• How to improve battery life on a HP Pavilion dv6?

  I apologise if this question is too similar to the numerous others already asked, but I'm a beginner and I really need your help. So...I've installed Ubuntu 12.10 a few days ago and I have only been able to get up to one hour of battery life. When running Windows 7 I get up to 3-4 hours. My screen is ultra bright, even tough the screen brightness is set to the minimum (I installed xcalib to dim my screen, but it doesn't improve the battery life) I read about Jupiter and installed it, but it doesn't have a noticeable effect. • Dual display setup - only one displayed after logon

  During boot process my desktop shows both Monitors, but after log I only get one. I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 When I go into Displays its still only shows on Monitor. • Why do packages fail to install from command line

  Every once in a while I can't install packages in Ubuntu 11.04. I'll try to run the software center and it and it will pop up then disappear. If I call it from the command line it says it seg-faults. And then trying to install anything from the command line I get this: sudo apt-get install pdftk Reading package lists... Done And thats all I get for anything I try. Usually restarting fixes the problem but its very annoying.

• Limiting what resumes computer from suspend

  I'm having a ton of trouble getting Suspend to work with my laptop. I want to start using Ubuntu but this is a pretty important aspect since I take my laptop with me everywhere. Anyways, I wanted to narrow down the possible problem with my laptop. What happens is that when I suspend my computer, within seconds, it just boots back up. I have changed /proc/acpi/wakeup to where everything is disabled but that did nothing. Is there a way where I can disable every feature from waking up the laptop except the power button?

• How can I copy a file from one partition to another?

  I started with linux a year ago. Few weeks ago it was my idea to install the efi stubloader. I used an LiveCd to freshly install ubuntu 12.10, and studied the articles of www.rodsbooks.com inside out. The problem I am facing is that few files need to be copied from sda2 (Ext) to sda1 (fat32). Silly, that should not be difficullt, but I can not find a way to do it...(in a way I understand it)? Anyboddy? If you have installed a EFI stubloader with reFind or efibootmgr,...please help me.

• update-grub is setting a wrong linux root partition

  Initially, Ubuntu was installed on another partition (sda5 or sda4). At some point I did manually move the root partition to sda2. Now, the problem is that whenever a new kernel is installed, the automatic regeneration of the menu.lst is using the OLD Linux partition. So I have to manually change in menu.lst the lines : root (hd0,5) into root (hd0,1) How can I configure update-grub to automatically generate menu.lst with the current Linux root partition? I assume that the (hd0,5) was written somewhere at installation, but I couldn't find it.

• 12.04 + Alienware M11x R2 + Bumblebee 3.0 = low resolution only

  I had a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 on my Alienware M11x, and it worked with the native monitor resolution of 1366x768. In trying to get the Optimus chipset working, I installed Bumblebee 3.0. Now, I am only offered 640x480 for my monitor resolution. Graphically, Unity 3D appears to be working now, instead of the Unity 2D I had before, so something went right, but I don't know how I can get it to offer me any higher resolutions than 640x480. I've looked up many pages that address this topic, but nothing that I've seen suggested has worked. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bumblebee/stable sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install bumblebee-nvidia was the latest thing I tried. I've tried some variants of this, I've been sure to uninstall nvidia drivers prior to reinstalling Bumblebee and various video drivers. Does anyone have any clue as to how I can get back to native resolution?

Recently I've been trying to install utorrent, which I already was able to do so, but I need the port 8080 free to use run tomcat/glassfish and on port 80 php. Briefly, how can I change utorrent port from 8080 to another one? I've been trying to find a solution for this issue for about 3 days now, I saw some solutions, such as create a utserver.config, but I have no clue in how to use it or config it by terminal or on properties, that is something hardly explained by anyone. • 12.04 gnome shell broken after updates

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04, and using gnome shell. I've had my machine running for the last few days, and I've been installing updates as the update manager bugs me. I just rebooted, and now gnome won't start. I can use gnome classic and unity, but gnome 3 isn't working at all. When I log in, the screen is black for maybe 20 seconds, but the cursor shows. Then, my wallpaper, but nothing else shows up. I can get a terminal with ctrl+alt+t, and I tried to run gnome-shell, but it segfaulted.

• Setting folder permission so it isn't deletable, but everything else is allowed

  I want to set permissions to a folder such that, when I'm normally logged in (meaning not as root), this folder isn't deletable, but I can still change the name of this folder and move in around in my system ? IS this possible and if yes, how to set the permission ? I already tried different combinations for the permissions but couldn't figure out how to do it. Also (side question), if some folder hast some permission set and I copy this folder, along with its contents (assuming I am allowed to read it) to a memory, are these permission preserved ? I suppose not, since under Windows I could delete the folder on the stick, even if under Ubuntu it isn't allowed to delete it...

