  • Graphical corruption during Linux startup and shutdown - should I be worried?

    - by Macha
For the last month, when starting up or shutting down my laptop under Linux, I would get graphical corruption. Startup has an colour inverted, grainy rendition of what should be displayed while shutdown has a red background with all the text replaced by grey rectangles. At the very least this affects Fedora, Ubuntu and Xubuntu. Windows is not affected. Outside of startup/shutdown the system is fine. Should I be worrying about this?

  • Induce Mac graphical login from SSH

    - by Ben Alpert
The title says it all. Is there a way to make the loginwindow process start a user session by running a command when remotely logged in via SSH as an admin on Mac OS X? When the machine is at the login window (no user is currently logged in), I want it to open up a user's session as if I had clicked on the username and entered a password. Solutions that don't involve scripting the GUI are highly preferred, but this Apple KB page may be of interest for those who go that route.

  • C# - Alternative to System.Timers.Timer, to call a function at a specific time.

    - by Fábio Antunes
Hello everybody. I want to call a specific function on my C# application at a specific time. At first i thought about using a Timer (System.Time.Timer), but that soon became impossible to use. Why? Simple. The Timer Class requires a Interval in milliseconds, but considering that i might want the function to be executed, lets says in a week that would mean: 7 Days = 168 hours; 168 Hours = 10,080 minutes; 10,080 Minutes = 6,048,000 seconds; 6,048,000 Seconds = 6,048,000,000 milliseconds; So the Interval would be 6,048,000,000; Now lets remember that the Interval accepted data type is int, and as we know int range goes from -2,147,483,648 to 2,147,483,647. That makes Timer useless in this case once we cannot set a Interval bigger that 2,147,483,647 milliseconds. So i need a solution where i could specify when the function should be called. Something like this: solution.ExecuteAt = "30-04-2010 15:10:00"; solution.Function = "functionName"; solution.Start(); So when the System Time would reach "30-04-2010 15:10:00" the function would be executed in the application. How can this problem be solved? Thanks just by taking the time to read my question. But if you could provide me with some help i would be most grateful. Additional Info: What these functions will do? Getting climate information and based on that info: Starting / Shutting down other Applications (most of them Console Based); Sending custom Commands to those Console Applications; Power down, Rebooting, Sleep, Hibernate the computer; And if possible schedule the BIOS to Power Up the Computer; EDIT: It would seem that the Interval accepted data type is double, however if you set a value bigger that an int to the Interval, and call Start() it throws a exception [0, Int32.MaxValue]. EDIT 2: Jørn Schou-Rode suggested using Ncron to handle the scheduling tasks, and at first look this seems a good solution, but i would like to hear about some who as worked with it.

  • Fluent Nhibernate Order-By on Collection

    - by madcapnmckay
Hi, If I have a collection mapped in Fluent NHibernate and I want to apply an order to that collection how do I do that? Eg: HasMany(x => x.PastDates) .AsBag().Cascade .SaveUpdate() .KeyColumnNames.Add("EventId") .Where(e => e.DateFrom < DateTime.Now.Date) .Inverse(); I'm looking for the equivalent of the order-by attribute in HBM files. Thanks

  • Why do switch statements continue after case

    - by John W.
After evaluating a case in a switch statement in Java (and I am sure other languages) the following case's are also evaluated unless a control statement like break, or return is used. I understand this is probably an implementation detail, but what is/are the reasons for having this functionality happen? Thanks!

  • How should I display a notification bar in WinForms?

    - by mafutrct
You all know the "You've got new answers!" notification bar on SO. I'd like the same thing in a Form, preferably just as smooth. Is there a simple way? Or do I have to completely create this myself? My searches did not yield any good results, only lots of progress bars and popups in the system notification area, but that's not what I'm looking for.

  • SQL Server - Schema/Code Analysis Rules - What would your rules include?

    - by Randy Minder
We're using Visual Studio Database Edition (DBPro) to manage our schema. This is a great tool that, among the many things it can do, can analyse our schema and T-SQL code based on rules (much like what FxCop does with C# code), and flag certain things as warnings and errors. Some example rules might be that every table must have a primary key, no underscore's in column names, every stored procedure must have comments etc. The number of rules built into DBPro is fairly small, and a bit odd. Fortunately DBPro has an API that allows the developer to create their own. I'm curious as to the types of rules you and your DB team would create (both schema rules and T-SQL rules). Looking at some of your rules might help us decide what we should consider. Thanks - Randy

  • How to pull a RANDOM and UNIQUE record from SQL via LINQ.

    - by Jeremy H
Okay, I found lots of posts on SO about how to pull a RANDOM item from the database when using LINQ. There seems to be a couple of differnet ways to handle this. What I need to do though is pull a RANDOM item from the database that the user has not seen before. The data I am pulling from the database is very small. Is there any way I can just hit the database once for 1000 records and then randomly scroll through those? Should I put a cookie on the users system recording the IDs of which items they have seen, pull a random record, check to see if it is seen and if so, pull from the database again? That seems like performance issues just waiting to happen. I don't expect anyone to code it for me, I am just looking for concepts and pointing in the right direction of how I should go about this. Need more details? Just let me know!

  • Left Join not returning all rows

    - by DisgruntledGoat
I have this query in MySQL: SELECT pr.*, pr7.value AS `room_price_high` FROM `jos_hp_properties` pr LEFT OUTER JOIN `jos_hp_properties2` pr7 ON pr7.property=pr.id WHERE pr7.field=23 The jos_hp_properties table has 27 rows but the query only returns one. Based on this question I think it may be because of the WHERE clause. The jos_hp_properties2 table has fields id, property, field, value, where field is a foreign key to a third table (which I don't need to get data from). Is there a way to select all the rows from the first table, including the value from table #2 where the field is 23 (or NULL if there is no field 23)?

