  • What would your three most-telling interview questions be for a new hire?

    - by Phil.Wheeler
I've been asked to interview my company's next junior developer candidate and I want to come up with a couple of questions that will challenge him / her. What are some of the best interview questions you asked a developer candidate that revealed the most about the person's character, ability or nature? These do not necessarily have to be technical questions, but I am after some insight into the person's ability to reason or think fast under pressure or when faced with an unusual problem.

  • I need to take the first three letters of a filename and set it into a text file, in a certain fashion. How can I do this?

    - by JuniorD
Okay, so I need to take the first three letters of a file from a list of files, and place this into a text file in a certain manner. I will provide examples below. Lets say that I have two file names in the same directory, one called cougar.txt and the other bear.txt. These are in the animals directory. I need to take the first three letters of these words, and transpose them into a text file along with the directory, in the following format: BEA = "animals/bear.txt" COU = "animals/cougar.txt" This should happen with any random thing that might be in the list. I'm fairly new to this sort of coding, so I'm not quite sure which language to use, and I'm learning as I go. This new challenge seems fairly daunting to me, and I would be much appreciated if you guys could help. Also, I'm using Windows 7. Been attempting at this all day, to no avail. Preferably done in batch, but if that is impossible I'm open to recommendations.

  • MySQL: selecting totals as three fields from same table as one query?

    - by coderama
    I have a table with various orders in it: ID | Date | etc... 1 | 2013-01-01 | etc 2 | 2013-02-01 | etc 3 | 2013-03-01 | etc 4 | 2013-04-01 | etc 5 | 2013-05-01 | etc 6 | 2013-06-01 | etc 7 | 2013-06-01 | etc 8 | 2013-03-01 | etc 9 | 2013-04-01 | etc 10 | 2013-05-01 | etc I want a query that ends wit the result: overallTotal | totalThisMonth | totalLastMonth 10 | 2 | 1 But I want to do this in one query! I am trying to find a way to use subqueries to do this. SO far I have: SELECT * from ( SELECT count(*) as overallTotal from ORDERS ) How can I combine this with other subqueries so I can get the totals in one query?

  • Working with three dimensional data in an HTML (ASP.NET) table.

    - by ProfK
I am working on the prototype for a scheduling application on an intranet system. The application is for scheduling and tracking promotional workers at various locations on various dates (hence location, date, workers dimensions). Currently, only for prototyping, I am generating a data table of location/date, and from this I iteratively build an HTML table (asp:Table control). On visiting each cell, I query for people working that location-date and populate the cell accordingly. This is very inefficiant, and will at worst be improved by querying cached data for the whole location/date grid. I'm looking around for established patterns and techniques for dealing with scenarios like this in HTML in general, maybe a visualisation library for jQuery or something, and for ASP.NET in particular, maybe a library for implementation on a GridView etc. Am I going in the right direction with this, and if so, what recomendations are there regarding the previous paragraph?

  • Need help with tweaking a Dropdown with three options, user selects one - a hidden div appears with correct fields

    - by Jack
Hello Again, I posted a question on here and got an answer within minutes I'm hoping the wizards on here can help me again. Okay so I'm using a script I found online to try and add this function to a shopping cart form. Here's the setup. I have a payment method dropdown with Visa, Mastercard and Bank Withdrawal as the options. For the credit cards I have one hidden div with a certain set of fields, and for the bank I have another hidden div. Each of the divs have named ID's - #payCredit and #payBank The css for both have margin: 0px and display: none; Here's a peice of javascript I used successfuly on a shipping address checkbox `function toggleLayer( whichLayer ) { var elem, vis; if( document.getElementById ) // this is the way the standards work elem = document.getElementById( whichLayer ); else if( document.all ) // this is the way old msie versions work elem = document.all[whichLayer]; else if( document.layers ) // this is the way nn4 works elem = document.layers[whichLayer]; vis = elem.style; // if the style.display value is blank we try to figure it out here if(vis.display==''&&elem.offsetWidth!=undefined&&elem.offsetHeight!=undefined) vis.display = (elem.offsetWidth!=0&&elem.offsetHeight!=0)?'block':'none'; vis.display = (vis.display==''||vis.display=='block')?'none':'block'; }` I was hoping I could change it slightly to meet my needs. Here's the dropdown <label>Payment Method:</label> <select name="payment" id="payment" class="dropdown3" style="width:8em"> <option selected="selected">Select</option> <option value="Visa" onclick="javascript:toggleLayer('payCredit');">Visa</option> <option value="MasterCard" onclick="javascript:toggleLayer('payCredit');">Mastercard</option> <option value="Direct" onclick="javascript:toggleLayer('payBank');">Direct Withdraw</option> </select></li> The current result is that it kinda works. I can open the dropdown and select Visa and it appears, if I select Visa again it disappears, if I select Visa and then select bank, both appear. You can see what i'm working on here - http://test.sharevetcare.com/bestfriends/cart3.html

  • Is MSDN referencing a system.thread, a worker thread, an io thread or all three?

