  • Coming Up with a Good Algorithm for a Simple Idea

    - by mkoryak
I need to come up with an algorithm that does the following: Lets say you have an array of positive numbers (e.g. [1,3,7,0,0,9]) and you know beforehand their sum is 20. You want to abstract some average amount from each number such that the new sum would be less by 7. To do so, you must follow these rules: you can only subtract integers the resulting array must not have any negative values you can not make any changes to the indices of the buckets. The more uniformly the subtraction is distributed over the array the better. Here is my attempt at an algorithm in JavaScript + underscore (which will probably make it n^2): function distributeSubtraction(array, goal){ var sum = _.reduce(arr, function(x, y) { return x + y; }, 0); if(goal < sum){ while(goal < sum && goal > 0){ var less = ~~(goal / _.filter(arr, _.identity).length); //length of array without 0s arr = _.map(arr, function(val){ if(less > 0){ return (less < val) ? val - less : val; //not ideal, im skipping some! } else { if(goal > 0){ //again not ideal. giving preference to start of array if(val > 0) { goal--; return val - 1; } } else { return val; } } }); if(goal > 0){ var newSum = _.reduce(arr, function(x, y) { return x + y; }, 0); goal -= sum - newSum; sum = newSum; } else { return arr; } } } else if(goal == sum) { return _.map(arr, function(){ return 0; }); } else { return arr; } } var goal = 7; var arr = [1,3,7,0,0,9]; var newArray = distributeSubtraction(arr, goal); //returned: [0, 1, 5, 0, 0, 7]; Well, that works but there must be a better way! I imagine the run time of this thing will be terrible with bigger arrays and bigger numbers. edit: I want to clarify that this question is purely academic. Think of it like an interview question where you whiteboard something and the interviewer asks you how your algorithm would behave on a different type of a dataset.

  • Why is Microsoft not developing a Halo-like next gen title using C#? [closed]

    - by Joan Venge
The question might look subjective but considering Microsoft: Owns the Xbox 360 platform Owns the Windows platform Have their own game studio (MGS) Own other 3rd party developers Is a major publisher makes me wonder why Microsoft doesn't push their flagship language to prove that not only you can cut down significant development time, and therefore money, but also show that you can release a next gen title where the real time interactivity doesn't suffer. If Microsoft were to do this once, I am sure many AAA developers would jump on that wagon too.

  • Singleton class in DLL used on multiple virtual directories

    - by Drejc
    I have the following situation: multiple virtual directories under same application pool in IIS copy of same DLL in all those directories (same version number) a singleton class in one in this DLL The question is, is this singleton class created only once for all those Virtual Directory instances or is there for each of there one singleton class. The code looks something like this: [ Transaction(TransactionOption.Supported), ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.AutoDispatch), Guid("7DE45C4D-19BE-4AA4-A2DA-F4D86E6502A8") ] public class SomeClass { private static readonly Singleton singleton = new Singleton();

  • What code have you written with #pragma you found useful?

    - by Xavier Ho
I've never understood the need of #pragma once when #ifndef #define #endif always works. I've seen the usage of #pragma comment to link with other files , but setting up the compiler settings was easier with an IDE. What are some other usages of #pragma that is useful, but not widely known? Edit: I'm not just after a list of #pragma directives. Perhaps I should rephrase this question a bit more: What code have you written with #pragma you found useful?

  • In GWT I'd like to load the main page on www.domain.com and a dynamic page on www.domain.com/xyz - I

    - by Mike Brecht
Hi, I have a question for which I'm sure there must a simple solution. I'm writing a small GWT application where I want to achieve this: www.domain.com : should serve the welcome page www.domain.com/xyz : should serve page xyz, where xyz is just a key for an item in a database. If there is an item associated with key xyz, I'll load that and show a page, otherwise I'll show a 404 error page. I was trying to modify the web.xml file accordingly but I just couldn't make it work. I could make it work with an url-pattern if the key in question is after another /, for example: www.domain.com/search/xyz. However, I'd like to have the key xyz directly following the root / (http://www.domain.com/xyz). Something like <servlet-mapping> <servlet-name>main</servlet-name> <url-pattern>/</url-pattern> </servlet-mapping> doesn't seem to work as I don't know how to address the main page index.html (as it's not an actual servlet) which will then load my main GWT module. I could make it work with a bad work around (see below): Redirecting a 404 exception to index.html and then doing the look up in the main entry point, but I'm sure that's not the best practice, also for SEO purposes. Can anyone give me a hint on how to configure the web.xml with GWT for my purpose? Thanks a lot. Mike Work-around via 404: Web.xml: <web-app> <error-page> <exception-type>404</exception-type> <location>/index.html</location> </error-page> <welcome-file-list> <welcome-file>index.html</welcome-file> </welcome-file-list> </web-app> index.html -- Main Entry point -- onModuleLoad(): String path = Window.Location.getPath(); if (path == null || path.length() == 0 || path.equalsIgnoreCase("/") || path.equalsIgnoreCase("/index.html")) { ... // load main page } else { lookup(path.substring(1)); // that's key xyz

  • Multicolor text in TreeView (Embarcadero RAD studio)

    - by Andrew
Hello everyone, I am writing a piece of software in C++ RAD studio 2010 and got a question about TreeView. Is it possible to use multicolor text in a TTreeView component? I could not find a easy way but to implement custom drawing which seems to be weird nowadays. Are there any straight-forward ways or maybe additional components that can do it for me?

  • Winforms Checkbox : CheckState property Indeterminate renders differently

    - by joedotnot
In C# environment, setting a checkbox's CheckState property to Indeterminate displays a "green square" inside the checkbox. In VB environment, this displays as a "grayed out check" (which is less intuitive, even for "dummy" users). How do i make Indeterminate state look like a "green square" in VB.NET ? Btw, i am using VS2008, Winforms 2.0. (Btw2: I tried to create two tags CheckState Indeterminate, which is more appropriate to my question, but disallowed by StackOverflow due to points!)

  • ASP.NET AJAX Partial Rendering

    - by AJ
Hello, I have a question about how ASP.NET AJAX partial rendering actually works. Does it: 1) Renders the whole page on the server, transmits the whole page to the client, the client then merges just the area contained in the update panel. 2) Renders the whole page on the server, transmits and merges just the area contained by the update panel. 3) Renders, transmits and merges just the area contained by the update panel. Thanks, AJ

  • How to save video from a url to disk, also how to begin playback after some buffering?

    - by Shizam
First question is, given a url to an mp4 video, how can I save that file to disk? The followup to that is while its saving, can I begin playback after its buffered some of the video to disk or do I have to wait for the entire file to be written and then: MPMoviePlayerController* theMovie=[[MPMoviePlayerController alloc] initWithContentURL:theURL]; using the path to the local file. Thanks, Sam

  • Change Browser settings by script

    - by jAndy
Hi Folks, Afaik, you can change/manipulate browser settings in Mozilla/Netscape browsers. For Instance "netscape.security.PrivilegeManager.enablePrivilege('someprivilege');" Of course the user gets informed about that and needs to verify the action. My question is, do other browser have similar functionality? IE, Safari/Chrome ? Kind Regards --Andy

  • How to scroll text in Python/Curses subwindow?

    - by lecodesportif
In my Python script which uses Curses, I have a subwin to which some text is assigned. Because the text length may be longer than the window size, the text should be scrollable. It doesn't seem that there is any CSS-"overflow" like attribute for Curses windows. The Python/Curses docs are also rather cryptic on this aspect. Does anybody here have an idea how I can code a scrollable Curses subwindow using Python and actually scroll through it? \edit: more precise question
