  • Linq2Sql Best Practices

    - by this. __curious_geek
I'm recently migrating to Linq2Sql and all my future projects will be using Linq2Sql. Having said that, I researched a lot on how to properly plug-in Linq2Sql in application design. what to put at what layer ? How do you design your repositories and business layer services ? Should I use DTOs over Linq2Sql entities on interaction layer ? what things should I be careful about ? what problems did you face ? I did not find any rock-solid material that really talked about one single thing and everyone have their own opinions. I'm looking forward to your ideas on how to integrate/use Linq2Sql in projects. My priority is maintenance[it should be maintenable and when multiple people work on same project] and scalabilty [it should have scope of evolution]. Thanks.

  • Upgraded activerecord-sqlserver-adapter from 2.2.22 to 2.3.8 and now getting an ODBC error

    - by stuartc
I have been using MSSQL 2005 with Rails for quite a while now, and decided to bump my gems up on one of my projects and ran into a problem. I moved from 2.2.22 to 2.3.8 (latest as of writing) and all of a sudden I got this: ODBC::Error: S1090 (0) [unixODBC][Driver Manager]Invalid string or buffer length I'm using a DSN connection with FreeTDS my database.yml looks like this: adapter: sqlserver mode: ODBC dsn: 'DRIVER=FreeTDS;TDSVER=7.0;SERVER=10.0.0.5;DATABASE=db;Port=1433;UID=user;PWD=pwd;' Now in the mean time I moved back to 2.2.22 and there are no deprecation warnings and everything seems fine but obviously for the sake of being up to date, any ideas what could have changed in the adaptor that could cause this?

  • Querying Two Tables At Once

    - by John
    Hello, I am trying to do what I believe is called a join query. First, in a MySQL table called "login," I want to look up what "loginid" is in the record where "username" equals $profile. (This will be just one record / row in the MySQL table). Then, I want to take that "loginid" and look up all rows / records in a different MySQL table called "submission," and pull data that have that "loginid." This could possibly be more than one record / row. How do I do this? The code below doesn't seem to work. Thanks in advance, John $profile = mysql_real_escape_string($_GET['profile']); $sqlStr = "SELECT l.username, l.loginid, s.loginid, s.submissionid, s.title, s.url, s.datesubmitted, s.displayurl FROM submission AS s, login AS l WHERE l.username = '$profile', s.loginid = l.loginid ORDER BY s.datesubmitted DESC";

  • Nested joins hide table names

    - by Sergio
Hi: I have three tables: Suppliers, Parts and Types. I need to join all of them while discriminating columns with the same name (say, "id") in the three tables. I would like to successfully run this query: CREATE VIEW Everything AS SELECT Suppliers.name as supplier, Parts.id, Parts.description, Types.typedesc as type FROM Suppliers JOIN (Parts JOIN Types ON Parts.type_id = Types.id) ON Suppliers.id = Parts.supplier_id; My DBMS (sqlite) complains that "there is not such a column (Parts.id)". I guess it forgets table names once the JOIN is done but then how can I refer to the column id that belongs to the table Parts?

  • How to get top 3 frequencies in MySQL?

    - by Amenhotep
Hello, In MySQL I have a table called "meanings" with three columns: "person" (int), "word" (byte, 16 possible values) "meaning" (byte, 26 possible values). A person assigns one or more meanings to each word: person word meaning ------------------- 1 1 4 1 2 19 1 2 7 <-- second meaning for word 2 1 3 5 ... 1 16 2 Then another person, and so on. There will be thousands of persons. I need to find for each of the 16 words the top three meanings (with their frequencies). Something like: word 1: meaning 5 (35% of people), meaning 19 (22% of people), meaning 2 (13% of people) word 2: meaning 8 (57%), meaning 1 (18%), meaning 22 (7%) ... Is it possible to solve this with a single MySQL query? (If this problem is a classic one and has been answered elsewhere, I would appreciate if you could give me a link to the solution.) Thank you very much, ve

  • rookie MySql question about paging; Is one query enough?

