• Simple Windows.Forms binding is failing using framework 4.0.

- by jyoung
This works under the .net framework 3.5 client. This fails under the .net framework 4.0 client. Was I doing something that was illegal under 3.5 but just happened to work, or is this a bug? Note that in my project 'PropInt' does not raise change events so using ctx[obj1.PropObj2, "PropInt"] is not an option. public class Obj1 { public Obj2 PropObj2 { get; set; } public Obj1() { PropObj2 = new Obj2(); } } public class Obj2 { public int PropInt { get; set; } } static class Program { [STAThread] static void Main() { var ctx = new BindingContext(); var obj1 = new Obj1(); var x1 = ctx[obj1, "PropObj2.PropInt"]; } }

• Is there a way to increase performance on my simple textfilter?

- by djerry
Hey guys, I'm writing a filter that will pick out items. I have a list of Objects. The objects contain a number, name and some other irrelevant items. At the moment, the list contains 200 items. When typing in a textbox, i'm looking if the string matches a part of the number/name of the objects in the list. If so, add them to the listbox. Here's the code for my textbox textchanged event : private void txtTelnumber_TextChanged(object sender, TextChangedEventArgs e) { lstOverview.Items.Clear(); string data = ""; foreach (ucTelListItem telList in _allUsers) { data = telList.User.H323 + telList.user.E164; if (data.Contains(txtTelnumber.Text)) lstOverview.Items.Add(telList); } } I sometimes see a little delay when entering a character, especially when i go from 4 records to 200 records (so when i had a filter and 4 records matched, and i backspace and the whole list appears again). My list is a list of usercontrols, cause i found it takes less time to load the usercontrols from a list, then to have to initialize a new usercontrol each time. Can i do something about the code, or is it just adding the usercontrol the listbox that causes the small delay (small delay = <1 sec)? Thanks in advance.

• how do I get foreign_key to work in this simple has_many, belongs_to relationship?

- by rpflo
I'm pulling data from Harvest. Here are my two models and schema: # schema create_table "clients", :force => true do |t| t.string "name" t.integer "harvest_id" end create_table "projects", :force => true do |t| t.string "name" t.integer "client_id" t.integer "harvest_id" end # Client.rb has_many :projects, :foreign_key => 'client_id' # not needed, I know # Project.rb belongs_to :client, :foreign_key => 'harvest_id' I'm trying to get the Projects to find their client by matching Project.client_id to a Client.harvest_id. Here is what I'm getting instead. > Project.first.client_id => 187259 Project.first.client => nil Client.find(187259).projects => [] Is this possible? Thanks!

• Delphi simple TCP server hangs. The form freezes but the server continues managing the clients.

- by NeoNMD
I'm using a form with an IdTCPServer on it managing strings from the client with a AThread.connection.readln/writeln system. The string handling works and that isn't the problem. The thing is, the form with the server on it hangs and will not load, but it still managed all the clients connected to it so it IS running but it just doesn't work as a form. I'll make a guess that its sitting on a readline or something... but I have NO idea how i can fix this at this moment in time. Please help. procedure TMonitorFrm.ServerExecute(AThread: TIdPeerThread); procedure post(PostMessage:string); begin try AThread.Connection.WriteLn(PostMessage); except showmessage('Cannot post'); end; end; var ActClient : PClient; sTemp, CommBlock, NewCommBlock, ReceiverName, sContent, sSQL, sCommand : String; iCount2, iCount : Integer; sldb : TSQLiteDatabase; sltb : TSQLiteTable; begin if not AThread.Terminated and AThread.Connection.Connected then begin CommBlock := AThread.Connection.ReadLn(); ActClient := PClient(AThread.Data); ActClient.LastAction := Now; sCommand := copy(CommBlock,0,pos(',',CommBlock)-1); {seperate command} sContent := copy(CommBlock,pos(',',CommBlock)+1,length(CommBlock)-(pos(',',CommBlock)+1)); {seperate data block} iCount:= 0 ; if sCommand = 'Announce' then //SPECIAL begin { Do stuff for this command...} end else if sCommand = 'CheckSect' then {Etcetera...} procedure TMonitorFrm.FormCreate(Sender: TObject); var sCompetitionID : string; sldb : TSQLiteDatabase; sltb : TSQLiteTable; begin Clients := TThreadList.Create; Server.Active := True; AreaPnlList := TComponentList.Create; SectionPnlList := TComponentList.Create; Repeat until InputQuery('Competition Select', 'Please type the ID of the competition', sCompetitionID); iCompetitionID:=StrToInt(sCompetitionID); OpenDatabase(slDb); sltb:=slDb.GetTable('SELECT * FROM SectionTable WHERE CompetitionID='+sCompetitionID); Frame31.CreateSections(sltb,Frame31); sltb.Free; CloseDatabase(slDb); { This section needs to check the SQLite databases for sections and list them in the display window and makes a drag n drop profile... } end;

