So... I discovered that my wtmp file was really big today, like 2.1GB.
I deleted it and recreated it, but...
Is there any way I can tell logrotate to well, rotate the log?
FUSE filesystem list show some FuseFat and FatFuse. Both are old, FatFuse is read-only , FuseFat is non-buildable and probably depends on glib.
Now I'm using mountlo for the task (mounting USB drives in generic way without root access or suid things (except of fusermount itself)), but it looks too big for such task.
Is there good vfat FUSE driver?
Is there a way to get this box to list the local and network drives first instead of listing favorites and libraries first? I have a user who claims this is how this box was until fairly recently but I have not made any changes nor pushed out any big updates. Now that he mentions it, its starting to bug me too. Thanks.
I downloaded the ISO of Windows 7 RC but I don't have a CD/DVD big enough to burn. I have an empty flash drive with plenty of space, is there anyway I can put the ISO on it and install from it as if it were a CD?

I have been seeing these following error codes on our LDAP server:
zgrep -o err=[0-9]* ldap.log.1.gz | sort | uniq -c
106664 err=0
146 err=16
288 err=4
29 err=49
8106 err=6
Can someone explain what err=6 is exactly and if its a big problem? I have been seeing lately some failures to authenticate and wonder if it is related to these errors?
I have seen a possible timeout problem in the 2.2 Code base and not sure if theres a patch or if I would have to upgrade to the latest openldap version?
thanks

Is there a hidden setting or an external utility that would enable moving windows on Windows like on GNOME?
I'm particularly thinking of moving windows using Alt + Drag and drop (which can be changed to Win + drag and drop).
I have machine with Windows (7) and two big monitors at work, and I tend to use multiple smaller windows. Moving them quickly around is essential, so I'm always missing this GNOME feature.
I have just installed the Xubuntu 10.04. But the display seems to be latency. When I try to copy a big file from usb disk to hard disk, the CPU is 100% used. So I doubt that some device drivers are missing.
I can use lspci to show the PCI devices on my machine, but how could I tell whether proper drivers have been installed or not?
Many thanks.
I have a few hundred family images and they were all sent to us with borders that I would like to remove. Thankfully the borders are all the same size of 20 pixels and they are all .jpg so this will probably make things easier but im looking for a way to "batch process" all of them quickly so I dont need to open photoshop for each image and do it individually. Command line is preferred, the only big problem is they are mostly different sizes.
Here is an example
Rationale:
I want to manage libraries of media files (music, images) using git, there is git-annex but it requires haskel platform - but they do not play together well (also it's quite to big dependency for me).
Question:
Is there any other plugin with this functionality, or possibly would it be possible to write such plugin (resources?).

i have about 50 labels that are each just barely big enough to fit the letter x in them. the labels are on a report. i need to align all the labels very precisely.
is there an easier way to do this than trusting my eyes?
Hey!
I have 3 monitors, 2 24 inch and one 22 inch.
The max resolution of the 24 inch monitors is 1920 x 1080 and the 22 is a bit less (can't remember right now).
I read Jeff's post about the display port adapters and I was wondering if passive adapter would do the trick since neither of the monitors have big resolutions.
Thanks
You probably all know the relatively simple RAID boxes exporting a bunch of SATA disks as one big drive via FC, SAS or iSCSI, like the HP StorageWorks MSA2000, Infortrends EonStore series or many different other models from different manufacturers.
Is it possible to create such a device with Linux, a few disks and an FC controller, using the controller in the reverse direction than usual?
This would come handy to test some ideas and concepts in an emerging SAN environment.
When opening a new window in finder, the new window will go below the screen. This is not a big deal, but when using macvim or terminal it can be annoying since your command prompt is now hidden. Firefox seems to be smarter, it never overlaps below the screen.
Same deal for the right hand side of the screen, windows often open with their right edge cut off. Is there any way to prevent this?
I'd really love for my small business to migrate to Google Apps, mostly for the email. However, the big roadblock for me is the lack of any sort of shared inbox support (sales@... support@...) that would let multiple salespeople or support reps handle the incoming messages to the shared inbox in a consistent, graceful manner.
Any recommendations for a similar service, or any add-on services to Google Apps that allows this?

I know I can base on tutorials that I can find on net, but there are confusing, and I know there are some of Postgres gurus here.
My hardware:
2x Intel Xeon E5645 2,40 GHz / 32 GB of RAM / 2xSAS for pg_xlog (RAID1) + 3x2 SAS for rest (RAID10) + BBU and 512 MB of cache.
It's gonna be used for one web project, with some big (relative term :P) tables (20mil+ of records).
Server is dedicated to Posgtres service. I need help with configuring it - work_mem, effective_cache_size etc.
There isn't much room on server chassis and I'm wondering where a label with the servers name should go? Is there any other information in addition to the name that should go on the label? Does it make sense to label each hard drive in a server or is that not necessary?
There certainly is overkill, when I worked at Big Blue labeling was a huge source of bureaucracy, even a projector needed to be labelled and have it's whereabouts routinely reported.
Speaking big picture, what are the benefits of Lotus Notes over exchange. Is exchange meant for smaller companies who don't want to spend a lot of time maintaining their systems... but not as scalable? Is lotus notes more secure?
I have an unencrypted DVD that is one big title, ie you cannot skip next / prev. What I want to do is reauthor the DVD with title at certain points, so that I can skip next / prev when watching it.
I'm using Ubuntu 8.10
I've upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion before. Now, I'm going to Mavericks.
I'm tired of downloading these big installers every time I have to use them. The installers are deleted after using them as far as my experience is concerned.
Where can I find these installers after downloading them from the App Store so that I can copy them and use them in the future? Looking up over the internet did not help.
There is a particular program that I use that whenever it starts up, its window is always too big. I always have to resize it to make it smaller. Is there a way I can control the size of the window when it starts up?
I'm writing one of those things where you have to provide a list of all the tables and pictures at the beginning of the text. I know how to insert caption for a picture, but I'm not sure as to how can I do that for a table or some miscellaus object, in a way that I can get a list of them all afterwards ?
Can anyone give a hint or two ?
Usually I do these things manually, but this document is getting big.
If you turn on encryption in SAP between the client and the server using the Secure Network Connection, then is there a load placed on the server to do all the encryption work? How big a load? Is it equivalent to the difference between HTTP and HTTPS on a web server?
I have a simple question:
is there any way in wireshark to avoid resolution of protocol besides the protocol of layer 3 ?
For example, in the column protocol, instead of showing http, I want it to show TCP or it's value (6).
I can see in menu analyse / enabled protocols we can disable one by one, but for very big traces with lots of differente protocols like "eDonkey" "QUAKE" etc, it's costs a lot of time...
