I'm trying to connect to a server at work which is run on a Mac but I have a PC (windows 7) at home. I have path to connect in the format of afp://server.com/files. Is there a client that I need to install on my PC that I can use to login?
Thanks,
Paul
I'm wanting to control my laptop from my desktop.
I've been doing this with VNC (PC desktop to Macbook pro) - but I want to remove the 'viewing' aspect of it on my desktop. I.e. I don't want to have the viewing screen on the desktop.. but be able to control the mouse/keyboard via VNC.
Is this possible?
I'm using realVNC viewer and connecting to the default in-built VNC server on Mac OS X Lion.
Cheers for any help.
Hi,
How can I check what are the USB devices I currently have hooked up to my mac?
I went to the "System Profiler" and click on USB.
It shows built in devices but doesn't seem like it shows devices like my external mouse etc?
Thanks,
Tee
I have been battling for a week now to get my Mac (Mountain Lion) to authenticate on my home network's OpenLDAP and Samba. From several sources, like the Ubuntu community docs, and other blogs, and after a hell of a lot of trial and error and piecing things together, I have created a samba.ldif that will pass the smbldap-populate when combined with apple.ldif and I have a fully functional OpenLDAP server and a Samba PDC that uses LDAP to authenticate the OS X Machine.
The problem is that when I login, the home directory is not created or pulled from the server. I get the following in system.log
Sep 21 06:09:15 Sams-MacBook-Pro.local SecurityAgent[265]: User info context values set for sam

All that's great and good and I authenticate. Then I get
CFPreferences: user home directory for user kCFPreferencesCurrentUser at
/Network/Servers/172.17.148.186/home/sam is unavailable.
User domains will be volatile.
Failed looking up user domain root; url='file://localhost/Network/Servers/172.17.148.186/home/sam/'
path=/Network/Servers/172.17.148.186/home/sam/ err=-43 uid=9000 euid=9000
If you're wondering where /Network/Servers/IP/home/sam comes from, it's from a couple of blogs that said the OpenLDAP attribute apple-user-homeDirectory should have that value and the NFSHomeDirectory on the mac should point to apple-user-homeDirectory
I also set the attr apple-user-homeurl to
<home_dir><url>smb://172.17.148.186/sam/</url><path></path></home_dir>
which I found on this forum.
Any help is appreciated, because I'm banging my head against the wall at this point.
By the way, I intend to create a blog on my vps just for this, and create an install script in python that people can download so no one has to go through what I've had to go through this week :)
After some sleep I am going to try to login from a windows machine and report back here.
Thanks
Sam
I'm trying to learn network intrusion detection. When I try to launch Snort, in IDS mode, I get this message (I'm running Mac OS X):
Initializing Network Interface en1
ERROR: OpenPcap() FSM compilation failed:

How can I fix this problem?
Hi, I'm looking for a professional CD burning software which can not only burn music, but fix audio fades between songs and other features for professional mastering like Sony CD Architect available only for Windows.
The best should it also support FLAC lossless format, but it's not foundamental.
Does someone know some alternative on Mac?
Anyone know of a Mac program that has the same (or very similar) functionality as TortoiseSVN, which is for Windows? I'm looking for something that integrates with Finder.
I'd like to permanently see a clickable list of windows I have open, in the same way that the taskbar allows in Windows. Can I do this on Mac?
Some details:
i have many virtual desktops (spaces), so often a single application has windows on many of them.
I often have multiple windows of each application, such as the terminal or browser, on the same virtual desktop
I have multiple monitors, if it matters.
Edit: When I say 'permanently see a clickable list of windows I have open' I mean that I want to see every window I have open, and I'd like to be able to click on each one to open that window. I'm not looking for the newer behaviour where tasks are clustered by application.
I'm trying to setup a VPN server on a linux server (Gentoo). I've tired to setup OpenVPN using a PSK but I didn't found any way to configure it on Snow Leopard.
Is OpenVPN a good solution ? If so, how to configure it to make it work with Mac OS x native VPN client ?
Is there any way I can specify an additional Applications directory. I basically want to keep the applications that come with Mac OS X in the default Applications directory, but, install all third-party software to a different directory which is in a separate partition. I want to retain all advantages of the actual Applications directory such as the one where copying files from a .dmg to the Applications folder installs software.
I need a German-Danish and/or Danish-German dictionary. I have tried searching Google, but there's really not many dictionaries out there for Mac OS X it seems.
Do you know of any?
I don't care if it's freeware or not. I'm willing to buy a professional dictionary if I have to.
Hi guys,
I've created a text file from an application that I developed.
When I send the text file to a SYSTEM Validation, they (3rd Party System) say that the file is invalid and that the file contains 3 characters in the beginning of the file that are not allowed as well special characters are not correct.
They also say I need to use either ISO 8859-1 or PC850
Well, I'm using NotePad++ and I can't see that at all!
What is the best text file reader for this kinda problems?
EDITED
I also have a MAC and just a thought I remembered opening in TextMate ... WOW!
Now I know what they are talking about!
How can I have the same in Windows?
Hey Folks,
I'm curious as to the level of support Novell OES 2 has for mac os x. Particularly filesharing and also groupwise.
What resources are there that address the issue?
Thanks,
Matt Delves
My 250GB I/O Magic USB external hard-drive randomly disconnects / ejects from the computer after between 2-30 minutes of use. When this happens, the blinking activity light on the front of the hdd turns off; however, the disks can still be heard spinning. Unplugging & replugging in the USB does not reconnect the device and the activity light remains unlit. The only way to continue using it is to flip off then on the power switch of the hdd.
The hard-drive was formatted with MBR partition table and 2 NTFS volumes. I recently tried switching to GUID with two Mac OS Extended (Journaled), but the problem remains.
This error occurs with my new Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard as well as with my DELL E520 with Windows 7 Ultimate.
Is there a way to force Mac OSX to take screengrabs with the sRGB color space instead of Color LCD? Currently I have to switch to sRGB in Displays, take a snap and then switch back.
I have a corrupt TrueCrypt volume. When I try to mount it, the password is fine but I get an error: hdiutil attach failed no mountable file systems
I read a post that says you can try to recover the volume, but I have to open it first to try to recover it. I just need to open it without TrueCrypt trying to mount it too, so I can use that partition in a data recovery program. Also it's just an image file volume.
I am using the Mac version, and I have setup an alias for the truecrypt shell command, but I'm not sure how to enter the syntax! Please help.
thank you! T

