• Is there a best coding style for indentations (same line, next line)?

- by Luis Soeiro
I prefer Pascal-like coding style, where the beginning and ending of a code block are on the same column. I think that it is easier to read and to handle cut and paste than the other kind of coding style. The style I prefer (Pascal-like): void fooBar(String s) { int a; int length=s.length(); for (int i=0;i<length;i++) { if (i>10) { System.out.println(i); System.out.println(s.charAt(i)); } } } The style that was adopted by the Java community: void fooBar(String s) { int a; int length=s.length(); for (int i=0;i<length;i++){ if (i>10){ System.out.println(i); System.out.println(s.charAt(i)); } } } So why do you use one type or the other (please cite an objective reason)?

• Is the ruby operator ||= intelligent?

- by brad
I have a question regarding the ||= statement in ruby and this is of particular interest to me as I'm using it to write to memcache. What I'm wondering is, does ||= check the receiver first to see if it's set before calling that setter, or is it literally an alias to x = x || y This wouldn't really matter in the case of a normal variable but using something like: CACHE[:some_key] ||= "Some String" could possibly do a memcache write which is more expensive than a simple variable set. I couldn't find anything about ||= in the ruby api oddly enough so I haven't been able to answer this myself. Of course I know that: CACHE[:some_key] = "Some String" if CACHE[:some_key].nil? would achieve this, I'm just looking for the most terse syntax.

Anyone has an idea why the App crashes. Any help is much appreciated. I did find out that, when I finish() the MAIN activity when I start the FriendListActivity and restart the MAIN activity when closing the FriendListActivity, that the crash does not occur. However, this basically restarts the App and that is not the intention. Thanks all, I got the problem solved. This is what I did. . When moving all gallery related actions to the onCreate, the creash didn't happen anymore. But then after returning to the MAIN activity, the activity wasn't shown. . I then moved all the onCreate (except the super), the generateGallery, and the onStart() to the onResume. Now it works fine!

• How to give FTP address in java?

- by i2ijeya
I have written the code which downloads the file from FTP server. Since I have my FTP server locally and I want to access like "ftp://localhost/alfresco". It was alfresco's FTP. I have the following Code public class FtpTransfer { public static final void main(String[] args) { FTPClient ftp = new FTPClient(); FileOutputStream br = null; try { ftp.connect("ftp://localhost/alfresco"); ftp.login("admin", "admin"); String file = "KPUB//Admin//TMM//Pickup//TMM_TO_ARTESIA_06152010220246.xml"; br = new FileOutputStream("file"); ftp.retrieveFile("/"+file, br); System.out.println("Downloaded..."); } catch(IOException exception) { System.out.println("Error : "+exception); } } } The following exception occurs. • Reading file data during form's clean method

- by Dominic Rodger
So, I'm working on implementing the answer to my previous question. Here's my model: class Talk(models.Model): title = models.CharField(max_length=200) mp3 = models.FileField(upload_to = u'talks/', max_length=200) Here's my form: class TalkForm(forms.ModelForm): def clean(self): super(TalkForm, self).clean() cleaned_data = self.cleaned_data if u'mp3' in self.files: from mutagen.mp3 import MP3 if hasattr(self.files['mp3'], 'temporary_file_path'): audio = MP3(self.files['mp3'].temporary_file_path()) else: # What goes here? audio = None # setting to None for now ... return cleaned_data class Meta: model = Talk Mutagen needs file-like objects - the first case (where the uploaded file is larger than the size of file handled in memory) works fine, but I don't know how to handle InMemoryUploadedFile that I get otherwise. I've tried: # TypeError (coercing to Unicode: need string or buffer, InMemoryUploadedFile found) audio = MP3(self.files['mp3']) # TypeError (coercing to Unicode: need string or buffer, cStringIO.StringO found) audio = MP3(self.files['mp3'].file) # Hangs seemingly indefinitely audio = MP3(self.files['mp3'].file.read()) Is there something wrong with mutagen, or am I doing it wrong?

• Implementing Object Oriented: ansi-C approach

- by No Money
Hey there, I am an Intermediate programmer in Java and know some of the basics in C++. I recently started to scam over "C language" [please note that i emphasized on C language and want to stick with C as i found it to be a perfect tool, so no need for suggestions focusing on why should i move back to C++ or Java or any other crappy language (e.g: C#)]. Moving on, I code an Object Oriented approach in C but kindda scramble with the pointers part. Please understand that I am just a noob trying to extend my knowledge beyond what i learned in High School. Here is my code..... #include <stdio.h> typedef struct per{ int privateint; char *privateString; struct per (*New) (); void (*deleteperOBJ) (struct t_person *); void (*setperNumber) ((struct*) t_person,int); void (*setperString) ((struct*) t_person,char *); void (*dumpperState) ((struct*) t_person); }t_person; void setperNumber(t_person *const per,int num){ if(per==NULL) return; per->privateint=num; } void setperString(t_person *const per, char *string){ if(per==NULL) return; per->privateString=string; } void dumpperState(t_person *const per){ if(per==NULL) return; printf("value of private int==%d\n", per->privateint); printf("value of private string==%s\n", per->privateString); } void deleteperOBJ(struct t_person *const per){ free((void*)t_person->per); t_person ->per = NULL; } main(){ t_person *const per = (struct*) malloc(sizeof(t_person)); per = t_person -> struct per -> New(); per -> setperNumber (t_person *per, 123); per -> setperString(t_person *per, "No money"); dumpperState(t_person *per); deleteperOBJ(t_person *per); } Just to warn you, this program has several errors and since I am a beginner I couldn't help except to post this thread as a question. I am looking forward for assistance. Thanks in advance.

