What does "Flashing the BIOS" mean? Are there benefits to flashing it? Is safe? Should it be done inside or outside of an OS, say my current Win7 installation? Thanks!
Hi
I have the following problem: when starting Visual Studio 2008, it says "Cannot find one or more components. Please reinstall the application." and stops. With the help of Sysinternals ProcessMonitor, I found out that Visual Studio could not load the atl90.dll 9.0.30729.4148 from the WinSxS folder. I tried to manually copy the older atl90.dll 9.0.30729.1 with the result that Visual Studio works again. Now I call this a dirty workaround, and not a solution. Plus I still don't know the reason why the atl90.dll disappeared in the first place.
So my questions:
- Does anyone know of a reason why this might have happened?
- Does anyone know a real solution to the problem, e.g. a Microsoft download that includes the atl90.dll in the correct version 9.0.30729.4148 that installs into WinSxS?
Some details:
- WinXp SP3
- missing DLL: C:\WINNT\WinSxS\x86_Microsoft.VC90.ATL_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_9.0.30729.4148_x-ww_353599c2\atl90.dll
- workaround DLL: C:\WINNT\WinSxS\x86_Microsoft.VC90.ATL_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_9.0.30729.1_x-ww_d01483b2\atl90.dll
- manifests in WinSxS seem to be alright, but unfortunately all point to the missing version 9.0.30729.4148
Thanks, Markus
Sometimes (maybe one case in 3), when I unplug the wireless mouse receiver on my Sony VGN-CS215J laptop, there is no "da-doomp" sound, even after a minute or two. And if I plug the receiver back in there is no corresponding "du-dump" sound and the mouse is still (immediately) "live". This can happen when the activity light is out and there's nothing obviously going on -- it's not simply that the box is too busy. Other times one gets the expected behavior (and usually I get the correct behavior if I plug the receiver back in a few seconds and then unplug it after a "failure").
The reason this is significant is that if I get no "da-doomp" then the laptop will not sleep properly -- it will go to sleep initially, but then reawaken a few minutes later inside my laptop case and proceed to run the battery down (and no doubt overheat the unit).
Any ideas?
My wife is experiencing this with her work laptop--she presses Ctrl-Alt-Delete to lock and she gets the BSOD. The first troubleshooting step is usually to "re-image", and it's locked down.
So with this question, I am asking whether the behavior is unique enough that someone in the stack-universe knows exactly what this is (something I can tell her to tell her help desk support).
Update: help desk said to order more RAM. Alt-tabbing caused the same behavior today. And...she learned that multiple users are affected.
I'm not sure I'll be able to clean any additional info that will help w/ troubleshooting. I'll leave the question here for a bit and if an answer ends up being the actual solution, I'll accept it. If not, I think I should probably remove the question (i'll check meta).
Update #2.5: The cause appears to be a ctrl-alt-delete keystroke while Sales Team Configurator is open. This can either be to lock the screen (there are workaround in answers already present) or to unlock the screen (no workaround for that).
We had an unused box at work so took it home. It had been joined to the domain and hasn't been unjoined. When I try to use it at home (logging in with a local admin account) I can't seem to access internet pages.
It gets correct IP and gateway for the local network and correct DNS servers for the home ADSL connection.
I can happily ping the home router (which doesn't have any tricky firewall settings).
Can't seem to ping outside, get any DNS to resolve, or (obviously) get any web pages.
Is there some problem here with this having been joined to the domain?
I recently reformatted my box and I reinstalled XP Media Center 2005. My TV signal is perfect if I plug it directly into the tv; and at any rate even shows I recorded previous to the reformat are blury. I have installed all updates (including Media Player 11) and I have installed a codec pack for different file types. I have no clue why it wouldn't display right. When I play the previously recorded shows in VLC they come out perfectly clear... Any ideas?
i have an external hard drive that i have set to Drive F which on it contains some programs that i have shortcuts on the desktop how i have a second external hard drive which i store my music on which is auto assigned to Drive E, due to someone thinking that Australians love to have f** wings on power plugs for hard drives while power boards have each socket close together i can have both of these hard drives set at the same time
my music hard drive i normally only plug up when i sync music to my ipod but on occasion when i unplug my music hard drive and plug my old one back in or at times when i turn on my computer with the music hard drive in, turn off my computer and turn it back on with my old hard drive it's drive letter gets switched to E
i get annoyed having to always go into disk management and change the drive letter back to F when this happens so i am wondering if
I can lock my hard drive to always be F, if anything else tries to be F it can fail for all i care
If there is a batch file i can use that'll go though all the steps of Disk Management to change a drive's letter, that way i can set it up in the startup folder
I swap my hard drive to a new computer with vista 32
I get 0x0000007b stop error on bootup
I tried using the cd to do the repair but it fails. I think it is because I have the wrong hard drive driver install for vista or it is missing.
How can I fix this from the command line
what is the difference between standby and hibernate?

when the power is unplugged my system will dumped. i want to do illegal shutdown(holding power button) and the switch it on.? why?
I have a Web Cam thats built into my laptop, no drivers exist for a 64Bit env (Thank you Sony!). Now I am wondering if I can somehow publish the web cam from XP Mode into my Win 7 environment.
Does anyone know if this is possible?
Hello...
When I browse internet, basic HTML gets loaded on my computer.
For eg.- for orkut or facebook login, only the text box appears, and when inputs are provided, and redirection is done,it says "error on page".
Even on google search, basic HTML gets loaded on my computer..
I tried installing new Internet version i.e., IE8,but the same problem.
Kildly provide a good solution to this problem.
