Hi,
I have a Dell pc and when I ran the Vista installation disk which came with the machine, there is no obvious reference to the disk manager where you can add/delete partitions.
Can someone please explain how to find this? Is this an issue with the PC vendor or Microsoft?
Thanks
I am modding out a custom built case/system. I have my motherboard mounted on a metal tray, (Dell did this) has been working great. Not I am modding the case to hold everything and how I want to mount the motherboard on the tray I have a slight gap between the wall of the case and the motherboard/tray.
Can I put a piece of thin anti-static foam/packaging in between the tray and the case?
That is safe right?
For CentOS installation CDs, you can install OS, as well as booting into "rescue" mode so that you can do a chroot mount on the system partition for problem solving, even the system is installed in hardware RAID drives. How can we create a similar thing but on usb flash drive? I tried to do it with unetbootin, but when booting into the USB, eventually the CentOS setup still requires presence of CDs.
Ultimately, I want to use this usb flash drive for remote disaster recovery through say HP iLo remote console / Dell iDrac etc.
I have Windows Vista 64 running on a Dell XPS 420. I hibernate Vista instead of shutting down. When I power back on, if I don't press a key or move the mouse then a minute after powering on it will automatically hibernate. My power settings say to never hibernate or sleep.
Any idea why it is automatically hibernating when it starts up?
HI all,
I recently purchases a bunch of r710 from dell, i installed esx on it. the installation process finished without a problem. however once the esx boot the following error displays at the botton with red letters
00:00:02:21.493 cpu11:4119) mod:2971: Initialization for vmfs2 failed with -1
i installed on two different servers and the same error pops up.
the curius thing is that if i install esxi 3.5 or 4 there is not problem
help
Thanks

Dell computer with Windows 7 and Outlook 2003. I recently added a smart card reader to my computer for the National Guard so that I can access some military sites that require a smart card to log in. Now, every time Outlook attempts to download any mail from my civilian AT&T account (a pop e-mail server), I get a message asking me to "Insert a smart card". I've traced it to the send/receive feature (specifically receiving e-mails) but can find no reason that Outlook should be looking for a smart card.
I bought a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop, and setup Ubuntu 10.04 to dual boot alongside Windows 7. Regrettably, when activating the wireless, I did something in Windows 7 that caused it to overwrite or corrupt the master boot record, so now when I reboot I get the message "No bootable devices found". Is there an easy way to fix this, perhaps via a Linux LiveCD, or do I have to wipe out everything and reinstall?
I have a computer with (presumably unlicensed) Windows XP.
The activation (over the internet) failed, and I now I cannot get into Windows.
After calling Microsoft, it seems like I will have to reinstall everything and install a freshly bought operating system.
What are my options here? Is it worth trying the millions of keys and key generators out there?
EDIT: I have no way of contacting the manufacturer (it's a no-name box, definitely not Dell, HP or IBM).
So, I have a Dell R710 with PERC 6/i Integrated and 6 450Gb Seagate 15k SAS disks in RAID10, I have 30 Xen vps working on it. Now I need to deploy second server with same hardware for same tasks and I want to figure out maybe it's a good idea to use RAID5 instead of RAID10 because we have a lot of "free" memory on first server and not so much "free space". How do I find out disks performance on first server and find out could I move it to RAID5 without slowing down of whole system?
I have a Seagate internal hard disk drive. I recently opened up my laptop [Dell Inspiron N5010] [Warranty has expired], cleaned it and it worked normally after waking up from hibernation. However, when I restarted it, it stuck on windows loading screen, then tried to boot from Dell recovery partition but failed. It gave the error:
Windows has encounter a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer.
This error can be caused by unplugging a removable storage device such as an external
USB drive while the device is in use, or by faulty hardware such as a hard drive or
CD-ROM drive that is failing. Make sure any removable storage is properly connected
and then restart your computer
If you continue to receive this error message, contact the hardware manufacturer.
Status: 0xc00000e9
Info: An unexpected I/O error has occurred.
While cleaning, I had mistakenly touched the round silvery thing at the bottom of the HDD. I don't know whether this has caused the problem or not. Since I have Fedora also installed in the same HDD, I can boot from it but it shows weird read errors when I ask it to mount Windows partitions. The disk utility also says that the Hard Disk has many bad sectors and needs to be replaced.
I downloaded Seatools from Seagate website and used it. In the long test, I gave it permission to repair the first 100 errors which it did successfully. Now I am confused at what I should do.
Internal Hard Disk Costs:
a. Internal HDD 500GB Costs: Rs3518
b.1 External HDD 500GB Costs: Rs3472
b.2 External HDD 1TB Costs: Rs5500
c. Internal to External Converter Costs: Rs650
I have the following options:
(i) Buy an External HDD, backup my data. Try to repair bad sectors of HDD. Then two cases arise:
(a) My Internal HDD gets repaired [almost]
(b) My internal HDD doesn't get repaired. Then I need to buy another internal HDD and replace the damaged one. OR break the seal of the external one and put it inside my laptop as internal. Breaking the case involves risks.
(ii) Buy a Internal HDD and an Internal to External Converter Case [Not very reliable], backup my data. Try to repair bad sectors of HDD. Then two cases arise:
(a) My Internal HDD gets repaired [almost]
(b) My internal HDD doesn't get repaired. Then I need to just put in the new internal HDD I just bought.
Experts, please guide me as to what will be the most VFM option? Also, if a HDD is failing, is it that I shouldn't read from it too otherwise there is a chance of other sectors failing? What I mean is, is it wrong to read from the HDD without taking backup first?
