  • iPhone real memory climbs when interacting with UI

    - by Scott Gress
I've been using the Activity Monitor to check the memory usage of my iPhone apps. I've noticed that the Real Memory climbs whenever I interact with the UI in any way, even if there's no code being called. For example, I can create a brand new View-Based application and run it, and as I click or drag in the empty window the Real Memory increases even though the app isn't responding in any way. I get that the view controller is doing some stuff in the background to interpret my interactions, but it seems like the memory should go back down after a second or so. Instead, it keeps going up and up and up as long as I keep clicking or dragging. I can wait forever and it never decreases. This is a little disturbing. Am I missing something?

  • jQuery .noconflict with prototype not working in (you guessed it) IE.

    - by Kyle Sevenoaks
On my new customer page, I have successfully implemented a jQuery show/hide toggle alongside a Prototype script using jQuery's .noconflict. (Thanks to all for answers!) But as the world of the net is, IE's not playing ball. {literal} <script src="http://code.jquery.com/jquery-latest.js" type="text/javascript"> </script> <script type="text/javascript"> var $j = jQuery.noConflict(); $j(function() { $j("#button1").click(function() { $j("#show-hide").toggle("slow"); }); });? </script> {/literal} As you all must know by now, I'm just newly coming to all this jQuery stuff, so I have no idea what could cause it. Thanks for any help.

  • do you need captcha validation in newsletter subscription?

    - by user354051
I am using a custom captcha php script along with news letter scripts to let users subscribe using an email id. The method of registration is based on jQuery.post command. My question is that am I really safe If I remove the captcha validation from my subscription script. The subscription is simple. For example mydomain/[email protected] The subscribe.php is called along with email as parameter using jQuery.post command. I am new to web programming stuff and don't have much idea about spammers in conjunction with above scenario. Any advise would greatly be appreciated. Thanks

  • Rails valiation among a three model relationship

    - by Andrew
I'm working on a three model relationship with one aspect that I'm not sure how to approach. Here's the basic relationship: class Taxonomy has_many :terms # attribute: `inclusive`, default => false end class Term belongs_to :taxonomy has_and_belongs_to_many :photos end class Photo has_and_belongs_to_many :terms end This is pretty straightforward stuff except for one thing: A Taxonomy can be either 'Inclusive' or 'Exclusive'. Exclusive means the terms are mutually exclusive, Inclusive means they're not. So, if a Taxonomy is exclusive ie. taxonomy.inclusive = false, then there can only be one term from that taxonomy attached to a given photo. Now, I can handle this on the client-side without a problem, but I am not quite sure how to set up a validation on Photos (or somewhere else) that says basically: "validate that no more than one term from an exclusive taxonomy is associated with this record." Any ideas on how to do that?

  • Language D compared to C++?

    - by Henrik
Anyone here with experience of the language D? I was just reading through its presentation at http://www.d-programming-language.org/ and at Wikipedia and it seems like a good (better) alternative to C++. With good/better I mean that it seem simpler yet it has all the good stuff within C/C++. But without some of the difficulties that make C++ more difficult to learn and use in a good and efficient way. So anyone with comments/experience with the language D? Performance?

