I plan on buying Windows 7 Ultimate Edition to run on an old Pentium 4. I also want to run Win7 virtual machines inside Win7. My question is two fold:
Do I need a license for each Virtual Machine
Does the answer change if I use a third party virtualization platform (e.g. VirtualBox, VMWare, QEMU, etc) as opposed to VirtualPC
Directly from Gmail's integrated chat feature, is it possible to chat with Windows Live Hotmail contacts? I already added them, of course, but they don't show up in the chat thing.
I googled it and some old stuff about a Jabber client came up, but it is kind of outdated.
Any help is appreciated.
I'm looking to buy a new laptop (the new studio 14 from Dell). The processor for this laptop is an Intel Core i5-520M.
Think link http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-31012_7-10379487-10355804.html says that it supports only 1 CPU.
Also Dell recommend the Professionnal version even tough Home Premium is the default choice. So I'm a little confuse as does Windows 7 Home Premium support Dual Core Processors ?
Is it possible to install SQL Server Express 2005 SP3 on Windows 2008 Server R2? If so, is there anything special that needs to be done to get it to install properly? I ran into some issues with the installer and wasn't sure if it could be installed with 2008 R2.
I have a windows 2012 server with 3 storage spaces set up, each containing a mirrored pair of 2TB drives.

Does anybody know how you could delete the downloaded message bodies from the HDD in Windows Live Mail using a Hotmail/Live e-mail account? I know you can do it with a Gmail account in WLM by right clicking on the inbox, clicking properties, local file tab and clicking remove messages (which deletes the message bodies and not the headers).
People in our company asked to encrypting some of the shared folders published in a local Windows 2003 File Server. The requirements are:
Encrypt the files, so only a user or group or users can open them
Avoid password protected files. The encryption process should be transparent to the users
Though files are encrypted, the backup software (BackupExec) must be able to copy and access binary for verification
Cannot install tools/software in user's PCs, they want this to work automatically
As we have very little experience managing servers, we'll be grateful for any help or suggestion offered.
Occasionally, my PC grinds to a halt, and by the time I get any monitoring tools open (don't forget my PC is slow at this point), performance has picked up a bit.
A friend recently told me he uses iPulse, which is awesome since it's always running, and you can just glance at it when there's an issue to see what is happening. Unfortunately it's only for the Mac.
Does anybody know of a good Windows system monitoring tool similar to iPulse for the Mac?
I hear that Windows8 Pro can use full disk encryption. I also understand that Win8 is targeting the "slate" / "tablet" form factor specifically. But all my previous experience with BitLocker requires you to put in some kind of PIN or password at boot time -- how can I do this without a (hardware) keyboard?
This preview of an upcoming Win8 tablet mentions BitLocker but doesn't address the PIN issue. Am I missing something?
i just used roxo to system restore my laptop from its first saved state. now it won't boot up. it just says. "bootmgr compressed"
what do i do with this.
FYI my laptop is an HP Mini which do not have a cd rom. so Booting up windows XP from cd to fix it won't help me..
Please Help me solve this problem?
Hello :)
I need to test a piece of code which only seems to fail on Windows XP RTM. Unfortunately, all my disks came slipstreamed with SP2 on-disk. Is there any way to install an RTM install using my SP2 CD and key?

PS: Not sure if this belongs on SU or not -- please vote it over there if you think so.
I want to create a template of Windows Server 2008 R2 for virtualization. Therefore I use the sysprep tool by Microsoft. This works fine. I just wonder what the generalize option is good for.
Thanks
We are having trouble adding our batch scripts to the new Windows 7 taskar.
Our batchfiles take some arguments and just execute other application based on those arguments .
To keep it simple, we created some shortcuts for our customers which they just need to click in order to get everything running.
The question here is: How can we pin those shortcuts or batch files to the taskbar?
(The customers aren't supposed to access the file system and that's why they can only see the taskbar)
I'd like to be able to examine the contents of a JAR file without having to install Winzip or some other tool and without having to rename the file. Windows Explorer can open ZIP files just fine; is there some registry setting I can use to let it treat JARs like ZIPs?
Is there an option or tool that will allow me to change the default naming convention for files copied into the same directory in Windows (XP) and above.
e.g. from: Copy of {name}.{ext} to: {name}.{ext}.copy
Currently:
original_file.php
Copy of original_file.php
Desired:
original_file.php
original_file.php.copy
This would make finding/working with duplicated files much easier (they auto-sort together) and the filetype (by extension) changes thus it can't accidentally "break" something (e.g. if it were a *.java file, upon compiling I would get errors)
There is the Snap feature in Windows 7. But it seems to not work when dragging window to the edge that are adjoin to the second monitor. How to make it working? May be some regedit cheat or something?
Can i increase the sound volume in my computer beyond the volume control without additional hardware or speakers?
IN windows many Video files i feel sound is very low even after increasing volume to highest level?
Is there any software can increase volume level? I use Media Player classic (Because many video does not work on VLC) to see videos.
Has anyone successfully burned a selection of folders (I'm sure you must have!) to disk every certain amount of time (scheduled)? I'm looking for a solution where I could leave a blank disk in one of my computers every weekend and have a backup ready the next morning. And I'm running Windows 7 RC Build 7100 on this particular machine.
Thanks!

The Safely Remove Hardware icon in Windows 7 offers the ability to eject my SATA drives, including the boot drive. I don't see myself ever needing this - especially not from the convenience of the tray icon. Is there perhaps a common BIOS setting to disable hot-swappability?
I'm trying to convert my system to RAID 0 and so far I found contrasting opinions on the process. Somebody says Windows 7 can't boot from virtual volumes, somebody says it can.
My ideal setup would be two 500gb HD striped in RAID 0 with the OS and software installed on them.
Any thoughts?
I'd like to install windows 7 on it's own SSD drive (everything else would be on a standard hard disk) but I don't want to break the bank. I saw a 40GB one on newegg.com for $124.99 but i've heard that you get better performance with SSD drives if they have more free space on them.
Do you think a 40 GB would be large enough?
So, Microsoft added .NET support to Windows Server 2008 R2 Core, but which is the latest version that is supported? I know it has to be either .NET 3.5 or .NET 3.5 SP1, but which is it?
This is related to the question, "Can I monitor who is using my Mac OS X Internet Sharing?" but while that deals with Mac OS X, my questions is about Windows XP.
How do I find out who is sharing my internet connection on XP Pro?
Hello all.
I opened a file using Vim from MinGW's MSYS on Windows 7, and it crashed, and it's left behind a .filename.swp file which I cannot delete! I'm in the local admin group, and I tried following this, in an administrator command propmpt, and that didn't work. Nor did logging on as the local admin and performing the same actions. Any suggestions?