• What is a better way to convert a simple sinatra app to static html pages?

- by dimus
A friend of mine asked to create a static website and I found that making such site using Sinatra is a pure joy. I just wrote all my routes like this: get '/index.html' do haml :index end get '/app.css' do sass :app end .... So I was able to use layouts, and haml and sass to put site together quickly. To create the static site I used wget -r -l2 http://localhost:4567 Which did work pretty well, but I imagine there is a better way to create a static site from a Sinatra code?

• Simple Detached pThread does not cancel! (cout blocks and interleaves even if mutexed)

- by Gabriel
I have a hard problem here, which I can not solve and do not find the right answer on the net: I have created a detached thread with a clean up routing, the problem is that on my Imac and Ubuntu 9.1 (Dual Core). I am not able to correctly cancel the detached thread in the fallowing code: #include <iostream> #include <pthread.h> #include <sched.h> #include <signal.h> #include <time.h> pthread_mutex_t mutex_t; using namespace std; static void cleanup(void *arg){ pthread_mutex_lock(&mutex_t); cout << " doing clean up"<<endl; pthread_mutex_unlock(&mutex_t); } static void *thread(void *aArgument) { pthread_setcancelstate(PTHREAD_CANCEL_ENABLE,NULL); pthread_setcanceltype(PTHREAD_CANCEL_DEFERRED,NULL); pthread_cleanup_push(&cleanup,NULL); int n=0; while(1){ pthread_testcancel(); sched_yield(); n++; pthread_mutex_lock(&mutex_t); cout << " Thread 2: "<< n<<endl; pthread_mutex_unlock(&mutex_t); } pthread_cleanup_pop(0); return NULL; } int main() { pthread_t thread_id; pthread_attr_t attr; pthread_attr_init(&attr); pthread_attr_setdetachstate(&attr,PTHREAD_CREATE_DETACHED); int error; if (pthread_mutex_init(&mutex_t,NULL) != 0) return 1; if (pthread_create(&thread_id, &attr, &(thread) , NULL) != 0) return 1; pthread_mutex_lock(&mutex_t); cout << "waiting 1s for thread...\n" <<endl; pthread_mutex_unlock(&mutex_t); int n =0; while(n<1E3){ pthread_testcancel(); sched_yield(); n++; pthread_mutex_lock(&mutex_t); cout << " Thread 1: "<< n<<endl; pthread_mutex_unlock(&mutex_t); } pthread_mutex_lock(&mutex_t); cout << "canceling thread...\n" <<endl; pthread_mutex_unlock(&mutex_t); if (pthread_cancel(thread_id) == 0) { //This doesn't wait for the thread to exit pthread_mutex_lock(&mutex_t); cout << "detaching thread...\n"<<endl; pthread_mutex_unlock(&mutex_t); pthread_detach(thread_id); while (pthread_kill(thread_id,0)==0) { sched_yield(); } pthread_mutex_lock(&mutex_t); cout << "thread is canceled"; pthread_mutex_unlock(&mutex_t); } pthread_mutex_lock(&mutex_t); cout << "exit"<<endl; pthread_mutex_unlock(&mutex_t); return 0; } When I replace the Cout with printf() i workes to the end "exit" , but with the cout (even locked) the executable hangs after outputting "detaching thread... It would be very cool to know from a Pro, what the problem here is?. Why does this not work even when cout is locked by a mutex!? Thanks a lot for your support!!

