• Most secure way to have IPtables auto-loaded using Debian / Linux

  I'd like to know the safest way to load iptables using Debian. Of course, I can use a script that uses iptables-restore : #!/bin/sh iptables-restore < /etc/firewall.conf but : 1) where is the safest place to have it loaded ? /etc/network/if-up.d ? I'm concerned about the script being loaded early enough at boot time, and reliably enough when plugging/unplugging interfaces ... 2) is this script method using iptables-restore the most secure way ? 3) additionnally, how much does the answer validity stretch to other Linux distros ( Ubuntu, Fedora, CentOS ) ?   I'm setting up a ftp server, that will allow anonymous to READ/WRITE to the server. When I tried to set it to 777 i got the following error, when i tried to log in. 500 OOPS: vsftpd: refusing to run with writeable anonymous root login failed. Do i need to set up anything else to allow READ/WRITE for anonymous?

So instead of updating in each of them using dat file individually I tried to create a shared folder in server, and created a UNC in site repository. I downloaded the file DAT Package For Use with Mcafee AutoUpdate Architect & ePO 3.0 from http://www.mcafee.com/apps/downloads/security-updates/security-updates.aspx. When I try to update it is giving an error Error occurred while downloading file SiteStat.xml. So how fix it?

• Auto-scaling EC2 Servers and Updating Code

  We've come to the point where we need to set up autoscaling for our web server and I'm unsure how to go about the process of scaling servers and updating the the existing code without remaking a new AMI and changing the autoscale config to use it. I've read a bit about people bundling the new code and uploading it to s3 and having new servers grab the bundle on boot up but that doesn't seem all that pleasant either. Currently the web app's files live in a git repo, and when we update the code, we push it to github, ssh into the web app and run a hook to bring down the latest code. So I was thinking that another option could be to just run that hook on an hourly or daily cron task. Unfortunately that doesn't cover everything type of update (for example new blog posts' images and such which aren't included in the git repo) but it's something. Could anyone provide some advice on what a common solution is or anything as to why my proposed solution is a bad idea? Thanks all

• Auto logon to internet provider

  We use wireless internet access. The wireless is secured and to get an IP address, you provide the right key. That is setup just fine. However, on top of that, the first time we access the internet, a browser page appears and we have to enter a password. then we have access to the internet for a period of time. How can the password step be automated? I also have a web-based printer that doesn't work (except via USB connection) because it can't get out to the web. I can't change the router settings. Is there anything I can do to get the printer working and automatic the access?

I've created a directory in /var/ftp and then I bind this to the directory that I wish to limit access to. What else do I need to specifically do to ensure that when this user logs into FTP, they only have access to this directory please?

• A way to auto cycle (close) through all screen sessions

  I frequently use screen when I log into the interactive nodes to a supercomputer that I have access to -- and I often run things and move on. There are about 20 separate nodes that I can log into; and if I check any one of them I'll have something like 4 detached sessions. Each of those sessions will have maybe 5 screen sessions within that. Is there a quick way to cycle through all of these and close them down if they are not running any processes? My current process is to screen -ls and then screen -r #### then type exit until I'm back to the base screen.

• Using command line to connect to a wireless network with an http login

  I'm trying to connect to a wifi network where it hijacks all requests and redirects you to a page where you have to agree to a terms of use before it lets you connect to the actual outside world. This is a pretty common practice, and usually doesn't pose much of a problem. However, I've got a computer running Ubuntu 9.10 server with no windowing system. How can I use the command line to agree to the terms of use? I don't have internet access on the computer to download packages via apt-get or anything like that. Sure, I can think of any number of workarounds, but I suspect there's an easy way to use wget or curl or something. Basically, I need a command line solution for sending an HTTP POST request essentially clicking on a button. For future reference, it'd be helpful to know how to send a POST request with, say, a username and password if I ever find myself in that situation in another hotel or airport.

  I use my ICQ account once a month to retrieve any heartbeat messages from the remaining contacts, previously was doing this grave care job via meebo.com which is shut down now. After coming online via Pidgin, some contacts started to say that following messages are sent from me embarrassingly often: USERNAME only receives messages from contacts on his contact list or from contacts that have registered their phone number. In order to send USERNAME a message, please register your phone number to ICQ, or add USERNAME to your contact list, and once USERNAME adds you to his contact list you can send USERNAME messages They have me in a client-side contact list, or I have them in my serverlist yet not being listed in theirs; that makes no difference, I still don't want to cause this spam to be sent to unlisted/non-subscribed contacts, is there any option to turn it off in normal ICQ clients?

I was wondering which file I should place this bash command in so it will be run on startup. # Start the MongoDB server /Applications/MongoDB/bin/mongod --dbpath /usr/local/mongo/data --fork --logpath /usr/local/mongo/log I have been scouring the net and think it is between ~/.bashrc, ~/profile, /etc/bashrc, /etc/profile or ~/.bash_profile. Although I have tried these and they seem to run on terminal startup not Mac startup. Am I missing a file here? Thanks for any help you can give.

