  • Reference table values in a war against magic numbers

    - by Alex N.
This question bugged me for years now and can't seem to find good solution still. I working in PHP and Java but it sounds like this maybe language-agnostic :) Say we have a standard status reference table that holds status ids for some kind of entity. Further let's assume the table will have just 5 values, and will remain like this for a long time, maybe edited occasionally with addition of a new status. When you fetch a row and need to see what status it is you have 2 options(as I see it at least) - put it straight ID values(magic numbers that is) or use a named constant. Latter seem much cleaner, the question though is where those named constants should leave? In a model class? In a class that uses this particular constant? Somewhere else?

  • Android Video Camera : still picture

    - by Alex
I use the camera intent to capture video. Here is the problem: If I use this line of code, I can record video. But onActivityResult doesn't work. Intent intent = new Intent("android.media.action.VIDEO_CAMERA"); If I use this line of code, after press the recording button, the camera is freezed, I mean, the picture is still. Intent intent = new Intent(MediaStore.ACTION_VIDEO_CAPTURE); BTW, when I use $Intent intent = new Intent(MediaStore.ACTION_IMAGE_CAPTURE); to capture a picture, it works fine. The java file is as follows: package com.camera.picture; import java.io.File; import java.text.SimpleDateFormat; import java.util.Date; import android.app.Activity; import android.content.ContentValues; import android.content.Intent; import android.net.Uri; import android.os.Bundle; import android.os.Environment; import android.provider.MediaStore; import android.util.Log; import android.view.View; import android.widget.Button; import android.widget.ImageView; import android.widget.Toast; import android.widget.VideoView; public class PictureCameraActivity extends Activity { private static final int IMAGE_CAPTURE = 0; private static final int VIDEO_CAPTURE = 1; private Button startBtn; private Button videoBtn; private Uri imageUri; private Uri videoUri; private ImageView imageView; private VideoView videoView; /** Called when the activity is first created. * sets the content and gets the references to * the basic widgets on the screen like * {@code Button} or {@link ImageView} */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); imageView = (ImageView)findViewById(R.id.img); videoView = (VideoView)findViewById(R.id.videoView); startBtn = (Button) findViewById(R.id.startBtn); startBtn.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() { public void onClick(View v) { startCamera(); } }); videoBtn = (Button) findViewById(R.id.videoBtn); videoBtn.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() { @Override public void onClick(View v) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub startVideoCamera(); } }); } public void startCamera() { Log.d("ANDRO_CAMERA", "Starting camera on the phone..."); String fileName = "testphoto.jpg"; ContentValues values = new ContentValues(); values.put(MediaStore.Images.Media.TITLE, fileName); values.put(MediaStore.Images.Media.DESCRIPTION, "Image capture by camera"); values.put(MediaStore.Images.Media.MIME_TYPE, "image/jpeg"); imageUri = getContentResolver().insert( MediaStore.Images.Media.EXTERNAL_CONTENT_URI, values); Intent intent = new Intent(MediaStore.ACTION_IMAGE_CAPTURE); intent.putExtra(MediaStore.EXTRA_OUTPUT, imageUri); intent.putExtra(MediaStore.EXTRA_VIDEO_QUALITY, 1); startActivityForResult(intent, IMAGE_CAPTURE); } protected void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent data) { if (requestCode == IMAGE_CAPTURE) { if (resultCode == RESULT_OK){ Log.d("ANDROID_CAMERA","Picture taken!!!"); imageView.setImageURI(imageUri); } } if (requestCode == VIDEO_CAPTURE) { if (resultCode == RESULT_OK) { Log.d("ANDROID_CAMERA","Video taken!!!"); Toast.makeText(this, "Video saved to:\n" + data.getData(), Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show(); videoView.setVideoURI(videoUri); } } } private void startVideoCamera() { // TODO Auto-generated method stub //create new Intent Log.d("ANDRO_CAMERA", "Starting camera on the phone..."); String fileName = "testvideo.mp4"; ContentValues values = new ContentValues(); values.put(MediaStore.Video.Media.TITLE, fileName); values.put(MediaStore.Video.Media.DESCRIPTION, "Video captured by camera"); values.put(MediaStore.Video.Media.MIME_TYPE, "video/mp4"); videoUri = getContentResolver().insert( MediaStore.Video.Media.EXTERNAL_CONTENT_URI, values); Intent intent = new Intent("android.media.action.VIDEO_CAMERA"); //Intent intent = new Intent(MediaStore.ACTION_VIDEO_CAPTURE); intent.putExtra(MediaStore.EXTRA_OUTPUT, videoUri); intent.putExtra(MediaStore.EXTRA_VIDEO_QUALITY, 1); // start the Video Capture Intent startActivityForResult(intent, VIDEO_CAPTURE); } private static File getOutputMediaFile() { // TODO Auto-generated method stub // To be safe, you should check that the SDCard is mounted // using Environment.getExternalStorageState() before doing this. • mysql_affected_rows() returns 0 for UPDATE statement even when an update actually happens