• What is the easiest way to add some simple blog functionality to my website?

- by Eric
I've got a website, already hosted, and I'd like to add a blog section to it. However, I'm running out of time, so am looking for a quick and dirty solution. Ideally, I'd like to use something like blogger or wordpress and integrate it into my site, rather than starting from scratch. Is this easy to do? Or would it be simpler to grab the RSS feed from a blog hosted on that site, and render it with XSLT? Can anyone give me some suggestions on the easiest way to include this?

• Why doesn't C# do "simple" type inference on generics?

- by Ken Birman
Just curious: sure, we all know that the general case of type inference for generics is undecidable. And so C# won't do any kind of subtyping at all: if Foo<T> is a generic, Foo<int> isn't a subtype of Foo<T>, or Foo or of anything else you might cook up. And sure, we all hack around this with ugly interface or abstract class definitions. But... if you can't beat the general problem, why not just limit the solution to cases that are easy. For example, in my list above, it is OBVIOUS that Foo<int> is a subtype of Foo<T> and it would be trivial to check. Same for checking against Foo. So is there some other deep horror that would creep forth from the abyss if they were to just say, aw shucks, we'll do what we can? Or is this just some sort of religious purity on the part of the language guys at Microsoft?

My first test program is giving me some real trouble. I have looked at the msdn documentation and I am still not really sure what I have wrong. I am getting the following errors when I try to compile this program: error C2059: syntax error : '{' error C2143: syntax error : missing ';' before '{' both on line 15. Thanks.

• How do I create a simple seach box with a submit button to bring back a result set in MVC?

- by RJ
I am very new to MVC and just learning the basics. I have been following along in Nerd Dinner and used the demo as a way to create my own app. I have created a page that lists out some food items with calories, fat, protein,etc... (http://rjsfitness.net/CalorieList) This is one of my own personal sites that I set up to test out MVC. I got a lot of it working but I am stuck on the textbox with a search button. My view page has this code for the search: My global.asax has this code for the routing: routes.MapRoute( "Search", // Route name "CalorieList/Search/{searchTerm}", // URL with parameters new { controller = "CalorieList", action = "Search", search = "" } // Parameter defaults ); My Controller has this code: public ActionResult Index(int? page) { const int pageSize = 10; //load a list with the calorie list var calorieLists = calorieListRepository.GetAllCalorieLists(); //var paginatedCalorieLists = calorieLists.Skip((page ?? 0) * pageSize).Take(pageSize).ToList(); var paginatedCalorieLists = new PaginatedList<CalorieList>(calorieLists, page ?? 0, pageSize); return View("Index", paginatedCalorieLists); } public ActionResult Search(String searchTerm) { const int pageSize = 100; int? page = 0; var calorieLists = calorieListRepository.GetCalorieListsBySearch(searchTerm); var paginatedCalorieLists = new PaginatedList<CalorieList>(calorieLists, page ?? 0, pageSize); return View("Index", paginatedCalorieLists); } return View("Index", paginatedCalorieLists); } When I enter a value and click the button, the Index method fires instead of the Seach method in the controller and I get the full list again. If I manually type the url (http://rjsfitness.net/CalorieList/Search/choc) I get the right listing. Why isn't my button click using the right routing and giving me the search results?

• Simple calculator app crashes when a third number key is punched.

