I connect to my company VPN for email, intranet, fileshare etc, but when I'm working I also like to listen to Spotify which is blocked through the company network, so I have to disconnect to the VPN to use it. Is there anything I can do which will enable me to remain connected to the VPN but bypass it for Spotify? I use the Cisco VPN client.

I have a Kenwood KA-4006 Amp that I have connected to my macbook. I know that speakers have magnets in them. I just wanted to verify that there are no magnets in the amp that will mess with my mac. Also wondering if I need to worry about my comptuer getting too close to the speakers.
Thanks
I am a fan of ReadyBoost and have seen good results using it with my work laptop. I tried something today and connected a second flash drive (2GB) and configured it for use with ReadyBoost. The first is an 8GB configured with 4GB for ReadyBoost. I'm using Windows 7 RC 7100 and was wondering if using more than one ReadyBoost drive helps?
Hello, I'm looking at Windows Home Server and I'm wondering if the users you create on the server will let you log into any machine that's connected to the home server?
I'm in a ssh connection and I would like to play a sound after a command completes (not on the server where I connected).
Something:
ssh [email protected]
make && play-sound-local
I have built-in pc-speaker disabled so echo -e "\a" doesn't work.
Any suggestions?
I'm trying to configure caller id on a USB modem connected to a Windows 7 x32 machine. Hyperterminal isn't available so I downloaded the latest version of Putty and am using the Serial option. I'm using the modem's COM port details from Device Manager (COM5, 115200 baud), but when I open the putty session it just hangs with the cursor at the top left hand corner. Hitting the Enter key does nothing.
Any ideas??
Hello,
I'm looking for a windows tool that can tell me who is using bandwith.
As of now I've setup so that the switch where all pcs are connected, mirrors the router's traffic to my pc, meaning that from my NIC I am able to see all outgoing and incoming internet connections.
This works, I have used NIMAS (http://www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/200) and I am able to see internet traffic.
Now what I am looking for is something even more simple, where I can see what computers are using what banwidth, live.
I'm trying to link a debian server authentication to active directory.
I followed this tutorial: http://wiki.debian.org/Authenticating_Linux_With_Active_Directory but I'm stuck on the
getent passwd
Because this doesn't list all AD users but only locals.
This is my nsswitch.conf:
passwd: files winbind
group: files winbind
shadow: files winbind
And I'm sure it is well connected to AD becuse this:
wbinfo -u
Lists all AD users.
What have I missed?
Has anyone tried connected outlook(I am running v2007 on Windows 7) to a mail service using the MS Exchange Active Sync protocol? If so, how did you do it?
Wouldn't this solution probably eliminate the need for all the hacks/APIs needed to connect outlook to 'X' mail (Gmail, notes, etc)?
I know it is intended for mobile devices, but to me it looks like it is becoming the latest 'de facto' mail protocol for email/calendar/contact sync'ing due to the iPhone's support for it.
Thanks!
The question says it all. All i want is that my W-Lan connection should be disabled whenever a wired connection is available.
What would be the easiest way to do that in Ubuntu/Gnome?
In all guides (for instance some about guessnet) i found i had to configure my whole network configuration (WPA keys, DHCP, ...), but i find that a bit too complicated for such a simple use case. I just want to disable wlan0 when eth0 is connected.
I have the following situation : a Dell windows server 2008 R2 computer, with remote desktop services installed. I have installed a java application making use of a PostgreSql database, and made this application available for clients using RDP. Clients are standard Win XP pc's and Psion Neo handheld devices running Windows CE 5 Pro.
The application works fine for clients on standard XP pc's connected directly via cat 5E Ethernet cable to a Dell Powerconnect 2816 switch. The Psion Neo clients connect wireless to the network via Motorola AP6532 access points. These access points are connected via a POE adapter to the same switch as the XP pc's. The Psion devices can connect without any problem and very quickly to the server and to the application using RDP. So far, so good.
