  • Open Source ASP.NET Contact Management Application?

    - by davemackey
I'm considering building a Church Management System (ChMS), essentially a CRM, but specifically tailored for churches. I've looked at several existing CRM and open source ChMS solutions but have not been satisfied with any of them. Before I start writing something from the ground up - I was wondering if anyone was aware of an open source asp.net application that might be a good fit for this project? Particularly, the application needs to perform CRUD and optimally allow for dynamic user-based creation/editing of fields associated with contacts etc.

  • Web-Frameworks for Education Management Systems?

    - by Indebi
So, I'm working on an idea and I'll go into a brief overview of that but my question is, What are some good web frameworks for this situation? I have some experience in the following languages: C# Python I have considerably more experience in C# than Python, however I am expecting to learn new things. My idea is this, a completely web-based community-oriented Education Management System that focuses on making students and teachers day-to-day lives easier. For students it will provide a centralized place for them to do homework, study for tests, and reinforce concepts learned previously in class. For teachers it will give them a centralized place to handle assignments, attendance, homework, tests, and all other major parts of classroom management. All of that, but in a community-oriented fashion. Everything a teacher does is shared and open to constructive criticism, allowing other teachers to use their assignments/tests and for students or other teachers to comment, rate and criticize their assignments. This encourages an environment of openness that will allow teacher's to focus on teaching and student's to focus on learning. And that community wouldn't be limited to one school or school-district, this system would be completely school-independent. Please note that I have no problem with hearing constructive criticism on this idea, however I would prefer if this post was more focused on my question. I have somewhat explored about the following options: Django ASP.NET Ruby on Rails Silverlight (1) I have Django installed and I played with it for a little bit, I really like how easy setting up databases are and how it handles the database completely for you. I don't really know how to use it very well and I don't quite understand the Model-View-Controller paradigm(?) for it yet but I haven't thought about it much. I also like the fact that it uses Python. (2) I don't really like Visual Studio for developing in ASP.NET, I hate the way the web-designer works and it just feels clunky and old. I like the server-side development part though. I don't like how expensive ASP.NET and overall Visual Studio is, even if I do get it for free for now using DreamSpark (3) I haven't been able to explore much with this, I could not get Rails (or maybe Ruby) properly installed. I first installed it within RadRails and that didn't work so I uninstalled RadRails and then installed the latest version of Ruby off the official Windows Installer and then installed Ruby on Rails through gem and even after all that it still didn't work, so I installed Netbeans and attempted to use it there but it still did not work (4) I like Silverlight in some extents, I've played with this one the most, it's very similar to WPF (which I've used the most) in a lot of ways but I don't like how database connectivity works, at least in comparison to Django. I also dislike how expensive everything with Microsoft is, even if I get it for free for now with DreamSpark. I would like to hear some suggestions from experienced web-developers as to what I should use and why, or at least what some good options are for my scenario Your help would be very appreciated

  • Content management system similar to StackOverflow.com

    - by Ghostrider
I'm looking content management system that would have features similar to stackoverflow: Users can ask and answer/questions. Users can search within existing threads. The system is access controlled - so some users can be readers/writers/admins. Some or all QnA threads should be visible only to logged in users. So far I've mostly used wordpress as CMS but it looks like it's not well-suited for this particular task

Hi everyone, I am currently working on a project and i would like my users to be able to backup/restore theirs accounts. Thanks per advance, Cédric.

  • How do these user/userParam references relate to the Customer and Account lookups?

    - by plath
    In the following code example how do the user/userParam references relate to the Customer and Account lookups and what is the relationship between Customer and Account? // PersistenceManager pm = ...; Transaction tx = pm.currentTransaction(); User user = userService.currentUser(); List<Account> accounts = new ArrayList<Account>(); try { tx.begin(); Query query = pm.newQuery("select from Customer " + "where user == userParam " + "parameters User userParam"); List<Customer> customers = (List<Customer>) query.execute(user); query = pm.newQuery("select from Account " + "where parent-pk == keyParam " + "parameters Key keyParam"); for (Customer customer : customers) { accounts.addAll((List<Account>) query.execute(customer.key)); } } finally { if (tx.isActive()) { tx.rollback(); } }

