  • Does the Frontier Kernel have a future?

    - by pbreitenbach
Whatever you think about Dave Winer, Frontier is an incredible piece of software. It includes quite a few advances that have yet to be surpassed: the object database, the database viewer, the scripting environment, the hierarchical-including website generation scheme, the elegant scripting language, the mixing of scripts and compilation, rapid prototyping, built in web server, simple debugger, cross-platform, simple UI, etc. My question: Dave turned Frontier over to open source and there is a Frontier Kernel project. However it is fairly quiet. Does Frontier have a future from here?

  • Uploading youtube videos through a common account

    - by Dave
Is it possible to have users of my site upload videos from their home computers onto MY youtube account? What does that involve and can someone point me to some relevant examples. I DONT want to host the videos myself, even temporarily, unless completely unavoidable. These will be short videos though, maybe about a min or two long, not high def, so its not too unimaginable...

  • Visual Studio 2008's annoying auto-handling of block comments

    - by Dave
I read that great post on Visual Studio 2008 annoyances, but didn't see this one. It drives me crazy. Now, I realize that some people use block comments like this for function documentation and the like: /* * * * */ But you know, this is VS2008 and now we can use ///. The only time I ever feel the need to use C-style commenting is when I have some junk or test code that I temporarily want to remove. It absolutely drives me nuts when I do the first /* and then when I add a line after the test code, it automatically puts a space after the * and I end up with this: * / . So then I end up always having to backspace to complete the block comment. I looked through all of the C# editor settings in the VS2008 IDE, and didn't find anything relevant. Does this drive anyone else here crazy, or am I turning into a codemudgeon?

  • Calculate the year for ending month/day?

    - by Dave Jarvis
Given: Start Year Start Month & Start Day End Month & End Day What SQL statement results in TRUE if a date lands between the Start and End days? 1st example: Start Date = 11-22 End Date = 01-17 Start Year = 2009 Specific Date = 2010-01-14 TRUE 2nd example: Start Date = 11-22 End Date = 11-16 Start Year = 2009 Specific Date = 2010-11-20 FALSE 3rd example: Start Date = 02-25 End Date = 03-19 Start Year = 2004 Specific Date = 2004-02-29 TRUE I was thinking of using the MySQL functions datediff and sign plus a CASE condition to determine whether the year wraps, but it seems rather expensive. Am looking for a simple, efficient calculation. Update 1 The problem is the end date cannot simply use the year. The year must be increased if the end month/day combination happens before the start date. The start date is easy: Start Date = date( concat_ws( '-', year, Start Month, Start Day ) ) The end date is not so simple. Update 2 Here is what I was thinking about for obtaining the end year: end_year = case sign( diff( date( concat_ws( year, start_month, start_day ) ), date( concat_ws( year, end_month, end_day ) ) ) ) when -1 then Start_Year + 1 else Start_Year end case Then wrap that expression (once syntactically correct) inside of another date, followed by BETWEEN statement. Update 3 To clear up some confusion: there is no end year. The end year must be calculated. Thank you!

  • Bulk inserting and updating with Entity Framework (Probably a better alternative?)