    - by w0051977
Please see the warning below taken from the StreamWriter class specification (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.io.streamwriter.aspx): "Any public static (Shared in Visual Basic) members of this type are thread safe. Any instance members are not guaranteed to be thread safe." I understand that a W3WC process contains two thread pools i.e. worker threads and I/O threads. A worker thread could contain many threads of its own (if the application creates its own System.Thread instances). Does the warning only relate to System.Threads or does it relate to worker threads and I/O threads as well I.e. as the instance variables of the streamwriter class are not thread safe then does this mean that there would be problems if multiple worker threads access it eg if two users on two different web clients attempt to write to the log file at the same time, then could one lock out the other?

  • Is there any difference in the implementation of these three validation methods?

    - by dontWatchMyProfile
Core Data is calling these methods in certain situations: - (BOOL)validateForInsert:(NSError **)outError; - (BOOL)validateForUpdate:(NSError **)outError; - (BOOL)validateForDelete:(NSError **)outError; I wonder if they're doing anything different, or if they're essentially doing the exact same things. As far as I know, these methods call the -validateValue:forKey:error: method once for every property. The only difference I can imagine is in the .validateForDelete: method. I see no reason why to validate an object when it shall be deleted, except for applying delete rules, probably only in the case of the DENY rule.

  • How to allow three optional parameters in the URL by .htaccess?

    - by eij
I have http://example.com and a PHP routing class that checks if some URL exists. I want to make a new route, which is: http://example.com/foo/bar/123 but as long as I open it, the Apache redirects me to an error page. So I'm using a .htaccess. The code is: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^(.*) /index.php [L] and it works, as long as I use http://example.com/foo, but once I add some other parameters, it redirects me to an error. I'm guessing that the rewrite code is wrong. Is it wrong? If yes, could you suggest me the good one? If no, where the problem could be located?

  • Main purpose of this task is to calculate volumes and surface areas of three dimensional geometric shapes like, cylinders, cones.

    - by Csc_Girl_Geek
In Java Language Design your classes as below introducing: an Interface named “GeometricShapes” an abstract class named “ThreeDShapes” two child classes of ThreeDShapes: Cylinders and Cones. One test class names “TestShapes” Get the output for volumes and surface areas of cylinders and cones along with respective values of their appropriate input variables. Try to use toString() method and array. Your classes should be designed with methods that are required for Object-Oriented programming. So Far I Have: package Assignment2; public interface GeometricShapes { public void render(); public int[] getPosition(); public void setPosition(int x, int y); } package Assignment2; public abstract class ThreeDShapes implements GeometricShapes { public int[] position; public int[] size; public ThreeDShapes() { } public int[] getPosition() { return position; } public void setPosition(int x, int y) { position[0] = x; position[1] = y; } } package Assignment2; public class Cylinders extends ThreeDShapes { public Cylinder() { } public void render() { } } I don't think this is right and I do not know how to fix it. :( Please help.

