    How can I measure programmatically (not query the OS, but measure) the size and order of associativity of L1 and L2 caches (data caches)? Assumptions about system: It has L1 and L2 cache (may be L3 too, may be cache sharing), It may have a hardware prefetch unit (just like P4+), It has a stable clocksource (tickcounter or good HPET for gettimeofday). There are no assumptions about OS (it can be Linux, Windows, or something non-standard), and we can't use POSIX queries. Language is C. And compiler optimizations may be disabled.

  • Turn a number into star rating display using jQuery and CSS

    I have been looking at jquery plugin and was wondering how to adapt that plugin to turn a number (like 4.8618164) into a 4.8618164 stars filled out of 5. Basically interpreting a number <5 into stars filled in a 5-star rating system using jQuery/JS/CSS. Note that this would only display/show the stars rating from an already available number and not accept new ratings submissions. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Is there an easy way to disable Python egg caching? We have the situation where a system account needs to run a python program which imports a module. Since this is a non-login robot account, it does not have a home directory, and dies trying to create the directory /.python-eggs. What's the best way to fix this? Can I convert my eggs in site-files to something which will not be cached in .python-eggs?

  • What Date Format Should I Send When Using Oracle.DataAcess.

    Converting from usind Micorsofts Syste.Data.OracleClient to what I believe is called Oracles ODT (Oracle.DataAccess 10.2.0.100). When I try and send a date I get this error "ORA-1858: a non-numeric character was found where a numeric was expected".   • Is there a way that WCF service can know which machine the call comes from?

    Hi, I have a WCF service and without changing any code on the client side, is there a way that I can know the detail information of the caller, such as the MachineName, and ApplicationName? Basically, I cannot change the client code to pass those pieces of information over. I tried to use System.Web.HttpContext on the server side to track this information, but HttpContext.Current is NULL. I guess that is not the proper usage of it. Any suggestion? Thanks Sarah

The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding." error messages reported by the users. The application's DAL opens a connection, reads or saves data, and closes it. No connections are ever left open - intentionally! There is nothing obvious on the Windows 2000 Server hosting the SQL Server 2000 that would indicate a problem. Nothing in the Event Logs and nothing in the SQL Server logs. The timeouts happen randomly - I cannot reproduce. It happens early in the day with only 1 to 5 users in the system. It also happens with around 50 users in the system. The most connections to SQL Server via Performance Monitor, for all databases, has been about 74. The timeouts happen in code that both saves to, and reads from, the database in different parts of the application. The stack trace does not point to one or two offending DAL functions. It's happened in many different places. Does my ADO.NET code appear to be able to leak connections? I've goolged around a bit, and I've read that if the connection pool fills up, this can happen. However, I'm not explicitly setting any connection pooling. I've even tried to increase the Connection Timeout in the connection string, but timeouts happen long before the 300 second (5 minute) value: <add name="MyConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=MyServer;Initial Catalog=MyDatabase;Integrated Security=SSPI;Connection Timeout=300;"/> I'm at a total loss already as to what is causing these Timeout issues. Any ideas are appreciated.

  • Creating an empty Drawable in Android

    Creating a Drawable that is completely empty seems like a common need, as a place holder, initial state, etc., but there doesn't seem to be a good way to do this... at least in XML. Several places refer to the system resource @android:drawable/empty but as far as I can tell (i.e., it's not in the reference docs, and aapt chokes saying that it can't find the resource) this doesn't exist. Is there a general way of referencing an empty Drawable, or do you end up creating a fake empty PNG for each project?

    Ruby Enterprise Edition fails to compile from sources with GCC 4.5, but sucessfully compiles with 4.3.3. Actually, not sure if it's about GCC, but, in fact, i686 Arch linux system with laest updates won't compile RE.     Hi Guys, I'm relatively new with WPF. I'm trying to understand the difference between MouseDownEvent and PreviewMouseDownEvent. I understand the WPF event strategies and i understand that the MouseDown event is a bubbling event and the PreviewMouseDown is a tunneling event. I also understand the order of which these events are being fired - according to this MSDN overview http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms742806.aspx#routing (there is a diagram with example there). According to the MSDN overview (in the link above), if i have 3 elements then the events route should be as follows: PreviewMouseDown (tunnel) on root element. PreviewMouseDown (tunnel) on intermediate element #1. PreviewMouseDown (tunnel) on source element #2. MouseDown (bubble) on source element #2. MouseDown (bubble) on intermediate element #1. MouseDown (bubble) on root element. So I expected the the message boxes to be shown according to the above. From some reason - which I don't understand only the preview events are being thrown (according to what the MSDN says Preview_B1=Preview_B2=Preview_B3). My expectations were: Preview_B1=Preview_B2=Preview_B3=NonPreview_B3=NonPreview_B2=NonPreview_B1. But the non-preview events are not being thrown at all. So basically I don't understand the route of the events, from MSDN overview I understood that the route starts from the root element, goes down (tunnel) to the source element and then back up (bubble) to the root element, but this is not what happening in practice.     According to SICP section 1.2.6, exercise 1.22: Most Lisp implementations include a primitive called runtime that returns an integer that specifies the amount of time the system has been running (measured, for example, in microseconds). I'm using DrScheme, where runtime doesn't seem to be available, so I'm looking for a good substitute. I found in the PLT-Scheme Reference that there is a current-milliseconds primitive. Does anyone know if there's a timer in Scheme with better resolution?

I know they are working because there are entries for touching the web.config or /bin files. We also ran a memory overload test and can trigger an OutOfMemoryException which is caught in Application_Error. We are trying to determine whether the virtual memory limit is causing the recycling. We have added GC.GetTotalMemory(false) throughout the code, but this is for all of .Net, not just our App´s pool, correct? We've also tried var oPerfCounter = new PerformanceCounter(); oPerfCounter.CategoryName = "Process"; oPerfCounter.CounterName = "Virtual Bytes"; oPerfCounter.InstanceName = "iisExpress"; logger.Debug("Virtual Bytes: " + oPerfCounter.RawValue + " bytes"); but don't have permission in shared hosting. I've monitored the app on a dev server with the same requests that caused the recycles in production with ANTS Memory Profiler attached and can't seem to find a culprit. We have also run it with a debugger attached in dev to check for uncaught exceptions in spawned threads that might cause the app to abort. My questions are these: How can I effectively monitor memory usage in shared hosting to tell how much my application is consuming prior to an application recycle? Why are the Application_[End/OnEnd/Error] handlers in global.asax not being called? How else can I determine what is causing these recycles? Thanks.