  • How do I remotely obtain a system's network shares and connections?

    - by Mick
I'm looking for a way to obtain information similar to the following console applications, remotely: net use net share netstat -ano However, I need to be able to do this without running a 3rd party application on the system. This effectively rules out using psexec to execute the command remotely, because psexec would then be installed as a service. I should add that I have administrative credentials on the remote system. I've considered using WMI's remote execution ability, but that requires me to write output to a file and then retrieve it. It's possible, but I'd like to know if anyone has a better way. I am using Delphi 2010.

  • Is it possible to make the AntiForgeryToken value in ASP.NET MVC change after each verification?

    - by jmcd
We've just had some Penetration Testing carried out on an application we've built using ASP.NET MVC, and one of the recommendations that came back was that the value of the AntiForgeryToken in the Form could be resubmitted multiple times and did not expire after a single use. According to the OWASP recommendations around the Synchronizer Token Pattern: "In general, developers need only generate this token once for the current session." Which is how I think the ASP.NET MVC AntiForgeryToken works. In case we have to fight the battle, is it possible to cause the AntiForgeryToken to regenerate a new value after each validation?

  • Using Telerik Reporting in a WPF application

Now that Telerik Reporting provides WPF support, let's see how to use it (a video is also available on Getting Started with the WPF viewer): Creating the application Install RadControls for WPF 2010 Q1 SP1 (download | release notes). Install the corresponding Telerik Reporting version. Create a new WPF application project in Visual Studio Add references to the following Telerik RadControls for WPF assemblies: Telerik.Windows.Controls Telerik.Windows.Controls.Input Telerik.Windows.Controls.Navigation Telerik.Windows.Data NOTE: It is possible that the RadControls for WPF assemblies have a greater version than the one against which the WPF Report Viewer control was built. In this case you have to add appropriate assembly binding redirects (see Binding Redirects bellow). Drag and drop the ReportViewer control from the toolbox in the WPF window. • TechEd India Recap

Last week I spoke at TechEd India and the Visual Studio 2010 launch. It was a great event with over 3,000 attendees, far more than attended the Visual Studio launch in Las Vegas! Senior vice president of the Developer Division at Microsoft, S. Somasegar, did an awesome keynote. I did three sessions: Building applications with OData Building Line of Business Applications with WCF and Silverlight 4.0 Building Silverlight Business Applications with RIA Services Something happened to me that never happened before in my 13+ years of being a professional international speaker: I lost my voice! I was in Indonesia the week before and picked up a small bug and had no voice. This was a new challenge for me, and Microsoft offered to cancel my sessions, but I figured why would I let no voice stop me from delivering my sessions!! So I decided to throw away the slides and just code. I had no voice anyway, ...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Telerik OpenAccess ORM and the XML Metadata Source

We all know that Telerik OpenAccess ORM has a completely new face with the Q1 2010 release so it is about time to start blogging about some of the features and improvements that the new Visual Designer brought along.  Today I will talk about one of the most notable changes in the new version of OpenAccess ORM and that is the XML only mapping. You all know that so far with the previous versions of the product the mapping information was defined by a mix of XML configuration files and CLR attributes. After a lot of customer feedback and thorough thought we decided to make the XML and the attributes as two separate and self-contained sources of metadata information about your model. You can choose one based on your personal preferences. I will start with a brief overview over the new XML mapping definition. Unlike previous versions, where all ...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • XAML RadControls are out with Q1 2010 SP1

Our main focus with Q1 2010 SP1 release is the official launch of RadControls for Silverlight 4 RTW. Shortly after the official announcement on April 15th we delivered the natively built suite on Silverlight 4 to empower our clients with the advantages of the new capabilities for developing robust enterprise applications. The suite features support for both Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 and Microsoft SharePoint 2010. With Q1 2010 SP1 we have delivered installations for both Silverlight 3 and Silverlight 4. Well keep the support for Silverlight 3 with full installations until the Q2 2010 release and after that will ship upgrades only with binaries. The binaries for Silverlight 3 will contain only major bug fixes but wont include new features. This support will be discontinued with our Q3 release when we believe the full adoption of VS 2010 and Silverlight 4 will be completed. Another important note regarding the current ...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • PHP cannot connect to MySQL

    - by yogal
Hello, I recently installed Apache 2 + PHP 5.3.1 + MySQL 5.1.44 on my Windows 7 64bit machine following this guide: http://sleeplessgeek.blogspot.com/2010/01/setting-up-apache-php-mysql-phpmyadmin.html It all went fine, php is working great (even with XDebug) but I cannot connect to mysql server. A simple script I wrote to test connection (yes, root has no pass): $username = "root"; $password = ""; $database = "test"; $hostname = "localhost"; $conn = mysql_connect($hostname, $username, $password) or die("Unable to connect to MySQL Database!!"); It prints this error after 60sec of timeout: Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond. I can connect to mysql using cmdmysql -h localhost -u root Services are working properly. There also seems to be a problem with PhpMyAdmin (using 3.2.5). As soon as I type user and pass the page loads and turns blank (content-lenght in headers is 0 but status code is 302 Found). Looks like something wrong with cookies (my auth method). I hope someone has a clue, it has to be something dumb simple I missed. Thanks in advance.