When the Psion devices move around in the warehouse, and they roam from one access point to the other, the RDP session on the client freezes for approx 1 minute, and then it automatically resumes the session. This freezing is very annoying for the users.
Can anyone help in solving this issue?
Update (August 9) :
After re-installing the access points we have a working situation, but only when connecting to the RDP host :
* via a Win Xp SP3 laptop
* via a Symbol MC9190 Win CE 6 mobile device
When roaming we notice a small hick-up less then 1 second, what is very acceptable.
With the Psion NEO it's still not working, when roaming the screen freezes from 2 to 30 seconds.
The RDP client on the win xp sp3 laptop and the symbol mc9190 is version 6.0.
The RDP client on the neo is version 5.2.
I have changed the security layer on the RDP host to RDP security layer (based on forums on the internet), because older RDP clients seem to have issues with the RDP 7.1 protocol on the Win server 2088 R2.
Psion adviced us to do some network logging activity on the different devices.
We made this logging via wireshark, and based on this the conclusion of Psion is that the server fails in handling tcp-requests.
Can anyone give me a second opinion by analysing the wireshark loggings.
Thanks in advance.
Regards
Patrick
My computer is already connected to a 100Mbps LAN.
I can use wvdial to connect to internet using a modem when I have my LAN disconnected.
Now, I want to share this modem
internet to one of the ip address
available on LAN say 10.100.99.56..
First of all, can it be done?
How do I go about doing that?
We have a server with Apache 2.4, Tomcat 7 and phpmyadmin, all of them installed by source, no repository.
I connected Apache with Tomcat through the jk connector by doing:
JkMount /* worker1
and I moved /phpmyadmin in the Apache DocumentRoot, but of course website/phpmyadmin will redirect me to Tomcat, but I dont want that. It works only if I comment out the JKMount line
So, how can I configure Apache with Tomcat and phpmyadmin so that /* requests are forwarded to Tomcat and /phpmyadmin directly served by Apache?
I have a very odd problem that I can't resolve. I am connected to the internet, but my browsing doesn't work. I don't mean a web browser - I mean browsing. Firefox, Chrome, Curl all fail to successfully connect to an HTTP address.
However existing connections, e.g. to mail in Outlook (Exchange Server and also IMAP server) continue to work.
Also, the internet is on, I can confirm both from my machine (other ports / connections) as well as from any other computer connected to the same network.
Additionally, it appears to be HTTP, not simple a port issue as HTTP over port 8443 (Tortoise SVN if you must know - running over HTTP not over SVN) also fails.
I am using Windows Vista SP2 (build 6002). It seems to "creep up" in that after running the computer for a few hours it will fail. (No found way to systematically reproduce the problem.) Additionally, it seems to be more prone on days where the internet connection is flaky already (not sure why the internet is flaky, just is, lot's of failed browsing requests and have to retry/reload often).
What I have tried (when the problem arises) - none have yielded any resolution:
Resetting the network connection (dis-connect, re-connect)
Disable/re-enable the network adapter
Double-checked the ip settings
Double-checked the HOSTS file. Note: DNS continues to work (both new and cached responses to DNS queries). (Thanks for the suggestion Daniel and antenore.)
Checked the routing tables (ip4 only as ipv6 is beyond my understanding)
resetting all involved hardware (routers and modems)
Close and reopen browsers
Looked for malware interference:
Run HijackThis
Looked for suspicious processes using SysInternals procexp.
Looked for explorer hijacks, lsa provider interference, winsock provider interference using SysInternals Autoruns.
Run a complete anti-virus scan.
Reviewed the output of a netstat -onab to see if there were stuck ports open or unusual processes running somewhere
The only thing that works is to do a full reboot. That works 100% of the time to restore browsing.
What else can I try to nail down the problem?
