  • Troubleshooting an unstable internet connection

    My MacBook Pro running OS X (10.9, but I had the same problem before) is connected to a Belkin router via WiFi and, using Virgin Media as the ISP, to the internet. The connection is extremely unstable – on some days, I get a ping timeout every few seconds. In addition, some domains seem to suffer general connectivity issues. For instance, I often find that while the youtube.com website loads, none of the videos (which are hosted on a separate domain) do. At other times, videos load but always fail to buffer, even though the actual connection speed is ok, even though I’ve disabled dash playback. Since I’m living in a rented room and the ISP contract isn’t actually mine I’ve got only limited possibilities of addressing the problem. In particular, I have no access to the router configuration and my non tech savvy landlady, while sympathetic, is not in a great hurry to hand the problem over to the ISP’s customer support. What’s more, I seem to be the only person in the house experiencing these problems – but I can imagine that this is simply because I’m the only one who’s using the internet continuously. I’m searching for specific tests that might be able to pinpoint – and ideally solve – the problem. So far all I’ve managed to do is establish that Virgin is routing my traffic in mysterious ways. Here’s an excerpt from traceroute google.co.uk. It never seems to reach a destination. Is this normal? A friend living in the same town who is also with Virgin Media has a more conventional traceroute output: 7 hops to google.co.uk, all of which send the ICMP TIME_EXCEEDED response. The obvious fix – rebooting the router – doesn’t seem to help. As far as I can tell, the WiFi connection is stable (I can always ping the router) so the problem is further downstream. I’ve tried using an alternative DNS before (OpenDNS) but if anything, this made things worse. In fact, it made all Google services nigh unreachable.

The line breaks seem to have been introduced in the process of paasting into this form. Well spotted - I was using a PDF file name "ascii". I added a .pdf extension but still get the error. I suspect you're right that it's to do with admin rights. Here's more about the setup and what I'm trying to achieve. Win2pdf is a product for writing PDFs by works by simulating a Windows printer. You "print" the page, select win2pdf in the print dialog and it then asks for a file name. I have it installed on my pc (called Neil) and it works fine in this conventional way. My aim is to write an html page to a PDF file using win2pdf - but via ASP/vbscript/javascript rather than with manual intervention. The script for doing this was provided by win2PDF's tech support but when it did not work, that was the limit of their understanding. In the sample script the file ascii.asp just produces a table of ascii codes/characters. The URL given is on my own PC which has IIS set up to run scripts which it does fine. The error I get occurs on about the fourth line executed. I am logged in with full admin rights - I think! But I'm no expert. I hope this helps to give some more specific suggestions about how to check/fix the admin rights.

    How do you setup a single Apache2 config to host multiple HTTPS sites each on their own IP address? There will also be multiple HTTP sites on just a single IP address. I do not want to use Server Name Indication (SNI) as described here, and I'm only concerned with the important top-level Apache directives. That is, I just need to know the skeleton of how my config should look.   • Why can I view my site over a 3G connection but not through my wifi?

    So, I am sitting in my office with four computers on the same network and internet connection. Two of the computers can visit this particular website. Two of the computer get a message "Google Chrome could not find". I have tried FF and IE also with the same problem. I can view the site 90% of the time on two of the working computers although the site seems slow and sometimes I also get the same errors as the other two computers. I have flushed the DNS, reset the router, tested the site on other peoples computers with success. Is this likely to be a site issue, an ISP issue, a hosting issue? Any advice is greatly appreciated.   • The ping response time doesn't reflect the real network response time

    I encountered a weird problem that the response time returned by ping is almost fixed at 98ms. Either I ping the gateway, or I ping a local host or a internet host. The response time is always around 98ms although the actual delay is obvious. However, the reverse ping (from a local machine to this host) works properly.   • Allow email from a particular sender through spam filter

    We are running exchange 2010 and are using the built in anti-spam feature. We have set up Content Filtering, IP Block List Providers, Sender ID, Sender Reputation and it filters out most of the junk but it also quarantines all emails from one of our customers. It is being quarantined because of the Content Filter agent (Report Below). How can I add an exception for this email address to the Content Filter. I can see how to setup an exception for a delivery address ("Don't filter messages sent TO the following recipients") but I want to add [email protected] to our safe list. I don't want to add the whole domain as it is a very popular ISP in Australia and we often get junk from them.     i wrote app with c# in asp.net which connect to AD and gets deleted users, everything works on my computer, but in the iis server i cant see the deleted users, i checked permissions, filter, path, evrithing's right (and in ldp i can see deleted users in the server too) the asp.net virsion in the iis server match the virsion in my computer. when i change the code to view all users (deleted and exists) it shows only the exists what can it be?

  • Repeated requests on our server?

