• Can someone please explain Cursor in android ?

- by Prabhat
Can some one explain how the cursor exactly works ? Or the flow of the following part of the code ? I know that this is sub activity and all but I did not understand how Cursor works exactly. final Uri data = Uri.parse("content://contacts/people/"); final Cursor c = managedQuery(data, null, null, null, null); String[] from = new String[] { People.NAME }; int[] to = new int[] { R.id.itemTextView }; SimpleCursorAdapter adapter = new SimpleCursorAdapter(this,R.layout.listitemlayout, c, from, to); ListView lv = (ListView) findViewById(R.id.contactListView); lv.setAdapter(adapter); lv.setOnItemClickListener(new OnItemClickListener() { public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> parent, View view, int pos, long id) { c.moveToPosition(pos); int rowId = c.getInt(c.getColumnIndexOrThrow("_id")); Uri outURI = Uri.parse(data.toString() + rowId); Intent outData = new Intent(); outData.setData(outURI); setResult(Activity.RESULT_OK, outData); finish(); } }); Thanks.

• MySql too many connections

- by MichaelMcCabe
I hate to bring up a question which is widely asked on the web, but I cant seem to solve it. I started a project a while back and after a month of testing, I hit a "Too many connections" error. I looked into it, and "Solved" it by increasing the max_connections. This then worked. Since then more and more people started to use it, and it hit again. When I am the only user on the site, i type "show processlist" and it comes up with about 50 connections which are still open (saying "Sleep" in the command). Now, I dont know enough to speculate why these are open, but in my code I tripple checked and every connection I open, I close. ie. public int getSiteIdFromName(String name, String company)throws DataAccessException,java.sql.SQLException{ Connection conn = this.getSession().connection(); Statement smt = conn.createStatement(); ResultSet rs=null; String query="SELECT id FROM site WHERE name='"+name+"' and company_id='"+company+"'"; rs=smt.executeQuery(query); rs.next(); int id=rs.getInt("id"); rs.close(); smt.close(); conn.close(); return id; } Every time I do something else on the site, another load of connections are opened and not closed. Is there something wrong with my code? and if not, what could be the problem?

• Does complex JOINs causes high coupling and maintenance problems ?

- by ashkan.kh.nazary
Our project has ~40 tables with complex relations.A colleague believes in using long join queries which enforces me to learn about tables outside of my module but I think I should not concern about tables not directly related to my module and use data access functions (written by those responsible for other modules) when I need data from them. Let me clarify: I am responsible for the ContactVendor module which enables the customers to contact the vendor and start a conversation about some specific product. Products module has it's own complex tables and relations with functions that encapsulate details (for example i18n, activation, product availability etc ...). Now I need to show the product title of some product related to some conversation between the vendor and customers. I may either write a long query that retrieves the product info along with conversation stuff in one shot (which enforces me to learn about Product tables) OR I may pass the relevant product_id to the get_product_info(int) function. First approach is obviously demanding and introduces many bad practices and things I normally consider fault in programming. The problem with the second approach seems to be the countless mini queries these access functions cause and performance loss is a concern when a loop tries to fetch product titles for 100 products using functions that each perform a separate query. So I'm stuck between "don't code to the implementation, code to interface" and performance. What is the right way of doing things ? UPDATE: I'm specially concerned about possible future modifications to those tables outside of my module. What if the Products module decided to change the way they are doing things? or for some reason modify the schema? It means some other modules would break or malfunction until the change is integrated to them. The usual ripple effect problem.

• Choosing an alternative ( visual basic) high level programming language

- by user370244
I used to be visual basic 6 programmer, i was pleased with visual basic : it is high level language that do stuff fast, easy to learn, easy to do stuff in,you can drag and drop stuff to the form and write your code,it is simply amazing.however microsoft buried VB6 and pointed us to VB.NET which is so different that it is not the old VB anymore.I didn't like what microsoft did and would like to look somewhere AWAY from microsoft and from any other proprietary language . I would like to look into a similar language that is easy, cross platform (windows / Linux), object oriented, visual design, non proprietary and compile (for some guarding against reverse engineering). i am freelancer so the choice is entirely mine,i don't care about performance of programs, the time taken to develop a given programs is much more important. desktop / database / GUI /networking programming is what i am looking for. so any such language offered by our open source community ? thank you so much

