• when to introduce an application services tier in an n-tier application

- by user20358
I am developing a web based application whose primary objective is to fetch data from the database, display it on the UI, take in user inputs and write them back to the database. The application is not going to be doing any industrial strength algorithm crunching, but will be receiving a very high number of hits at peak times (described below) which will be changing thru the day. The layers are your typical Presentation, Business, Data. The data layer is taken care of by the database server. The business layer will contain the DAL component to access the database server over tcp. The choices I have to separate these layers into tiers are: The presentation and business layers can be either kept on the same tier. The presentation layer on a separate tier by itself and the business layer on a separate tier by itself. In the case of choice 2, the business layer will be accessed by the presentation layer using a WCF service either over http or tcp. I don't see any heavy processing being done on the Business layer, so I am leaning towards option 1 above. I also feel for the same reason, adding a new tier will only introduce the network latency. However, in terms of scalability in case I need to scale up or scale out, which is a better way to go? This application will need to be able to support up to 6 million users an hour. There will be a reasonable amount of data in each user session, storing user's preferences and other details. I will be using page level caching as well.

• Mac OSX Server 10.6 DNS Issues

- by dallasclark
Hi, The server was upgraded from 10.5 from 10.6, during the upgrade the Reverse Zones were lost so I tried to recreate these but found that it's best to delete all zones, definitions and start again. So I've started again and Reverse Zones are appearing but I'm still having issues. • Improper output in SSH session on OSX using FreeSSHd on Windows with cygwin bash/sh shell

- by Tyler Clendenin
I am testing out running an SSH server on a local Windows VM. I have installed FreeSSHd and set the command shell to "c:\cygwin\bin\sh --login -i" (bash as well) with "Use new console engine" unchecked. (When it was enabled no output would show through the ssh connection anyway) The shell seems to work, but when connecting from my OS-X terminal using ssh all of the shell results comes out ill formatted. $ ls -al total 17 drwxr-xr-x+ 1 SYSTEM Administrators 4096 Feb 2 01:00 . drwxrwxrwt+ 1 Administrator Administrators 0 Feb 2 01:01 .. -rw------- 1 SYSTEM Administrators 128 Feb 2 01:30 .bash_history -rwxr-xr-x 1 SYSTEM Administrators 1150 Feb 2 00:55 .bash_profile -rwxr-xr-x 1 SYSTEM Administrators 3754 Feb 2 00:55 .bashrc -rwxr-xr-x 1 SYSTEM Administrators 1461 Feb 2 00:55 .inputrc Any ideas on why this is happening, how I can fix this?

• Deploying SSIS to Integration Services Catalog (SSISDB) via SQL Server Data Tools

- by Kevin Shyr
There are quite a few good articles/blogs on this. For a straight forward deployment, read this (http://www.bibits.co/post/2012/08/23/SSIS-SQL-Server-2012-Project-Deployment.aspx). For a more dynamic and comprehensive understanding about all the different settings, read part 1 (http://www.mssqltips.com/sqlservertip/2450/ssis-package-deployment-model-in-sql-server-2012-part-1-of-2/) and part 2 (http://www.mssqltips.com/sqlservertip/2451/ssis-package-deployment-model-in-sql-server-2012-part-2-of-2/) Microsoft official doc: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh213373 This only thing I would add is the following. After your first deployment, you'll notice that the subsequent deployment skips the second step (go directly "Select Destination" and skipped "Select Source"). That's because after your initial deployment, a ispac file is created to track deployment. If you decide to go back to "Select Source" and select SSIS catalog again, the deployment process will complete, but the packages will not be deployed.

• Running Mac OSX 10.6 my users home directory is wrong

- by Erik Miller
Somehow my home directory on my mac machine has been changed and I'm not sure how to go about changing it back, I'm more of a linux guy and mac has some other mechanism for storing that information. Basically when I log into the machine normally than start a terminal window. I start in the /Users/erik_miller directory, which is my home directory, but when I run some this like cd ~ The machine tries to change to /Users/erik_miller. Yes, the same path with a period on the end. I can change my $HOME environment variable for the session, but the next time I start the machine it reverts. So, I think if I can find where that information is stored I can just change it there and hopefully all will be well.

