  • dealloc properties with assign and readwrite objective-c

    - by okami
    I have this structure: @interface MyList : NSObject { NSString* operation; NSString* link; } @property (readwrite) NSString* operation; @property (readwrite, assign) NSString* link; @end @implementation MyList @synthesize operation,link; @end I know that if I had retain instead of readwrite I should release the operation and link properties. BUT should I release the operation and link with the code above?

  • Large tables of static data with DBGhost

    - by Paulo Manuel Santos
    We are thinking of restructuring our database development and deployment processes by using DBGhost, we want to move away from the central development database and bring the database to the source control. One of the problems we have is a big table with static data (containing translated language strings), it has close to 200K rows. I know that our best solution is to move these stings into resource files, but until we implement that, will DbGhost be able to maintain all this static data and generate our development and deployment databases in a short time? And if not is there a good alternative to filling up this table whenever we need to?

  • Is there performance to be gained by moving storage allocation local to a member function to its cla

    - by neuviemeporte
    Suppose I have the following C++ class: class Foo { double bar(double sth); }; double Foo::bar(double sth) { double a,b,c,d,e,f a = b = c = d = e = f = 0; /* do stuff with a..f and sth */ } The function bar() will be called millions of times in a loop. Obviously, each time it's called, the variables a..f have to be allocated. Will I gain any performance by making the variables a..f members of the Foo class and just initializing them at the function's point of entry? On the other hand, the values of a..f will be dereferenced through this-, so I'm wondering if it isn't actually a possible performance degradation. Is there any overhead to accessing a value through a pointer? Thanks!

  • Send through Email, or store in database?

    - by user156814
    I have wondered when it is best to send an email, and when its best to store data in a database/log file. Everytime a user wants to contact me or inform me of soething, I suppose an email is best.. but is an email always preferred over other ways, and in what cases. Possible reasons for being contacted I can think of are questions, suggestions, feedback, reporting abuse, advertising, etc... I assume email, "why add unnecessary things to the DB?", but I figure data in DB would be a lot easier to manage. Whats the better/best way to be informed of things like this.. What is the best way for you (webmaster) to be informed of something by users? through email, or some other way

  • Access Codeigniter database functions from file

    - by Manny Calavera
    Hello. I am using a SWFupload script and I can't make a request from flash with mod_rewrite, I don't know why... I just need to point the Flash request to that file directly. This file runs an upload script that works ok but now I need to save some info to the database and I would like to know what should I write to have access from that file that is not called from the controller and does not extend the model in order to run a mysql query. Thanks.

  • INET_ATON() and INET_NTOA() in PHP?

    - by blerh
    I want to store IP addresses in my database, but I also need to use them throughout my application. I read about using INET_ATON() and INET_NTOA() in my MySQL queries to get a 32-bit unsigned integer out of an IP address, which is exactly what I want as it will make searching through the database faster than using char(15). The thing is, I can't find a function that does the same sort of thing in PHP. The only thing I came across is: http://php.net/manual/en/function.ip2long.php So I tested it: $ip = $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']; echo ip2long($ip); And it outputs nothing. In the example they gave it seems to work, but then again I'm not exactly sure if ip2long() does the same thing as INET_ATON(). Does someone know a PHP function that will do this? Or even a completely new solution to storing an IP address in a database? Thanks.

  • Exemple where TYPE_ALIGNMENT() fails

    - by JustMaximumPower
    Hi, I have a question relating to alignment in c/c++. In http://stackoverflow.com/questions/364483/determining-the-alignment-of-c-c-structures-in-relation-to-its-members Michael Burr posted this Makro: #define TYPE_ALIGNMENT( t ) offsetof( struct { char x; t test; }, test ) in the comments someone wrote this might fail with non POD typs. Can someone give me an code example where this fails?

  • Retain cycle on `self` with blocks

    - by Jonathan Sterling
    I'm afraid this question is pretty basic, but I think it's relevant to a lot of Objective-C programmers who are getting into blocks. What I've heard is that since blocks capture local variables referenced within them as const copies, using self within a block can result in a retain cycle, should that block be copied. So, we are supposed to use __block to force the block to deal directly with self instead of having it copied. __block typeof(self) bself = self; [someObject messageWithBlock:^{ [bself doSomething]; }]; instead of just [someObject messageWithBlock:^{ [self doSomething]; }]; What I'd like to know is the following: if this is true, is there a way that I can avoid the ugliness (aside from using GC)?