    - by Camran
I have managed to get paging to work, almost. I want to display to the user, total nr of records found, and the currently displayed records. Ex: 4000 found, displaying 0-100. I am testing this with the nr 2 (because I don't have that many records, have like 20). So I am using LIMIT $start, $nr_results; Do I have to make two queries in order to display the results the way I want, one query fetching all records and then make a mysql_num_rows to get all records, then the one with the LIMIT ? I have this: mysql_num_rows($qry_result); $total_pages = ceil($num_total / $res_per_page); //$res_per_page==2 and $num_total = 2 if ($p - 10 < 1) { $pagemin=1; } else { $pagemin = $p - 10; } if ($p + 10 $total_pages) { $pagemax = $total_pages; } else { $pagemax = $p + 10; } Here is the query: SELECT mt.*, fordon.*, boende.*, elektronik.*, business.*, hem_inredning.*, hobby.* FROM classified mt LEFT JOIN fordon ON fordon.classified_id = mt.classified_id LEFT JOIN boende ON boende.classified_id = mt.classified_id LEFT JOIN elektronik ON elektronik.classified_id = mt.classified_id LEFT JOIN business ON business.classified_id = mt.classified_id LEFT JOIN hem_inredning ON hem_inredning.classified_id = mt.classified_id LEFT JOIN hobby ON hobby.classified_id = mt.classified_id ORDER BY modify_date DESC LIMIT 0, 2 Thanks, if you need more input let me know. Basically Q is, do I have to make two queries?

  • Display another field in the referenced table for multiple columns with performance issues in mind

    - by israkir
    I have a table of edge like this: ------------------------------- | id | arg1 | relation | arg2 | ------------------------------- | 1 | 1 | 3 | 4 | ------------------------------- | 2 | 2 | 6 | 5 | ------------------------------- where arg1, relation and arg2 reference to the ids of objects in another object table: -------------------- | id | object_name | -------------------- | 1 | book | -------------------- | 2 | pen | -------------------- | 3 | on | -------------------- | 4 | table | -------------------- | 5 | bag | -------------------- | 6 | in | -------------------- What I want to do is that, considering performance issues (a very big table more than 50 million of entries) display the object_name for each edge entry rather than id such as: --------------------------- | arg1 | relation | arg2 | --------------------------- | book | on | table | --------------------------- | pen | in | bag | --------------------------- What is the best select query to do this? Also, I am open to suggestions for optimizing the query - adding more index on the tables etc... EDIT: Based on the comments below: 1) @Craig Ringer: PostgreSQL version: 8.4.13 and only index is id for both tables. 2) @andrefsp: edge is almost x2 times bigger than object.

  • Advanced LINQ Update Statement

    - by user1902490
I have a data base with Price_old like: Date --- Hour --- Price _____________________________ Jan 1 --- 1 --- $3.0 Jan 1 --- 2 --- $3.1 Jan 1 --- 3 --- $3.3 Jan 1 --- 4 --- $3.15 Jan 2 --- 1 --- $2.95 Jan 2 --- 2 --- $3.2 Jan 2 --- 3 --- $3.05 What I then have is a spreadsheet, with the same structure, that I will be reading into a datatable, I'll call the new datatable Price_New, note that price new may not have all the same date/hours as Price_Old So, I end up with 2 datatables, Price_Old, and Price_New, and what I need to do is update Price_old with the new prices in Price_New, and then commit those new prices to the Database. I am kinda new to LINQ (about 30 mins of experience) and would really appreciate if someone could give me a pointer or two on whether or not this is doing in LINQ and what the best method would be. Thanks

  • Select the first row in a join of two tables in one statement

    - by Oscar Cabrero
hi i need to select only the first row from a query that joins tables A and B, on table B exist multiple records with same name. there are not identifiers in any of the two tables. i cannt change the scheme either because i do not own the DB TABLE A NAME TABLE B NAME DATA1 DATA2 Select Distinct A.NAME,B.DATA1,B.DATA2 From A Inner Join B on A.NAME = B.NAME this gives me NAME DATA1 DATA2 sameName 1 2 sameName 1 3 otherName 5 7 otherName 8 9 but i need to retrieve only one row per name NAME DATA1 DATA2 sameName 1 2 otherName 5 7 i was able to do this by adding the result into a temp table with a identity column and the select the Min Id per name. the problem here is that i require to do this in one single statement. this is a DB2 database thanks