I am serving mp3s with a minimalistic nginx server. What I see in my log files is that there are a lot of requests, in particular from AppleCoreMedia and sometimes Android useragents, that flood the server with short requests. Sometimes they keep requesting to download the same partial content for a very long time; sometimes more than an hour. For example:
"GET /somefile.mp3 HTTP/1.1" 206 33041 "AppleCoreMedia/1.0.0.9B206 (iPhone; U; CPU OS 5_1_1 like Mac OS X; en_us)"
"GET /somefile.mp3 HTTP/1.1" 206 33041 "AppleCoreMedia/1.0.0.9B206 (iPhone; U; CPU OS 5_1_1 like Mac OS X; en_us)"
"GET /somefile.mp3 HTTP/1.1" 206 33041 "AppleCoreMedia/1.0.0.9B206 (iPhone; U; CPU OS 5_1_1 like Mac OS X; en_us)"
[...]
I also get a lot, but not as much, of these:
"-" 400 0 "-"
"-" 400 0 "-"
The IP addresses are always from clients that start downloading shortly after that request, usually they have roughly the same UserAgent as in the first example.

I have enabled server throttling and connection limits in nginx to limit the huge amount of log entries from equivalent IPs at least somewhat.
There was a performance issue when I saw the same behaviour on the previous server that used Apache. I installed nginx on a better server then moved the site. When Apache could not handle more connections from the increasing number of clients effectively that server was ddossed. There was no bandwidth issue with already connected clients and I don't know if the already connected clients were using more than one connection at a time.
Please tell me:
Are clients that appear to get stuck on a download a Bad Thing™
I heard people say their mobile bandwidth use was much higher than they could account for. I'm thinking this type of client behaviour can account for that. And costs us more bandwidth too.
Which up to date alternatives exist out there that can handle serving this type of data better than plain HTTP?
Useful general insights for someone who just came into this field straight out of the late 90s. :-)
I got a 200GB .tgz file on server A(RHEL 5.2). I wanna transfer that file to server B (RHEL 5.3). Server B is on ESXi 4 Update1. I gave 10GB to that Server B VM, with 4 vCPUs.
Both Server A and Server B are connected with an ethernet cable with local IP addies (no switch involved)
scp gives me about 3Mbps. Is there a way to get 400Mbps?
I have a macbook pro with OS X 10.5 connected to an external monitor. Mirroring is currently turned on. I want to set my external monitor as my primary and make my laptop LCD my secondary. How do I achieve that?
How do I get UAC to behave so that I can control the dimmed desktop and programs running under UAC grants with synergy client? (The kb and mouse are connected to a Linux machine, windows is running synergy client)
Or is turning UAC off the only option?
A friend of mine is moving to a building with no Internet connectivity. Ethernet and wifi are out of the question. What is the best way for him to get his desktop connected? The most obvious solution is for him to get an unlimited 3G data plan. What is the best way for him to set this up? I am assuming he should get something like Verizon's MiFi 3G access point, but does this have an ethernet jack?
I have followed the guide here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qbpxKRb-94
But my situation differs with respect to there being no AD (Active Directory) setup.
When I try to connect I get this in the server event log:
"The user xx connected from x.x.x.x but failed an authentication attempt due to the following reason: The account does not have permission to dial in."
Is there a way to enable this without AD?
When using VLC in my Windows 7 (RC), the audio works only if my head phones are connected. Without the head phones, the audio is not heard at all. Other players deliver the audio perfectly. Is this caused by some incorrect preferences ?
Hi I have a MySQL server that I need access through a VPN.
I use MySQLdb package to access MySQL server in Python.
When I can access the server without VPN, it works fine, but when I'm at certain locations, I need to connect through VPN.
My computer is connected to the VPN and I can access the database through PHPMyAdmin, but MySQLdb gives me an error message:
OperationalError: (2003, "Can't connect to MySQL server on 'MY_IP' (10061)")
Any ideas on why it's not working?
Thanks
I have an issue with a "N40L" HP Proliant Microserver. When the server is powered on the power light turns green but the machine's status light (the HP logo on the front) stays off and there is no video output through th onboard VGA. The system fan kicks in and if connected to a network the link light shows activity. I have no extra boards (iLO card, graphics card) only 4GB PNY non-standard stick of RAM.