  Downloaded 12.04.2. Made CD. Machine boots from CD as expected. Installed onto HD. Upon reboot, "Read error" message appears. Upon booting from CD, the HD appears as expected: One partition for Ubuntu, taking up about 12 gig, the rest empty. Lather, rinse, repeat five times.   I have been recently trying to find a solution for this on the web but did not find something useful or accurate for Ubuntu 11.10. I also consulted the NVIDIA help, but things there did not work for me. I installed the additional drivers from system settings but they are not fully compatible with my GeForce 6200. First I tried finding how to stop the X server. I succeeded, but another problem was the nouveau kernel. This is really frustrating. And I would like to add a tray-icon for it so users can control the application window and recording from it. Adding a tray icon: I have planned to use the GtkStatusIcon class for this task. • Wobbly windows not working in compiz for 12.04

  I'm very new at Ubuntu and am still trying to figure everything out. I recently downloaded Compiz settings manager and enabled wobbly windows. Nothing. So I uninstalled it and re-installed it and still, nothing. I've ran all the updates and updated the graphics drivers and I still have nothing. I have a Sony Vaio with a Intel® Core™2 CPU T5500 @ 1.66GHz × 2 . Its a 2009 computer, so I think it should be able to work just fine. Please help! • No panels at all after upgrading from 10.04 to 12.04

  After upgrading to 12.4 from 10.4 on an AMD64 the situation is as follows: After booting I see the Xubuntu logo splash screen and when I log in I get an error that there is a system crash somewhere (it suggest to click on the notification icon, but no info appears then). FInally I can only see my initial 10.04 Desktop but I have no panels at all, so I can only click on my Desktop objects. Question: Will a clean re intall solve the problem? In such case will my multi partition configuration (Vista+XP+ubuntu partitions) be affected?

  I just installed the latest version of Ubuntu, I think it was 13. Something. Anyway I got it running and now I've been trying to connect to my wifi. No matter where I go I don't see an option for wifi. I looked on the computer and found some commands to use in terminal to run a scan for wifi networks but all of them returned the error "interface doesn't support scanning" if anyone could help that would be great...I can't do anything without wifi! Also I'm new to this so if you could give step by step directions that would help a lot. Thanks!

• How to setup complete file access and control on a network

  I have a media server running ubuntu 12.04 and I want it setup so that any PC on the network (windows etc) has complete access to all files, folders etc with read, write, edit, copy to, copy from permissions. No need for security (IE no password or user name, just select it on the network and start editing). I have samba installed and personal file sharing is enabled but my windows PC cannot see it on the network. I already set up another server as I described but unfortunately I can't remember how or where I found the guides for it. Any on know of a guide that covers what I want?

• why is the video freezing all the time on youtube yet the audio plays ok throughout?

  this is just a fresh install of ubuntu 12.04 . I tried it a few years ago when it was on 7.04 and had a lot of issues,then my pc broke and ive never tried it again until tonight. Everything seems to be working well except videos on youtube either wont play at all or freeze while the audio keeps going as normal. Is this a common issue thats gonna be fairly easy to fix or is it something to do with my video card?(ati radeon2100).   I'm planning to buy a new PC and I am thinking about using an SSD as the main disk. I'd also use a standard spinning disk and I'd mount it to /home. To the people already using such a setup: does this induce a practical, noticeable enhancement in performance? I think that access times, rather than transfer rates, are the more useful feature of SSD's. I would like to know if they have a noticeable effect on a desktop installation of Ubuntu.   I use Ubuntu 12.04. I am already using Remmina both with RDP and VNC connections for several servers. For one of my servers I have a problem to login after login window opens. The server is Windows 2008 R2. The screen for entering user and password comes but does not accept the password. I guess the problem is with language but password does not contain any problematic letter except a $ sign. When connecting from Windows 7 there is no problem.

  I have a dual graphics card: intel 4000 and nvidia 630m... I installed bumblebee and intel drivers from their website. I thought the brightness problem will be solved by installing these drivers. But, brightness works only for two steps: that is, dim, medium, high... But, it doesn't increase step wise. Can you please help me sort this problem? • Desktop not showing after playing with compiz

  Having successfully installed Ubuntu 11.04 I decided to look into improving look and feel of the unity desktop. I could find no option to introduce any nice effects with the standard install, but a google session suggested Compiz would do the job. I installed this and selected the "Wobbly windows" option and this worked fine. After a while I thought I'd try some of the other available effects (can't remember which but may have been cube desktop) but this resulted in no windows showing at all. I now have just blank wall paper with no icons or menus. There are no error messages and right clicking the desktop produces a small context menu but nothing else. Rebooting brings me back to a blank desktop with just wallpaper. I do not know where to start.