  • Using 'in' in Join

    - by Ruslan
    i have two selects a & b and i join them like: select * from ( select n.id_b || ',' || s.id_b ids, n.name, s.surname from names n, surnames s where n.id_a = s.id_a ) a left join ( select sn.id, sn.second_name ) b on b.id in (a.ids) in this case join doesn't work :( The problem is in b.id in (a.ids). But why if it looks like 12 in (12,24) and no result :(

  • Django: Grouping by Dates and Servers

    - by TheLizardKing
So I am trying to emulate google app's status page: http://www.google.com/appsstatus#hl=en but for backups for our own servers. Instead of service names on the left it'll be server names but the dates and hopefully the pagination will be there too. My models look incredibly similar to this: from django.db import models STATUS_CHOICES = ( ('UN', 'Unknown'), ('NI', 'No Issue'), ('IS', 'Issue'), ('NR', 'Not Running'), ) class Server(models.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=32) def __unicode__(self): return self.name class Backup(models.Model): server = models.ForeignKey(Server) created = models.DateField(auto_now_add=True) modified = models.DateTimeField(auto_now=True) status = models.CharField(max_length=2, choices=STATUS_CHOICES, default='UN') issue = models.TextField(blank=True) def __unicode__(self): return u'%s: %s' % (self.server, self.get_status_display()) My issue is that I am having a hell of a time displaying the information I need. Everyday a little after midnight a cron job will run and add a row for each server for that day, defaulting on status unknown (UN). My backups.html: {% extends "base.html" %} {% block content %} <table> <tr> <th>Name</th> {% for server in servers %} <th>{{ created }}</th> </tr> <tr> <td>{{ server.name }}</td> {% for backup in server.backup_set.all %} <td>{{ backup.get_status_display }}</td> {% endfor %} </tr> {% endfor %} </table> {% endblock content %} This actually works but I do not know how to get the dates to show. Obviously {{ created }} doesn't do anything but the servers don't have create dates. Backups do and because it's a cron job there should only be X number of rows with any particular date (depending on how many servers we are following for that day). Summary I want to create a table, X being server names, Y being dates starting at today while all the cells being the status of a backup. The above model and template should hopefully give you an idea what my thought process but I am willing to alter anything. Basically I am create a fancy excel spreadsheet.

  • Building Stored Procedure to group data into ranges with roughly equal results in each bucket

    - by Len
I am trying to build one procedure to take a large amount of data and create 5 range buckets to display the data. the buckets ranges will have to be set according to the results. Here is my existing SP GO /****** Object: StoredProcedure [dbo].[sp_GetRangeCounts] Script Date: 03/28/2010 19:50:45 ******/ SET ANSI_NULLS ON GO SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON GO ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[sp_GetRangeCounts] @idMenu int AS declare @myMin decimal(19,2), @myMax decimal(19,2), @myDif decimal(19,2), @range1 decimal(19,2), @range2 decimal(19,2), @range3 decimal(19,2), @range4 decimal(19,2), @range5 decimal(19,2), @range6 decimal(19,2) SELECT @myMin=Min(modelpropvalue), @myMax=Max(modelpropvalue) FROM xmodelpropertyvalues where modelPropUnitDescriptionID=@idMenu set @myDif=(@myMax-@myMin)/5 set @range1=@myMin set @range2=@myMin+@myDif set @range3=@range2+@myDif set @range4=@range3+@myDif set @range5=@range4+@myDif set @range6=@range5+@myDif select @myMin,@myMax,@myDif,@range1,@range2,@range3,@range4,@range5,@range6 select t.range as myRange, count(*) as myCount from ( select case when modelpropvalue between @range1 and @range2 then 'range1' when modelpropvalue between @range2 and @range3 then 'range2' when modelpropvalue between @range3 and @range4 then 'range3' when modelpropvalue between @range4 and @range5 then 'range4' when modelpropvalue between @range5 and @range6 then 'range5' end as range from xmodelpropertyvalues where modelpropunitDescriptionID=@idmenu) t group by t.range order by t.range This calculates the min and max value from my table, works out the difference between the two and creates 5 buckets. The problem is that if there are a small amount of very high (or very low) values then the buckets will appear very distorted - as in these results... range1 2806 range2 296 range3 75 range5 1 Basically I want to rebuild the SP so it creates buckets with equal amounts of results in each. I have played around with some of the following approaches without quite nailing it... SELECT modelpropvalue, NTILE(5) OVER (ORDER BY modelpropvalue) FROM xmodelpropertyvalues - this creates a new column with either 1,2,3,4 or 5 in it ROW_NUMBER()OVER (ORDER BY modelpropvalue) between @range1 and @range2 ROW_NUMBER()OVER (ORDER BY modelpropvalue) between @range2 and @range3 or maybe i could allocate every record a row number then divide into ranges from this?