  I have a situation where I need to have PuTTY (or another SSH client for Windows) automatically log into another machine via SSH. I realize that this isn't a good idea security-wise, but unfortunately I'm constrained by the limitations both on the client and the server. The best solution would be to have a shortcut or script on the desktop that, when double clicked, will connect to the server and automatically log in. Can I do this with PuTTY? I am willing to explore public key authentication, but I'm not sure where the PuTTY key resides or how to copy it to the server, as the app starts automatically upon login.

  Is there the possibility to limit Active Directory users' max concurrent login sessions? I've read many articles and discussions about the solution, but none of them seem to be working. Many had suggested UserLogin script that doesn't work in Windows Server 2008. Some other suggested CConnect that is not good enough. It's also very complicated. Some others have introduced UserLock that should be paid for. It's wondering that Windows Server 2003 DOES have the feature (wile as a third-party), but Windows Server 2008 doesn't have! • user related commands hang on open("/etc/localtime", O_RDONLY) = 4 in CentOS 5.5

  I am logged in as root when doing a strace -etrace=open adduser git it hangs on open("/etc/localtime", O_RDONLY) = 4 for like 2 minutes then continues on. Also when I try and strace -etrace=open su git it just hangs at the same place as well, I can't login via ssh as the git user either. Some other users I created work just fine, like su tomcat and I can ssh in as tomcat as well. I deleted the file that was at /etc/localtime and replaced it with a symlink to ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/US/Eastern /etc/localtime and it didn't change the behavior in any way.

  I've managed to configure my test Ubuntu 10.04 Beta 2 Server VM to accept logins (via ssh) from users who have domain accounts in active directory via Kerberos, nsswitch.conf and PAM configurations. The final thing I'd like to happen is locating their home directory on a Windows server share. Each domain account ($USER) has a windows share ala: \\winsrvr\users\$USER.   I have configured Routing and Remote Access Service in Windows Server 2003 as the VPN server. VPN users are defined in Active Directory which is running on this server too. How i can configure the server to give each user a limited download size (for example 1GB) and does not authenticate them when they exceeds their download quota. The VPN server should also disconnect the users that reach their quota. Update: Apparently a third-party RADIUS server could provide this feature. One solution I have found is TekRADIUS but it is commercial. FreeRADIUS is a open-source free RADIUS server but I am not sure if it could these kind of features.

• Spotify stopped scrobbling to libre.fm - unable to login

  I've set Spotify up to scrobble to libre.fm using the hosts file hack, as specified on the wiki, adding these two entries to my hosts file. 149.20.54.250 post.audioscrobbler.com 149.20.54.250 ws.audioscrobbler.com This worked for a while. However, Spotify now tells me that it can't log in to libre.fm. I've double checked my username and password. I haven't changed anything else. Using nslookup confirms that the above names resolve to the correct IPs. So, how do I fix this?

• Windows XP, have to use ctrl+alt+delete to log on as local administrator

  Hey, I have a weird issue, a user was was logging into a laptop using the local admin account which was working fine. I had to create another account on the system, which was also an admin account, when this happened the 'administrator' account disappeared from the 'choose an account to login with' screen. A quick workaround is available, if the user presses ctrl+alt+delete it brings you to the screen where you can type in the username and password, so by manually typing 'administrator' it can log in. Normally this would be easily fixed, I figured the admin account had somehow been disabled from the local system, but i checked all settings and it is setup fine. The laptop is not part of a domain, so I used the management console to delete the new account and all that succeeded in doing was making the 'choose an account to log in with' screen display no accounts to choose. So far I see nothing else to fix it, the option to change the default logon screen to style where you type the username and password also seems to be missing. any ideas?

• Possible causes for Domain server being unavailable?

  One of our servers was compromised after a user with administrative privileges accidentally loaded a virus from a USB drive on a desktop connected to the domain. The two most obvious symptoms of this were: The server is no longer responding to login attempts The root directory of the drive containing user data has been filled with randomly named empty folders. (Initially it was around a million folders, I've been slowly deleting them.) I've run several virus scans from different vendors and am fairly confident the virus has been removed but the damage is done. I'm hoping the two symptoms are related and that once the directories are gone the server will start responding again. The drive is very slow to respond. I'm deleting about 20k folders at a time. Anymore than that and windows explorer becomes unresponsive. In the event that I finish cleaning up the HD and things don't return to normal what other things can I check?

• Making Thunderbird auto-add SMTP identities whenever I reply

  How can I teach Thunderbird to automatically add an SMTP identity whenever I reply to an email directed to <whatever>@<mydomain>? So if an SMTP is configured for <mydomain> but no identity exists for <whatever>@<mydomain>, how can I make Thunderbird dynamically recognize this and add it. Currently I have to manually add the identity every single time, but I would prefer it to to be added ad-hoc. As long as Thunderbird was configured to know about the SMTP serving <mydomain> this should be trivial, but I couldn't find an option. An add-on or something like a catch-all/wildcard identity would also do as long as it doesn't require manually setting up a new identity every time.
