Hi, I have an Ubuntu workstation with Firefox always open on a (autorefreshing) web page protected by basic auth.
At startup, I have autologin and automatic Firefox start on the page and I have saved the basic auth credentials.
I'd like to confirm in some automated way the username/password dialog box which pops up on the first opening of the page, or I'd like to know if there's any hack to avoid this dialog box.
I tried setting the homepage to http://username%3Apassword@myserver/mypage put that doesn't stop confirmation dialog boxes.
I have done a fresh install of Ubuntu Server version 12.04 and am trying to install a dhcp server package using the following command:
sudo apt-get install dhcp3-server
However I get this:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package dhcp3-server
Can someone tell me how to install this package on my server?
Thanks,
Alex.
Note:
uname -a
2.6.28-16-generic
cat /etc/issue
Ubuntu 9.04 \n \l
I have disabled iwl3945:
cat /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf | tail -3
blacklist iwl3945
blacklist mac8021
Question:
How can I use iwp3945 instead?
Since to ubuntu 10.04 upgrade move of my drop-down menus have been dark-on-dark text, which becomes readable (changed background) when selected. I don't know what's causing this but it's a problem on Ambience and Radiance both. Any hints?
Is it possible to get the windows 7 window behavior in ubuntu?
The specific part I'm talking about is the gestures thing where you can throw your window to one side and have it resize to take up that side, or to the top and have it maximize.
I am wondering will it affect my server if I upgrade to the latest version. Anything I should be careful about?
Also, im wondering what is an intelligent way to update a ubuntu server normally. Would you update every week for instance? also would you have lots of errors to handle with scripting systems like perl/cpan modules etc, since these are always tough to install anyway with compatibility issues?
Cheers,
K
I'm currently running Windows XP, but have ordered Windows 7. I want to keep Windows XP on a separate partition, and install Ubuntu as well.
In which order should I install the OSs, and is there anything differing from an ordinary single-system install I should keep in mind? For example, does the order of partition make any difference? If I want to have the system drive as "C:" drive in both Win XP and Win 7, what should I do?

Does Ubuntu/Gnome have a program that would allow me to do that?
If not, do you have an idea how to create this programmatically, or at least can point me to a resource?
Hi, I'm running ubuntu 9.10 which has gcc4 (libstdc++6) installed, and I need to install a program that requires libstdc++5 that comes with gcc3. I don't see gcc-3 listed when I run "apt-cache search" so:
Is it necessary to install gcc-3 to achieve libstdc++5 ? If so where can I get it ?
Is there a way to install just libstdc++5
Would a soft link to libstdc++6 do or is it not recommended ?
Thanks
I am using a BlueProton USB wireless network adapter and an Ubuntu 9.10 machine and the machine says that it is connected to the internet but it won't see other machines/devices on the local network and only a few websites work.
i have been installed ubuntu server 11.10 and i doesn't specify the domain name during the installation
but after i have been edit /ete/resolve.conf with my dns servers which run windows server the dns can't recognise my server name .
then i installed likewise-open but that doesn't solve the problem and make some problems with ftp .
can someone help me please to join this server to the dns .
thanks in advance .
I created a partition on USB harddisk in windows and it reports to be an NTFS partition.
Yet in ubuntu 9.10 fdisk says it a FAT16 partition. If I mount with -t ntfs I see nothing, but if I mount without it I see all the files.
Can anyone tell me whats going on here?
Windows computer disk management definately says its NTFS, and a quick look at the raw data suggests it is NTFS, as I know the FAT16 very well.

I am using Ubuntu Server to host an Intranet website with Apache and was wondering if it was possible to change the web site's domain name so I don't have to enter the IP address to access the site.
Thanks in advance!
I am trying to get my locally assigned IP address from Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with ifconfig and what I'm getting is my external IP address (in other words, it's the same IP I see on whatismyip.com)
When running ifconfig eth0, inet addr shows my external IP address instead of the local address.
How do I get my local IP address ?
Hi all,
I get a cpgz file when trying to extract the contents of a file created on an ubuntu system.
Tried with 7zip, rar, zip, tar, nothing works... I really need to get this to work, so if somebody had a lead or a solution, that would be great !