• Jquery - Convert ascii chars back to HTML

- by sdmiller
I am reading data from an html file to load into a div. The problem I am having is, the program that writes the html files is converting to
SO when I execute $('#items').load('/News/list.aspx'); it displays as a string on my page instead of reading it as a page break. I have tried to read the above file into a variable to do a string replace on the
but it doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions?

• How to extract link when given partial link value

- by mrjames
hi, I am using PHP 4, that is what the host has at the moment. How can I extract link from a string when given part of the link to find. Example $find_string = 'http://www.mysite.com/apple'; $string = 'Something and something else < a href="http://www.mysite.com/apple_banana"testlink< /a something else and so forth < a href="http://www.mysite.com/orange"orange< /a In this case I would like to extract only the links that has http:// www.mysite.com/apple in it so it would retrieve http://www.mysite.com/apple_bananan Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Regex to validate for Unique Well Identifier in rails

- by Jasper502
I am a regex newbie and can't seem to figure this one out. Here is a link to the required string formats: http://earth.gov.bc.ca/royp-bin/phcgi.exe?PH_QKC=DOCUWI&PH_APP=RMSprodApp&PH_HTML=DOCUWI.htm For example: 100041506421W500 = 1+0+{01-16}+{01-36}+{001-129}+{01-36}+W+{1-6}+0+{0-9} I tried this: ^10[0|2-9]{1}0*([1-9]|1[0-6])0*([1-9]|[12][0-9]|3[0-6])0*([1-9][0-9]|1[0-2][0-9])0*([1-9]|[12][0-9]|3[0-6])W[1-6]0[0-9]$ In a regex validator and it sort of works except that 1041506421W500 and 10000000041506421W500 validates. The entire string can only be 16 characters long. I am pretty sure I am missing something obvious here regarding the leading zeros. Tried the NTS format and running into the same sort of problems.

Or multithreading will take this much time only?

• Creating a new Guid inside a code snippet using c#

- by Rob
I want to make an intellisense code snippet using Ctl K + Ctl X that actually executes code when it runs... for example, I would like to do the following: string.Format("{MM/dd/yyyy}", System.DateTime.Now); But rather than giving me that string value, I want the date in the format specified. Another example of what I want is to create a new Guid but truncate to the first octet, so I would want to use a create a new Guid using System.Guid.NewGuid(); to give me {798400D6-7CEC-41f9-B6AA-116B926802FE} for example but I want the value: 798400D6 from the code snippet. I'm open to not using an Intellisense Code Snippet.. I just thought that would be easy.

• c++ function overloading, making fwrite/fread act like PHP versions

I'm used to the PHP fwrite/fread parameter orders, and i want to make them the same in C++ too. I want it to work with char and string types, and also any data type i put in it (only if length is defined). I am total noob on c++, this is what i made so far: size_t fwrite(FILE *fp, const std::string buf, const size_t len = SIZE_MAX){ if(len == SIZE_MAX){ return fwrite(buf.c_str(), 1, buf.length(), fp); }else{ return fwrite(buf.c_str(), 1, len, fp); } } size_t fwrite(FILE *fp, const void *buf, const size_t len = SIZE_MAX){ if(len == SIZE_MAX){ return fwrite((const char *)buf, 1, strlen((const char *)buf), fp); }else{ return fwrite(buf, 1, len, fp); } } Should this work just fine? And how should this be done if i wanted to do it the absolutely best possible way?

- by Jam
I have a thread pool that loops over a bunch of pages and checks to see if some string is there or not. If String is found, or not found response is near instant, however if server is offline or application is not running getting a rejection seems to take seconds How can I change my code to fail faster? for (Thread thread : pool) { thread.start(); } for (Thread thread : pool) { try { thread.join(); } catch (InterruptedException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } Here is my run method @Override public void run() { for (Box b : boxes) { try { connection = new URL(b.getUrl()).openConnection(); scanner = new Scanner(connection.getInputStream()); scanner.useDelimiter("\\Z"); content = scanner.next(); if (content.equals("YES")) { } else { System.out.println("\tFAILED ON " + b.getName() + " BAD APPLICATION STATE"); } } catch (Exception ex) { System.out.println("\tFAILED ON " + b.getName() + " BAD APPLICATION STATE"); } } }

• Input multiple file names in windows open file dialog box

- by goodiet
Windows 7 allows you to select multiple files to open at once by using ctrl or shift key. The "File Name" input field at the bottom of the dialog box would auto populate with the following sample: "aaa.txt" "bbb.txt" "ccc.txt" "ddd.txt" I have 14,000 files in a folder and I only need a range of files (approx 500). When I use the shift key to select a range of files, the "File Name" field auto populates all 500 file names. Windows would cut me off at the 260th character when I try to paste in a pre-generated string into the "File Name" field. Is there a way to bypass the 260 character limit so it would accept my entire string with 500 file names?

Here are the options I thought: while (cinch1ch2) { // process ch1 & ch2 } std::string str; while (getline(cin, str) ){ //split string } Also, I want to validate the input to make sure that it is correct. Please suggest the best way. If this is a duplicate, please point me to the right one. Thanks.