    - by Dave
    I have a data set of devices, addresses, and companies that I need to import into our database, with the catch that our database may already include a specific device/address/company that is included in the new data set. If that is the case, I need to update that entry with the new information in the data set, excluding addresses. We check if an exact copy of that address exists, otherwise we make a new entry. My issue is that it is very slow to attempt to grab a device/company in EF and if it exist updated it, otherwise insert it. To fix this I tried to get all the companies, devices, and addresses and insert them into respective hashmaps, and check if the identifier of the new data exists in the hashmap. This hasn't led to any performance increases. I've included my code below. Typically I would do a batch insert, I'm not sure what I would do for a batch update though. Can someone advise a different route? var context = ObjectContextHelper.CurrentObjectContext; var oldDevices = context.Devices; var companies = context.Companies; var addresses = context.Addresses; Dictionary<string, Company> companyMap = new Dictionary<string, Company>(StringComparer.OrdinalIgnoreCase); Dictionary<string, Device> deviceMap = new Dictionary<string, Device>(StringComparer.OrdinalIgnoreCase); Dictionary<string, Address> addressMap = new Dictionary<string, Address>(StringComparer.OrdinalIgnoreCase); foreach (Company c in companies) { if (c.CompanyAccountID != null && !companyMap.ContainsKey(c.CompanyAccountID)) companyMap.Add(c.CompanyAccountID, c); } foreach (Device d in oldDevices) { if (d.SerialNumber != null && !deviceMap.ContainsKey(d.SerialNumber)) deviceMap.Add(d.SerialNumber, d); } foreach (Address a in addresses) { string identifier = GetAddressIdentifier(a); if (!addressMap.ContainsKey(identifier)) addressMap.Add(identifier, a); } foreach (DeviceData.TabsDevice device in devices) { // update a device Company tempCompany; Address tempAddress; Device currentDevice; if (deviceMap.ContainsKey(device.SerialNumber)) //update a device deviceMap.TryGetValue(device.SerialNumber, out currentDevice); else // insert a new device currentDevice = new Device(); currentDevice.SerialNumber = device.SerialNumber; currentDevice.SerialNumberTABS = device.SerialNumberTabs; currentDevice.Model = device.Model; if (device.CustomerAccountID != null && device.CustomerAccountID != "") { companyMap.TryGetValue(device.CustomerAccountID, out tempCompany); currentDevice.CustomerID = tempCompany.CompanyID; currentDevice.CustomerName = tempCompany.CompanyName; } if (companyMap.TryGetValue(device.ServicingDealerAccountID, out tempCompany)) currentDevice.CompanyID = tempCompany.CompanyID; currentDevice.StatusID = 1; currentDevice.Retries = 0; currentDevice.ControllerFamilyID = 1; if (currentDevice.EWBFrontPanelMsgOption == null) // set the Panel option to the default if it isn't set already currentDevice.EWBFrontPanelMsgOption = context.EWBFrontPanelMsgOptions.Where( i => i.OptionDescription.Contains("default")).Single(); // link the device to the existing address as long as it is actually an address if (addressMap.TryGetValue(GetAddressIdentifier(device.address), out tempAddress)) { if (GetAddressIdentifier(device.address) != "") currentDevice.Address = tempAddress; else currentDevice.Address = null; } else // insert a new Address and link the device to it (if not null) { if (GetAddressIdentifier(device.address) == "") currentDevice.Address = null; else { tempAddress = new Address(); tempAddress.Address1 = device.address.Address1; tempAddress.Address2 = device.address.Address2; tempAddress.Address3 = device.address.Address3; tempAddress.Address4 = device.address.Address4; tempAddress.City = device.address.City; tempAddress.Country = device.address.Country; tempAddress.PostalCode = device.address.PostalCode; tempAddress.State = device.address.State; addresses.AddObject(tempAddress); addressMap.Add(GetAddressIdentifier(tempAddress), tempAddress); currentDevice.Address = tempAddress; } } if (!deviceMap.ContainsKey(device.SerialNumber)) // if inserting, add to context { oldDevices.AddObject(currentDevice); deviceMap.Add(device.SerialNumber, currentDevice); } } context.SaveChanges();

  • IIS Restrict Access to Directory for table of users

    - by Dave
I am trying to restrict access to files in a directory and it's sub directories based user rights. My user rights are stored in an MS SQL database in a custom format, however it is easy to query the list of users with rights to this directory. I need to know how to apply this to a web config on the server to authenticate against a query of a database table to determine if the username is authenticated and allowed to view the file. Of course if they are not they should be blocked / given a 404. I am using IIS and ASP.Net MVC3 with a form based security as opposed to the built in roles and responsibilities that was custom made for us and that works great. There are over 10k users tied to this non-Active Directory authentication so I am not planning to change my authentication type so please don't go there. It is not my decision on the choice of platform, or I would have gone with a LAMP server and been done with this. Edit 11-13-2012 @ 8:57a: In the web config can you put the result of an SQL query?

  • How can I increment a counter every N loops in JMeter?

