• Is it possible to use SQL XML to insert, and get output from each record?

  I would like to perform a SQL XML insert (on MSSQL), and in this case I need to insert a list of files into the DB (this is simple enough). However, there's an auto generated PK column (ID), and I need the ID for each newly created filename without performing a 2nd query. Is this possible? I guess it doesn't matter if the result is/isn't XML, but the input certainly has to be.

• python: equivalent to Javascript "||" to override non-truthful value

  In Javascript I can do this: function A(x) { return x || 3; } This returns 3 if x is a "non-truthful" value like 0, null, false, and it returns x otherwise. This is useful for empty arguments, e.g. I can do A() and it will evaluate as 3. Does Python have an equivalent? I guess I could make one out of the ternary operator a if b else c but was wondering what people use for this.

  What is the most painful programming mistake you have done and what lesson you have learn after? I guess mine was making a release to production on the development code which was not tested yet. The lesson-learned: Delete any projects that can trigger a release on the live application from CCTray. I only add them when a release to production is necessary since then. And once I am done, I delete them from my project lists.

So, return should be a unary operator that can also take in brackets... pretty much like unary minus: -5 and -(5), both are okay. Is that what it is - a unary operator?

  I found this in some code examples while googling : $sql = 'INSERT INTO users (username,passwordHash) VALUES (?,?)'; it's new to me, but I would guess that it a substitution method and equivalent to $sql = "INSERT INTO users (username,passwordHash) VALUES ($username,$passwordHash)";` or $sql = 'INSERT INTO users (username,passwordHash) VALUES (' . $username . ',' . $passwordHash . ')';` would that be correct? Is it an actual PHP syntax, or was he just trying to simplify his example?

  I'm implementing serial key functionality in my application. User needs to enter at least 64bit number in order to register the application. Because typing number like 9,223,372,036,854,775,807 will take a while I want to compress it a bit. The first guess was to code this number hexadecimally but it still is quite long (0x7FFF FFFF FFFF FFFF). Is there any standard method in .NET to code this number alphanumerically using for example: digits, upper-case and lower-case characters?

• 301 redirects in .htaccess on apache

  I guess this should be straightforward but my host got me to switch server from zeus to apache following which the .htaccess file with existing individual 301 redirects failed to work causing an internal server error, so have commented them out for the time being. Could someone explain how to set these up to work in their new apache context?   I have a script that is copying a folder that contains a couple sub folders. The original that it is copying from is part of an SVN folder, so it is copying those ".svn" folders as well. I want to remove those from the new destination, my best guess was: rm -Rf dir/*.svn Which doesn't work, is there a way to do this or do I need to manually go into each folder to delete it?

• Should I learn a operating system specific language or something like Java?

Using jQuery is not always an option (or even a want) which can make understanding the examples of javascript solutions written in jQuery hard.   Hi, I have a Grails (GAnt) script with the following target: includeTargets << grailsScript("_GrailsInit") includeTargets << grailsScript("_GrailsPlugins" target('default': "Does something awesome!") { depends(updatePluginsList) // Implementation omitted } Since upgrading to Grails 1.3.1, when I run this I get the error groovy.lang.MissingPropertyException: No such property: updatePluginsList for class: So it appears that the target updatePluginsList has disappeared. This target used to be provided by Grails, so I guess it's either been removed or renamed in a recent release? Thanks, Don