  • List of all states from COMPOSITE_INSTANCE, CUBE_INSTANCE, DLV_MESSAGE tables

    - by Deepak Arora
In many of my engagements I get asked repeatedly about the states of the composites in 11g and how to decipher them, especially when we are troubleshooting issues around purging. I have compiled a list of all the states from the COMPOSITE_INSTANCE, CUBE_INSTANCE, DLV_MESSAGE and MEDIATOR_INSTANCE tables. These are the primary tables that are used when using BPEL composites and how they are used with the ECID.  Composite State Values COMPOSITE_INSTANCE States State Description 0 Running 1 Completed 2 Running with faults 3 Completed with faults 4 Running with recovery required 5 Completed with recovery required 6 Running with faults and recovery required 7 Completed with faults and recovery required 8 Running with suspended 9 Completed with suspended 10 Running with faults and suspended 11 Completed with faults and suspended 12 Running with recovery required and suspended 13 Completed with recovery required and suspended 14 Running with faults, recovery required, and suspended 15 Completed with faults, recovery required, and suspended 16 Running with terminated 17 Completed with terminated 18 Running with faults and terminated 19 Completed with faults and terminated 20 Running with recovery required and terminated 21 Completed with recovery required and terminated 22 Running with faults, recovery required, and terminated 23 Completed with faults, recovery required, and terminated 24 Running with suspended and terminated 25 Completed with suspended and terminated 26 Running with faulted, suspended, and terminated 27 Completed with faulted, suspended, and terminated 28 Running with recovery required, suspended, and terminated 29 Completed with recovery required, suspended, and terminated 30 Running with faulted, recovery required, suspended, and terminated 31 Completed with faulted, recovery required, suspended, and terminated 32 Unknown 64 - Normal 0 false false false EN-CA X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:11.0pt; font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-font-family:Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast; mso-hansi-font-family:Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;} Any value in the range of 32 to 63 indicates that the composite instance state has not been enabled, but the instance state is updated for faults, aborts, etc. CUBE_INSTANCE States State Description 0 STATE_INITIATED 1 STATE_OPEN_RUNNING 2 STATE_OPEN_SUSPENDED 3 STATE_OPEN_FAULTED 4 STATE_CLOSED_PENDING_CANCEL 5 STATE_CLOSED_COMPLETED 6 STATE_CLOSED_FAULTED 7 STATE_CLOSED_CANCELLED 8 STATE_CLOSED_ABORTED 9 STATE_CLOSED_STALE 10 STATE_CLOSED_ROLLED_BACK DLV_MESSAGE States State Description 0 STATE_UNRESOLVED 1 STATE_RESOLVED 2 STATE_HANDLED 3 STATE_CANCELLED 4 STATE_MAX_RECOVERED Since now in 11g the Invoke_Messages table is not there so to distinguish between a new message (Invoke) and callback (DLV) and there is DLV_TYPE column that defines the type of message: DLV_TYPE States State Description 1 Invoke Message 2 DLV Message MEDIATOR_INSTANCE STATE Description  0  No faults but there still might be running instances  1  At least one case is aborted by user  2  At least one case is faulted (non-recoverable)  3  At least one case is faulted and one case is aborted  4  At least one case is in recovery required state  5 At least one case is in recovery required state and at least one is aborted  6 At least one case is in recovery required state and at least one is faulted  7 At least one case is in recovery required state, one faulted and one aborted  >=8 and < 16  Running >= 16   Stale In my next blog posting I will walk through the lifecycle of a BPEL process using the above states for the following use cases: - New BPEL process - initial Receive activity - Callback BPEL process - mid-level Receive activity As always comments and questions welcome! • Automated git push attempt does not work - authentication issue

    - by at least three characters
I'm trying to automate a very periodic git add/commit/push cycle using a shell script and cron under OS X 10.8.5. The script is as basic as one would expect it to be: cd /my/directory git add . git commit -m "a commit message with the date" git push -u origin master I've tried running it both as root as well as a non-root user. When I do this manually, I get a dialog box from OS X requesting that I authenticate the operation. Running the script (either using cron or just using sh) ends up sending a message (via mail) to whichever user's cron executed the script saying that it was unable to write a file in the .git directory because of a permissions issue (which is most likely manual execution requires authentication). Is there any way to circumvent this issue, or give the script permission to perform this operation without having me intervene each time?

  • How to remove illegal characters from path and filenames?

    - by Gary Willoughby

I've used the below code but it doesn't seem to do anything, what am i missing? using System; using System.IO; namespace ConsoleApplication1 { class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { string illegal = "\"M<>\"\\a/ry/ h**ad:>> a\\/:*?\"<>| li*tt|le|| la\"mb.?"; illegal = illegal.Trim(Path.GetInvalidFileNameChars()); illegal = illegal.Trim(Path.GetInvalidPathChars()); Console.WriteLine(illegal); Console.ReadLine(); } } }

  • Remove characters after specific character in string, then remove substring?

    - by sah302
I feel kind of dumb posting this when this seems kind of simple and there are tons of questions on strings/characters/regex, but I couldn't find quite what I needed (except in another language: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2176544/remove-all-text-after-certain-point). I've got the following code: [Test] public void stringManipulation() { String filename = "testpage.aspx"; String currentFullUrl = "http://localhost:2000/somefolder/myrep/test.aspx?q=qvalue"; String fullUrlWithoutQueryString = currentFullUrl.Replace("?.*", ""); String urlWithoutPageName = fullUrlWithoutQueryString.Remove(fullUrlWithoutQueryString.Length - filename.Length); String expected = "http://localhost:2000/somefolder/myrep/"; String actual = urlWithoutPageName; Assert.AreEqual(expected, actual); } I tried the solution in the question above (hoping the syntax would be the same!) but nope. I want to first remove the queryString which could be any variable length, then remove the page name, which again could be any length. How can I get the remove the query string from the full URL such that this test passes?

  • How can I condense stand-alone characters in Perl?

    - by brydgesk
I'm trying to identify and condense single (uppercase) characters in a string. For example: "test A B test" - "test AB test" "test A B C test" - "test ABC test" "test A B test C D E test" - "test AB test CDE test" I have it working for single occurrences (as in the first above example), but cannot figure out how to chain it for multiple occurrences. $str =~ s/ ([A-Z]) ([A-Z]) / \1\2 /g; I'll probably feel stupid when I see the solution, but I'm prepared for that. Thanks in advance.