• Setting up a localhost mail server on Mac OSX

- by Thom
I asked this over on stackoverflow. They pointed me here. I would love to be able to test php webapps that require emailing registration info etc. on my mac. I downloaded a version of CommuniGate Pro. I need to mail either to an account inside or outside (whichever is best) of the localhost. Again this would be used for testing purposes to verify and debug my code prior to uploading to a hosting service. Any ideas, help and/or examples would be very much appreciated. If it would be easier I could go over to Windows XP. That would just mean setting up wamp and transfering my files over from the mac side via dropbox. I got the local mailserver to work so I can send emails between accounts. However, I cannot seem to get the php code to work. I know that I am missing something. I see where this has been asked before. I want to add that I am using xampp. In Mac OS 10.6.8. I tried changing the php.ini SMTP command to macintosh-3.local. <?php function email($to, $subject, $body, $headers) { $headers = 'MIME-Version: 1.0' . "\r\n"; $headers .= 'From: <[email protected]>' . "\r\n"; mail($to, $subject, $body, $headers); } ?>

• Mac OSX server command equivalent for dhclient?

- by John Hall
Is there an MacOS command that makes a dhcp request, and renews the old lease, drops it for a new one, or usefully reports errors or lack of response from a dhcp server? This would both help fix networking on the machine after problems on the network without rebooting and would also be useful to diagnose wider networking problems from a mac. I can not find any command equivalent of dhclient though obviously some component must be serving this purpose. The question is, is that component exposed to a command line interface? I am biased to the command line for these features and may have overlooked settings panels or tools that might solve it using a gui interface. I believe this question is at the heart of this other question: Is there an equivalent command for 'init.d/networking restart' in OS X

• Cannot get mod_rewrite to work on Mac OSX Mountain Lion

- by Joel Joel Binks
I have tried everything I can think of and it still doesn't work. I am trying to get the example code from Larry Ullman's Advanced PHP book to work. His instructions were a bit lacking so I had to do some research. Here is what I have configured: username.conf <Directory "/Users/me/Sites/"> Options Indexes MultiViews FollowSymLinks AllowOverride All Order allow, deny Allow from all </Directory> httpd.conf LoadModule rewrite_module libexec/apache2/mod_rewrite.so DocumentRoot "/Users/me/Sites" <Directory /> Options Indexes MultiViews FollowSymLinks AllowOverride All Order deny, allow Allow from all </Directory> <Directory "Users/me/Sites"> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride All Order allow, deny Allow from all </Directory> .htaccess <IfModule mod_rewrite.so> RewriteEngine on RewriteBase /phplearning/ADVANCED/ch02/ # Redirect certain paths to index.php: RewriteRule ^(about|contact|this|that|search)/?$ index.php?p=$1 RewriteLog "/var/log/apache/rewrite.log" RewriteLogLevel 2 </IfModule> Nothing has worked and it won't even log to the rewrite.log file. What have I done wrong? FYI even when I set up an extremely simple rule or use the root as the rewrite base, it still fails. I have also verified the mod_rewrite module is running. I am really angry.

• Semi-blocking Transformations in SQL Server Integration Services SSIS

In a SSIS data flow, there are multiple types of transformations. On one hand you have synchronous and asynchronous transformations, but on the other hand you have non-blocking, semi-blocking and fully-blocking components. In this tip, Koen Verbeeck takes a closer look on the performance impact of semi-blocking transformations in SSIS. Can 41,000 DBAs really be wrong? • Women in Technology Microsoft Career Webcast: Learn More About Microsoft Services Roles

- by Lara Rubbelke
Since I joined Microsoft over 2 1/2 years ago, many of my friends and colleagues ask me how I like it and how things are going. To be more precise, often these friends tip their heads to the side and ask with great concern “How are you doing? Are you working all the time?”. In many cases, I think this would be the same manner that they may have inquired on my state after a death in the family:-) I don’t begrudge anyone for how they approach me in my choice to join Microsoft, and fully appreciate...(read more)