    I encountered something strange in the access log of our Apache server which I cannot explain. Requests for webpages that I or my colleagues do from the office's Windows network get repeated by another IP (that we don't know) a couple of seconds later. The user agent repeating our requests is Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 5.1; Trident/4.0; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.04506.648; .NET CLR 3.5.21022; .NET CLR 3.0.4506.2152; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; InfoPath.2) Has anyone an idea? Update: I've got some more information now. The referrer of the replicate is set to the URL I requested before and it's not the exact same request as the protocol version is changed from 'HTTP/1.1' to 'HTTP/1.0'. The IP is not just one, it's just one of a subnet (80.40.134.*). It's just the first request to a resource that's get repeated, so it seems the "spy" is building up some kind of cache of visited places. The repeater is also picky. I tried randomly URLs with different HTTP status codes and different file patterns. 301s and 200s are redone, 404s not. Image extensions seem to be ignored. I still want to find out who this is, so any further help is appreciated. I'll try later if this also happens if I query some other server where I have access to the access logs and will update here then.

    I've used the mklink utility to create a symlink to a directory of web content. IIS7 doesn't "see" changes any classic ASP files in this linked directory without issuing an iisreset. I've disabled caching and file changes are picked up on other static files (such as .html) but .asp files are ignored.

  • Where to set timeout value for website?

    I have a website that has its own application pool and uses ASP.net. The application interfaces with a SQL database. I changed the IIS timeout value from 20 minutes to 30 minutes but it still tinmes out at 20 minutes. If I set the IIS, ASP, and apppool timeouts all to 30 minutes it works correctly. Is there a single place I can set the timeout value or do I need to set the timeout in all three locations?

    I've struggled with this one for a whole day, so here is both the problem & solution: After profiling an ASP.NET application on Windows 7 (x64), I exited Visual Studio (possibly a crash) and installed some updates which required a reboot. When I loaded back up the ASP.NET Web Application in my Visual Studio Solution was dimmed out, and the Web & WAS services turned out to be stopped. When I tried starting Windows Process Activation Service, I got the error "parameter is incorrect".

    I do not know. Just curious. But first things first. As a web developer I spend about 80% of my work-time editing JavaScript code. And since my server-side platform is .NET then it would be very convenient to have decent JavaScript text editor within Visual Studio IDE. So, Visual Studio 2010 is out. Downloaded and installed. What were my expectations regarding JavaScript editor? Pretty low, actually.  I just wanted to have matching braces highlighted eventually. That’s all. Yes, I know about Ctrl + ] shortcut but it is not event remotely close to convenience. And the result? Alas. Without further ado, just look at some real-world fragment of code from jQuery Templates Proposal experimental plugin as I see it in Notepad++, Notepad2 and Visual Studio 2010 editors respectively: Notepad++ Notepad2 Visual Studio 2010 Look at the highlighted parentheses, regular expression literals, numbers. Do you have a feeling that the last screenshot is not very informative in comparison with the other ones? If yes, then my question is why? Instead I was given an IntelliSense. Sorry, but I do not need it to rot my mind. Especially the one which does not always work properly (try to use it with base2 library for example). With all the expressive power of the language I have to know what I am doing. Instead I still have the same plain old Notepad with some of the JavaScript keywords colorized, plus partially functional/useful IntelliSense. What I do need, is just a little help to make less errors when I type the code – some essential text editor facilities that I really need. Give me that and only then feel free to improve on something else. Maybe I am wrong. Then, sorry. Just cannot believe that I have to wait for another couple of years to get very basic code editor feature.

