  • A leader election algorithm for an oriented hypercube

    - by mick
I'm stuck with some problem where I have to design a leader election algorithm for an oriented hypercube. This should be done by using a tournament with a number of rounds equal to the dimension D of the hypercube. In each stage d, with 1 <= d < D two candidate leaders of neighbouring d-dimensional hypercubes should compete to become the single candidate leader of the (d+1)-dimensional hypercube that is the union of their respective hypercubes.

  • Alternative of JPA

    - by Peter
I want to use JPA for my persistence layer of my Java Desktop Application but I have the similar problem as describe at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2562746/jpa-entity-design-problem/2563009#2563009 I didn't find a solution to the above kind of problem that's why I want to go with any other alternative of JPA. It would be better if I get the solution of the above problem.

  • What would cause my Silverlight .xap to quadruple in size suddenly?

    - by Edward Tanguay
I've been working on a Silverlight application. I just noticed that the .xap file is now four times as big as it was, what could have caused that? Here's some other info: there seems to now be many more language settings in the bin/Release directory I checked "Reduce size of .xap" in under Properties/Silverlight but that just brought it down from 1300 to 1200. I reference the System.Windows.Controls.Toolkit dll but I was doing that even when it was 325K Screenshot of build directories before and after:

  • Lightweight PHP5 based template class/system

    - by Wizzard
Hi there. Looking at using a template system for a new project, it's only a small site and don't want to use the overhead and 'complexity' of smarty. I don't really like template systems that force you to make use of another language just to make it easier for designers (apparently). Something like this http://www.namepros.com/code/517342-php5-template-class.html is what Im looking at but something which is a bit more robust and proven.

  • Is Ruby on Rails slow with medium traffic?

    - by IHawk
Hello ! I made some searches on Google, and I read some posts, articles and benchmarks about Ruby on Rails being slow and I am planning to build one website that will have a good amount of users inserting data and there will be some applications to process this data (maybe in Ruby, you can help me choosing the language). What is the real performance of Ruby on Rails with large traffic ? Thank you !

  • Good practices for a robust FTP script

    - by dutch
What are the things a script should do to ensure that files have been FTPed correctly? Following are the things I have in mind: 1) use high level scripting language like python or perl instead of shell script for a more comprehensive functionality and error handling 2) check that the file exists at the destination after FTP 3) check destination file size. This is a little bit difficult because file size will change if the source and destination are running different OS. Any tips on how to go about this?

  • Change text of UIAlertView when recording a video with UIImagePickerController and reaching the videoMaximumDuration

    - by aimak
I'd want to know how to change to text of the UIAlertView appearing when I record a video with a UIImagePickerController and I reach the videoMaximumDuration. If it is not possible to change the text of that UIAlertView, is it at least possible to display it in another language ? Edit : the default text is "The maximum length for this video has been reached" with title "Video Recording Stopped". Thank you, aimak

  • why does vb not support multiple inheritance?

    - by isolatedIterator
I've seen some discussion on why c# does not implement multiple inheritance but very little as to why it isn't supported in vb. I understand that both c# and vb are compiled down to intermediary language and so they both need to share similar restrictions. The lack of multiple inheritance in VB seems to have been given as one reason for the lack of the feature in dot net. Does anyone know why VB doesn't support multiple inheritance? I'm hoping for a bit of history lesson and discussion on why this was never considered for VB.

  • Can immutable be a memory hog?

    - by ciscoheat
Let's say we have a memory-intensive class like an Image, with chainable methods like Resize() and ConvertTo(). If this class is immutable, won't it take a huge amount of memory when I start doing things like i.Resize(500, 800).Rotate(90).ConvertTo(Gif), compared to a mutable one which modifies itself? How to handle a situation like this in a functional language?

    - by Ami
I work a lot with Wordpress and I'm trying to customize some of my themes, all of which are written in PHP. I've been trying to learn this language for a little while, but I'm not an experienced coder (My knowledge only includes HTML with some CSS). Can you recommend a guide/book/tutorial/etc that would work for a beginner?

Error in paste("testing.visit", i, "\n", sep = "") <- subset(testing, : target of assignment expands to non-language object Thank you, Brandon

  • Is there a way to avoid debugger?

    - by Gabriel Šcerbák
I don't like debugging in a debugger, because I think it is often below the abstraction layer of the programming language and it is often not reproducible. I favor usign unit tests when possible and I think they are a good way, but it is not always that easy to implement them. Do you know about any other alternative approaches to avoid the use of debugger?