• Completely remove Postgres on Mac OSX Lion

- by Nai
I'm trying to get postgis running on my machine. Running brew install postgis seems to have installed postgres 9.2.1 on to my machine. I would like to remove my previous version 9.1.2 to keep my environment clean. Running brew uninstall postgres removes 9.2.1. What's the best way to do this? UPDATE nai@nyc ~ $ brew versions postgresql 9.2.1 git checkout ed92469 /usr/local/Library/Formula/postgresql.rb 9.2.0 git checkout 2f6cbc6 /usr/local/Library/Formula/postgresql.rb 9.1.5 git checkout 6b8d25f /usr/local/Library/Formula/postgresql.rb 9.1.4 git checkout c40c7bf /usr/local/Library/Formula/postgresql.rb 9.1.3 git checkout 05c7954 /usr/local/Library/Formula/postgresql.rb 9.1.2 git checkout dfcc838 /usr/local/Library/Formula/postgresql.rb 9.1.1 git checkout 4ef8fb0 /usr/local/Library/Formula/postgresql.rb 9.0.4 git checkout 2accac4 /usr/local/Library/Formula/postgresql.rb 9.0.3 git checkout b782d9d /usr/local/Library/Formula/postgresql.rb 9.0.2 git checkout 2c3b88a /usr/local/Library/Formula/postgresql.rb 9.0.1 git checkout b7fab6c /usr/local/Library/Formula/postgresql.rb 9.0.0 git checkout 1168d8f /usr/local/Library/Formula/postgresql.rb 8.4.4 git checkout c32bea0 /usr/local/Library/Formula/postgresql.rb 8.4.3 git checkout 237d1c5 /usr/local/Library/Formula/postgresql.rb

• Sporadic '.Xauthority not writable, changes will be ignored' going from OSX -> Linux

- by Kamil Kisiel
Every now and then when users SSH from their OS X (Snow Leopard) workstation to one of our Linux hosts they receive the message: /usr/bin/xauth: ~/.Xauthority not writable, changes will be ignored Of course, their X forwarded applications will not work at this point. However, if they log out and log right back in again they do not get the message and everything works as expected. On their Mac they get their home directory via AFP. The Linux machines get it via NFS. Any ideas on what could be going on here?

• WIF, ADFS 2 and WCF–Part 6: Chaining multiple Token Services

- by Your DisplayName here!
See the previous posts first. So far we looked at the (simpler) scenario where a client acquires a token from an identity provider and uses that for authentication against a relying party WCF service. Another common scenario is, that the client first requests a token from an identity provider, and then uses this token to request a new token from a Resource STS or a partner’s federation gateway. This sounds complicated, but is actually very easy to achieve using WIF’s WS-Trust client support. The sequence is like this: Request a token from an identity provider. You use some “bootstrap” credential for that like Windows integrated, UserName or a client certificate. The realm used for this request is the identifier of the Resource STS/federation gateway. Use the resulting token to request a new token from the Resource STS/federation gateway. The realm for this request would be the ultimate service you want to talk to. Use this resulting token to authenticate against the ultimate service. Step 1 is very much the same as the code I have shown in the last post. In the following snippet, I use a client certificate to get a token from my STS: private static SecurityToken GetIdPToken() { var factory = new WSTrustChannelFactory( new CertificateWSTrustBinding(SecurityMode.TransportWithMessageCredential, idpEndpoint); factory.TrustVersion = TrustVersion.WSTrust13; factory.Credentials.ClientCertificate.SetCertificate( StoreLocation.CurrentUser, StoreName. My, X509FindType.FindBySubjectDistinguishedName, "CN=Client"); var rst = new RequestSecurityToken { RequestType = RequestTypes.Issue, AppliesTo = new EndpointAddress(rstsRealm), KeyType = KeyTypes.Symmetric }; var channel = factory.CreateChannel(); return channel.Issue(rst); } To use a token to request another token is slightly different. First the IssuedTokenWSTrustBinding is used and second the channel factory extension methods are used to send the identity provider token to the Resource STS: private static SecurityToken GetRSTSToken(SecurityToken idpToken) { var binding = new IssuedTokenWSTrustBinding(); binding.SecurityMode = SecurityMode.TransportWithMessageCredential; var factory = new WSTrustChannelFactory( binding, rstsEndpoint); factory.TrustVersion = TrustVersion.WSTrust13; factory.Credentials.SupportInteractive = false; var rst = new RequestSecurityToken { RequestType = RequestTypes.Issue, AppliesTo = new EndpointAddress(svcRealm), KeyType = KeyTypes.Symmetric }; factory.ConfigureChannelFactory(); var channel = factory.CreateChannelWithIssuedToken(idpToken); return channel.Issue(rst); } For this particular case I chose an ADFS endpoint for issued token authentication (see part 1 for more background). Calling the service now works exactly like I described in my last post. You may now wonder if the same thing can be also achieved using configuration only – absolutely. But there are some gotchas. First of all the configuration files becomes quite complex. As we discussed in part 4, the bindings must be nested for WCF to unwind the token call-stack. But in this case svcutil cannot resolve the first hop since it cannot use metadata to inspect the identity provider. This binding must be supplied manually. The other issue is around the value for the realm/appliesTo when requesting a token for the R-STS. Using the manual approach you have full control over that parameter and you can simply use the R-STS issuer URI. Using the configuration approach, the exact address of the R-STS endpoint will be used. This means that you may have to register multiple R-STS endpoints in the identity provider. Another issue you will run into is, that ADFS does only accepts its configured issuer URI as a known realm by default. You’d have to manually add more audience URIs for the specific endpoints using the ADFS Powershell commandlets. I prefer the “manual” approach. That’s it. Hope this is useful information.

