  • Is it ok to put any existing open-source project into github?

    This question is more about Open-Source etiquette, and the new approach that the likes of github and gitorious gives to collaboration and source ownership. Can you just take any Open-Source project from somewhere else (e.g SourceForge, with a clear project team and community) and put it into your own github repository, provided that you respect the terms of the original license? And if yes, do you keep your version under the same name, or change it? I somehow have this nagging feeling that this is rude, and yet it is open-source after all...

  • jQuery Filtering Gridview Columns

    I'm looking to have a click event for all columns but the last column of a GridView and then have a separate click event for the last column of the gridview (a DropDownList). I have the following right now but just can't seem to get it to exclude the last column: var _activeRow; $('.gridview-jquerify tr').filter(function() { return $('td', this).length && !$('table', this).length }) .bind('click', function(e) { if (_activeRow) _activeRow.removeClass('gridviewrow-highlighted'); _activeRow = $(this).addClass('gridviewrow-highlighted'); $(this).each(function() { var myID = $(this).find('.gridview-cell-hide').html(); __doPostBack('MyUpdatePanel', myID); }); }); Then I can't seem to get a variation of the above to work for the last column by doing a filter using :last in the selector such as: $('.gridview-jquerify tr >td:last').filter(function() { return $('td)', this).length && !$('table', this).length })

  • Is there a semi-standard way to associate a URL with an IRC user?

    I'm in the process of doing some identity consolidation, so I'm providing URLs to me at various locations on the internet. I'm quite active on IRC, so this naturally lead me to wonder whether there was a way to provide a link to my IRC presence. This lead to me finding http://www.w3.org/Addressing/draft-mirashi-url-irc-01.txt which appears to be a draft of an RFC for associating URLs with IRC, which suggests that I would be irc://irc.freenode.net/DRMacIver,isnick Which seems a little on the lame side. Further, this RFC draft has very thoroughly expired (February 28 1997). On the other hand it seems to be implemented in chatzilla at least: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/rt-messaging/chatzilla/irc-urls.html So does anyone know if there's a superseding RFC and/or any other de facto standard for this?

    I'm building a windows mobile app. And using SqlCe. I'm looking for a good sql query builder. So instead of writing "SELECT COLUMNS FROM TABLE WHERE etc... Is there a good free library that can build this sort of query? EDIT: You know when you write your code with ADO.net something like this SqlCeCommand command = new SqlCeCommand(Connection); command.CommandText = "SELECT * FROM Orders WHERE customerId = @customerId"; Well i'm looking for some library that could build that SELECT statement using classes instead of writing it through string.   • SSRS 2008 and SSAS 2008 transport error

    I am testing an upgrade to SSAS 2008 and verifying existing reports working properly. I am able to get some SSRS reports that are using SSAS as a datasource to run without any issues. They are simple and only have a single dataset. The reports that I am unable to get to work correctly against SSAS 2008 have multiple datasets and have a fitler setup with a data range setup as a parameter. As soon as I setup that filter as a parameter and deploy them the report returns a "The connection either timed out or was lost. Unable to read data from the transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host" message. The funny thing is that the report works fine when I run it locally in BIDS and it works fine once deployed if I point it to a SSAS 2005 server. Once I point it to the SSAS 2008 server it fails. I can get other reports to work fine, but not the ones with this type of a filter setup. I can see that the start and end date parameter MDX statements get run in the trace, but that is it. After those run then we receive the transport connection message. Another funny thing is that in the production environment the reports are working fine, but that has SSRS 2005 and SSAS 2008. Does this make sense? What could be causing this? I have tried setting the single transaction level on the datasource too, but that does not seem to make a difference.

    I need to Convert a CSV into an XML document. The examples I have seen so far, all show how to do this with a fixed number of columns in the CSV. I have this so far, using LINQ: String[] File = File.ReadAllLines(@"C:\text.csv"); String xml = ""; XElement top = new XElement("TopElement", from items in File let fields = items.Split(';') select new XElement("Item", new XElement("Column1", fields[0]), new XElement("Column2", fields[1]), new XElement("Column3", fields[2]), new XElement("Column4", fields[3]), new XElement("Column5", fields[4]) ) ); File.WriteAllText(@"C:\xmlout.xml", xml + top.ToString()); This is for a fixed amount of columns, but my .CSV has a different number of columns on each line. How would you fit some sort of loop into this, depending on how many words (columns) there are in each line of the .CSV? Thnx

  • What should the standard be for ReSTful URLS?

