I need to forbid all users except administrators to write into DVD/CD/USB drives on Windows XP. Googled around and there is a way to disable devices completely: Cdrom: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\cdrom\Start (from 1 to 4) Usb: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USBSTOR (from 3 to 4) but I need to disable them only for particular users.

  • Is there a real problem in this Retrospect duplicate of my hard drive?

    - by Xavierjazz
I recently duplicated my XP "C" drive, using Retrospect. When it finished, there were 6 errors. I checked the log and the 1st error referred to Microsoft Security Essentials\Support\Applications.etl: Appears incomplete. The other 5 errors referred to the Microsoft SQL Server.....\MSSQL\log_...trc: Appears incomplete. Is this a problem that can be solved by reinstalling Microsoft Security Essentials? Or wht else? Any help appreciated, Regards,

Opened (and not saving) a Powerpoint presentation attached to an online email message. Modified the document and clicked on the Save (not Save As) and now the presentation is nowhere to be found. How do I find this document? I have run a serious search on the C drive to no avail. It's not even in the Temporary Internet Files. • Sysinternal's Process Explorer v14 doesn't show network activity

    - by MikMik
The new version of Process Explorer shows network activity history, but it doesn't in one of my computers. This particular PC runs Windows XP SP3 and it has just been reformatted so everything is "fresh". I have even installed WinPCap and Microsoft Network monitor, in case some of these drivers were necessary, but the graph stays in 0. Any ideas why this could happen? I would ask in Sysinternal's forum, but I really don't want to register in yet another forum.

    - by jthomascarey
The default Windows Xp Start menu has been disabled by the system administrator where I work. When you right-click on the Start-menu, and select properties, the only option is the Classic Start-menu. I work in IT and have the complete freedom to change whatever I want, I just don't know how. How do I enable to option to select the default Start-Menu in XP?

  • "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading"

    - by andygeers
I've just taken over managing the network for a small charity, and am finding internet access very flaky - we keep getting "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading." errors (HTTP Error 12031 according to the Windows network diagnostic tool). It doesn't seem to be anything to do with our ISP since it also affects internal traffic (even requests to an Apache instance on my localhost!) Adjusting the MTU setting in the Windows XP registry sometimes seems to help for a few minutes after rebooting, but the problem always returns.

  • How do I make netdiag work?

    - by Mohamed Abobakr
I'm trying to run the netdiag command to troubleshoot the internet connection but when I run it in cmd I get the following message: 'netdiag' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Also, I have tried typing "net diag", which gives me a syntax error, but that NET command seems to be something completely different. Searching on google for answers gives me results that deal with Windows Server 2003; I'm on a Windows XP machine.

    - by greg88
When I record a movie in Windows Media Center, it records it again every time it shows up in the Guide listings again - days, weeks, or months later. The movies are not listed as a Series (Recorded TV - Schedules - Series). I found many matches for this problem on Google, and no solutions. Windows XP SP3 w/all current updates; MCE 2005 w/all current updates.

  • Windows: How to load and save sound schemes?

    - by Ashwin
Windows users can change the sounds associated with program events using the dialog in Control Panel - Sound and Audio Properties - Sounds. Different sounds (or no sound) can be assigned to program events and the sound scheme can be saved. Where and how does Windows store its sound schemes? How do I export or save this sound scheme and load it somewhere else? (I am using Windows XP.)