I have an old laptop HDD that ran Vista that I need to get some pictures and movies off of. I've attached it via SATA cable to my new Win 7 (64 bit) machine and it mounts fine, except I can't see the main user profile in the D:\Users directory. I've changed ownership and permissions for the D: drive to my C:\ Username but still no luck. I read something about it being caused by the UAC being active on the Vista machine. Is this true? Is there a way to disable this and gain access to the main profile without putting it back into the old laptop (it's fried and won't boot)?
I have bought a PRIMERGY TX100 S1 Server with a trial version of WindowsServer 2008 R2 Web Edition.
My internet connection with a static IP is very very fast (about 50 mega bit per second) for both downloading and uploading.
My site serves text based contents only, no streaming.
How many simultaneous requests can be handled by a medium class server on the average?
Can it handle at least 1000 simultaneous requests?
The description for "Use mandatory profiles on the RD Session Host server" is a little ambiguous:
This policy setting allows you to specify whether Remote Desktop
Services uses a mandatory profile for all users connecting remotely to
the RD Session Host server.
If you enable this policy setting, Remote Desktop Services uses the
path specified in the Set path for Remote Desktop Services Roaming
User Profile policy setting as the root folder for the mandatory user
profile. All users connecting remotely to the RD Session Host server
use the same user profile.
If you disable or do not configure this policy setting, mandatory user
profiles are not used by users connecting remotely to the RD Session
Host server.
I have a situation where only some users need to use mandatory profiles for logging in to a Remote Desktop Session Host. If I have some users with ntuser.dat and some users ntuser.man in their roaming profile what will RD Session Host do
To a user who has ntuser.man in their roaming profile and has the setting set to Disabled?
To a user who has ntuser.dat in their roaming profile and has the setting set to Enabled?
Hello
I use Privoxy on my XP host to filter/rewrite web pages, but it's slower because all connections go through Privoxy's single port.
According to this post on StackOverflow, by default, browsers support more than one simultaneous connection, which would explain why going through Privoxy is slower.
Does someone know of a similar application that could handle more than one connection?
Thank you.
Running
FSUtil 8Dot3Name Scan /v /s C:
gives you a list of potential 8.3 paths in the registry that are referring to your file system, but is there any tool that can actually convert those paths to long paths in the registry?
I do understand this could break some programs, but I have backups so I'd be willing to give it a try.
(I tried to make a tool like this myself, but it's harder than it looks, because of false positives and all the varieties of ways the path could be embedded.)
In IE 9 RC or in beta, the embedded video is not shown in the web page. I verified the security settings in "internet options". Did not find any issue. Please find the screen shot below. I am able to view the flash videos in Youtube. But, for some reason, in some sites the embedded video is not shown.
I don't have this issue with firefox.
UPDATE:
I am able to see view the embedded video in Admin account. But not able to view it in Standard account.
So I just got a nice new VPS service. I was wondering what a good number of 'MaxClients' would be, for a server that will host a personal website, some blogs, etc, and your experiences with one server maxclients stuff! The default of Ubu server is 150.
I have a SharePoint 2010 VM setup in VirtualBox and I was using local machine accounts to handle security on the server.
While preparing for a demo it came time to have some meaningful users on my VM image. I followed some docs on promoting my server to a Domain Controller in a new forrest.
So now I have [MachineName].SPDEMO.CONTOSO.com and I can add users as needed.
However, when I try to connect to my SharePoint sites I am getting a white screen with the error:
"Cannot connect to the configuration database"
I changed the pool identity account of each of my IIS app pools to the new Administrator account and started the services successfully but I can't get the SQL services to start up.
When I try to start them I get the following error:
Windows could not start the SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 17058.
In the event log I see the following error:
The SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) service terminated with service-specific error %%17058.
Can I recover from this or should I roll back or just uninstall the Domain Controller role. I'd like to keep the server as a standalone DC so I can do some user profile creation/management but I need the SharePoint bits to work as well.
I have a value in the database which is 2.700000002. When I run a query in Management studio in SQL SERVER 2005 I get 2.7. But when I run in SQL SERVER 2000 query analyzer it comes 2.700000002.
2.70000002 is correct why is SQL SERVER 2005 trying to change the value by rounding it or selecting the floor value?
I have an SVN 1.6 server running on a WindowsServer 2003 machine, served via CollabNet's svnserve running as a service (using the svn protocol). I would like to avoid storing passwords in plain text on the server. Unfortunately, the default configuration and SASL with DIGEST-MD5 both require plain text password storage.
What is the simplest possible way to avoid storing passwords in plain text?
My constraints are:
Path-based access control to the SVN repository needs to be possible (currently I can use an authz file). As far as I know, this is more-or-less independent of the authentication method.
Active directory is available, but it's not just domain-connected windows machines that need to authenticate: workgroup PCs, Linux PCs and software that uses PySVN to perform SVN operations all need to be able to access the repositories.
Upgrading the SVN server is feasible, as is installing additional software.
hi,
i've upgraded to win7 (on a new machine) and wanted to use my old moviemaker projects again.
the problem is that those projects refer to files of a certain path-structure which i can't rebuild under win7 ("documents and settings" is blocked).
is there a way to kind of batch-convert those projects?
some file specs of the MSWMM file format (for coding a little utility) would be helpful aswell.
thx
I have 2 laptops with Vista Home Premium editions. I bought the upgrade license from MS, to upgrade one of my laptops. I have upgraded one of the laptops fine. Now the question is, If I want to upgrade the second laptop but uninstall the windows 7 on the first one, would this be possible. I am only wanting to swap the OS onto the other laptop as the other one is faster. Is this possible? and if so how can it be done?
