    - by benonsoftware
Well first I would like to add at the moment I have had 1174 page views. That does not count people who just browse via the homepage so add around another 200 visitors! Well back on the subject I have recently joined Ubuntu-AU (Australia) LoCo team and it is great! Basilar it is a Ubuntu loco community group and just before the my first time being at a meeting I was emailing the admin and he said that there was a stop for a team reporter and I put my hand up and he said 'yes'. He was actually going to ask at the team meeting I would have said no way! But because I saw it before hand and I asked him I wanted to do it. If you live in Australia consider join Ubuntu-AU they also have a Launchpad team.

  • How to phrase the from field in system generated emails my site sends?

    - by Genadinik
I have a community site that sends emails after certain actions like 1) When someone makes a comment 2) When someone does something called "suggest solution" 3) When someone makes a comment in the suggested solution which is different from a regular comment. What I am wondering is what is the best way to make the from field of the email appear? Right now it is something like 1) [email protected] 2) [email protected] 3) [email protected] But 2 and 3 look so strange when receiving the email. What is the nice and professional way to send these? Thanks!

  • Advise on effectively re-entering CPP world [closed]

    - by Aadith
I am getting back into C++ world after nearly a decade. Apparently, there has been a world of development. Would like to get the developer community's advice as to what would be a good approach to have a smooth take-off. To start with, I have done the following: Read up (very briefly) on C++ 11 standards Installed GCC 4.7 Wrote a Hello World program I am sure getting a decent book and reading through it would do. But I am looking for any strategic advise experts might have to share. Trying to leverage on past experience to have a short but effective initial learning span. What would be top few things I would have to look into?

  • Relaunch of wwwCoder.com

It's been years since I've been active in the community, but I'm back with a newly redesigned wwwCoder.com. The site was taken over by spammers, and was essientially a ghost town, but I reworked it to bring a technology topics aggregator. The site provides full text searching on the popular podcasts, vidcasts, and blogs. Hit the home page to get a quick summary of what's going on with Microsoft developers. Let me know what you think. • Dell Latitude D830 DVD Drive Not Recognized

    - by DragonFire
Unlike some people who have issues with the video or WiFi drivers, I suffer from not being able to use the DVD drive on this laptop. Upon POST, the BIOS sees it and I am able to open the tray as well; however, once the system starts to load up Ubuntu or other distros (Debian and Linux Mint), I lose all functionality. Plus, I don't see it listed as a device in the OS. I've poured over the internet the past few days trying to see if anyone else has the issue, or did and found a solution but sadly, nothing anywhere so far. So, I thought I would ask the community here and see what you all think. Worse case scenario, I have some dead weight to a nice little machine. Thanks! PS I honestly think Linux doesn't like the IDE interface the disc drive has.

A couple of bits of news. I did a number of updates to the HackingSilverlightCodeBrowser here:http://www.hackingsilverlight.net/HackingSilverlightCodeBrowser.html including things like MEF and IsolatedStorage. As to the community edition of the book, I'm still trying to get some contributors to finish. I've been slammed with 60 hour weeks so chapter 2 and 4 and appendix a still need edits. maybe a weeks worth of work pending time which tends to be limited in my life. :)...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • How to create and maintain patch on Debian package?

    - by ???
I want to patch on Trac package. I know how to patch and rebuild the package, but there are some things I don't understand very well. My patch is something dangerous and not likely to commit back to the community. So, let me just say, it's a very private patch. But, I want my patch keep working when the Ubuntu packages upgrade. (Should I apt-get source trac and move my patch to the new version of source directory each time the Trac upgrades?) I see there is a patch/ directory (many using quilt I guess) in debian/, but I don't know how to use it? Will debuild automatic apply all patches in the patch/ directory? And what about dpkg-buildpackage? Is there some environ variables to control the selection of patches to apply?

  • How to Build Business Links With SEO Value

In order to create order and plan in the site and make it more identifiable by a business community around, SEO link building requires membership strategies that aid it in its automatic operations by following a universal hub with potential links. The starting point is to obtain a link with the national or regional authority of commerce through its website. This will give the site a licensed look and due to its frequent interaction with the government body it will be a confidence boost for other links. This will also help market it as a recognized site that is secure to communicate with.

  • Is this ask ubuntu, or am i in twilight zone? [closed]

    - by user66987
I had a question to canonical, but that got closed. Is this ask ubuntu? Sure doesn't seem like it. I had a valid question, but since it contained critisism of one of the ubuntu teams, it got closed down. All I am after is a 100% translated ubuntu into my language. But my local team do not work, so this will not happen. So much for an open community. Well, I will think real hard next time I can help someone, and I will probably not. Since I can't get any help. I have one question, and this is directed at someone in charge of ask ubuntu. Why does a valdid question get locked down? My closed question Yeah, this is such a good comunity. Don't expect any help from me in the future.

  • What type of application is this called?

    - by boatingcow
I am working on a web-based application which combines elements of what my client would call a CMS (content management system) and CRM (customer relations management) but also adds in many other business-specific features such as bookings management, staff task allocation management, wages calculations, document version control etc. However, I'm struggling to find a catch-all term for this type of application so I can research how other people have gone about creating such an integrated solution. Can anyone recommend a term I can use to refer to this, both internally in our team, for the client so they know what to call the 'system' and also for me personally, so that I can ask the Stack community further questions?