    - by Dave Hunt
I want to test concurrency, and reliably replicate an issue that JMeter brought to my attention. What I want to do is set a unique identifier (currently the time in milliseconds with a counter appended) and increment the counter between loops but not between threads. The idea being that the number of threads I have set up is the number of identical identifiers before incrementing and using another. If I had 3 threads with a loop count of 2 I want: 1. Unique ID: <current-time-in-millis>000000 2. Unique ID: <current-time-in-millis>000000 3. Unique ID: <current-time-in-millis>000000 4. Unique ID: <current-time-in-millis>000001 5. Unique ID: <current-time-in-millis>000001 6. Unique ID: <current-time-in-millis>000001 I've tried using Throughput Controllers to increment a counter, as well as several other things that seemed they should work but had no luck. This seems like something JMeter should be able to do. Is there any way to get the value of the loop count?

  • Tools to document/visualize call graph?

    - by Dave Griffiths
Hi, having recently joined a project with a vast amount of code to get to grips with, I would like to start documenting and visualizing some of the flows through the call graph to give me a better understanding of how everything fits together. This is what I would like to see in my ideal tool: every node is a function/method nodes are connected if one function can call another optional square box in between detailing conditions under which call is made (or a label icon you can hover over like a tooltip) also icon on edge describing parameters hover over node and description is displayed optional icons for node to display pseudo code scenario/domain view - display subset of complete diagram for particular use-case slide view mode - for each frame, the currently executing function is highlighted plenty of options over what to display to reduce on-screen clutter the interactive use of such a tool is key, I'm not looking for a Graphviz type solution because there would be too much clutter. The ability to form a view of a subset of the entire graph would be very handy (maybe with the unimportant clutter greyed out). Don't need automatic generation from source code, happy to enter it manually. Almost like a mind-map. Does that make sense? If you are not aware of such a tool, do you also think it would be useful? (Just in case I decide to go and scratch that itch one day!)

  • Convert Subclass to Inherited Class

    - by Dave
I have a C# .NET 2.0 project A that has a form (TreeForm) that uses Tree objects. I have a project B that has a class Oak that inherits Tree. When I try to reference and use the TreeForm in project B with my Oak objects, it's looking for objects of type Tree. I've tried casting the Oak objects to Tree, but I get the error "Cannot convert type Oak to Tree". How can I use my Oak objects in the TreeForm from project A?

  • ClickableSpan on TextView in App Widget

    - by Dave Allison
I have created an App Widget for Android 1.5. It uses a TextView to present a number of individual Text Links using ClickableSpans. However, the onClick event handler on the ClickableSpan is never called, it appears that you can not select individual components on the widget just the whole widget. This approach works fine for a normal app, so what I do I need to change to make this work for a widget?

  • Implementing a logging library in .NET with a database as the storage medium

    - by Dave
I'm just starting to work on a logging library that everyone can use to keep track of any sort of system information while the user is running our application. The simplest example so far is to track Info, Warnings, and Errors. I want all plugins to be able to use this feature, but since each developer might have a different idea of what's important to report, I want to keep this as generic as possible. In the C++ world, I would normally use something like a stl::pair<string,string> to act as a key value pair structure, and have a stl::list of these to act as a "row" in the log. The log cache would then be a list<list<pair<string, string>>> (ugh!). This way, the developers can use a const string key like INFO, WARNING, ERROR to have a consistent naming for a column in the database (for SELECTing specific types of information). I'd like the database to be able to deal with any number of distinct column names. For example, John might have an INFO row with a column called USER, and Bill might have an INFO row with a column called FILENAME. I want the log viewer to be able to display all information, and if one report doesn't have a value for INFO / FILENAME, those fields should just appear blank. So one option is to use List<List<KeyValuePair<String,String>>, and the another is to have the log library consumer somehow "register" its schema, and then have the database do an ALTER TABLE to handle this situation. Yet another idea is to have a table that's just for key value pairs, with a foreign key that maps the key value pairs back to the original log entry. I obviously don't want logging to bog down the system, so I only lock the log cache to make a copy of the data (and remove the already-copied data), then a background thread will dump the information to the database. My specific questions regarding this are: Do you see any performance issues? In other words, have you ever tried something like this and found that certain things just don't work well in practice? Is there a more .NETish way to implement the key value pairs, other than List<List<KeyValuePair<String,String>>>? Even if there is a way to do #2 better, is the ALTER TABLE idea I proposed above a Bad Thing? Would you recommend multiple databases over a single one? I don't yet have an idea of how frequently the log would get written to, but we ideally would like to have lots of low level information. Perhaps there should be a DB with a fixed schema only for the low level stuff, and then another DB that's more flexible for reporting information back to users.

