  • How can I increase Emacs key repeat rate in OS X Mountain Lion

    - by Rob Jones
Emacs does not seem to respect the OS's key repeat rate. I'm using emacs in the terminal. I've set the repeat rate to as fast as possible by directly editing the settings in the following file (I restarted after making the change): open ~/Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist The rest of the system observes the repeat rate. The terminal works as expected, as does vim. But, when I use emacs I still get the annoyingly slow repeat rate.

  • How to securly join two networks together over the Internet?

    - by Pyrolistical
Let's say there are two locations. Both locations have their own fast Internet connections. How do you join these two networks together such that every computer can see every other computer? Do you need a domain controller, or can you do this with workgroups? EDIT The obvious solution seems to be VPN, but can VPN be implemented on the routers only? Can the computers on the network be configuration free?

  • Can someone find me a reference to this quote?

    - by Robot
I'm looking for a reasonable reference to a known software personality who said something along the lines "make sure your software runs the most common cases fast/easy but all cases are possible". I'm sure there are many 80/20 quotes, so I'm looking for the most famous that gets that point across. -Robot

  • I need a TSE (The Semware Editor) replacement for Windows / Linux / OS X / Solaris (one to edit them

    - by lexu
My text and programmers editor of choice, when working on a windows box is TSE (The Semware Editor). It is small, it is fast, it is configurabel, and since I've used it (and it's predecessor QEdit) for over twenty years, my fingers can do the editing on autopilot, while the brain is busy with syntax and design. Do you know of a similar editor preferably one that runs on Windows, Linux and OS X (and Solaris ..) I've tried to use VIM (I know how to use VI even longer thant TSE) but it doesn't feel right.

  • Get WebDav uploading progress and status (Linux, davfs2)

    - by Hnatt
I am using WebDAV on Linux box with davfs2 1.4.6. When I copy a file to a mounted WebDAV service, it is goes rather fast, just like a regular local drive operation. And it actually is, because the file is first copied to ~/.davf2/cache directory. But how do I know that uploading is finished and where do I see current progress? Is there a way to know that uploading failed due to lack of space or file size restrictions?

  • How to install Reddit Open Source on a web server

    - by Shubz
I have been playing around with the Reddit open source software and have been getting no where fast. I was wondering if anybody can instruct me on how to install the software on a web server. I know how to install normal php scripts etc, but I've never installed a software such as a python or rails script before. I'm not very good with commands but I know how to run them. If that makes sense. Thanks!

  • Why is preserving the pitch in audio playback (allegedly) less performant?

    - by Markus Unterwaditzer
In VLC for Android, i discovered an option to preserve the pitch during faster-than-normal playback: The "requires a fast device" obviously implies that faster playback is more performant when the pitch is changed too. Why is that so? What i've tried: Before posting this question i did some shallow research through Google. According to Wikipedia, there are several methods for faster playback of audio, the "simplest" one (Resampling) changes the pitch.

  • USB sticks optimized for OS booting and virus removal [closed]

    - by Rupert
I'm looking to buy some usb sticks which will mainly be used in tech support for the purposes of removing viruses and booting up various OS's. Therefore, I am looking for the following features: Write protected switch (so that they may be safely plugged in to potentially infected machines) As fast as possible (so that loading, for example, a windows recovery, doesn't take forever) At least 4GB in size Any other features that might be useful for the above purpose Price is no object but, of course, the cheaper the better.

  • Windows XP slow directory move

    - by maaartinus
When I move a directory containing 900 MB in 4k files to another directory in the same filesystem, it takes nearly 1 minute and I hear the disk working. It's NTFS on Windows XP, the disk is quite fast (ST3100015 28AS) and works fine according to CrystalMark. I switched the antivirus off, and there's nothing else running (there's a lot of processes, but none doing any work). WTF is it doing instead of changing two directory entries?

  • Shopping for a very compact and powerful workstation [closed]

    - by qdot
I'm on the market for something small, size of an Mac Mini, could be heavier, that packs a lot of compute power - goal is to have a fast, known development machine at customer's site, but still easier to fly with than desktop-replacement laptops. If Mac Mini came with a quad-core i7, it would be my likely choice. Any other manufacturers to look at? Or perhaps a Mini can be upgraded beyond official specs?

  • Default user profile getting filled with temp ie files

    - by Christoffer
I have several Windows Server 2003 Terminal servers to service our domain users. Sometimes the Default User profile (C:\Documents and Settings\Default User) gets filled with tempoary internet files, so when a new user logs in, he gets a 1GB profile (instead of 20MB) that fills up the server fast. Why is it the default user profile gets filled up with files like that, by who and how do i prevent this?

  • Ways to make USB Firefox faster

    - by MichaelKay
I have several laptops so I use a USB key version of Firefox to keep my environment as I move around. I followed the suggestions offered on the Firefox web site (turn off the cache and history etc.) and its better but still much slower than the normal version. Other than buying a new, super fast flux-capacitor based USB key, what other tips and tricks can I use?

  • Cheap web hosting that supports php/mysql

    - by Cortopasta
Does anyone know where I can find web hosting that supports php/mysql? I'm just using it to practice updating/changing live web sites, and to run code in an environment other than my XAMP stack on my thumb drive. It doesn't need to be fast or able to use a lot of bandwith, just somewhere I can play with code to sharpen my skill set
