I am sure my Windows Server 2008 box is constantly under attack both at the network level and web application level.
QUestion is How do i detect these attacks? is there any light-weight software available? which can monitor the server?
Note I am running this on a VPS so the monitor program will have to run on the same server.
I have a laptop running Windows XP that does not connect to the Internet and I would like to use a USB GPS receiver as a time source to set the clock. Generally, the laptop will not have access to the open sky so getting a strong, multi-satellite connection is not likely.
Ideally, I would like to be able to have the program detect the GPS receiver and set the clock without intervention from the user.
Is what I'm seeking even feasible?
Is there a way of configuring a nagios check that a smtp service is correctly configured and emails are going out.
I have a check that the service is running, but recently we noticed that the configuration had been altered and no emails where going out, but the service was still running.
One idea I had was to schedule a regular email to be sent, is it possible for nagios to check for that email and throw an alert if it didn't detect it?
Any other ideas to monitor this gratefully received.
is there a free, open source server monitoring tool like Nagios that runs on the MS stack? It will need to be able to detect service stoppages and starts also.
If I have an image with a table containing several rows, say like the periodic table:
Are there any tool I can use to split this into one smaller image with the H He row, another image for the Li Be ... Ne row, etc?
The tool does not have to detect the row borders by itself, specifying a
start offset + row height in pixels is ok.
Manually selecting and cutting/copying in gimp is not an option, I have way to many rows to process.
How can I prevent Thunderbird to add the extension .txt to a file when open the attachment. I have the problem with .patch files which I want look with notepad++. The problem is that notepad++ does not detect the right formating for the file because the extension is .txt.
If I drag the file on the desktop an double click all is working. Why change Thunderbird the file name on opening?

A client exposed information regarding what will become a controversial website in the domain WhoIs after she purchased it from auction.
Is there any whois cache that will detect, save, and share the old whois information for that domain, after it has changed?
(It's a website to provide birth control in countries where it is banned, and she may receive death threats for the information shared on it. Obviously something she wishes to avoid.)
Most of the time, I just want to work on the Mac Mini via remote desktop. Is there a way to have it always use a higher resolution on bootup, even when it doesn't detect a display (it's on a KVM switch)?
Hi All,
Is it possible to hyperlink a url in excel automatically. I mean when the cell starts with something like http or www can I hyperlink that. Currently, I have to hit enter in the cell value in the formula bar to make the link as clickable. Also if I change the value in the cell, the link doesnt get refreshed until I hit enter. Is there a way in excel where it will automatically detect and apply a hyperlink.
Emacs has elaborate protection against simultaneous editing by two different users. If there a way to have that same facility for protecting against simultaneous editing by the same user?
With lots of windows and workspaces open, it's easy to reopen a file that you already have open somewhere else. But because it does not detect a lock conflict when you open the file, you will only learn about the collision when you save.
I've setup a server which I've connected to multiple PCs in my workplace. Sadly, data transfer speeds are at max 3 MB/sec per connection which works out slow for file transfers, especially when transferring large files. I'm using Windows filesharing and the server is a Windows Server 2008 (2 Ghz CPU, 1 GB RAM) and the client PCs mostly running Windows 7. How can I detect bottlenecks in my network and improve file sharing speed within the network?
routinely I'm seeing lots of login attempts to my mail server trying out various login names starting from A to Z coming from the one IP on one day and another IP on another day. Is there any means to detect this type of activities and block accordingly? I asked Watchguard and it appears they don't support this on their XTM series. Anything else I can do other than to have a super long password?

I installed KeepassX on my new Mac which I am still learning the ropes on. I downloaded the program to allow autofill on Chrome ( KeePassHttp.plgx ). It says it needs to be put into directory of KeepassX, but I can't drag it into the application file and I'm not sure yet how to manipulate Terminal. Is terminal what I need to use or is there another way to put it in directory? At this point it is on the Chrome interface, but says it can't detect or make a connection with KX
I have 3 raw images of what was once a 3 disk RAID5 setup. The hardware has been lost and the configuration is unknown.
Does anyone know of some software that can automatically detect the raid configuration and write a single image out?
Basically I have two NIC cards (on-board + Added in PCI slot) on my Linux machine running Fedora 12.By default the OS detects the NIC card in the PCI slot but it fails to detect the on board network card.Following are few details of the same

Since it is also related to network configuration. I posted it here.
I am writing a program that needs to be able to detect the presence of various web hosting control panels. I don't use Plesk, or have access to a server running Plesk, so I am unable to ascertain what file or directory I could test for to reliably conclude that the system is running Plesk.
What file or directory indicates "Yes, this has Plesk installed" that is unlikely to ever change in the future, but would be present on all versions of Plesk out in the wild?
Thanks in advance :)

In Windows 7, applications should be installed to "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)" depending on whether they are 64-bit or 32-bit (respectively, as per this page).
Is there an easy way to check that all the applications on my system are in the correct Program Files directory?
To put it another way, is an easy way to detect any 32-bit applications in "Program Files" and 64-bit applications in "Program Files (x86)"?
Goal: automatically adjusting speed (bpm) of a given set of MP3 files in order to have a collection of music optimized to be heard when I am running. (I realized that I prefer to run with about 168 bpm in my ears).
Of course, I could have some software to detect BPM and then calculate and stretch/squeeze each song using Audacity or a similar tool, however, I'd prefer a solution which requires less manual operation.
I'm trying to prevent people from modifying (most) of my spreadsheet while still alowing them to use the sort function of the AutoFilter. What I've done so far is used the Worksheet_Change event and Application.Undo to automatically undo any values entered into cells that I don't want to be modified. This works great, except that it can't detect changes in formatting. Does anyone know of a means to trigger an event when the format (text/background color) of a cell is changed?
Thanks!
I have a Mac Mini running videos on loop to display publicly, which occasionally crashes I think generally when other OSX functions kicking in. I have a script to detect when VLC is not running and reboot it, but there is often a system message on top "VLC crashed previously". Is there a way to disable this (I can find no option in VLC's advanced options), or perhaps to feed a 'Continue' response to it via Applescript?
