  I am a senior & am a retired R.N., always good at math (50+ yrs ago, but still am). I have been in a computer users group since the mid 90's, & have become moderately advanced in using computers, including trouble-shooting other people's computer problems. Most of my expertise was gained by reading, asking questions, & trying my own trouble-shooting with the help of books & the internet. Now,I would like to take the next step and learn programming. What would be the best way for me to learn programming? Attending classes isn't a practical option, and I'm not in a position to spend much money. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.   I must write a multiplayer pong game for the school. Where are thousand of rooms and where two players can go in to a room and play together and collect points. I programmed the Pong game using Java (LibGDX). How can I do the Network part. I searched the web. And I came across Kryonet. Is there something better? What should I google. On the Internet there are a lot of those questions. And no good answers. I hope that this most questions can be answered. If someone has actual Open Source network game links, tutorials, books, network tutorial, etc. All this would help everyone. Thank you.

• Wordpress does not create directories?

  First I will just tell you how my wordpress hierarchy looks like: /var/www has all of the wordpress files, which is different from how it is normally set up as /var/www/wordpress (symlinked to /usr/share/wordpress). So var/www contains all of the files that /usr/share/wordpress would have, and /usr/share/wordpress is symlinked to /var/www, with an extra /var/www/wordpress symlinked to /var/www to prevent possible compatibility issues. When uploading a file like a favicon or a .zip-ped theme, everything works fine, and when checking if the theme/favicon is uploaded, wordpress shows that it is, and points to a directory that it thinks that it had created, like http:/localhost/wp-content/uploads/2012/..., which it had not, because the uploads folder is empty! And so there is a broken link on the internet and the theme is displayed but it has just plain text (because it had reverted to a plain theme I think) Please help! I am sorry for such a long post but this is really quite a troublesome problem. I have chowned /var/www and /usr/share/wordpress to www-data.

• Can't boot to Ubuntu 11.10 after installation with Windows 7

  I just installed Ubuntu 11.10 on a machine with Windows 7 already installed. I want to setup the dualboot environment. I have a block of unallocated disk space at the end of the disk (some blog post suggested to do so). Then I started installing Ubuntu 11.10 on that part of disk. I installed the boot loader to /boot partition and the installation finished successfully. However, after installation, Ubuntu 11.10 doesn't show up on boot menu. Then I searched on Internet and I used EasyBCD to add a grub2 boot to boot menu. After this, the boot entry does show up in the boot menu, however it only boot into some sort of grub console. I tried many times, and it doesn't work. It looks like the boot loader is not properly installed? I only have one 1.5TB disk and the first 800GB is NTFS partition with Windows 7. Does this work?

• 3G dongle and memory card detection

  My questions is about 3G dongle (Huawei E1752) that I use for my internet on Ubuntu 12.04. The big issue is that ubuntu only recognise the dongle if I plug it in before booting up. But if somehow I loses connection (due to network being low) then the only way to use the 3G dongle again is to reboot my machine, which becomes a pain. I have the same issue with the memory card reader of my laptop whereby it only reads when I insert the card before booting up. My laptop is an Acer V3 -571g. At first I thought it was an issue that the model was quite new, but I have been updating my ubuntu for a while, and this issue has kept being the same

  I want to install gcc compiler 4.7 to use c++11 features. I have looked on the internet for instructions, and I found in several websites these steps: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:Ubuntu-toolchain-r/test sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install gcc-4.7 g++-4.7 The problem is that my console freezes when adding the ppa. At first I thought it was due to having an old Ubuntu version (11.04). So I have upgraded to 11.10 and then 12.04, and everything seems to work OK. But still having the same problem. Any help?

  I have Pentium 4 system 3 GHz, 1 GB RAM ..... (no built-in WiFi) I installed Ubuntu 12.10 on my PC, works fine. It picked all the drivers for audio, video itself. I plugged TP-Link 54Mbps High Gain Wireless USB Adapter (TL-WN422G) ..... (link for the device: http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/?model=TL-WN422G) Now what happens is that the WiFi network is detected and shown in the "Network Connections", and it is also connected to it but when I open Firefox it is as if there no internet connection at all.

• Dell Vostro 1510 can't connect to wireless--how can I fix this?

