Fn + F6 - backlight turns off immediately, image stays (visible if shine something at the display)
xset dpms force {off, suspend, standby} - backlight turns off slowly, image cleared.
How to programmatically just turn off backlight on Acer Extensa 5220 laptop in Linux? It should work fast and should not touch image (unlike xset method).
Ideally if I could rapidly switching backlight off and on emulate lower_than_minimum brightness level (ideally - to be hardly visible (but visible) at night).
I am using Windows 7 and Ubuntu on the same machine.
Earlier I had 3 GB of RAM,but now the Windows is displaying just 1 GB of RAM.
Please also find the output of the free command in my Ubuntu :
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 1008208 904808 103400 5736 13516 239596
-/+ buffers/cache: 651696 356512
Swap: 3127292 10252 3117040
Has the swap memory consumed my 2 GB of RAM? Will I be able to use the whole of 3GB of the RAM in my Windows?
Regards,
Prateek
Update :
I tried to run the lshw command and I got the following output :

Why it is able to detect the vendor/product name of the bank-1 RAM, why can't it detect the RAM size and other details ? Has my RAM got faulty?
I've been offered to buy a used ASUS EAH4670/DI/1GD3 graphics card.
I went price-scouting to see if the offer I was given was fair, and I found out that there's a similar card, labelled ASUS EAH4670/DI/1GD3 V2.
Question is; What's the difference? What's with the V2? What does it mean? Is it just a BIOS upgrade that I can do myself? Updated driver-software which I can download myself? Or is the card actually a better version--faster, more reliable (physical changes to the print), etc.?
Using Powerpoint viewer (2010), I want to show a Powerpoint show on my secondary display, i.e. the projector, not on my laptop screen. However, Powerpoint viewer always does full screen presentations on the primary display, even if I move the Powerpoint viewer program to the secondary display.
Powerpoint and multiple monitors shows how to configure which display a Powerpoint presentation is shown on for the full version of Powerpoint. But how do I do this for Powerpoint viewer?
One workaround is to clone monitors rather than having separate monitors displaying different things, but I'm still wondering if there's a better way.
I'm in need of an application that can manage multiple Internet Explorer instances (to be precise nomerge sessions) like you can in Remote Desktop Manager with RDPs.
This app should host them in single window and arrange IE instances e.g. in tabs or lists.
OK, in Remote Desktop Manager you can create Web session, but in embedded mode you cannot set the nomerge option - all windows and tabs share the same session.
I've been searching the web, but with no results. So I put this question whether anyone know of such application or any workaround. Or I have to write my own app?
I want to set up automated backups that are kept safe from myself (in case a virus pwns me). The problem is the "create" and "delete" permissions are the same thing: write permission. So what can I do about it? Is it possible to decouple the create/delete permissions?
Another option could be to let the user "root" make the backups. The problem is my home directory is encrypted, and I don't want to backup everything.
Any ideas?
For the backups I'm using Deja Dup, which is installed by default in Fedora and Ubuntu.
Here at our business we have a Netgear R7000 running DD-WRT. I have been slowly adding IP cameras which I run using Blue Iris software.
The last camera I bought (which is NOT a wireless camera), when I plug it into the network I start having really bad connection issues on the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. The 5GHz works fine, just the 2.4GHz all of the sudden has trouble connecting, as if it's conflicting. I've tried playing with the camera settings, different IP addresses, HTTP ports, etc, and discovered it to be a conflict with multicast.
When multicast is checked, the Wi-Fi has issues but my video streams via Blue Iris. When unchecked, Wi-Fi works fine but the video won't stream through Blue Iris. The problem is there are no settings in the camera to change the RTSP port, which is set to 34567.
Does anyone know something that could fix this issue? It all seems very strange to me but maybe someone has an idea?
Essential info: I have a file "DB_OUTPUT.TXT" with 304 lines that I need to turn into 304 files (one per line). Each line contains many special characters and may be up to tens of thousands of characters long. For these reasons, I'm having difficulty using a cmd.exe batch file (which limits the amount of input) and the echo command (which would try to execute each special character, short of me having to escape them all).
I also have a file "DB_OUTPUT_FILENAMES.TXT" containing a distinct filename for each line-soon-to-be-file from "db_output.txt". So line 1 of DB_OUTPUT.TXT needs to be the body of a new file with a name equal to line 1 of DB_OUTPUT_FILENAMES.TXT.
Extra info: As you may have guessed, DB_OUTPUT.TXT is output from a database; it contains 304 records with 6 or 7 columns at a fixed width with the last column being a SQL query. Each of these lines (db records) will be used as a script to create new database objects, which is why the special characters need to be preserved.
Question: Is there a way to do this in a batch-like fashion? I'd be happy with either a Windows solution or a Linux one.
I am using Red Hat Linux 6.0 ... using davinchi board. I have to change system clock resolution so I am changing (HZ) env var. For this I have written script so that I can change HZ = 1000 n insert that script in /etc/profile.d and write code for loop in /etc/profile so that while running as usual /etc/profile can load the scripts present in /etc/profile.d. But when I am logging into the system at root level then showing error as "-bash: ./etc/profile.d/resolution.sh(my script name): No such file or directory
Also here why it is showing ./etc and not /etc . Is something related to that??
Also I tried to add script in /etc/init.d but still no change in value of HZ takes place. Please tell where to change so that this env var can get changed.
The script(resolution.sh) written has :-
#!/bin/bash
export HZ=1000
The content of /etc/profile which I entered is:
if [ -d /etc/profile.d ]; then
for i in /etc/profile.d/*.sh; do
if [ -r $i ]; then
.$i
fi
done
unset i
fi
And the output of grep command is
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 535 Feb 4 2004 profile
-rwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Feb 2 2004 profile.d
I could be wrong, but I'm yet to hear a valid argument for the exploitability that these things deliver...outweighing their very dubious / debatable functionality. They seem to me to be marginally handy, but I don't think I have any need for them. I do have a need for security, however.
How can I delete their entire functionality permanently from my hard drive, please? Microsoft only has pages on how to create them; which seems almost peculiar to the point of being dubious (at least, to me...)
And just a dumb command line question, am I correct in assuming fsutil hardlink list c: will enumerate every single hardlink on that drive?
C:\Windows\system32>fsutil hardlink list c:
\Windows\System32
Also, how do I delete symbolic links please ;)
But I'd just rather have all symbolic linking and recursion-creating stuff removed, if that's possible?

