I am often working in a process in the Terminal and I've set some variables and used cd and so forth. Then I'd like to open another Terminal window from there. Is there any way to do this?
My SimFinger window is in the top left of my screen and I can't move it. How can I move it so I can see the top of the iPhone?

The new emacs23 gives me
("Window width 0 too small (after splitting)"))
whenever I load ECB or tabbar. Seems to be introduces after updating from Kubuntu intrepid to jaunty. Any hint how to solve this?
Hi! I was wandering if it's possible to run an Ubuntu virtual machine using VirtualBox in background, I mean, without any window open.
The idea is to conect via SSH to the linux host, that would be running in background.
Have you ever done somenthing like this? Is it possible?
Thanks!
On Windows I use an AutoHotKey script to tile the active window to the left half of the screen, the right half, or a few other options.
Does Ubuntu/Gnome have a program that would allow me to do that?
If not, do you have an idea how to create this programmatically, or at least can point me to a resource?
On my old computer when you drag a window around, it seems to be cut up (like what you'd see in remote desktop on a slow connection) and its becoming really annoying.
A few weeks when I was transferring data from it to my new laptop and it was working fine then however when I started it a few minutes ago this issue occurred.
I tried restarting several time with no luck.
OS: Windows XP Professional
Graphics Card: nVidia 9600GT
I need to write a batch program to end all MS office communicator tasks with window titles (usually ending with pattern "- Conversation" .
I tried
taskkill /FI "WINDOWTITLE eq *Conversation" /IM communicator.exe
but the wildcard pattern starting with a '*' does not seem to work. Gives the folowing error
ERROR: The search filter cannot be recognized.
any suggestions for a workaround would be greatly appreciated!

In the Excel VBE, the Find Dialog box (CTRL-F) pops up half off screen at the bottom of screen. How do I control the Find window so it positions itself higher up on the screen ?
Let's say you open two files through a vertical split..
vim -O 1 2
Now how would I split this window horizontally across both of the vertical windows? So this is what a :vsplit looks like:
-----------------

| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
-----------------
I want the end result to look like
-----------------

In XP, to ensure a folder opened in a new window, I held down CTRL when I opened (by mouse or keyboard) the folder.
This action is so ingrained to me, I pretty much don't even realise I'm doing it at a conscious level.
Unfortunately, this action apparently hasn't made it to Vista. Is there a new way to do this, or am I just missing something obvious?
The problem is, both Firefox and Internet Explorer have "Open in New Tab" as the second option.
This has become muscle memory for me by now, to the point that I don't use as often as I want to, solely because I can't open a page in a new tab without thinking about it.
Is there a way to switch the position of "Open Link in new tab" and "Open link in new window", so that I can resume browsing as normal, or am I cursed by this user interface design nightmare by Google?

In Windows 7, in most applications, when an application is maximized...I can "tear" the window (grab the title bar and drag) from it's maximized size and off the top of the screen and then I can drag it to wherever...but when Excel is maximized I do not have that functionality...Is there some trick to adding this functionality for Excel 2007...I can do it with Word 2007 so it doesn't appear to be Office itself. The machine is a Dell Latitude D820 with the Nvidia Quadro NVS 110M video card...running the latest video drivers...
Is there a way to forcibly terminate an SSH session in PuTTY, short of closing the PuTTY window?
For example, in OpenSSH, I can use the ~. escape sequence to kill the connection.
This is useful when the SSH session stops responding for some reason, but I don't want to lose any of my current session-specific settings. In that case, I'd like to kill the session and then use Restart Session to reconnect.
Whenever I start up my laptop with Xubuntu on it, a Terminal window opens and just sits in the taskbar - as though I opened it myself.
Anyone know if there's some sort of list of applications which open at boot time. Maybe Terminal got on that list somehow?
I'm looking for a Linux utility that allows me to define arbitrary keyboard shortcuts that will move the frontmost window to a specific absolute position on-screen, depending on the shortcut.
An OSX utility which does this is Breeze (http://autumnapps.com/breeze/ ) -- Is there a Linux equivalent?
Whenever I try to click a message in Outlook 2003 or do "New Message" I get a Save As file window and the program stops responding.
This also happens when I try to open Word files.
I've tried rebooting and I've tried to go through the repair process on the Office install disk.
Does anyone know how to open a document in a new window instead of a new tab in Lotus Symphony? I would like to compare two spreadsheets and can not figure out a way to display them side by side. I am using v1.3.0 on a Mac. Thanks!
I have a Windows 7 computer which have a strange behavior: when preview is enabled in explorer, I double-click on any Word document, Word is launched, the document is loaded, and immediatly explorer is in the foreground window (so Word is in the background). The whole process take less than one second.
Only with Word. Not Excel or anything.
Only on one computer (5 others are identical and installed the same day).