  I'm having some trouble with my Dell Vostro 1510. I installed wubi on it two days ago and I've only been able to use the Internet with an ethernet cable. The network seems to definitely recognize that the wireless--even other peoples' wireless--is there, but it can't manage to get on. I'll post the lpsci here, so that you can see the Broadcom card I'm working with.   Hi I've spent hours trying all the suggestions listed on Forums on this problem all over the internet and I still can't get my wireless working. It's very discouraging because it might force me to go back to Windows which I hate. Can someone help? Perhaps I can give you some information to help identify what the issue is? b43 isn't coming up in my list of drivers...just Broadcom STA which doesn't work.   So I have been using Linux(especially, ubuntu) and windows(windows 7) for a long time . But i dont have a MAC, neither do i have an iphone. I do not actually want to buy them either . So the problem here is :how do i publish my app from windows or linux ? Kindly do understand i am not speaking about jailbroken programs(for jail broken i phones), i do not have any one near me who will lend me a MAC to publish my app . I started learning objective C some time ago. However, whenever i search the internet i get this information that there is no full proof way of publishing an app from windows or Linux . I also do intend to make it a paid app, meaning i dont wanna make it free. It will be very helpful if someone can suggest a way to overcome this problem .

• Installed Ubuntu using WUBI due to lack of CD Drive

  I have installed 12.04 via WUBI because my computer does not have a CD Drive. Is there any way that I can delete Windows 7 from my computer and use the whole HD for Ubuntu? I ask this question because for one reason or another I cannot boot from a boot-able USB stick (either in Windows or Ubuntu, however the USB port works because I am able to use my cell phone's tethering plan using all the USB ports to connect to the Internet). Edit: Just found out the problem. Eee PC Model 1018p's do not boot from any format other than FAT and FAT16 and not FAT32.

• How can i get ubuntu to run smoother?

  I am relatively new to ubuntu [I've used it before and loved it but one day i just randomly couldn't connect to the internet anymore so i switched back to windows... also netflix doesn't work in ubuntu...] and I've noticed that when i used it before everything ran very smoothly and the window animations and stuff like that were just beautiful. now though, everything is choppy and just ugly really. I wanna say its because i was using an older kernel but i really don't know. Anyway, i guess my point is, How can i get it to look pretty again? i really do wish i could be more descriptive but... yeah... I'm on Maverick btw. if anymore information is required i will happily oblige, just let me know.

  I've used Ubuntu for almost a year and I pretty much don't like the Unity environment and I installed BackTrack R3 in my laptop which uses GNOME 2.32 and I'm much impressed with that and made a decision to move to GNOME but, it is currently in version 3.x and it has been said that there is no GNOME 2.x versions are supported. I don't like the new GNOME and surfed the internet for finding a distro with that version and support. But, I can't find one. Can you specify a good distro with GNOME 2.x and Debian package installers?

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.04. I found out that there is a near-obsolete program based on the obsolete Caml Special Light by someone at INRIA ( ftp.inria.fr, directory lang/caml-light ). The program is called Syngen. I need it to create Syntax diagrams. But i am not able to run the binaries that come with it, and i'm not able to compile the source because it needs a compiler called cmlc. Somebody help, i find REALLY less documentation about this in internet.

  I saw a pop up which said 'updates are available' so I clicked it. I completely forgot that the installation was incomplete, I logged off. NOw when I came back, it told me to do a partial update. I read the internet for information, partial update wasn't the safest thing for me. I tried to log in to skype, it said another skype may exist. That wasn't true, Skype wasn't opened. I'm not sure if it's because of the incomplete update, but I'm quite off, in trouble. Please reply. Thank you Regards Junior

  I have a PC with 512MB of RAM, an Intel Pentium 4 processor(2GHz), SiS 651 video card(32MB) and a SiS C-Media AC'97 sound controller. I know that my video card is not and will not be supported for Linux. But I wonder if my PC is able to install and start Ubuntu, not just 10.04 LTS, because I'm willing to download 12.04 LTS when it's released. Will unity work? • Is it normal to sometimes take a while to get even basic things working in software development?

  This is a little hard to explain because it's a really generic question, but bear with me... I find that when I am doing or recreating basic things from scratch (i.e. without the help of libraries), sometimes it feels as though I'm taking much more time to do the task than is actually needed. I am not new to programming or development & design concepts and have worked extensively with around 9 languages and various platforms and paradigms over 5/6 years. Although I don't yet have any academic qualification for programming and have learned almost exclusively from the Internet, I have been told that the quality of my code is excellent by those with qualifications. So, I don't think I'm a bad programmer because I really love doing it and working with software architecture, but maybe I'm slow? Or is it normal to take sometimes longer than it seems necessary to do basic tasks?