  • NSPredicateEditorRowTemplate for date comparison

    - by Dave DeLong
I'm building an NSPredicateEditor, and I want the ability to do advanced date comparison. I realize that I can build an NSPredicateEditorRowTemplate with a rightExpressionType of NSDateAttributeType, but the predicates I want to build need to be much more advanced than that. For example, I need to basic comparison like: dateKeypath < aDate dateKeypath <= aDate dateKeypath = aDate dateKeypath != aDate dateKeypath > aDate dateKeypath >= aDate These basic comparisons are quite easy to achieve, and I have these working. However, I also need to do comparisons like: dateKeypath isInTheLast n days (or weeks, months, years) dateKeypath isNotInTheLast n days (or weeks, months, years) dateKeypath between aDate and anotherDate How can I achieve these sorts of comparisons? I understand that I'll need to create a custom NSPredicateEditorRowTemplate, but I haven't found any clear documentation on how to achieve something like this. EDIT Bonus points are available for also knowing how to make these comparisons a full date-time (year-month-day-hour-minute-second) comparison (as NSDateAttributeType only has year-month-day granularity).

  • Moving Wordpress from Apache to IIS

    - by Dave Hunt
I've encountered a problem when moving a Wordpress installation from a Linux Apache server to a Windows IIS server. Nearly all pages load blank, including /wp-admin/. I created a php file in the main directory to check phpinfo, and it loads fine. I've copied the file system over, as well as the database. I've also updated the wp-config.php with the correct credentials. I think it has something to do with .htaccess, but I'm not sure how to correct it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Adding reference to Office library failing: type or namespace name Word not found

    - by Dave
I'm trying to use the sample code here: I went to "Add Reference" dialog and added "Microsoft Word 12 library", but it doesn't appear in the Solution Explorer. I also added: using Microsoft.Office; I get the following error message when trying to declare a "Word" object. Error 1: The type or namespace name 'Word' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) Any suggestions on how to properly reference the Word library?

  • azure performance

    - by Dave K
I've moved my app from a dedicated server to azure (and sql azure), and have noticed substantial performance degradation. obviously not having the database and web server on the same piece of hardware is much of it, but I'm curious what other people have found in migrating to azure, and if there is anything any of you would suggest I do to improve it. Right now I'm considering moving back to my dedicated server... So in summary, are there any rules of thumb for this, existing research (wasn't able to find much) or other pieces of advice on improving the performance of the app? has anyone else found the same to be true, and improved their site's performance in some way? it's built in C# on asp.net mvc 2. Thanks!

  • Essential Training Topics for Supervisors of ASP.NET Developers

    - by Dave Johnson
I have a co-worker who supervises a group of ASP.NET developers who are doing lots of ASP.NET/SQL Server apps. My co-worker was very technical at one time, but his last programming assignment was writing Fortran code in the 1980s. He has asked me to help him gain a deeper knowledge of ASP.NET Web application development to equip him in his supervisory role. I will be spending an hour every other week with him providing training, and he will probably not have a lot of time to commit otherwise. What would you recommend as topics to cover, tutorial resources, etc. so that I can help him get up to speed in his role as a supervisor of ASP.NET developers?