  • Changing a limited user account in XP fails

    - by javamonkey79
I have the following: using System; using System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagement; public class ChangePassword { public static void Main() { PrincipalContext context = new PrincipalContext(ContextType.Machine); UserPrincipal user = UserPrincipal.FindByIdentity(context, "someLimitedAccount"); user.ChangePassword( "xxx", "zzz" ); } } This works just fine with administrator accounts, but seems to crash like so when I try to change limited accounts in XP: Unhandled Exception: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at ChangePassword.Main() Is what I am trying to do possible? If so, how? EDIT #1: I added the following: Console.WriteLine( "user: " + user ); Below this line: UserPrincipal user = UserPrincipal.FindByIdentity(context, "someLimitedAccount"); And I get this: user: It doesn't look like user is null when I print it, but then again I'm not really a .Net guy - I seem to remember this being expected behavior.

  • Saving highscores coupled to a facebook account

    - by Eiko
I want to offer a "highscore" list for friends in my app (at this point iPhone/iPad), so that if the user connected to facebook, he will get a list with his/her friends scores. Connecting is easy, retrieving friends is easy, but figuring out the best way to store the scores is not. As it seems I need to the store the scores on my own server server, no big deal. But what is considered a reasonable safe way to transfer the data? When communicating with facebook, authentication is clear - but communicating with my server basically anyone could post scores for another user if I send user id and score. Obfuscation might help a bit, but is there any better way to make sure that the data comes from the fb-logged-in person? Scores can also go down, so changing scores for other persons won't necessary help them. Thanks :)

  • Who do you use for a merchant account?

    - by Josh
Hi everyone, I was hoping to get an idea of the merchant accounts out there and if there are any strong recommendations for one in particular. I would also appreciate advice on how merchant accounts differ. Please use separate answers for each recommendation so that we can take full advantage of the voting system. Thanks!

  • How to store account-specific information in ASP.NET MVC 2

    - by PR_
I have an ASP.NET MVC 2 web application. There are two tables like "FIRST_KIND_OF_USERS" and "SECOND_KIND_OF_USERS". Both are mapped to the default aspnet_users table via UserId column. Each of them has it's own integer primary key column like "FirstKindOfUsersId". When a user is trying to add some data to the database, for instance, "Create a new Task" I would like to add a new row in Tasks table with "FirstKindOfUsersId" value. Where should I store or get this value? At the moment I have these possible solutions: Get "FirstKindOfUsersId" value by User.Identity.Name each time; Use SESSION[] for storing these values (Where and when should I save these ones?) Use FormsAuthenticationTicket and create own custom IIdentity class. (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1064271/asp-net-mvc-set-custom-iidentity-or-iprincipal) Which approach is better? And if I pick the 3rd one, how to save the necessary data property and at which stage?

  • Javascript timezone solution needed(taking into account the actual difference in UTC timestamps)

    - by user198729
I have unix timestamps from time zone X which is not known, the current timestamp(now()) in TZ X is known 1275143019, how to approach a javascript function so that it can generate the datetime in the users current TZ in the format 2010-05-29 15:32:35 ? UPDATE I'm not a unix timestamp expert,if unix timestamp is always the same in different TZ, then I have to change the question a little,so that the current datetime in TZ X is known(like 2010-05-29 22:32:28),and the other datetime is also in this format, how to convert them to the user's TZ based on the difference between now() ? UPDATE Something strange from MySQL: On server: mysql> select now(); +---------------------+ | now() | +---------------------+ | 2010-05-29 18:34:30 | +---------------------+ 1 row in set (0.00 sec) mysql> select UNIX_TIMESTAMP(); +------------------+ | UNIX_TIMESTAMP() | +------------------+ | 1275143674 | +------------------+ 1 row in set (0.00 sec) On local: mysql> select now(); +---------------------+ | now() | +---------------------+ | 2010-05-29 22:41:30 | +---------------------+ 1 row in set (0.00 sec) mysql> select UNIX_TIMESTAMP(); +------------------+ | UNIX_TIMESTAMP() | +------------------+ | 1275144091 | +------------------+ 1 row in set (0.00 sec) Why the difference between now() (2010-05-29 22:41:30-2010-05-29 18:34:30=6hours) and UNIX_TIMESTAMP() (1275144091 - 1275143674 = 417seconds) is not the same ?