  • Accessing local variable doesn't improve performance

    - by NicMagnier
The short version Why is this code: var index = (Math.floor(y / scale) * img.width + Math.floor(x / scale)) * 4; More performant than this one? var index = Math.floor(ref_index) * 4; The long version This week, the author of Impact js published an article about some rendering issue: http://www.phoboslab.org/log/2012/09/drawing-pixels-is-hard In the article there was the source of a function to scale an image by accessing pixels in the canvas. I wanted to suggest some traditional ways to optimize this kind of code so that the scaling would be shorter at loading time. But after testing it my result was most of the time worst that the original function. Guessing this was the JavaScript engine that was doing some smart optimization I tried to understand a bit more what was going on so I did a bunch of test. But my results are quite confusing and I would need some help to understand what's going on. I have a test page here: http://www.mx981.com/stuff/resize_bench/test.html jsPerf: http://jsperf.com/local-variable-due-to-the-scope-lookup To start the test, click the picture and the results will appear in the console. There are three different versions: The original code: for( var y = 0; y < heightScaled; y++ ) { for( var x = 0; x < widthScaled; x++ ) { var index = (Math.floor(y / scale) * img.width + Math.floor(x / scale)) * 4; var indexScaled = (y * widthScaled + x) * 4; scaledPixels.data[ indexScaled ] = origPixels.data[ index ]; scaledPixels.data[ indexScaled+1 ] = origPixels.data[ index+1 ]; scaledPixels.data[ indexScaled+2 ] = origPixels.data[ index+2 ]; scaledPixels.data[ indexScaled+3 ] = origPixels.data[ index+3 ]; } } jsPerf: http://jsperf.com/so-accessing-local-variable-doesn-t-improve-performance One of my attempt to optimize it: var ref_index = 0; var ref_indexScaled = 0 var ref_step = 1 / scale; for( var y = 0; y < heightScaled; y++ ) { for( var x = 0; x < widthScaled; x++ ) { var index = Math.floor(ref_index) * 4; scaledPixels.data[ ref_indexScaled++ ] = origPixels.data[ index ]; scaledPixels.data[ ref_indexScaled++ ] = origPixels.data[ index+1 ]; scaledPixels.data[ ref_indexScaled++ ] = origPixels.data[ index+2 ]; scaledPixels.data[ ref_indexScaled++ ] = origPixels.data[ index+3 ]; ref_index+= ref_step; } } jsPerf: http://jsperf.com/so-accessing-local-variable-doesn-t-improve-performance The same optimized code but with recalculating the index variable each time (Hybrid) var ref_index = 0; var ref_indexScaled = 0 var ref_step = 1 / scale; for( var y = 0; y < heightScaled; y++ ) { for( var x = 0; x < widthScaled; x++ ) { var index = (Math.floor(y / scale) * img.width + Math.floor(x / scale)) * 4; scaledPixels.data[ ref_indexScaled++ ] = origPixels.data[ index ]; scaledPixels.data[ ref_indexScaled++ ] = origPixels.data[ index+1 ]; scaledPixels.data[ ref_indexScaled++ ] = origPixels.data[ index+2 ]; scaledPixels.data[ ref_indexScaled++ ] = origPixels.data[ index+3 ]; ref_index+= ref_step; } } jsPerf: http://jsperf.com/so-accessing-local-variable-doesn-t-improve-performance The only difference in the two last one is the calculation of the 'index' variable. And to my surprise the optimized version is slower in most browsers (except opera). Results of personal testing (not the jsPerf tests): Opera Original: 8668ms Optimized: 932ms Hybrid: 8696ms Chrome Original: 139ms Optimized: 145ms Hybrid: 136ms Safari Original: 433ms Optimized: 853ms Hybrid: 451ms Firefox Original: 343ms Optimized: 422ms Hybrid: 350ms After digging around, it seems an usual good practice is to access mainly local variable due to the scope lookup. Because The optimized version only call one local variable it should be faster that the Hybrid code which call multiple variable and object in addition to the various operation involved. So why the "optimized" version is slower? I thought that it might be because some JavaScript engine don't optimize the Optimized version because it is not hot enough but after using --trace-opt in chrome, it seems all version are properly compiled by V8. At this point I am a bit clueless and wonder if somebody would know what is going on? I did also some more test cases in this page: http://www.mx981.com/stuff/resize_bench/index.html

  • Why can't I view a directory in Linux?

    - by Thread7
I am setting up a Linux web server running apache. I uploaded and untared my web sites files. The files in the main directory are all visible when I am SSH'd into the system. However, I am blocked from all subdirectories. If I write: # cd images Then I get the error: -bash: cd: images: Permission denied I am signed in as ec2-user. I untarred the stuff as ec2-user and I doubt there was any permissions in the tar file since I created the archive on a Windows system. The weird thing is that I am the owner of this directory. Here is a snippet of the command: ls -l drw-rw-r-- 19 ec2-user ec2-user 4096 May 4 04:09 images When I do "sudo su" and then type the command cd images everything is fine. Why do I get "Permission denied" as ec2-user if I am the owner and have rw permission?

  • App shuts down when pushing UIbutton!

    - by maralbjo
For reasons unknown my app shuts down upon pressing a UIButton in the simulator. I have dynamically added my UIView, if that is of relevance. No tracelog or debug information just a rush exit... This is the simple code (.m-file): - (IBAction) testButtonPressed: (id) sender{ NSLog (@"Testbutton pressed."); } From the header file: - (IBAction) testButtonPressed: (id) sender; Pretty basic stuff, but for some reason the app terminates. Help!

  • C# Deserializing to a dictionary<string, Object>

    - by lovecraft
I'm writing a C#/VB application to connect to a database and do stuff with the data. I was given this code to take a serialized byte array and deserialized it, which is then written to a Dictionary The line of code is: Dictionary<string, Object> DictionaryEmployee = (Dictionary<string, Object> Deserializer(byteArrayEmp)); The errors I'm getting are exceedingly unhelpful. "Only assignment, call, increment, decrement, await, and new object expressions can be used as a statement" if I mouse over Object and "Using the generic type 'System.Collections.Generic.Dictionary' requires 2 type arguments if I mouse over Dictionary.

  • jQuery plugin to style objects

    - by Alex
Hi. I've been looking at the various JavaScript UI libraries and am wondering if there's one that can add some styling to page elements. I'm currently adding rounded corners, shadows, borders, and gradients via my own CSS + hacks to get it working on IE. I'm using jQuery for a number of tasks and wondered if there's a plugin that can add these design flairs more easily to DIVs. Not that you want to go overboard with this stuff, but when you need to use it, you'd like to depend on cross-browser and tried-and-tested solutions. Thanks.

  • Subtle C++ mistake, can you spot it?

    - by aaa
I ran into a subtle C++ gotcha, took me while to resolve it. Can you spot it? class synchronized_container { boost::mutex mutex_; std::vector <T> container_; void push_back(const T &value) { boost::scoped_lock(mutex_); // raii mutex lock container_.push_back(value); } ... }; scoped lock is a raii mutex lock, obtains lock on constructor, release lock in destructor. The program will work as expected in serial, but will may occasionally produce weird stuff with more than one thread.