• flex chart grid lines dotted

- by Jonny
Using the LineChart component of Flex: How do I make the horizontal grid lines (background within the chart) dotted? With the mx:Stroke within the mx:horizontalStroke, I can only set properties like weight, color and alpha. I'd like to make the line dotted... This is what I have now: <mx:LineChart id="linechartDays" width="100%" height="100%" dataProvider="{dayData}" showDataTips="true"> <mx:backgroundElements> <mx:GridLines horizontalChangeCount="1" direction="horizontal"> <mx:horizontalStroke> <mx:Stroke weight="1" color="0xcccccc"/> </mx:horizontalStroke> </mx:GridLines> </mx:backgroundElements> </mx:LineChart>

• Get Information to Your Blog with Microsoft Broadcaster

- by Matthew Guay
Do you often have people ask you for advice about technology, or do you write tech-focused blog or newsletter? Here’s how you can get information to share with your readers about Microsoft technology with Microsoft Broadcaster. Microsoft Broadcaster is a new service from Microsoft to help publishers, bloggers, developers, and other IT professionals find relevant information and resources from Microsoft. You can use it to help discover things to write about, or simply discover new information about the technology you use. Broadcaster will also notify you when new resources are available about the topics that interest you. Let’s look at how you could use this to expand your blog and help your users. Getting Started Head over to the Microsoft Broadcaster site (link below), and click Join to get started. Sign in with your Windows Live ID, or create a new account if you don’t already have one. Near the bottom of the page, add information about your blog, newsletter, or group that you want to share Broadcaster information with. Click Add when you’re done entering information. You can enter as many sites or groups as you wish. When you’ve entered all of your information, click the Apply button at the bottom of the page. Broadcaster will then let you know your information has been submitted, but you’ll need to wait several days to see if you are approved or not. Our application was approved about 2 days after applying, though this may vary. When you’re approved, you’ll receive an email letting you know. Return to the Broadcaster website (link below), but this time, click Sign in. Accept the terms of use by clicking I Accept at the bottom of the page. Confirm that your information entered previously is correct, and then click Configure my keywords at the bottom of the page. Now you can pick the topics you want to stay informed about. Type keywords in the textbox, and it will bring up relevant topics with IntelliSense. Here we’ve added several topics to keep up with. Next select the Microsoft Products you want to keep track of. If the product you want to keep track of is not listed, make sure to list it in the keywords section as above. Finally, select the types of content you wish to see, including articles, eBooks, webcasts, and more. Finally, when everything’s entered, click Configure My Alerts at the bottom of the page. Broadcaster can automatically email you when new content is found. If you would like this, click Subscribe. Otherwise, simply click Access Dashboard to go ahead and find your personalized content. If you choose to receive emails of new content, you’ll have to configure it with Windows Live Alerts. Click Continue to set this up. Select if you want to receive Messenger alerts, emails, and/or text messages when new content is available. Click Save when you’re finished. Finally, select how often you want to be notified, and then click Access Dashboard to view the content currently available. Finding Content For Your Blog, Site, or Group Now you can find content specified for your interests from the dashboard. To access the dashboard in the future, simply go to the Broadcaster site and click Sign In. Here you can see available content, and can search for different topics or customize the topics shown. You’ll see snippets of information from various Microsoft videos, articles, whitepapers, eBooks, and more, depending on your settings. Click the link at the top of the snippet to view the content, or right-click and copy the link to use in emails or on social networks like Twitter. If you’d like to add this snippet to your website or blog, click the Download content link at the bottom. Now you can preview what the snippet will look like on your site, and change the width or height to fit your site. You can view and edit the source code of the snippet from the box at the bottom, and then copy it to use on your site. Copy the code, and paste it in the HTML of a blog post, email, webpage, or anywhere else you wish to share it. Here we’re pasting it into the HTML editor in Windows Live Writer so we can post it to a blog. After adding a title and opening paragraph, we have a nice blog post that only took a few minutes to put together but should still be useful for our readers. You can check out the blog post we created at the link below. Readers can click on the links, which will direct them to the content on Microsoft’s websites. Conclusion If you frequently need to find educational and informative content about Microsoft products and services, Broadcaster can be a great service to keep you up to date. The service worked quite good in our tests, and generally found relevant content to our keywords. We had difficulty embedding links to eBooks that were listed by Broadcaster, but everything else worked for us. Now you can always have high quality content to help your customers, coworkers, friends, and more, and you just might find something that will help you, too! • Best way to convert Stream (of unknown length) to byte array, in .NET?