Local to local symbolic links are enabled.
Local to remote symbolic links are enabled.
Remote to local symbolic links are disabled.

In an attempt of blocking a viral service on my system (which was restarting my system automatically for every 30 seconds), I disabled all the services, and later enabled trustworthy services only.
(note: Hide all microsoft services didn't work blocking the auto restart so I disabled all services)
Now I have been succeeded in blocking automatic restart and I am able to access internet and all other necessary stuffs. Well, however system audio is mute(definitely because a necessary service is not running). Now I need a list of services that need to be started (set automatic) on windows 7.
Hi I have HP pivilion dv2-1117e entertainment nootbook.I have installed window XP but I don't have the vedio, audio,WLAN drivers Pleas help me and if possible informe me on "[email protected]"
I shell be very thankful to you forever.
I'm looking for a free online web page screenshot generator that will take photos of Mac browsers.
I've looked at:
BrowsrCamps
BrowserShots
LitmusApp
All of which I'm sure are good but charge for a screenshot of your web app using a Mac browser.
Does anyone know of a free alternative.
Of all the freeware backup programs i've checked out, the most frequent backup i could do automatically was every hour :(
Is there any freeware out there that can backup my data every minute or so? :) I'm talking about a few mega bytes of VERY important data... Preferably over the LAN backup too :)
I'm not a Windows SuperUser, but neither just the regular user. I don't mind browsing the Registry, using Process Explorer, reading the Event logs, (un)installing new drivers and so on, but all this only makes me solve some problems.
I tend though to run into problems where these tools aren't enough. Which tools should I learn about to improve my troubleshooting skills in Windows?
Currently I'm using Windows Vista x64 (not moved to 7 yet), facing audio/video stuttering problems and I think this is a good place to improve my troubleshooting skills.
I know this post is similar to this question, but my machine is only hanging occationally.
Specs:
Intel Q6600 Stock speed
ASUS P5QD Turbo

