<b>Royal Pingdom:</b> "So what kind of code names are developers out there coming up with? Here is a collection of code names for software products from companies like Google, Microsoft, Apple, Canonical, Red Hat, Adobe, Mozilla, Automattic and more."
I just realized that Bingbot is crawling my company's website's pages over https. Bing already crawls the site over http, so this seems frivolous. Is there a way to specify Disallow: / for https only?
According to Wikipedia, each protocol has its own robots.txt
And according to Google's Robots.txt Specification, the robots.txt applies to http AND https
I don't want to Disallow: / for Bing totally, just over https.
I am curious to know why do companies hand you a blank paper and ask you to write code? This confuses me, because these days intellisense, google, stackoverflow etc are common sources to look up syntax and / or IDE gives you a colored indicator if your syntax is wrong.
I usually get stressed out during these situations. I am curious to know opinions of other developers. I am posting this on this forum, hoping to get helpful feedback from other experienced developers.

Search engines represent the central exchange for the Internet. Millions access Google, Bing and Yahoo each day on the hunt for information. These sites represent a portal for visitors to pass through on their online voyage.
I have placed the facebook "like" and some other social bookmarking websites link on my blog, such as Google Buzz, Digg, Twitter, etc.
I just noticed that it takes a while to load my blog page as it need to load the data from the social networking sites (such as number of likes etc).
How can I place the links efficiently so that first my blog content loads, and meanwhile it loads data from these websites -- in other words, these sharing widgets should not hang my blog page while waiting for data from external sites?
I am starting a new website for a local business and have entries listed for it on places like urbanspoon, yelp, google+ local, etc. I am thinking of listing these citation sites on my business website to encourage visitors of my site to go and review the business on those sites. If I dofollow I will pass link juice to my page on that site, but doesn't that mean that the very very little PR juice I have will be leached away from me? Is it better to nofollow them?

I wish to know if there is a tool like this to replace windows explorer and similar in the work of managing files, specially those web-site structures that sometimes can get very big. I am asking it here because I sincerely do not know what terms to use in Google to find anything like it.
It is like a diagram, but showing the tree directory structure and the contents of every folder at the same time, not just the one that is in focus.

What tools, free or otherwise do you use to help you with your "webmastering"
I'm thinking along the lines of, Link checking, analytics, web stats, page validation, plus anything else you can think of!
Personally I use: webmasters tools, google analytics, AWstats
I'm looking for anything (free or paid) which maybe hovering under my radar which could be of use.
(edit - missed a couple of words out of first line!)
I was thinking about a live editing environment where code / a source file is synchronized so that, changes made by one user would be carried across to all others editing the file.
Something like Google Wave, but for code.
Could this kind of an environment be better for the code, as changes are shared instantly?
(with revision-control, of course)
Has anyone tried (or has had a need for) using a shared environment for code?
Search engine optimization is simply the art and science of getting your website to rank well on top search sites like Yahoo!, Google, MSN and Bing. Here are 5 search engine optimization management tips.
I'm looking for a script, functioning like the Google homepage that fetches data from a database rather than the internet.
This is not intended to be a search engine, but a repository of jokes that can be pulled depending on the keywords typed. No sophisticated search techniques are required - keyword based is perfectly fine.
If some mechanism of up/down-voting jokes can be incorporated, that would be fantastic, but I'm presuming that will be an entirely different game.
Link building for an SEO site is a daunting task especially at the very beginning. It becomes a puzzle just where to start from and the directional drift that the link will profitably make. All this can be solved by web browsing through exploratory channels like Google that will give an idea of where to direct the attention. For example a basic approach can be in terms of finding out about how many hits the chosen brand name that one is building links to, receives on a daily basis.
I've been a software developer for 8 years.
I've worked on about 20 projects, some smaller, some bigger.
I know how to help myself by using google magic, msdn, youttube, tutorials, how-to's etc.
I'm playing around with the idea to get a friend of mine (who has been a software-developer for 5 years) and start my own software-developer-company.
What do you think are the preconditions to get myself from a freelancer to owning my own little company with 2-3 employees?
I have an AJAX site and I'm using shebangs (#!) in my urls with the intention of then providing the correct HTML versions when google bots replace the #! with _escaped_fragment_.
How do I go about routing/proxying/redirecting the url with _escaped_fragment_ to the corresponding html pages? I can't find documentation on this part of the process specifically, and my first thought was that I should be using a 301 or 302 redirect, but I was told that wasn't the case, albeit not given any more info.
