• Ubuntu not saving files and settings when running from flash drive

  How can I make Ubuntu run completely off of a flash drive? I have downloaded Ubuntu onto a 4gb flash drive but no changes I make are saved between sessions. I want to be able to run and save everything I do to the flash drive. I don't want it interfering with my hard drive at all. I just want to be able to plug my flash drive in the computer boot Ubuntu, and for it to save my changes. E.g. When I install Google Chrome, when I reboot it isn't there.

• A peculiar issue with nm-applet

  There is a somewhat strange error that I've noticed with my gnome sessions. It's not a problem that causes a lot of trouble, but at times it becomes annoying. Anyway, here it is: when I fire up gnome-session-fallback (which is the main one I use), the network applet doesn't run with root permission. Here is what it looks like http://i.imgur.com/8kc7Vrd.jpg . On the other hand, here is what the regular gnome session looks like http://i.imgur.com/wfkkE3E.jpg . From the regular session I can easy edit and add networks, but from fallback session I cannot add/edit anything, or turn off/on the wireless or networking. Any ideas?

  Java2Days 2012 was held in Sofia, Bulgaria on October 25-26. This was the third installment of the premier Java conference for the Balkan region, having three separate tracks for Java, the Cloud and Mobile. It attracted over a thousand enthusiastic, bright young developers and a number of world class speakers. There were no less than three full-house sessions on Java EE/GlassFish - one on Java EE 7, one on Domain-Driven Design using Java EE 6 and one on JSR 356/WebSocket. • What should be stored in UserContext?

  From my general understanding I believe UserContext for a web application is supposed to hold user authentication and authorization (user roles) information. As part of user roles, there are definitions on who can access what data and accordingly the corresponding reference data is loaded into the UserContext as well. Is this a good practice to load and use reference data from UserContext? Does this have any impact with the number of sessions vs size of data it is holding inside JVM? I am thinking we use UserContext only for authentication and authorization but load the reference data from cache on demand and use it if required.

• Session locked, Kubuntu 12.10

  After leaving my laptop for a while, my Kubuntu session closed. (I'm not sure which of the various timeout criteria caused it.) So I got a screen that said my session was locked and I needed to provide my password to unlock it. That's a nuisance, not a big problem, but I'd like to fix it so timed-out sessions don't lock the session. I assume there's something in System Settings to disable the lockout -- but where? I looked in Power Management and found a setting "Lock screen on resume", but it's unchecked. Is this possibly a bug?

  While this blog is mostly devoted to GlassFish, you may be interested in the Oracle WebLogic Server 12c announcement scheduled for December 1st, 2011. The launch event is called "Introducing Oracle WebLogic Server 12c, the #1 Application Server Across Conventional and Cloud Environments" and will be split into Executive Overview and Developer Deep Dive sessions. • SQLBits 9 goes to Liverpool

  SQLBits 9 has now been announced as 29th September to 1st October 2011 at the Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool. This will follow the now familiar three day format, a training day, and two full days of concurrent sessions. Saturday 1st October will of course be the free community day. Despite growing the event quite dramatically over the past four years, this is something we are all very proud to have maintained and is a key factor when planning the events.