• Determining what files are considered open in Mac OSX

- by Doug
Hi all; Apologies if this has been discussed previously... I did a stack overflow and google search but probably didn't use the right keywords. Anyway, is there an easy way to determine what files are open on Mac OS X? I had an issue in which I could not unmount a firewire HD until I closed all running apps. Turns out keychain access had a reference to a file on the HD, but it begged the question: how to find out what files are open and what app (or apps) has the file open? Thanks in advance and again apologies if this has been covered previously. Doug.

• SQL Server Integration Services 2008: Importing Excel Data Using Derived Column Transformation

The complexity involved in transferring data between Excel and SQL Server results from different and sometimes incompatible data types. The Import and Export wizard mitigates potential issues introduced by these incompatibilities by taking advantage of Data Conversion Transformation. Marcin Policht describes another approach that produces an equivalent outcome by employing Derived Column Transformation instead.

• Is there a way to host email with snow leopard server on site?

- by erotsppa
We are faced with a dilemma with using snow leopard. We want to have thr snow leopard server on site and not off site because it makes sense to have the server in the network physically for other services (file sharing, VPN, wiki etc) but our office does not have a very reliable Internet connection so it'd hard to host the email with it. We don't want to factor out the email as a separate server because we want to enjoy a single user login across everything. How do we get around this dilemma?

• Strange Apache Webdav situation (OSX Will connect, Ubuntu will not)

- by mewrei
So basically my situation is that I have an Apache 2.2 webserver running on Linux on another box, and I have it configured to serve up webdav. Now here's the weird part, I can access the server just fine on my Mac using the "Connect to Server" dialog (even moved like 5GB of files over the connection). On my Ubuntu desktop cadaver will connect as well and allow me to browse. However when I try to use Xmarks (BYOS Edition) or the GNOME "Connect to Server" dialog, it gives me a 403 Forbidden error. My server does digest authentication if that makes any difference. Here's part of my apache2.conf file <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot "/path" <Directory "/path"> Dav on AuthType Digest AuthName iTools AuthDigestDomain "/" AuthUserFile /path/to/WebDavUsers Options None AllowOverride None <LimitExcept GET HEAD OPTIONS> require valid-user </LimitExcept> Order allow, deny Allow from All </Directory> <Directory "/path/*/Public"> Options +Indexes </Directory> <Directory "/path/user"> <LimitExcept GET HEAD OPTIONS> require user user </LimitExcept> </Directory> </VirtualHost>

• How to Install PCRE Development Headers on Mac OSX

- by martincarlin87
I just upgraded my MacBook Pro to Mavericks and my local Ruby on Rails development environment isn't running straight off the bat, when I visit localhost I see It works! and remembered I needed to start Phusion Passenger, so when I run passenger start it checks all the requisites and fails when it gets to the PCRE Development Headers: * Checking for PCRE development headers... Found: no It tells me to go to http://www.pcre.org/ to download them so I downloaded 8.33 from here which went to my Downloads folder, so I unzipped it, cd'd to the folder and ran: ./configure make make install Then cd'd back to my rails app directory on my Desktop and re-ran passenger start but it's still the same. Tried a new Terminal window but that didn't make any difference. I must have done this before to get my dev environment working but can't seem to solve it this time. I also tried brew install pcre but it says Warning: pcre-8.33 already installed.