- by Justin
Hi , I am a newbie to the iphone app world. So I thought I try my luck with a calculator app. Unfortunately I am running into an issue where if I press a third key in the calculator the app crashes. Sometimes I get this error EXC_BAD_ACCESS. Here is a code in my CalculatorViewController.m file. #import "CalculatorViewController.h" @implementation CalculatorViewController @synthesize screenText; - (IBAction)buttonPressed:(id)sender { NSString *title = [sender titleForState:UIControlStateNormal]; [self collect:title]; } - (void)collect:(NSString *)digitz { NSString * newText = nil; if ([digitz isEqualToString:@"+"]) { [self add:result]; big_digit = nil; } else if ([digitz isEqualToString:@"+"]) { [self sub:result]; } else if ([digitz isEqualToString:@"x"]) { [self multiply:result]; } else if ([digitz isEqualToString:@"="]) { [self equate:result]; } else { if (big_digit != nil && [big_digit isEqualToString:@"0"] == FALSE) big_digit = [big_digit stringByAppendingFormat:@"%@",digitz]; else big_digit = (NSMutableString *) digitz; result = (int) big_digit; newText = [[NSString alloc] initWithFormat: @"%@",big_digit]; } screenText.text = newText; [newText release]; } - (void)add:(int)res { NSString * newText = nil; ans = ans + res; newText = [[NSString alloc] initWithFormat: @"%@",ans]; screenText.text = newText; [newText release]; } Can anyone spot an obvious issue here. Here is the respective header file too. #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> @interface CalculatorViewController : UIViewController { UILabel *screenText; int number; int result; int ans; //NSString *big_digit; NSMutableString * big_digit ; } @property (nonatomic, retain) IBOutlet UILabel *screenText; - (IBAction)buttonPressed:(id)sender; - (void)collect:(NSString *)digitz; - (void)add:(int)num; - (void)sub:(int)num; - (void)multiply:(int)num; - (void)equate:(int)num; @end

• Simple XNA 2D demo: why is my F# version slower than C# version?

- by Den
When running this XNA application it should display a rotated rectangle that moves from top-left corner to bottom-right corner. It looks like my F# version is noticeably much slower. It seems that the Draw method skips a lot of frames. I am using VS 2012 RC, XNA 4.0, .NET 4.5, F# 3.0. I am trying to make it as functional as possible. What could be the reason for poor performance? C#: class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { using (var game = new FlockGame()) { game.Run(); } } } public class FlockGame : Game { private GraphicsDeviceManager graphics; private DrawingManager drawingManager; • Simple way of getting the Last.fm artist image for recently listened songs?

- by animuson
On the Last.fm website, your recently listened track include the 34x34 (or whatever size) image at the left of each song. However, in the RSS feed that they give you, no image URLs are provided for the songs. I was wondering if there was a good way of figuring out the ID for the image that needs to be used for that artist and displaying it based on the data that we're given. I know it is possible to load the artist page from their website and then grab the image values from JavaScript, but that seems overly complicated and would probably take quite some time to do. What we're given:

Owl City – Rainbow Veins

http://www.last.fm/music/Owl+City

and the 34x34 image for this song would be here (ID# 37056785). Does anything like this exist? I've considered storing the ID number in a cache of some sort once it has been checked once, but what if the image changes?

• C++: parsing with simple regular expression or shoud I use sscanf?

