  • JavaScript Encapsulation / JQuery

    - by Chris
I am trying to figure out how to keep my page variables in my application from being defined globally. I've come up with a few methods but am wondering if there is a general standard approach people use. I've got my plugin design pattern down using this approach: http://www.virgentech.com/blog/2009/10/building-object-oriented-jquery-plugin.html. But I'm just not sure how to handle my page level encapsulation.

  • MySQL Select names with last names starting with certain letter

    - by Brian
I have a MySQL database with a field Name which contains full names. To select all people with last names starting with a particular letter, let's say A for this example, I use the following query: SELECT * FROM db WHERE Name LIKE '% A%'. However, this also selects users who have a middle name starting with A. Is there anyway to alter this query so that only a last name starting in A will be selected?

  • Python: Converting legacy string dates to dates

    - by Eric
We have some legacy string dates that I need to convert to actual dates that can be used to perform some date logic. Converting to a date object isn't a problem if I knew what the format were! That is, some people wrote 'dd month yy', othes 'mon d, yyyy', etc. So, I was wondering if anybody knew of a py module that attempts to guess date formats and rewrites them in a uniform way? Any other suggestions? Thanks! :) Eric

  • Data Quality Check - SQL Server

    - by user319384
I am trying to find a good mechanism where I can check whether the data being entered by a group of people is grammatically correct, has correct spellings, etc, etc. I also would like to compute words per minute and accuracy. Is there any process to do this so that I do not have to re-invent the wheel? Thanks in advance.

  • Do you have examples of un-helpful/Obscure error messages

    - by Wiretap
Yesterday I got this error The processing instruction target matching "[xX][mM][lL]" is not allowed when I investigated, it was caused by whitespace at the very start of my XML document. Not difficult to solve, but I was struck with how unhelpful that particular error message was to identifying the actual problem. So what other examples of obscure errors do people have, and are you willing to admit to some of your own making.

  • Learning PHP: Good examples of "build-this" based lessons?

    - by DavidR
Last summer I learned HTML and CSS for a job, mainly through tutorials and a sort of "build this" method, that is, I'm given a goal and have to try to figure out how to build it myself. Is there a place with some examples to teach someone with this method? My boss wants to get me going on PHP this summer, and I need to refamiliarize myself with it over the next week. Most people send me to Php.net to follow the documentation, is there another good method out there?

  • Pass a value to an inFrame

    - by user106707
This probably an easy thing to do but for some reason I can't get a handle on it. I have a simple form that allows people to select one if three items for sale. When they chose their item I need to pass that variable into an iFrame with a third party checkout page to safely process their cc transaction. How would I do this? Cheers-

  • Drawing tree diagram in ASP.Net MVC

I am creating an web application for my tae kwon do club. People are able to register online for a tournament. After the registration deadline the web application generates a dendrogram. Something like this: I am wondering now how to draw it. Because of the fact that there are my weight and age categories i have to draw them dynamicly for each group. What is the easiest way to draw this inside a MVC view?

  • Under what circumstances are linked lists useful?

    - by Jerry Coffin
Most times I see people try to use linked lists, it seems to me like a poor (or very poor) choice. Perhaps it would be useful to explore the circumstances under which a linked list is or is not a good choice of data structure. Ideally, answers would expound on the criteria to use in selecting a data structure, and which data structures are likely to work best under specified circumstances.

Write software for a bank. The program should be menu driven with the facility for bank employees to perform various operations. It should be written using all concepts of Object Oriented programming. You should be able to save your data in a file and read it back (because the bank people will shut down their computers when they go home :p ) Guidelines: The program may select to implement classes like Bank, Account, Savings Account, Fixed Deposit account, Customer, Depositor, Borrower, Transaction, etc.

  • Is Prince the best way to PDF in Ruby on Rails?

    - by Angela
After several Google searches, it appears that the way to create PDF's in Rails from HTML and CSS (versus a new markup language) is to use Prince. With licensing at $3800 for my non-big-commercial app, I'm wondering if this is, in fact, consensus or people have an alternative they can share the what's and how's.

Can anyone recommend a decent tool for optimising images other than adobe photoshop, the gimp etc? I'm looking to optimise images for the web preferably online and free. Basically I have a client who can't install additional software on their work PC but needs to optimise photographs and other images for their website and is presently uploading 1 or 2 Mb files. • Usernames are evil. How can I make Restful Authentication only require a username and password, inst

    - by Koning WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
As the title sais: How can I use the Restful Authentication Plugin with Ruby on Rails. When I want to create a new user, it requires me a (wrong-named, confusing field) login (= username), email address and password. • Ninject with Object Initializers and LINQ

    - by Alexander Kahoun
I'm new to Ninject so what I'm trying may not even be possible but I wanted to ask. I free-handed the below so there may be typos. Let's say I have an interface: public interface IPerson { string FirstName { get; set; } string LastName { get; set;} string GetFullName(); } And a concrete: public class Person : IPerson { public string FirstName { get; set; } public string LastName { get; set; } public string GetFullName() { return String.Concat(FirstName, " ", LastName); } } What I'm used to doing is something like this when I'm retrieving data from arrays or xml: public IEnumerable<IPerson> GetPeople(string xml) { XElement persons = XElement.Parse(xml); IEnumerable<IPerson> people = ( from person in persons.Descendants("person") select new Person { FirstName = person.Attribute("FName").Value, LastName = person.Attribute("LName").Value }).ToList(); return people; } I don't want to tightly couple the concrete to the interface in this manner. I haven't been able to find any information in regards to using Ninject with LINQ to Objects or with object initializers. I may be looking in the wrong places, but I've been searching for a day now with no luck at all. I was contemplating putting the kernel into an singleton instance and seeing if that would work, but I'm not sure that it will plus I've heard that passing your kernel around is a bad thing. I'm trying to implement this in a class library currently. If this is not possible, does anyone have any examples or suggestions as to what the best practice is in this case? Thanks in advance for the help. EDIT: Based on some of the answers I feel I should clarify. Yes, the example above appears short lived but it was simply an example of one piece that I was trying to do. Let's give a bigger picture. Say instead of XML I am gathering all my data through a 3rd party web service and I'm creating an interface for it, the data could be a defined object in the wsdl or it could sometimes be an xml string. IPerson could be used for both the Person object and a User object. I will be doing this inside of a separate class library, because it needs to be portable and will be used in other projects, and handing it to an MVC3 Web Application and the objects will be used in javascript as well. I appreciate all the input so far.

  • What's the difference between logging and printing to the console

    - by Ankur
This is kind of a philosophical question. Basically people often ask if I am logging - and since I am not a full time programmer, but someone who programs often but is actually more of a requirements analyst, I don't know all the best practices. I use Java a lot so I often do things like System.out.println() What's the difference in theory between the two? Ultimately aren't I also logging? Esp, if I prefix my comments with something like "ERROR:" or "WARN:" ?

  • Count words like Microsoft Word does

    - by Maarten
I need to count words in a string using PHP or Javascript (preferably PHP). The problem is that the counting needs to be the same as it works in Microsoft Word, because that is where the people assemble their original texts in so that is their reference frame. PHP has a word counting function (http://php.net/manual/en/function.str-word-count.php) but that is not 100% the same as far as I know. Any pointers?