  • Remove redundant SQL code

    - by Dave Jarvis
    Code The following code calculates the slope and intercept for a linear regression against a slathering of data. It then applies the equation y = mx + b against the same result set to calculate the value of the regression line for each row. Can the two separate sub-selects be joined so that the data and its slope/intercept are calculated without executing the data gathering part of the query twice? SELECT AVG(D.AMOUNT) as AMOUNT, Y.YEAR * ymxb.SLOPE + ymxb.INTERCEPT as REGRESSION_LINE, Y.YEAR as YEAR, MAKEDATE(Y.YEAR,1) as AMOUNT_DATE FROM CITY C, STATION S, YEAR_REF Y, MONTH_REF M, DAILY D, (SELECT ((avg(t.AMOUNT * t.YEAR)) - avg(t.AMOUNT) * avg(t.YEAR)) / (stddev( t.AMOUNT ) * stddev( t.YEAR )) as CORRELATION, ((sum(t.YEAR) * sum(t.AMOUNT)) - (count(1) * sum(t.YEAR * t.AMOUNT))) / (power(sum(t.YEAR), 2) - count(1) * sum(power(t.YEAR, 2))) as SLOPE, ((sum( t.YEAR ) * sum( t.YEAR * t.AMOUNT )) - (sum( t.AMOUNT ) * sum(power(t.YEAR, 2)))) / (power(sum(t.YEAR), 2) - count(1) * sum(power(t.YEAR, 2))) as INTERCEPT FROM ( SELECT AVG(D.AMOUNT) as AMOUNT, Y.YEAR as YEAR, MAKEDATE(Y.YEAR,1) as AMOUNT_DATE FROM CITY C, STATION S, YEAR_REF Y, MONTH_REF M, DAILY D WHERE $X{ IN, C.ID, CityCode } AND SQRT( POW( C.LATITUDE - S.LATITUDE, 2 ) + POW( C.LONGITUDE - S.LONGITUDE, 2 ) ) < $P{Radius} AND S.STATION_DISTRICT_ID = Y.STATION_DISTRICT_ID AND Y.YEAR BETWEEN 1900 AND 2009 AND M.YEAR_REF_ID = Y.ID AND M.CATEGORY_ID = $P{CategoryCode} AND M.ID = D.MONTH_REF_ID AND D.DAILY_FLAG_ID <> 'M' GROUP BY Y.YEAR ) t ) ymxb WHERE $X{ IN, C.ID, CityCode } AND SQRT( POW( C.LATITUDE - S.LATITUDE, 2 ) + POW( C.LONGITUDE - S.LONGITUDE, 2 ) ) < $P{Radius} AND S.STATION_DISTRICT_ID = Y.STATION_DISTRICT_ID AND Y.YEAR BETWEEN 1900 AND 2009 AND M.YEAR_REF_ID = Y.ID AND M.CATEGORY_ID = $P{CategoryCode} AND M.ID = D.MONTH_REF_ID AND D.DAILY_FLAG_ID <> 'M' GROUP BY Y.YEAR Question How do I execute the duplicate bits only once per query, instead of twice? The duplicate bit is the WHERE clause: $X{ IN, C.ID, CityCode } AND SQRT( POW( C.LATITUDE - S.LATITUDE, 2 ) + POW( C.LONGITUDE - S.LONGITUDE, 2 ) ) < $P{Radius} AND S.STATION_DISTRICT_ID = Y.STATION_DISTRICT_ID AND Y.YEAR BETWEEN 1900 AND 2009 AND M.YEAR_REF_ID = Y.ID AND M.CATEGORY_ID = $P{CategoryCode} AND M.ID = D.MONTH_REF_ID AND D.DAILY_FLAG_ID <> 'M' Related http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1595659/how-to-eliminate-duplicate-calculation-in-sql Thank you!

  • OpenRasta overwriting Content-Length header in HEAD responses

    - by Dave Nichol
I'm creating a pretty simple HTTP service using OpenRasta. For HEAD requests, the HTTP 1.1 spec states that HEAD requests should have the Content-Length set to "the size of the entity-body that would have been sent had the request been a GET" (section 14.13). However, OpenRasta apparently sees that the response body is empty and automatically sets the Content-Length header to "0". What is the recommended way to override this behavior? Thanks-
