connection Failed!", message); UIAlertView *alert = [[UIAlertView alloc] initWithTitle:@"Oopsie!" message:@"Unable to connect! Try later, thanks." delegate:nil cancelButtonTitle:@"OK" otherButtonTitles: nil]; [alert show]; [alert release]; } else { jsonString = [[[NSString alloc] initWithData:_response encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding] autorelease]; } app.networkActivityIndicatorVisible = NO; [url release]; return jsonString; }