  • selecting a range of verses from a database

    - by Noam Smadja
    i have a database, with verses from the bible, with those fields: book (book number), chapter (chapter number), verse (verse number), text (the verse) example: 1 1 1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. first 1 is for Genesis, second 1 is for chapter 1, third 1 is for verse 1 user gives me something like 1 1:1 - 1 1:4 which means he wants to show Genesis 1:1-4. what i want to do is something like SELECT book*100000+chapter*1000+verse AS index FROM bible WHERE index >= 1001001 AND index <=1001004 or WHERE book*100000+chapter*1000+verse >= 1001001 AND book*100000+chapter*1000+verse <= 1001004

  • Objective-c garbage collection

    - by Chris
    If garbage collection is not required: - (void) awakeFromNib{ //Create the NSStatusBar and set its length statusItem = [[[NSStatusBar systemStatusBar] statusItemWithLength:NSSquareStatusItemLength] retain]; ... Do I have to release that? And if I do, would that be in a finalize method or dealloc method? If garbage collection is required, then is the retain call above ignored automatically?

  • UIVIewController not released when view is dismissed

    - by Nelson Ko
    I have a main view, mainWindow, which presents a couple of buttons. Both buttons create a new UIViewController (mapViewController), but one will start a game and the other will resume it. Both buttons are linked via StoryBoard to the same View. They are segued to modal views as I'm not using the NavigationController. So in a typical game, if a person starts a game, but then goes back to the main menu, he triggers: [self dismissViewControllerAnimated:YES completion:nil ]; to return to the main menu. I would assume the view controller is released at this point. The user resumes the game with the second button by opening another instance of mapViewController. What is happening, tho, is some touch events will trigger methods on the original instance (and write status updates to them - therefore invisible to the current view). When I put a breakpoint in the mapViewController code, I can see the instance will be one or the other (one of which should be released). I have tried putting a delegate to the mainWindow clearing the view: [self.delegate clearMapView]; where in the mainWindow - (void) clearMapView{ gameWindow = nil; } I have also tried self.view=nil; in the mapViewController. The mapViewController code contains MVC code, where the model is static. I wonder if this may prevent ARC from releasing the view. The model.m contains: static CanShieldModel *sharedInstance; + (CanShieldModel *) sharedModel { @synchronized(self) { if (!sharedInstance) sharedInstance = [[CanShieldModel alloc] init]; return sharedInstance; } return sharedInstance; } Another post which may have a lead, but so far not successful, is UIViewController not being released when popped I have in ViewDidLoad: // checks to see if app goes inactive - saves. [[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self selector:@selector(resignActive) name:UIApplicationWillResignActiveNotification object:nil]; with the corresponding in ViewDidUnload: [[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] removeObserver:self name:UIApplicationWillResignActiveNotification object:nil]; Does anyone have any suggestions? EDIT: - (void) prepareForSegue:(UIStoryboardSegue *)segue sender:(id)sender{ NSString *identifier = segue.identifier; if ([identifier isEqualToString: @"Start Game"]){ gameWindow = (ViewController *)[segue destinationViewController]; gameWindow.newgame=-1; gameWindow.delegate = self; } else if ([identifier isEqualToString: @"Resume Game"]){ gameWindow = (ViewController *)[segue destinationViewController]; gameWindow.newgame=0; gameWindow.delegate = self;

  • How to solve the leaks when allocating the NSMutableArray in Objective-C

    - by Madan Mohan
    Hi Guys, I am getting leaks in Master view controller of iPhone. When I call this method, I am inserting them into filteredListCount array, because when I search I need to show the list from filteredListCount array otherwise customerArray. This functionality is working fine but I am getting leaks in the method below at allocation: filteredListCount = [[NSMutableArray alloc] initWithCapacity: [customerArray count]]; This is the first view controller of my application, I am showing the list and I am also allowing to search from a list. - (void)parser:(CustomerListLibXmlParser *)parser addCustomerObject:(Customer *)customerObj1 { [UIApplication sharedApplication].networkActivityIndicatorVisible = YES; [customerArray addObject:customerObj1]; filteredListCount = [[NSMutableArray alloc] initWithCapacity: [customerArray count]]; [filteredListCount addObjectsFromArray: customerArray]; [theTableView reloadData]; } - (void)parser:(CustomerListLibXmlParser *)parser encounteredError:(NSError *)error { } - (void)parserFinished:(CustomerListLibXmlParser *)parser { [UIApplication sharedApplication].networkActivityIndicatorVisible = NO; self.title=@"Customers"; }

  • App crashes every second time a tableview row is selected in navigation controller setup

    - by Thaurin
    Disclaimer first: I'm pretty new to Objective-C and the retain model. I've been developing in a garbage collected .NET environment for the last five years, so I've been spoiled. I'm still learning. I'm having my iPhone app crash with EXC_BAD_ACCESS. It happens in a navigtation controller/tableview setup. When I select a row the first time, no problems. It switches in the child controller without problems. I go back and select the same row again. Program then proceeds to crash. Every other row works fine, but every second time a row is accessed, it's a crash. I've pinpointed the location where this happens. The child controller (which is a class that I reuse for every row of the same type) that's being switched into has an array of NSString's representing the rows that will be displayed. I set it before pushing the child viewcontroller. It's there where this apparently happens. I'm having a hard time debugging this problem, still wrestling with xcode and all. I fear there may be some vital information missing here, but maybe there is something you recognize here.