  • Insert multiple records from a XML string differing on one parameter in SQL SERVER 2008

    - by Rohit
Below in a query which inserts records to SimpleDictationProfileMapping table after reading it from a XML string. Now this query inserts a single record in which DictationCaptureProfileID is @dictationCaptureProfileId . Now i want to insert multiple rows in which @dictationCaptureProfileId is different and other 2 values are same. What i want to achieve by this is in case parent changes all child values should also change. INSERT INTO SimpleDictationProfileMapping ( DictationCaptureProfileID, DictationProfileMappingAttributeID, DictationProfileMappingAttributeValue ) SELECT @dictationCaptureProfileId, row.value('@attrId','varchar(max)'), row.value('@value', 'varchar(max)') FROM @simpleDictationCaptureProfileMappings.nodes('/simpleMappingAtribute/attribute') AS d ( row ) ; I want INSERT INTO SimpleDictationProfileMapping ( DictationCaptureProfileID OR (SELECT DictationCaptureProfileID FROM DictationCaptureProfile WHERE SystemDictationCaptureProfileID = @systemDictationCaptureProfileID), DictationProfileMappingAttributeID, DictationProfileMappingAttributeValue ) SELECT @dictationCaptureProfileId , row.value('@attrId','varchar(max)'), row.value('@value', 'varchar(max)') FROM @simpleDictationCaptureProfileMappings.nodes ('/simpleMappingAtribute/attribute') AS d ( row ) ; Please tell how to achieve this.

  • How to display SUM fields from a detailed table in a master table

    - by max
What is the best approach to display the summery of DETAILED.Fields in its master table? E.g. I have a master table called 'BILL' with all the bill related data and a detailed table ('BILL_DETAIL') with the bill detailed related data, like NAME, PRICE, TAX, ... Now I want to list all BILLS, without the details, but with the sum of the PRICE and TAX stored in the detail table. Here is a simplified schema of that tables: TABLE BILL ---------- - ID - NAME - ADDRESS - ... TABLE BILL_DETAIL ----------------- - ID - BILLID - PORDUCT_NAME - PRICE - TAX - ... The retrieved table row should look like this: BILL.CUSTOMER_NAME, BILL.CUSTOMER_ADDRESS, sum(BILL_DETAIL.PRICE), sum(BILL.DETAIL.TAX), ... Any sugguestions?

  • Copying Some from a PostgreSQL Server to Another

    - by whollychao
I am in need of an application that can periodically transmit select rows from a PostgreSQL database across a network to a second PostgreSQL server. Typically these will be the most recent row added, pulled and transmitted every 10-30 seconds. The primary servers run in a MS Windows environment with a high-latency, and occasionally intermittent, network connection. Therefore, any application would have to be tolerant of this and ideally automatically reconnect / resend data that could not be transmitted. Due to the environment and the requirements, a full-blown replication package would be unnecessary. I appreciate any help anyone has with this problem.

  • Autmatically create table on MySQL server based on date?

    - by Anthony
Is there an equivalent to cron for MySQL? I have a PHP script that queries a table based on the month and year, like: SELECT * FROM data_2010_1 What I have been doing until now is, every time the script executes it does a query for the table, and if it exists, does the work, if it doesn't it creates the table. I was wondering if I can just set something up on the MySQL server itself that will create the table (based on a default table) at the stroke of midnight on the first of the month. Update Based on the comments I've gotten, I'm thinking this isn't the best way to achieve my goal. So here's two more questions: If I have a table with thousands of rows added monthly, is this potentially a drag on resources? If so, what is the best way to partition this table, since the above is verboten? What are the potential problems with my home-grown method I originally thought up?