I'm still using 2.8.0.722 on my Mac while a friend has upgraded to 2.8.0.851
The newer version on her computer has pop-up bubbles for every chat message when the chat window is minimized. Neither of us are able to find where to disable this feature. The difficulty arises when we minimize a chat window, but the bubbles continue to show everything the other person is typing, even when one of our kids is with us for a moment looking at something else on the screen.
We have checked all throughout the Preferences settings, most notably the privacy and chat areas, to no avail. Ultimately we would like to disable these chat pop-up bubbles so that when a chat window is minimized, that conversation and all incoming messages will remain private until we restore that chat box to be viewable on the screen again.
Thanks!
Greg
Hi, I'm using subclipse on mac.
I did a checkout using a temp username and password yesterday.
Now that I have a new username and password, how can I change my credentials without having to delete my checkout and recheckout?
Thank you,
Tee
I have a local share with my VMware development server and I'm finding that when I create new files via Mac OS X, they are created under root instead of jacob.
Which is weird because when I do the connect to server thing I'm explicit about the user being jacob i.e.

Suggestions?
I've got a 24" 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo iMac. It's about 18 months old, though I can't specifically remember when I bought it. It has a Displayport Mini-DVI socket on the back, and currently I have that linked to a DVI adaptor driving a Philips 20" widescreen monitor in portrait mode (awesome for browsing).
I have another, identical Philips monitor and wondered if there was a way of connecting that to the iMac too. Is there such a thing as a DisplayPort Mini-DVI to dual-DVIs adaptor?
Can this iMac's graphics card even drive such a set-up? The graphics chipset in the iMac is reported as ATI Radeon HS2600, 256 MB.
The main iMac display is 1920x1200 and the Philips display is 1050x1680 (@60Hz, rotated 90 degrees). The third screen would be another 1050x1680 and ideally I'd have it portrait again, too.
EDIT: Please let this question stand - it's not a dupe. The current Mac laptops use 'Mini Displayport' connectors, which are not the same as DisplayPort Mini-DVI connectors.
I have placed too many icons in my dock.
there is by default a separator in dock between applications & trash.
I want to add more separators in my dock - for grouping purpose.
say for example
finder, preview, itunes, system pref.,activity monitor FOR Mac osx group
Mozilla, safari - for Browsing group
Odesk, skype, ipmessanger, adium, team viewer for communication
Means, I just want to add separator to identify them very quickly.
Is it possible ? if yes - how ?
Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge.

On Linux you can create any layout you wish by editing the appropriate ASCII configuration files. On Windows the keyboard layout definitions are binary. Is there any tool that can create these binary keyboard layout configuration files?
I grew up on the Macintosh international keyboard layout, which used the option key extensively, and now I would like to use the same layout on Windows.
On Linux this Mac international keyboard layout exists for both the console as well as for X.Org. On Windows, the most similar layout is US International, which is not the same.