  • Returning a local object from a function

    - by pocoa
    Is this the right way to return an object from a function? Car getCar(string model, int year) { Car c(model, year); return c; } void displayCar(Car &car) { cout << car.getModel() << ", " << car.getYear() << endl; } displayCar(getCar("Honda", 1999)); I'm getting an error, "taking address of temporary". Should I use this way: Car &getCar(string model, int year) { Car c(model, year); return c; }

  • Using CreateFileMapping between to programs - C

    - by Jamie Keeling
    Hello, I have two window form applications written in C, one holds a struct consisting of two integers, another will receive it using the CreateFileMapping. Although not directly related I want to have three events in place so each of the processes can "speak" to each other, one saying that the first program has something to pass to the second, one saying the first one has closed and another saying the second one has closed. What would be the best way about doing this exactly? I've looked at the MSDN entry for the CreateFileMapping operation but I'm still not sure as to how it should be done. I didn't want to start implementing it without having some sort of clear idea as to what I need to do. Thanks for your time.

  • Can't process UIImage from UIImagePickerController and app crashes..

    - by eimaikala
    Hello guys, I am new to iPhone sdk and can't figure out why my application crashes. In the .h I have: UIImage *myimage; //so as it can be used as global -(IBAction) save; @property (nonatomic, retain) UIImage *myimage; In the .m I have: @synthesize myimage; - (void)viewDidLoad { self.imgPicker = [[UIImagePickerController alloc] init]; self.imgPicker.allowsImageEditing = YES; self.imgPicker.delegate = self; self.imgPicker.sourceType = UIImagePickerControllerSourceTypePhotoLibrary; } -(void)imagePickerController:(UIImagePickerController *)picker didFinishPickingMediaWithInfo:(NSDictionary *)info { myimage = [[info objectForKey:UIImagePickerControllerOriginalImage]retain]; [picker dismissModalViewControllerAnimated:YES]; } -(IBAction) process{ myimage=[self process:myimage var2:Val2 var3:Val3 var4:Val4]; UIImageWriteToSavedPhotosAlbum(myimage, nil, nil, nil); [myimage release]; } When the button process is clicked, the application crashes and really I have no idea why this happens. When i change it to: -(IBAction) process{ myimage =[UIImage imageNamed:@"im1.jpg"]; myimage=[self process:myimage var2:Val2 var3:Val3 var4:Val4]; UIImageWriteToSavedPhotosAlbum(myimage, nil, nil, nil); [myimage release]; } the process button works perfectly... Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

  • Hybrid Columnar Compression

    - by user12620172
    You heard me in the past talk about the HCC feature for Oracle databases. Hybrid Columnar Compression is a fantastic, built-in, free feature of Oracle 11Gr2. One used to need an Exadata to make use of it. However, last October, Oracle opened it up and now allows it to work on ANY Oracle DB server running 11Gr2, as long as the storage behind it is a ZFSSA for DNFS, or an Axiom for FC. If you're not sure why this is so cool or what HCC can do for your Oracle database, please check out this presentation. In it, Art will explain HCC, show you what it does, and give you a great idea why it's such a game-changer for those holding lots of historical DB data. Did I mention it's free? • Removing DOM event handlers in long-running browser session

    - by Chris Beck
    I have a browser interface with a ul#contacts list on the left and div#contact property panel (email, phone) on the right. Click a contact in the list and my app makes an XHR request to get the contact property HTML fragment and update div#contact.innerHTML. Each contact fragment has an "Edit Contact" link. With JS, I progressively upgrade that link with an event listener that performs an XHR request to replace the static property panel with an in-place edit form. This can happen many times during a single browser session. How should I clean up my "Edit Contact" event listener? Do I need to remove it manually before the form overwrites the property panel? Or is the event listener cleaned up automatically when the contents of div#contact (and the node that I'm listening on) is overwritten? FWIW, I still consider IE6 to be part of my target market.

  • Problem saving Text file in database using Hibernate

    - by Marquinio
    I'm having a problem saving large text files to MySQL database. If the text file size is around 5KB it successfully saves. If file is 148KB then I get this error from Hibernate: org.hibernate.exception.DataException: Could not execute JDBC batch update These is the SQL shows by Hibernate: Hibernate: insert into file_table (ID,FILE) values (?, ?) And in my hibernate file I'm using java.sql.Blob to store the file. Anyone knows why it fails to save a file size of 148KB but if I open that same file, cut it down to around 5KB, it will successfully save it? I thought the default limit was I think 2GB? This is weird. Thanks.
