  • Ubuntu Lock Screen Conflict with Google Chrome

    - by S.K.
I don't know if this is a "feature" or not, but when I lock my screen in Ubuntu (GNOME 3), if Google Chrome needs to show a JavaScript alert (like if I set a reminder for an event in Google Calendar), Chrome will show up on top of the lock screen. If you'd like to simulate it, try running this JSFiddle, just click on the green box and lock your screen before the alert shows up - http://jsfiddle.net/skoshy/ZYSYr/ Anyone know how to fix/avoid this?

  • Cell Transitions in Excel 2013 Preview–Fixed

    - by simonsabin
If you’ve downloaded Excel 2013 and been working with it you may have noticed the new cell transition feature. Not sure why they put it in, it feels a bit like the aero interface which I understand has been dropped in windows 8. What you may have found is that the transition is buggy, Excel hangs, of the transition is jumpy. Well I found the fix on http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_home-excel/hardware-acceleration-problem-with-excel-2013/894da202-48c0-4442-a371-955587c1b7c0 For...(read more)

  • SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 2 Cumulative Update #1 is available!

    - by AaronBertrand
The SQL Server team has released SQL Server 2012 SP2 Cumulative Update #1. This cumulative updates Service Pack 2 to include the fixes from SP1 CU#10 and a few from CU#11, including the fix for the online index rebuild corruption issue I discussed recently on SQLPerformance.com . It also marks the first time in the SQL Server 2012 timeframe that both cumulative update branches are on roughly the same schedule, which makes many of us happy I'm sure. :-) KB Article: KB #2976982 Build # is 11.0.5532...(read more)

  • What is a clean Agile (Scrum) Sprint Presentation?

    - by negarnil
Suppose someone of your development team is presenting a sprint to the customer but he is having web connection problems such that a complete story cannot be presented. For the sake of the cleanness of the presentation, do you help your colleague suggesting possible solutions and try to fix it in the moment? Or is it kind of messy? May be the customer (who is "part" of the team) will understand? Why?

  • recover from sudo rm -rf command

    - by user106116
By mistake, I ended up executing "rm -rf /" command from sudo on my laptop which erased many files before it stopped. Now when I restarted my system , it gives a GRUB rescue prompt. I am having dual boot with Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7 I request the help for following: How do I fix the currently installed Ubuntu without overwriting/erasing the left over files (from rm -rf command)? Is using Boot-Repair safe ? Is there a way to directly go to Windows 7?

  • Interim Patches for CVE-2011-4313 released through MOS

    - by Alan
As reported on the article on the Sun Security Blog, interim patches are available for Solaris 8,9 and 10 directly from MOS without the need to log a Service Request. There is also Interim Relief available for Solaris 11, but at this point in time that will still require a Service Request. As seen from running "named -V", these patches implement the same fix as ISC by taking Bind to the version:BIND 9.6-ESV-R5-P1.

  • POSH-y SQL Disk Space Monitoring

    - by merrillaldrich
In a prior post I expressed my dismay that apparently Operations Manager (which I dig in other respects) has no love for SQL Server storage that uses mount points. Herewith, henceforth, forthwith is a PowerShell workaround I am using until I find out I am wrong, or there’s a management pack fix. The crux of the issue, I think, is that SQL Server itself has basically no visibility to the disks mounted using mount points, and that blind spot carries through to the management pack. That much is well...(read more)

  • Kernel Panic Troubleshooting For Dummies

    - by iamsid
I have made Ubuntu my primary OS since 10.04, and I have converted many of my friends and neighbors into Ubuntu users since then. I am the fix-it guy they approach when they encounter problems. The most frantic calls I get are when they encounter an "update-induced kernel panic." (Many human beings are allergic to command-line interfaces and search engines.) What are the step-by-step procedures to resolve an "update-induced kernel panic"?

  • EntLib 5 install gets error “The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation.

    - by Stan Spotts
I got this when I tried to install the source code on Windows Server 2008 R2, and this was an issue with EntLib 4.0 as well. The solution is the same now as it was then, but since I had a new OS install I didn't recreate the fix. I had to add a registry key: DisableMSI REG_DWORD value 0 It goes here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer The description for this key is here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa368304(VS.85).aspx

  • Getting a virus is *very* annoying

    - by bconlon
I spent most of yesterday removing an annoying virus from my PC. I feel slightly foolish for getting one in the first place, but after so many years I guess I was always going to eventually succumb. I was also a little surprised at the failure of various tools at removing it. The virus would redirect the browser to websites including ‘licosearch’, ‘hugosearch’ and ‘facebook’, and the disk would be thrashing away infecting dlls in some way. I had the full up to date version of McAfee installed. This identified that there was an issue in some dlls on the system and was able to ‘fix’ them. But they kept getting re-infected. So I installed Microsoft Security Essentials and this too was able to identify and ‘fix’ the infected dlls. The system scans take forever and I really expected better results. I also tried Malwarebytes, Hitman Pro, AVG and Sophos to no avail. Eventually I thought I’d investigate myself. It turned out that on reboot, the virus would start 3 instances of Firefox.exe which I’m guessing would do bad things including infecting as many dlls on the system as possible. I removed Firefox and the virus cleverly then launched 3 instances of Chrome! So I uninstalled Chrome and yes, it then started to launch 3 instances of iexplore.exe. If I’m honest, by this stage I was just seeing if it would be able to use any of the browsers! As it was starting these on reboot, I looked in my User Startup folder and there was a <randomly named>.exe and several log files. I deleted these and rebooted. When I looked they had been recreated. So I then looked in the registry Run and RunOnce entries: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. Sure enough there were entries to run a file in C:\Program Files\<random name folder>\<random name file>.exe. I deleted this and rebooted and it was fixed. I also looked in the event log and found a warning that Winlogon had failed to start the file C:\Program Files\<random name folder>\<random name file>.exe So I also checked HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon and this entry had also been changed. Finally I ran a full system scan to clean up any infected dlls. I hope it’s gone for good!  #

  • Enabling Nvidia driver messes up splash screen

    - by neziric
When you boot from live CD, or doing the first boot after installing Ubuntu, splash screen looks awesome. But as soon as you enable nvidia-current driver, installed with apt-get, splash screen goes all crazy. With crazy I mean that resolution is very low, font(I assume) is very weird and it all looks like it's been broken. This happened with 10.04 and now again with 10.10. How do I fix splash screen after enabling nvidia drivers?

  • Yahoo media player not working with Ruby on rails

    - by luca590
I have a yahoo media player embedded in my webpage. I am currently using Ruby on Rails to create/edit my web page. When i click the play button next to a track the YMP waits a while and then goes to the next track without playing the first one. I then get a warning on my second (last) track that its file could not be found. Does anyone has a better recommendation for an audio player or a way to fix this one?
