  • Is passing a struct value to a method by-reference in C# an acceptable optimization?

    - by Arc
Say I have a struct: struct MyStruct { public int X public int Y } And a method in some class that is iterated over many times elsewhere: public bool MyMethod( MyStruct myStruct ) { return ... } Is changing the MyMethod signature to the following an acceptable optimization? public bool MyMethod( ref MyStruct myStruct ) If so, how much of an advantage would it really be? If not, about how many fields would a struct need for a big enough advantage using ref this way?

  • Appropriate collection for variable-depth list?

    - by George R
If I wanted to have a collection that described the (recursive) contents of a root directory, including directories and files, how would I store them? Or do I need to come up with an object that holds: -Current directory -Parent directory -Files in directory ..and slap them all in one big list and manually work out the relationship at runtime from each entries Parent directory.

  • What is the best way to modify a few fields in an XML using Java

    - by Kailas J C
I have a big XML which contains around 300 elements. I need to modify 2 or 3 elements in this xml using Java. I don't want to go for conventional marshalling and unmarshalling as it involves the parsing of the whole XML. How is XPath/XSLT manipulation? I know that I can easily read the data but i need to modify the same and put in back in the same XML. The primary concern here is performance. Kindly advise

  • Should I move this task to a message queue?

    - by Fedyashev Nikita
I'm a big fan of using message queue systems(like Apache ActiveMQ) for the tasks which are rather slow and do not require instant feedback in User Interface. The question is: Should I use it for other tasks(which are pretty fast) and do not require instant feedback in User Interface? Or does it in involve another level of complexity without not so much benefits?

  • Whats the most efficient way to access another forms controls in .NET?

    - by broke
I'm creating a reporting application, and our customers are going to need to generate some pretty big reports which require quite a bit of memory. Ive been in a re-factoring mood lately, so I was wondering what the best way to access the properties of another open form would be(The reporting viewer opens in a new form.) So far I have: Dim form As MainSelections form = My.Application.OpenForms(2) yay or nay. Thanks

  • Mathematica + GraphPlot + GraphicsGrid with EdgeLabels

    - by Paxinum
I had some very strange problems with GraphicsGrid. The individual PraphPlot:s looks nice and ok, but the code GraphicsGrid[{{GraphPlot[{{a -> b, "ab"}, {a -> c, "7"}}]}, {GraphPlot[{{a -> b, "5"}, {a -> c, "2"}}]}}] just produces 2 big clots of garbage. If I remove the edge labels, everything works as expected. I am using Mathematica 7.0.0.

  • Stop overlooking minor details

    - by Mark Lubin
Compared to most people on this site I am admittedly a novice. I wanted to get some advice from the pros on how to avoid making stupid errors in your code. Is there anyone else who had the problem when they were first starting out of missing some detail that causes big problems? Are there any habits or behaviors that helped you over come this.

  • Is it impossible to embed Java3D in a way that I don't need to install it?

    - by Kyle
I'm running a big application and a small part of it includes Java 3D, the problem is many users need to use the code, but it isn't practical for everyone to install Java 3D just to run the application if they aren't even going to use that section of the application. Is it possible through compiling an extra jar, or changing some paths, to include Java 3D in a project without installing it on a system? Or perhaps to manually include any dlls?

  • MySQL - What is the correct primary key method

    - by Hammerstein
I'm starting to develop an application using MySQL and although I've developed apps before using databases, I've normally gone to the incrementing id method. The other day I was reading a posting somewhere and saw someone being picked apart for this, for not properly "normalising the database". I'm not a big database person, but I wanted to make sure I'm doing this right. Any ideas, help / guidance?

  • What's the Erlang/Haskell job market like in the U.S.?

    - by Krystof
I've heard that Telecoms are the big source of Erlang jobs but I'm not sure how much of a market there is. How likely is it that someone could find a job in Erlang/Haskell if they decided to learn it? In my case I have a lot of programming experience in Java but am tired of Java and want to try something different.

  • What's the difference between C and C++

    - by Dinah
I know that C++ has the concept of objects but C doesn't. I also know that pretty much all there is to know about C fits into K & R but the C++ library is vastly more complex. There have got to be other big differences though. What are the major differences between C and C++?

  • How do I generate an Array string from an array in memory (php).

    - by Itay Moav
I need to create a big array in my code, I have the values in several tables (for easy management). I select it and now I have all the values in an array, in memory in the way I want. My problem, I need to write this array down, into the code. Is there a way to take an array which sits in the memory and translate it into a string "array('g'='h','b'='d'....)" which I can then echo and just copy-paste into my code?