    - by Alex Moore
I am trying to get the number of rows affected in a simple mysql update query. However, when I run this code below, PHP's mysql_affected_rows() always equals 0. No matter if foo=1 already (in which case the function should correctly return 0, since no rows were changed), or if foo currently equals some other integer (in which case the function should return 1). $updateQuery = "UPDATE myTable SET foo=1 WHERE bar=2"; mysql_query($updateQuery); if (mysql_affected_rows() > 0) { echo "affected!"; } else { echo "not affected"; // always prints not affected } The UPDATE statement itself works. The INT gets changed in my database. I have also double-checked that the database connection isn't being closed beforehand or anything funky. Keep in mind, mysql_affected_rows doesn't necessarily require you to pass a connection link identifier, though I've tried that too. Details on the function: mysql_affected_rows Any ideas? SOLUTION The part I didn't mention turned out to be the cause of my woes here. This PHP file was being called ten times consecutively in an AJAX call, though I was only looking at the value returned on the last call, ie. a big fat 0. My apologies!

  • SVN - ignoring files already in repository

    - by Alex
I have a configuration file in my project which needs to be in the repository (so new developers get it when they checkout the project). Each developer might change some values in the file locally - these changes should not be committed and I don't want them showing in the synchronization menu (I'm using eclipse and subversive if it matters). Note that I can't just set the svn:ignore property since it only works on files that aren't under version control - but I do want to keep a base version of the file in the repository. How can I avoid the file showing in synchronization without deleting it from repository? EDIT: A better description - what I actually need is to be able to set a "read-only" property on the config file, so it can't be changed in the repository as long as the property is on. Do you know anything like this? Thanks

  • Problem with JPopupMenu in a JTree

    - by Alex
Hi guys I have this issue. In a custom JTree I implemented a JPopupMenu to display different JMenuItem according to the node selected using a MouseListener. The JPopupMenu is shown when the mouse right button is clicked. The problem is that if I don’t choose an Item from the PopupMenu but instead I select another node in the tree, either with right or left buttons, this event is never caught by the tree MouseListener Could anyone point me in the right direction to solve this? In case an example is available I’ll appreciate it. Thanks.

  • Tool that auto-generate a code for accesing a xml-file

    - by alex
My application have a configuration xml-file. That file contains more than 50 program settings. At the present time I read and save each program setting separately. I guess It is not effi?iently for such tasks. I need something that can auto-generate a code for load and save my program settings using predefined xml-schema. I found a dataset in Add New Item dialog. Unfortunately, i cannot add new code to dataset1 such as events in set-accessors of properties because of this // Changes to this file may cause incorrect behavior and will be lost if // the code is regenerated. Maybe, there is a tool that allows a user to generate a wrapper for accesing a xml-file ? Such as DataSet1, but with availability to add events.

  • How can I get an Active Directory data code from System.DirectoryServices[.Protocols]?

    - by Alex Waddell
When using .Protocols, I can run the following pseudocode to authenticate to an AD: try { LdapConnection c = new LdapConnection("User", "Password"); c.Bind(); } catch (LdapException le) { Debug.WriteLine(le.ResultCode); } This code will allow me to get the "Invalid Credentials" error string, and the AD code "49", but I need to get the additional data errors similar to an LDAP Java client : [LDAP: error code 49 - 80090308: LdapErr: DSID-0C09030F, comment: AcceptSecurityContext error, data **525**, vece ] 525 – user not found 52e – invalid credentials (bad password) 530 – logon time restriction 532 – password expired 533 – account disabled 701 – account expired 773 – user must reset password

  • How can I write this Table Valued Function as a Stored Procedure?