- by Frank Hamming
Hello, I have the following code to read data from a Stream (in this case, from a named pipe) and into a byte array: // NPSS is an instance of NamedPipeServerStream int BytesRead; byte[] StreamBuffer = new byte[BUFFER_SIZE]; // defined elsewhere (less than total possible message size, though) MemoryStream MessageStream = new MemoryStream(); do { BytesRead = NPSS.Read(StreamBuffer, 0, StreamBuffer.Length); MessageStream.Write(StreamBuffer, 0, BytesRead); } while (!NPSS.IsMessageComplete); byte[] Message = MessageStream.ToArray(); // final data Could you please take a look and let me know if it can be done more efficiently or neatly? Seems a bit messy as it is, using a MemoryStream. Thanks!

• JQUERY - how Two elements - IMG - DIV when hover over IMG show/hide the DIV - added with hover hide/

- by Jan Fosgerau
Im very new to the wonder that is jquery. and i just figure out how to make my img buttons show/hide with a opacity difference (as such) which is good and all. but i also need to make the button when hovered over show text just above it that is specific to that button. i made these here elements that are looped in a for each.

<xsl:value-of select="@nodeName"/>

i need to make the individual text appear when hovered over its button. hence i have the id="page-{@id}" looped out along and need to get this place in the jquery code i presume. so when i hover over a img class="ExcommKnap" it makes the correct text visible. But i need the div id="page-{id}" to be invisible to begin with on pageload and then visible when its button is being hovered over. can anyone help ?

• [C++] Is it possible to use threads to speed up file reading ?

- by Mister Mystère
Hi there, I want to read a file as fast as possible (40k lines) [Edit : the rest is obsolete]. Edit: Andres Jaan Tack suggested a solution based on one thread per file, and I want to be sure I got this (thus this is the fastest way) : One thread per entry file reads it whole and stocks its content in a container associated (- as many containers as there are entry files) One thread calculates the linear combination of every cell read by the input threads, and stocks the results in the exit container (associated to the output file). One thread writes by block (every 4kB of data, so about 10 lines) the content of the output container. Should I deduce that I must not use m-mapped files (because the program's on standby waiting for the data) ? Thanks aforehand. Sincerely, Mister mystère.

• WF performance with new 20,000 persisted workflow instances each month

- by Nikola Stjelja
Windows Workflow Foundation has a problem that is slow when doing WF instances persistace. I'm planning to do a project whose bussiness layer will be based on WF exposed WCF services. The project will have 20,000 new workflow instances created each month, each instance could take up to 2 months to finish. What I was lead to belive that given WF slownes when doing peristance my given problem would be unattainable given performance reasons. I have the following questions: Is this true? Will my performance be crap with that load(given WF persitance speed limitations) How can I solve the problem? We currently have two possible solutions: 1. Each new buisiness process request(e.g. Give me a new drivers license) will be a new WF instance, and the number of persistance operations will be limited by forwarding all status request operations to saved state values in a separate database. 2. Have only a small amount of Workflow Instances up at any give time, without any persistance ofso ever(only in case of system crashes etc.), by breaking each workflow stap in to a separate worklof and that workflow handling each business process request instance in the system that is at that current step(e.g. I'm submitting my driver license reques form, which is step one... we have 100 cases of that, and my step one workflow will handle every case simultaneusly). I'm very insterested in solution for that problem. If you want to discuss that problem pleas be free to mail me at [email protected]

• CodeContracts: How to fullfill Require in Ctor using this() call?

- by mafutrct
I'm playing around with Microsoft's CodeContracts and encountered a problem I was unable to solve. I've got a class with two constructors: public Foo (public float f) { Contracts.Require(f > 0); } public Foo (int i) : this ((float)i) {} The example is simplified. I don't know how to check the second constructor's f for being 0. Is this even possible with Contracts?