  • JQuery mobile handling links (return false)

    - by shinax
I'm planning on using JQM to make a simple mobile web app, and I'm having problems getting this simple functionality to work: when I click on some links (not all of them), I want to be able to first process some data, and then depending on that outcome, sometimes continue the link action (I like the whole transitions and ajax things), and sometimes don't. The important part is that I want to preserve the normal JQMobile transitions and stuff for the links, just sometimes prevent them (for example for validation and things like that). I've tried with: return false, preventDefault (and in combination with stopPropagation), and data-ajax="false", and none hav worked, they all redirect. Could somebody tell me the correct way to to this in JQMobile? Just in case it's important: I'm using anchor links, using this to test. Thank you in advance, Jennifer.

  • Cocoa (Touch) for Swing Developers #1: Where Are the Layouts?

    - by yar
My iPhone SDK and Objective-C learning is moving ahead quickly, thanks to several great books and online help (including this one). But I do have some basic questions due to what I already know that will be answered eventually, but I'd rather get a heads-up now if possible :) Are there equivalents for LayoutManagers in Cocoa Touch? Are they used, or is absolute positioning used instead? I have seen some of the layout stuff in IB, but I'm not sure what to look at in code. Aside from using the IB, are UIControls added directly to UIView instances using the addSubview (like add in Swing)? These are just two concrete questions that I've thought of just now, but I would love to see any translation of Swing concepts to Cocoa Touch.

  • Select value from database and store into a temporary variable

    - by user1616230
I want to select a stored value from database and then put it into a temporary variable. For example, I have a column called category, one value under it is m, so I want to select this m value from the database, let's say from a table of a database called user_info. Then I want to put it into a variable, let's name it $res. After that, I want to do some condition stuff, such as if $res=="m", Can anyone help me write a simple structure here? Here is the code: <?php $sql = "Select category FROM user_info WHERE user_name = '" .$_SESSION['username']."' and password = '".$_SESSION['password']."'"; $res = mysql_query($sql); if($res == "a"){ include('MPIncomeStrategy.php'); } if($res == "b"){ include('MPIncomeStrategy.php'); } But it seems that the code is not able to detect $res =="category value in database". Did I just use the wrong way to store the category value?

  • Hide div when clicking outside

    - by scferg
I've searched and search not only google but also here and still have to find a solution that will work. I have a div that is hidden by default, then toggled by clicking on a link. I also want it to hide when you click outside of the div. Simple, I thought, but nothing I've tried had worked yet. This is the jquery: <script type="text/javascript"> function toggleDiv(divID) { $("#"+divID).fadeToggle(200); } </script> And the link that toggles it: <a onclick="toggleDiv('myDiv');">Link</a> And then the div: <div id="myDiv"> stuff </div> If anyone has any advice, I would really appreciate it.

  • Use of .apply() with 'new' operator. Is this possible?

    - by Premasagar
    In JavaScript, I want to create an object instance (via the new operator), but pass an arbitrary number of arguments to the constructor. Is this possible? What I want to do is something like this (but the code below does not work): function Something(){ // init stuff } function createSomething(){ return new Something.apply(null, arguments); } var s = createSomething(a,b,c); // 's' is an instance of Something The Answer From the responses here, it became clear that there's no in-built way to call .apply() with the new operator. However, people suggested a number of really interesting solutions to the problem. My preferred solution was this one from Matthew Crumley (I've modified it to pass the arguments property): var createSomething = (function() { function F(args) { return Something.apply(this, args); } F.prototype = Something.prototype; return function() { return new F(arguments); } })();

  • IE 8 and jquery problem

  • Deleting the first occurrence of a target in aList [closed]

    - by Bandz Jooz

  • Extra line breaks inserted in MrEd text%

    - by Jesse Millikan
In a DrScheme project, I'm using a MrEd editor-canvas% with text% and inserting a string from a literal in a Scheme file. • Is it practical to build a web site using strict XHTML and relying on CSS 100% for visual style?

    - by Micah
I tend to take the academic approach all too often and adhere to strict principles in my development when the reality is that I could have finished the project sooner had I been a little less cautious. I'm looking to find the right amount of practicality. I want to take the "Zen" approach to designing a site which (in my words) says "Use HTML strictly for content structure, and let the CSS magic do the rest". How practical is this in reality? One of the issues I run into is that I want to develop (make functional) the site first, then come back in and design it later. I know structure-wise how I want the site to flow, but I haven't even begun playing with the CSS layout, graphics, or any of the other designy stuff. What is the right approach here?

  • Apache RewriteRule and slashes (%2F)

I have the following RewriteRule: RewriteRule ^like/(.+)$ ask.php/$1 Which works just fine for requests like: /like/someting+here/something+else But for requests where one of the path parts contains an escaped slash (%2F), the server spits out a 404 Not Found error: /like/one%2Ftwo+things/ Is there any way to fix this? I tried both [B] and [NE] flags (separate and together) but nothing worked.