    Since I can't find a chuffing job, I've been reading up on ReST and creating web services. The way I've interpreted it, the future is all about creating a web service for all your data before you build the web app. Which seems like a good idea. However, there seems to be a lot of contradictory thoughts on what the best scheme is for ReSTful URLs. Some people advocate simple pretty urls http://api.myapp.com/resource/1 In addition, some people like to add the API version to the url like so http://api.myapp.com/v1/resource/1 And to make things even more confusing, some people advocate adding the content-type to get requests http://api.myapp.com/v1/resource/1.xml http://api.myapp.com/v1/resource/1.json http://api.myapp.com/v1/resource/1.txt Whereas others think the content-type should be sent in the HTTP header. Soooooooo.... That's a lot of variation, which has left me unsure of what the best URL scheme is. I personally see the merits of the most comprehensive URL that includes a version number, resource locator and content-type, but I'm new to this so I could be wrong. On the other hand, you could argue that you should do "whatever works best for you". But that doesn't really fit with the ReST mentality as far as I can tell since the aim is to have a standard. And since a lot of you people will have more experience than me with ReST, I thought I'd ask for some guidance. So, with all that in mind... What should the standard be for ReSTful URLS?

  • Do complex JOINs cause high coupling and maintenance problems ?

    Our project has ~40 tables with complex relations.A colleague believes in using long join queries which enforces me to learn about tables outside of my module but I think I should not concern about tables not directly related to my module and use data access functions (written by those responsible for other modules) when I need data from them. Let me clarify: I am responsible for the ContactVendor module which enables the customers to contact the vendor and start a conversation about some specific product. Products module has it's own complex tables and relations with functions that encapsulate details (for example i18n, activation, product availability etc ...). Now I need to show the product title of some product related to some conversation between the vendor and customers. I may either write a long query that retrieves the product info along with conversation stuff in one shot (which enforces me to learn about Product tables) OR I may pass the relevant product_id to the get_product_info(int) function. First approach is obviously demanding and introduces many bad practices and things I normally consider fault in programming. The problem with the second approach seems to be the countless mini queries these access functions cause and performance loss is a concern when a loop tries to fetch product titles for 100 products using functions that each perform a separate query. So I'm stuck between "don't code to the implementation, code to interface" and performance. What is the right way of doing things ? UPDATE: I'm specially concerned about possible future modifications to those tables outside of my module. What if the Products module decided to change the way they are doing things? or for some reason modify the schema? It means some other modules would break or malfunction until the change is integrated to them. The usual ripple effect problem.

I've searched google on how to do this but all i could find was this. I would like to register any web service and not create a web reference, as suggested in the solution i've found. How is this done without using a web reference?

    I have created folders in my root example: http://www.zipholidays.co.uk/Cuba or http://www.zipholidays.co.uk/Florida When I type http://www.zipholidays.co.uk/cuba (Cube in lowercase), it shows page not found. I'm using Apache server. People are linking to pages with lowercase, uppercase, mixed case - whatever. What do I do to make the pages case insensitive?

How are you supposed to do that? Should I try to send some kind of logout event or something?   • How do I set up a shared directory on Linux?

    I have a linux server I want to use to share files between users in my company. Users will access the machine with sftp or secure shell. Here is what I have: cd /home ls -l drwxrwsr-x 5 userA staff 4096 Jul 22 15:00 shared (other listings omitted) I want all users in the staff group to be able to create, modify, delete any file and/or directory in the shared folder. I don't want anyone else to have access to the folder at all. I have: Added the users to the staff group by modifying /etc/group and running grpconv to update /etc/gshadow Run chown -R userA.staff /home/shared Run chmod -R 2775 /home/shared Now, users in the staff group can create new files but they aren't allowed to open the existing files in the directory for edit. I suspect this is due to the primary group id associated with each user which is still set to be the group created when the user was created. So, the PGID of user 'userA' is 'userA'. I'd rather not change the primary group of the users to 'staff' if I can help it but if it is the easiest option, I would consider it. And, a variation on a theme, I'd like to do this same thing with another directory but also allow the apache user to read files in the directory and serve them. What's the best way to set this up?

  • How realistic/easy is it to host our own web servers?

    It is increasingly looking like we will need to host our own servers, because we need modems physically attached to the server machines. I (think) we will need a T1 line to our office for starters. Dont know what else is involved other than the obvious redundancy and failover requirements. My questions are: Do we really have to do it our selves or can we find a service that allows the modems to be remote as well? If we have to host the servers ourselves, what are the steps (technical and operational) required?
