  • Looking for an application to record audio and video on a linux "embedded" device

    - by Luke404
I am working with a linux x86 device with limited CPU resources (as a prototype we just use a pentium-m netbook). We'd like to record video from one V4L2 device (we'll probably end up using just USB Video Class devices like all modern webcams) and one audio stream from an ALSA source. The thing will not have screen and keyboard, and obviously no X11 environment. Goals are: do as little work as possible to cope with little cpu resources - for example I'd like to record video in the native MJPEG I get out of the UVC devices encoding audio to MPEG3 Layer-2 (aka mp2) is ok since it let us save a lot of space (compared to raw pcm samples) and does use little cpu power I don't mind loosing some video frames here and there (UVC devices do that) as long as I can get audio and video streams syncronized not require user input to start the thing (a python script takes care of initialization, startup, shutdown, etc...) be able to open the resulting files for postprocessing without too much effort (ie, if mplayer or vlc can play it, it's fine) So far the only app I found that could be started from command line and record V4L2 video + ALSA audio is mencoder but I'm having some difficulties with it. It should be able to do that but I cannot record audio and video together - just one of the two. And if I use two different processes to record to two different files I have no means to get them in sync (audio is more or less always correct, but video framerate will vary over time and it seems to lack timestamps to correctly play it back to the correct time). Long story short, how do you record an unconverted MJPEG stream (from an UVC device) and an audio stream (from an ALSA device, possibly encoding to any standard format) using a command line tool, to a single file (MPEG or any other container), keeping audio and video in sync?

  • Automatic resize two windows to fit desktop

    - by karstenkousgaard
Hi I have a single monitor, but with a wide resolution. Some times it would be helpful to have two applications running next to each other. Is there a tool to quickly tell windows to resize the two applications to fit the desktop? Perhaps even with an option to make the one application use 75% and the other 25% I know the Windows 7 Alt+left/right arrow feature, which is nice, but still needs too many clicks.

  • How do I access a git repository on a samba share?

    - by Jason Baker
I have a Samba share set up that I'd like to put a git repository on. I've tried searching google for the best way to use git on a Samba share, but it seems difficult to find anything on doing this as Samba uses git for development. What is the best way to do this? Right now, I'm just working with Linux, but it would be nice to know how to do this in a cross-platform manner as well.

  • how to switch to another window when Ctrl + B not works for tmux?

    - by hugemeow
as we all know tmux is quite nice tool, but there is some scenerios that Ctrl + B cannot be used for example: i sshd to server A, and now i connect to A's tmux pty, so Ctrl + B is captured by server A. then i ssh to server B from server A, and there is also tmux running on Server B, this time, Ctrl + B only works for server A, and cannot be used by server B, so if i want to switch windows for server B, what should i do then?

  • SSH Tunneling From Mac to Windows Server 2008

    - by 5arx
I've been using Bitvise Tunnelier for a good few years to get secure access to my home server. This week I've switched to OS X and can't seem to find a nice GUI-based app to allow me to connect SSH/SFTP/Remote Desktop thru an SSH tunnel. Can anyone please advise? I'm not overly keen on the command line... Thanks for reading :-D

  • Looking for real time collaborative diagram drawing tool

    - by taotree
I have seen a number of diagram software packages but most don't support real time collaboration. Google docs Drawing does the real-time collaboration, but is severely limited on features--focused on drawing rather than diagrams. I want something that supports connectors and such. Mind maps would be also be nice but would be a secondary requirement.

  • Can you zip a file from command prompt?

    - by Aaron Bush
I have a batch file that outputs a text file. I thought it would be nice if I could zip it up too. This will be used in an uncontrolled environment so I can't make assumptions about the presence of 3rd party software products such as 7-Zip etc. This needs to use Window's now-built-in capability to zip files.

  • What software do you use to detect an internect connection drop?

    - by Darryl Hein
I'm looking for a piece of software to detect drops in my internet connection and log those drops. OS doesn't really matter since I have pretty much everything running here, although something on OSX would be nice. I also don't really care how it determines that connection has been dropped, but I think that there must be something better than a ping or at least a combination of a ping and something else.