  • Two approaches to adding freelance/contract work to resume [on hold]

    - by melhosseiny
Approach A Title, Company A Freelance + Title, Company B Title, Company C Freelance + Title, Company D Title, Intern, Company E Approach B Title, Company A Title, Company B Title, Self Title, Intern, Company D In approach B, you would list all freelance/contract work you did under the "Title, Self" experience. For example: Company A Project 1 Project 2 Company B Project 1 Question Which of these two approaches is better? And why? Update I think there's value in this question to the community as it relates specifically to programmers. I'd think that handling this issue on a resume is career-specific. Also, I've found similar questions on the site: Referring to freelance marketplaces as evidence of the experience for a potential full-time employer How to write freelancing in resume for programmers job In any case, I don't think it should be closed. It should be migrated to The Workplace or Freelancing.

  • How can I convince a project manager that there is no way to solve all the compatibility issues?

    - by SAFAD
I have been working on this project for more than a year now, and we are close to release, the project manager wants the product to be perfect and working in every single aspect. I like that and I love working under the perfection idea, but it seems he is delaying the launch too much because of compatibility issues, he wants the product to work in every single installation, every single configuration possible, and in most cases, the product just works without issues when it's on the hands of the client. UPDATE : yes the product doesn't work properly when there are conflicts, for example, other products that don't use guidelines nor standards to load libraries (causes double library load which leads to failure), cache is another example and so on..... but we warn the clients about the conflict before purchasing and help them fixing it after purchasing I've tried to explain it by giving some examples on major products, he understands the situation, but can not believe that it is near impossible (if it is not impossible) to do what he wants. Hope it is clarified enough for the community to answer.

  • DotNetNuke 5.4.2 Released

I am pleased to announce the release of DotNetNuke 5.4.2. 5.4.2 is a monthly stabilization release which addresses a couple dozen issues with the 5.4 release. Because of the 5.4.1 release, the 5.4.2 release cycle was shortened which meant that a few high profile issues were not able to make the cutoff for this release. We expect to address those issues in the 5.4.3 release due out in June. This release also includes numerous code contributions and bug fixes submitted by the community. • How to load kernel from live cd on UEFI install of Ubuntu 12.10?

    - by Geezanansa
Running a GYGABYTE FM1 motherboard which is using a AMD 3870k APU with a new WS Caviar 1TB HDD. Following the advice in the Motherboard manual and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI have now got to grub screen for UEFI install. The dvd.iso being used is Ubuntu 12.10 desktop amd64. The hdd has had a gpt partition table made for, by using gparted when in a live desktop session(booted in bios mode)but decided to leave it unformatted with the intention of using installer to set up partitions. Booting live dvd gives grub list with the option to "install ubuntu" but get "can not read cd/0" and "the kernel must be loaded first" errors; when that option is selected. Any pointers on how to get installer going for UEFI install would be good. Thanks in advance.

  • What are the challenges and benefits of writing games with a functional language?

    - by McMuttons
While I know that functional languages aren't the most commonly used for game writing, there are a lot of benefits associate with them that seem like they would be interesting in any programming context. Especially the ease of parallelization I would think could be very useful as focus is moving toward more and more processors. Also, with F# as a new member of the .NET family, it can be used directly with XNA, for example, which lowers the threshold quite a bit, as opposed to going with LISP, Haskell, Erlang, etc. If anyone has experience writing games with functional code, what has turned out to be the positives and negatives? What was it suited for, what not? Edit: Finding it hard to decide that there's a single good answer for this, so it's probably better suited as a community wiki post.

  • Hosting my own SVN repositories

    - by TheAdamGaskins
I've been experimenting with Google Code and Sourceforge and the like, and am happy with what I've found. The main problem with them, is that you have to have your project be open source to use them, so anybody can edit them. So... is there some way I can have my own svn repositories on my own server? I have FTP access, cpanel, and all that. If it helps any: Operating system Linux cPanel Version 11.26.20 Architecture x86_64 MySQL version 5.0.91-community-log Apache version 2.2.13 PHP version 5.2.11 cPanel Pro 1.0 (RC1)

  • Big delay to open web pages on Ubuntu 11.10; also slow torrent client speed

    - by user54234
The keywords for my issue are too common among other issues, so, I couldn't find anything that could answer me: why will it take around 30+ seconds for any of my browsers to open a page? happens even with google.com... with both Firefox and Chromium. This does not happen while I use Windows, from exactly the same point at my house (I've got enough wi-fi signal here for sure). Also, the standard torrent client won't hit the max download speed... I can hit 1 Mb/s with utorrent on Windows, and can't go over 300 kbps here. I tried changing the program settings, no results. Please help me. I REALLY don't wanna go back to Windows. Thanks in advance, I admire this community, and I'm sorry that I couldn't find something that could help me. I already solved a lot of issues without asking, but couldn't do it this time.

  • What do you use to create sprite graphics? [closed]

    - by SimpleRookie
Possible Duplicate: What tools do you use for 2D art/sprite creation? What do you folks suggest for creating sprite graphics and sprite sheets? I fiddle with pixelformer and tilestudio. Pixelfromer has a kicken interface, it is quick and easy to make graphics, but a bit cumbersom if you want to make a spritemap. Tile Studio is a interesting mix or tiles and maps, but it is a bit buggy and basic. The Adobe series, just don't really seem to handle tiny graphics well. • Need help migrating from Wubi

    - by neilh
I know this question has been asked, but I am looking for specific help with my partition selection. I want to migrate my install from wubi to be a dual boot. When I installed it I choose a small, partition, around 30GB. I am following these instructions: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MigrateWubi I see sda4 matches that size, but has mount point as '/host', am I okay to use this one? EDIT: Here is a screenshot of my partitions. http://i.imgur.com/ozPe0.png My windows partition is actually not there, that is down as sdb1, so safely out of the way? I can confirm sda4 is the location of the 'virtual partition' and is an otherwise, unused 26GB partition. It's also where I would like to migrate to a full install to.