I recently bought a Dell Studio XPS 16, with Windows 7 Premium. It came with all sorts of bloatware, so I decided to install a fresh copy of Windows. However, I can't seem to find a way to download a copy of Windows 7 from Microsoft's website. Is there a way that I can do this (as long as I provide a product key)?
I'm running desktop Ubuntu 9.10 on my Dell laptop. Previously it was Ubuntu 9.04. After some period of time (lets say 3-4 months) my X fails to start automatically after some restart calls. If that takes place my network manager applet doesn't start either (after I do startx). Can any one point out what I'm missing/what's the problem?
My company has an older Dell 2650 server running ArchLinux x64: http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/pedge/en/2650_specs.pdf (2 x 2.4GHz Intel Xeon w/around 3287 RAM according to "free -m")
We use it to host our internal company site and to post some information from our orders to and we'd like the ability to keep it up as much as possible.
What we require:
- It needs to always be functional from 8am to 4pm for our data entry person to use it and others to do other things required on it.
- If it goes down, we need a quick way to get the machine running again.
- If it goes down, we would like to have the data backed up.
Some of the major problems include:
- The servers old and it may have memory issues
- We don't know when one of the hard drives could fail
- Our power goes out here once in a while
We have a battery backup, but that's pretty much it and it's not for long term. If the server does go down, we have another system in place to store order information that comes in while it's down and repost it when it's back, but we need it up during the day.
So we're wondering, what should we get for options? These are the things we thought of, sort of:
Setup RAID 1, but that would involve wiping everything right? If we do that, how would we transfer the data over without messing up the server?
We could buy an extra server or 2 off eBay for $100, the same model, is that practical or should we get something else?
Should we buy a PC or another better server and host off that because it is if anything easier to exchange parts?
Should we keep extra parts handy incase it implodes?
Should we buy/use backup software? We hear drobo's are cool, but suck.
Perhaps there is a software solution to this problem that backs up to another machine or gets us up and running again quickly. Also, if we are to purchase hardware, what is decent? Does anybody know of one for ArchLinux/Linux? We both know a ton about computers but we're kind of unsure what step to take with this, especially with this type of server.
Thanks
Since there us a defect in my laptop screen, I am using an external Dell 1600x1000 monitor. Windows was recognizing the native resolution correctly. But when I installed Ubuntu 10.10, I get only up to 1024x768 in the Monitor preferences. I had a look at this and tried to add resolution by running
xrandr --addmode VGA 1600×1000
but I am getting the error
xrandr: cannot find output "VGA"
What is the way out.
Hi superuser,
Please tell me how to corrupt my hard disk. I have Dell Inspiron 6400 & it's under complete cover insurance. Operating system is WindowS Vista Premium. So please tell me the method which actually work & damage/corrupt my hd.
I have a Dell desktop that is hanging at the Windows XP splash screen and eventually (after about 5 minutes) cycles to a "F1 to retry boot F2 to enter setup utility".
I tried to start the computer in Safe Mode but it eventually cycles to the same "F1, F2" screen.
What are the likely causes and what are the remedies?
Wanting to connect a third monitor to my aging Dell D830 laptop.
It has 2 monitor outputs (VGA + DVI), and I'd like to add a third via USB
This is the sort of thing I'm looking for ("ST Lab U-480 USB to DVI Adapter:
http://www.ascent.co.nz/productspecification.aspx?ItemID=381944
... but it doesn't explicitly support Windows 7 & the manufacturer's site doesn't show any driver updates.
TIA
Hi all, I'm about to buy a new Dell Precision M6500 and can choose either the nVIDIA Quadro FX 3800M or the ATI FirePro M7740 as the graphics card... The ATI card being significantly cheaper!
However, if price were no object, which card would be the best overall performer? The card will be mainly used for games and video encoding...
We have a wireless network that is set to secure, it does show as unsecure on my laptop, and desktop connect to router but no internet access. other computers on the network require password to connect to router and get internet access. Iphone and Ipads connect using password and also have internet access, what can I do to fix it.
Laptop = dell e6410
Router = netgear
The laptop work on other wireless networks without any problem
Using an ATI firepro 4800 card, with three monitors connected (1 dvi, 2 displayport) on Server 2008 R2 worked fine.
Ive now moved to a new machine, although identical spec, with a fresh Server 2012 install, and cannot get a three display output - only two.
When I try to extend the display on to the third monitor, I get the message "The display settings could not be saved. Please try a different combination of display settings"
The machine is a Dell Precision T1600.
Any help appreciated.
i recently bought a DELL Inspiron 15R 2012m Series Laptop. It comes with a built-in AMD Radeon 7670m graphics card.
I installed PES 2012, when I checked the system specification (an option in that PES 2012 game ). I came to know that game runs with Intel HD4000 Graphics and not with my AMD card.
I also changed the swithchable graphics and assigned High Performance to PES2012, but the game still runs on Intel HD4000.
This is my step by step process on a Dell Inspiron 6000 with a brand new 320 HD:
Turn on Laptop
Insert Xubuntu 9.1 disc
Boot to CD-rom
After boot has finished, I install and instance of Xubuntu on the machine
After install (without any errors), I reboot the the machine
On reboot, the BIOS claims to be unable to read from device
What could this be? (Feel free to ask for more information to perform a proper diagnosis)

I have a Dell Poweredge r710 server with five 1 TB disks. All of them are in RAID 5. I was trying to install Centos but it says "Your boot partition is on disk using GPT Partition..."
I read somewhere that centos can't install on a disk larger than 2TB, so I made some partitions smaller, but it's not working.
PS, I am going to install Proxmox on that, but Proxmox also won't accept disks larger than 2TB.