  • How to read special characters from stdin in Python?

    - by erickrf
I'm having trouble reading special characters from stdin. Here are my attempts: import os dir = raw_input("Dir name: ") Dir name: c:/á os.chdir(dir) WindowsError: [Error 2] The system cannot find the file specified: 'c:/\x81\xe1' Ok, so I tried to get the default system encoding and recode the string from stdin: import locale encoding = locale.getdefaultlocale()[1] print encoding cp1252 unicode(dir, encoding) Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> File "c:\Python26\lib\encodings\cp1252.py", line 15, in decode return codecs.charmap_decode(input,errors,decoding_table) UnicodeDecodeError: 'charmap' codec can't decode byte 0x81 in position 3: character maps to <undefined> Now, I don't know how to solve this. Nor can I understand - why is there a problem when I try to access a directory with a name written in the system default encoding itself??

  • [Ruby] Why do I have to URI.encode even safe characters for Net::HTTP requests?

    - by Matthias
I was trying to send a GET request to Twitter (user ID replaced for privacy reasons) using Net::HTTP: url = URI.parse("http://api.twitter.com/1/friends/ids.json?user_id=12345") resp = Net::HTTP.get_response(url) this throws an exception in Net::HTTP: NoMethodError: undefined method empty?' for #<URI::HTTP:0x59f5c04> from /System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/net/http.rb:1470:ininitialize' just by coincidence, I stumbled upon a similar code snippet, which used URI.encode prior to URI.parse, so I copied that and tried again: url = URI.parse(URI.encode("http://api.twitter.com/1/friends/ids.json?user_id=12345")) resp = Net::HTTP.get_response(url) now it works fine, but why? There are no reserved characters that need escaping in the URL I mentioned, so why do I have to call URI.encode for get_response to succeed?

  • How to use Unicode characters in a vim script?

    - by Thomas
I'm trying to get vim to display my tabs as ? so they cannot be mistaken for actual characters. I'd hoped the following would work: if has("multi_byte") set lcs=tab:? else set lcs=tab:>- endif However, this gives me E474: Invalid argument: lcs=tab:? The file is UTF-8 encoded and includes a BOM. Googling "vim encoding" or similar gives me many results about the encoding of edited files, but nothing about the encoding of executed scripts. How to get this character into my .vimrc so that it is properly displayed?

  • How to create a random string of characters in C#?

    - by Keltex
I'm trying to create random strings of characters. I'm wondering if there might be a more efficient way. Here's my algorithm: string RANDOM = "0123456789ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz#@$^*()"; StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder(); int length = rand.Next(10) + 1; for (int idx = 0; idx < length; ++idx) { sb.Append(RANDOM[rand.Next(RANDOM.Length)]); } string RandomString = sb.ToString(); I'm wondering if the StringBuilder is the best choice. Also if selecting a random character from my RANDOM string is the best way.

  • Characters in string changed after downloading HTML from the internet.

    - by Callum Rogers
Using the following code, I can download the HTML of a file from the internet: WebClient wc = new WebClient(); // .... string downloadedFile = wc.DownloadString("http://www.myurl.com/"); However, sometimes the file contains "interesting" characters like é to é, ? to ↠and ????? to フシギダãƒ. I think it may be something to do with different unicode types or something, as each character gets changed into 2 new ones, perhaps each character being split in half but I have very little knowledge in this area. What do you think is wrong?

  • How do I display a field's hidden characters in the result of a query in Oracle?

    - by Chris Williams
I have two rows that have a varchar column that are different according to a Java .equals(). I can't easily change or debug the Java code that's running against this particular database but I do have access to do queries directly against the database using SQLDeveloper. The fields look the same to me (they are street addresses with two lines separated by some new line or carriage feed/new line combo). Is there a way to see all of the hidden characters as the result of a query?I'd like to avoid having to use the ascii() function with substr() on each of the rows to figure out which hidden character is different. I'd also accept some query that shows me which character is the first difference between the two fields.

  • How to ensure that no non-ascii unicode characters are entered ?

    - by Jacques René Mesrine
Given a java.lang.String instance, I want to verify that it doesn't contain any unicode characters that are not ASCII alphanumerics. e.g. The string should be limited to [A-Za-z0-9.]. What I'm doing now is something very inefficient: import org.apache.commons.lang.CharUtils; String s = ...; char[] ch = s.toCharArray(); for( int i=0; i<ch.length; i++) { if( ! CharUtils.isAsciiAlphanumeric( ch[ i ] ) throw new InvalidInput( ch[i] + " is invalid" ); } Is there a better way to solve this ?