NVIDIA GTS-8800 640

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and Firefox 3.6.3. If I type wrong URL like youtube, it won't redirect me to the correct site. Instead the address would be jar:file:///usr/lib/firefox-3.6.3/chrome/en-US.jar!/locale/browser-region/region.propertiesyoutube and Firefox can't find any page.
I have some data in an excel file from which I have to generate a report. I repeat this task fairly regularly and am looking to automate it. I have a LaTeX project into which I usually just copy data by hand, export the necessary worksheets as pdfs and add them to my LaTeX project and compile with pdflatex.
It has occured to me that there must be a way to automate this process. Is there an efficient way to export the data from excel and into a LaTeX project, possibly a vba script in excel could run the process? Also, it doesn't have to be LaTeX, I'm not all that experienced with MS office's more advanced features is there some way akin to a mail merge that I could achieve this with? In some ways this might be better in case I have to pass the work on to someone who doesn't know LaTeX.
Thanks.
My company uses Exchange 2007 for our mail server (via 3rd party hosted service), I use OS X Mail.app on my MacBook Pro.
When viewing my junk folder in the webmail interface, there's a "Not Junk" button which will move the email out of the Junk folder. I can mimic the basic functionality in Mail.app by dragging the message from the junk folder to another folder.
But... does this train the server?
Specific questions:
Does pressing the "Not Junk" button in the webmail interface (or Outlook) do anything more on the server side? Does Exchange used any sort of statistical spam filtering (e.g. bayesian filtering) based on this action?
If the answer to #1 is yes, does moving the folder out of the junk folder in Mail.app trigger the statistical learning?
If the answer to #2 is no, is there a different way to trigger the learning?
I've came across RAID products that also list JBOD (just a bunch of disks) mode and 2LUN mode. What the heck is 2LUN mode?
I could not find a description; the closest thing seems to be LUN 'logical unit number' but I don't get the 2LUN thing.
UPDATE 1
This is what Wikipedia has to say about JBOD:
JBOD (derived from "just a bunch of disks"): an architecture involving
multiple hard drives, while making them accessible either as
independent hard drives, or as a combined (spanned) single logical
volume with no actual RAID functionality.
So JBOD can actually mean two different (albeit related) things.
Answer of Guest says 2LUN means no spanning.
Does this suggest that 2LUN would simply mean the JBOD-variant with no span?
I am running Emacs 24, and due to a separate issue, my input method displays input candidates in the minibuffer regardless of how I set its options. That would not be such a problem if the minibuffer did not resize from height 2 (when displaying candidates) to height 1 (when not), repeatedly, as I scroll through candidates--it's really jarring.
I looked through the documentation online and searched the configuration pages, but I couldn't find a setting for this. Is it possible?
I have a batch file that copies files to a network location on WebDAV. The address looks something like this: \\xxxxxxxxx.net@SSL@2078\DavWWWRoot
When I restart my computer, the batch file doesn't work and says "Access denied". Before a restart, it works, but it doesn't after the computer restarts. The problem is that it requires me to put in the username and password used to access the server. I have to browse to the server in File Explorer and sign in first. Even if I select the "Remember password" check box, it doesn't work.
How can I get it to automatically sign in? I don't want to have to do this every time.