  • Install SharePoint 2013 on a two server farm

    When SharePoint 2010 was released, I published an article on how to install SharePoint on a two server farm. SharePoint 2013 brings lots of improvements to the topologies, but still supports two-server architecture. Be noted that “two-server architecture” is meant for small implementations with limited service applications. Refer the below link to understand more about the SharePoint architecture http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/fp123594.aspx A two tier farm consists of a database server and a web/application server as follows. In this article I am going to explain how to install SharePoint in a two server farm. I prepared 2 servers, both of them joined to a domain(SP2013Domain), and in one server I installed SQL Server 2012 (Server name: SP2013_DB). Now I am going to install SharePoint 2013 in the second server (Server Name: SP2013). The following domain accounts are created for the installation.   User Account Purpose Server roles required SQLService - SQL Server service account - This account is used as the service account for SQL Server. - domain user account / local account spSetup - You will be running SharePoint setup and SharePoint products and configuration wizard using this account. -domain user account - Member of the Administrators group on each server on which Setup is run(In our case SP2013) - SQL Server login on the computer running SQL Server - Member of the Server admin SQL Server security role spDataaccess - Configure and manage server farm. This - Application pool identity for central admin website - Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Workflow Timer Service Domain user account (Other permissions will be set to this account automatically)   The above are the minimum list of accounts needed for SharePoint 2013 installation. Now you need additional accounts for services, application pool identities for web applications etc. Refer the service accounts requirements for SharePoint from the below link. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263445.aspx In order to install SharePoint 2013 login to the server using setup account(spsetup). Now run the setup from the installation media. First you need to install the pre-requisites. During the installation process, the server may restart several times. The installation wizard will guide you through the installation. In the next step, you need to agree on the terms and conditions as usual. Once you click next, the installation will start immediately. The installation wizard will let you know the progress of the installation. During the installation you may receive notifications to restart the server, you need to just click the finish button so that the system will be restarted. Once all the pre-requisites are installed, you will get the success message as below. Click finish to close the dialog. Now from the media, run the setup again and this time you choose install SharePoint server. In the next screen, you need to enter the product key, and then click continue. Now you need to agree on the terms and conditions for SharePoint 2013, and click continue. Choose the file location as per your policies and click on the install now button. You will see the installation progress. Once completed, you will see the installation completed dialog. Make sure you select the run products and configuration wizard option and click close. From the start screen, click next to start the configuration wizard. You will receive warning telling you some of the services will be stopped during the installation. Select “create new server farm” radio button and click next. In the next step, you need to enter the configuration database settings. Enter the database server details and then specify the database access account. You need to specify the farm account(spdataaccess). The wizard will grant additional privileges to the account as needed. In the next step you need to specify the passphrase, you need to note this as you need this passphrase if you add additional server to the farm. In the next step, you need to enter the central administration website port and security settings. You can choose a port or just keep it as suggested by the wizard. Click next, you will see the summary of what you have been selected. Verify the selected settings and if you want to change any, just click back and change them, or click continue to start the configuration. The configuration may take some time, you can view the progress, in case of any error, you will get the log file, you need to fix any error and again start the configuration wizard. Once the configuration successful, you will see the success message. Just click finish. Now you can browse the central administration website. It is good to check the health analyzer to review whether there are any errors/warnings. No warnings/errors indicate a good installation. Two-Server architecture is the least configuration for production environments. For small firms with less number of employees can implement SharePoint 2013 using this topology and as the workload increases, they can add more servers to the farm without reconstructing everything.

All the wrappers inherit from a base class which gives you a set of common functionality against all the cache implementations: •    inherits OutputCacheProvider, so you can use your chosen cache provider as an ASP.NET output cache; •    serialization and encryption, so you can configure whether you want your cache items serialized (XML, JSON or binary) and encrypted; •    instrumentation, you can optionally use performance counters to monitor cache attempts and hits, at a low level. The framework wraps up different caches into an ICache interface, and it lets you use a provider directly like this: Cache.Memory.Get<RefData>(refDataKey); - or with configuration to use the default cache provider: Cache.Default.Get<RefData>(refDataKey); The library uses Unity’s interception framework to implement AOP caching, which you can use by flagging methods with the [Cache] attribute: [Cache] public RefData GetItem(string refDataKey) - and you can be more specific on the required cache behaviour: [Cache(CacheType=CacheType.Memory, Days=1] public RefData GetItem(string refDataKey) - or really specific: [Cache(CacheType=CacheType.Disk, SerializationFormat=SerializationFormat.Json, Hours=2, Minutes=59)] public RefData GetItem(string refDataKey) Provided you get instances of classes with cacheable methods from the container, the attributed method results will be cached, and repeated calls will be fetched from the cache. You can also set a bunch of cache defaults in application config, like whether to use encryption and instrumentation, and whether the cache system is enabled at all: <sixeyed.caching enabled="true"> <performanceCounters instrumentCacheTotalCounts="true" instrumentCacheTargetCounts="true" categoryNamePrefix ="Sixeyed.Caching.Tests"/> <encryption enabled="true" key="1234567890abcdef1234567890abcdef" iv="1234567890abcdef"/> <!-- key must be 32 characters, IV must be 16 characters--> </sixeyed.caching> For AOP and methods flagged with the cache attribute, you can override the compile-time cache settings at runtime with more config (keyed by the class and method name): <sixeyed.caching enabled="true"> <targets> <target keyPrefix="MethodLevelCachingStub.GetRandomIntCacheConfiguredInternal" enabled="false"/> <target keyPrefix="MethodLevelCachingStub.GetRandomIntCacheExpiresConfiguredInternal" seconds="1"/> </targets> It’s released under the MIT license, so you can use it freely in your own apps and modify as required. I’ll be adding more content to the GitHub wiki, which will be the main source of documentation, but for now there’s an FAQ to get you started. * - in the course the framework library also wraps NCache Express, but there's no public redistributable library that I can find, so it's not in Sixeyed.Caching.