  • How do I ensure a process is running, even if it kills itself? (it needs to be restarted then)

    - by le_me
I'm using linux. I want a process (an irc bot) to run every time I start the computer. But I've got a problem: The network is bad and it disconnects often, so I need to manually restart the bot a few times a day. How do I automate that? Additional information: The bot creates a pid file, called bot.pid The bot reconnects itself, but only a few times. The network is too bad, so the bot kills itself sometimes because it gets no response. What I do currently (aka my approach ;) ) I have a cron job executing startbot.rb every 5 minutes. (The script itself is in the same directory as the bot) The script: #!/usr/bin/ruby require 'fileutils' if File.exists?(File.expand_path('tmp/bot.pid')) @pid = File.read(File.expand_path('tmp/bot.pid')).chomp!.to_i begin raise "ouch" if Process.kill(0, @pid) != 1 rescue puts "Removing abandoned pid file" FileUtils.rm(File.expand_path('tmp/bot.pid')) puts "Starting the bot!" Kernel.exec(File.expand_path('./bot.rb')) else puts "Bot up and running!" end else puts "Starting the bot!" Kernel.exec(File.expand_path('./bot.rb')) end What this does: It checks if the pid file exists, if that's true it checks if kill -s 0 BOT_PID == 1 (if the bot's running) and starts the bot if one of the two checks fail/are not true. My approach seems to be quite dirty so how do I do it better?

  • Bypassing SQUID on freebsd with PF

    - by epema
I have PF+SQUID31 on FREEBSD-9.0, and I want to have some hosts(aka goodguys) to bypass the proxy, so that torrents are not logged. Also, I am not sure about transparent. It means that I dont have to configure proxy settings on the client side right? I have tried doing a redirect no rdr on $int_if inet proto {tcp, udp} from 192.168.1.233/32 to any However, no luck :( Here is a quick look of my conf files: SQUID /usr/local/etc/squid/squid.conf http_port 192.168.1.1:8080 transparent RC /etc/rc.conf: gateway_enable="YES" pf_enable="YES" pf_rules="/usr/local/etc/pf.conf" pflog_enable="YES" squid_enable="YES" I have squid31 installed from ports with SQUID_PF "Enable transparent proxying with PF" on PF /usr/loca/etc/pf.conf: int_if="re0" ext_if="bge0" localnet="{ 192.168.1.0/24 }" table <goodguys> const { "192.168.1.219", "192.168.1.233" } set block-policy drop set skip on lo0 scrub in all fragment reassemble scrub out all random-id max-mss 1440 block in on $ext_if pass out on $ext_if keep state block in on $int_if pass in on $int_if inet proto tcp from $int_if:network to $int_if port 8080 keep state pass in on $int_if inet proto udp from $int_if:network to $int_if port 21 keep state pass in on $int_if inet proto udp from $int_if:network to $int_if port 22 keep state pass in on $int_if inet proto udp from $int_if:network to $int_if port 53 keep state pass in on $int_if inet proto tcp from $int_if:network to any port { smtp, pop3 } keep state pass in on $int_if inet proto icmp from $int_if:network to $int_if keep state pass out on $int_if keep state What lines should I add in conf files? I am assuming that the problem is on the firewall(pf).

  • Nagios simple dashboard

    - by Thomas
I am looking for a dead simple dashboard for Nagios so our IT team can view the status of our services. In an old version of what's up gold, it was a nice dashboard with different rectangular shape being red, yellow or green depending on the status of the service and could be display easily on a screen. Is there some copycat dashboard for nagios ? any better recommendation ? I want something you can see from your desk 15meters away: red or green, no need for details.

  • Software to draw IT-infrastructure

    - by ICTdesk.net
Hi everybody, I have to design and present the ICT-infrastructure for a startup. Does anybody know a good piece of software for making a good looking layout of the ICT-infrastructure? Until now I have been doing this by hand, but this time I need to present it in a very nice way. What do you use? I prefer software that will run on Ubuntu Linux, but Windows is also fine. Thanks... Marcel

  • How do I list commands shadowed by other commands in PATH?

    - by sds
How do I list all the commands in my path which are shadowed by other commands? E.g., if I have /bin/foo, /bin/bar, /usr/local/bar and /usr/bin/foo, I want to see something like foo in /bin shadows /usr/bin bar in /bin shadows /usr/local/bin I guess I can throw together something based on ls and comm, but I would much prefer something out of the box, especially bash-based (it would also be nice if aliases and functions were searched too, but that is not too important).