- by Helltone
I need to parse a string like func1(arg1, arg2); func2(arg3, arg4);. It's not a very complex parsing problem, so I would prefer to avoid resorting to flex/bison or similar utilities. My first approch was to try to use POSIX C regcomp/regexec or Boost implementation of C++ std::regex. I wrote the following regular expression, which does not work (I'll explain why further on). "^" "[ ;\t\n]*" "(" // (1) identifier "[a-zA-Z_][a-zA-Z0-9_]*" ")" "[ \t\n]*" "(" // (2) non-marking "\[" "(" // (3) non-marking "[ \t]*" "(" // (4..n-1) argument "[a-zA-Z0-9_]+" ")" "[ \t\n]*" "," ")*" "[ \t\n]*" "(" // (n) last argument "[a-zA-Z0-9_]+" ")" "]" ")?" "[ \t\n]*" ";" Note that the group 1 captures the identifier and groups 4..n-1 are intended to capture arguments except the last, which is captured by group n. When I apply this regex to, say func(arg1, arg2, arg3) the result I get is an array {func, arg2, arg3}. This is wrong because arg1 is not in it! The problem is that in the standard regex libraries, submarkings only capture the last match. In other words, if you have for instance the regex "((a*|b*))*" applied on "babb", the results of the inner match will be bb and all previous captures will have been forgotten. Another thing that annoys me here is that in case of error there is no way to know which character was not recognized as these functions provide very little information about the state of the parser when the input is rejected. So I don't know if I'm missing something here... In this case should I use sscanf or similar instead? Note that I prefer to use C/C++ standard libraries (and maybe boost).

• How can I bind a simple Javascript array to an MVC3 controller action method?

- by Sergio Tapia
Here is the javascript code I use to create the array and send it on it's way:  The items object is properly constructed with the values I need. What data type must my object be on the backend of my controller? I tried this but the variable remains null and is not bound. [Authorize] [HttpPost] public ActionResult UpdateCart(object[] items) // items remains null. { // Some magic here. return RedirectToAction("Index"); }

• Why does Java force user-agent through simple Socket IO?

I am using nothing but raw Socket IO. There isn't one HttpURLConnection nor any http client libs in my project. In the example of bar chart, they are giving a hard coded array like this, var myData = new Array(['U.S.A.', 69.5], ['Canada', 2.8], ['Japan & SE.Asia', 5.6] ); var myChart = new JSChart('graph', 'bar'); myChart.setDataArray(myData); Instead of that I want to use the response of $.post() method which is in json. Here is the piece of code. var myData=[]; $.post("JSONServlet", function(data) { $.each(data.Userdetails, function(i, data) { myData[i] = []; myData[i]['text'] = data['firstname']; myData[i]['id'] = data['ssn']; alert("first name " +myData[i]['text']+ " salary " +myData[i]['id']); // I am getting correct data here, but how to assign this myData to barchart }); }, "json"); is this the logic to use or how else can i get username and salary from the response and pass it to the barchart. Please help. I am stuck with this. thanks in advance.

• Number of simple mutations to change one string to another?

- by mstksg
Hi; I'm sure you've all heard of the "Word game", where you try to change one word to another by changing one letter at a time, and only going through valid English words. I'm trying to implement an A* Algorithm to solve it (just to flesh out my understanding of A*) and one of the things that is needed is a minimum-distance heuristic. That is, the minimum number of one of these three mutations that can turn an arbitrary string a into another string b: 1) Change one letter for another 2) Add one letter at a spot before or after any letter 3) Remove any letter Examples aabca => abaca: aabca abca abaca = 2 abcdebf => bgabf: abcdebf bcdebf bcdbf bgdbf bgabf = 4 I've tried many algorithms out; I can't seem to find one that gives the actual answer every time. In fact, sometimes I'm not sure if even my human reasoning is finding the best answer. Does anyone know any algorithm for such purpose? Or maybe can help me find one? Thanks.

• Hopefully simple topic to spark some good opinions, Question is MySQL or SQL Server???

- by magellings
I'm beginning development of a website and a high priority is for it to be extremely optimized, quick responses, etc. There will ultimately end up being large amounts of rows in the main tables (millions), so scalability is also important. It will need to use a database on the back-end for data storage and my web hosting service supports either MySQL or Sql Server. This website will be developed with .NET ASP.NET MVC with NHibernate (hopefully it can run in medium trust mode, as that is a requirement of my web hosting and reflection requirements of NHibernate may be problematic, maybe someone has a comment on this too). I'd also prefer to use the database that will require the least attention in regards to management. I don't want to have to be a DBA here. :) I wanted to through this topic out to the public to see what the community thinks? So MySQL or Sql Server, generally, which one would be better to use?