    - by Alex
I have the following TVF for fulltext search: FUNCTION [dbo].[Fishes_FullTextSearch] (@searchtext nvarchar(4000), @limitcount int) RETURNS TABLE AS RETURN SELECT * FROM Fishes INNER JOIN CONTAINSTABLE(Fishes, *, @searchtext, @limitcount) AS KEY_TBL ON Fishes.Id = KEY_TBL.[KEY] When I'm using this TVF, it doesn't return a collection of objects of type Fish (which I want!) - instead LINQ creates a new result type which includes all "Fish" fields and the fields Key and Rank. In another question, it was suggested that I rewrite this TVF into a stored procedure for it to return Fish objects only. Can someone help me do this please? Also, it needs to be ordered by Rank. Thank you!

  • Can Django be used for web services?

    - by alex
My friend said, "Pylons is so much better for web services." My other friend said, "You can modify Django in a way to do exactly whatever you like." In Django, what is necessary to be modified (urls.py? models classes? settings?) in order to do "web services" with APIs and REST and versioning, etc etc.?

  • How do I delete in Django? (mysql transactions)

    - by alex
If you are familiar with Django, you know that they have a Authentication system with User model. Of course, I have many other tables that have a Foreign Key to this User model. If I want to delete this user, how do I architect a script (or through mysql itself) to delete every table that is related to this user? My only worry is that I can do this manually...but if I add a table , but I forget to add that table to my DELETE operation...then I have a row that links to a deleted, non-existing User.

  • PHP custom function code optimization

    - by Alex
    Now comes the hard part. How do you optimize this function: function coin_matrix($test, $revs) { $coin = array(); for ($i = 0; $i < count($test); $i++) { foreach ($revs as $j => $rev) { foreach ($revs as $k => $rev) { if ($j != $k && $test[$i][$j] != null && $test[$i][$k] != null) { if(!isset($coin[$test[$i][$j]])) { $coin[$test[$i][$j]] = array(); } if(!isset($coin[$test[$i][$j]][$test[$i][$k]])) { $coin[$test[$i][$j]][$test[$i][$k]] = 0; } $coin[$test[$i][$j]][$test[$i][$k]] += 1 / ($some_var - 1); } } } } return $coin; } I'm not that good at this and if the arrays are large, it runs forever. The function is supposed to find all pairs of values from a two-dim array and sum them like this: $coin[$i][$j] += sum_of_pairs_in_array_row / [count(elements_of_row) - 1] Thanks a lot!

  • Javascript code plagiarism checker

    - by Alex Ciminian
I was wondering if there was any tool available that detects code plagiarism and works well with Javascript. I want to test assignment submissions for homework I'm going to hand out. The only tool that I know of that can do this is MOSS, but, from what I've heard, it's pretty poor for anything else than C. Unfortunately, I can't test it yet because I don't have submissions :).

  • How do I configure emacs speedbar for C# mode?

    - by Alex B
I'm using emacs with C# Mode and when I turn on the speedbar, no files show up by default. I can choose "show all files" on the speedbar mode, but then every .cs file shows up with a '[?]' next to the name. How do I properly configure speedbar so it shows up with .cs files by default? How do I get the '[+]' next to each file so I can navigate inside the file?

I'm sure it's to spec, but it just seems counter intuitive to me...

  • Java technologies for web-development.

    - by Alex
Hello. I'm PHP-programmer, but I'm extremely interested in learning Java. So I decided to change speciality from PHP to Java. At the moment I have an opportunity to try to make quite simple web-application (it should contain 2-3 forms, several pages with information from the database and authorization module) and also I have a chance to choose any technology I want. Besides I have about 3 months for this task. I've decided to develop site with Java technologies for the purpose of studying. I've already read a book about Java ("Java2 Complete Reference" by P.Naughton) and currently I'm reading "Thinking in Java" by B.Eckel. I clearly understand it's not enough for efficient development, but I want, at least, to try. I would be very appreciated for the advises, which framework (for example) or technology to choose (Spring, Grails etc.) and what primary aspects and technologies of Java should I pay attention to? Thank you in advance.
