• Performance benefits of upgrading Richfaces to newer version

- by peteDog
I have a client that's running an application based on JBoss 4.0.5, Seam 1.2 and RichFaces 3.0.1. Their system is having performance problems due to the fact that a lot of data is coming back from the server to be displayed on screen and it seems like the rendering of that data is taking forever. The data brought back is displayed in a tabbed interface, but the tabs aren't currently being loaded individually, but all at once. I'm trying to build up a case to present to the client on the benefits of upgrading to never version of RichFaces, which, as I understand it, has added a great number of features related to tabbed panels and being able to use ajax to page the data and load the chunks you actually need to display at the moment, and not the rest that's in other tabs. The move to a newer version of RichFaces will also result in never versions of Jboss and Seam, as the current production build of RichFaces 3.2.1 requires JSF 1.2. IF anyone has some suggestions or experience on performance of current versions RichFaces, paging, etc, I would really appreciate some feedback.

• Is this a cache problem? (JQUERY)

- by Scarface
Hey guys quick question. I have this code that brings in data from a php script and it works fine some of the time. However, once in a while the information will not appear at all in opera if I keep refreshing. About Is every 3 refreshes. It seems to be fine in firefox. Is this a cache problem and can it be fixed? Thanks in advance for any assistance. $.getJSON(files+"comments.php?action=view&load=initial&topic_id="+topic_id+"&t=" + (new Date()), function(json) { if(json.length) { for(i=0; i < json.length; i++) { $('#comment-list').prepend(prepare(json[i])); $('#list-' + count).fadeIn(1500); } } });

• Parameter passing become pointer for integer

- by Kangkan
I am working on a c/Linux app for a device. I consume a web service (in WCF/c#) and use gSOAP for the same. The issue is that the parameters in the service methods become pointers for simple data types like int, short etc also. I initially used the same service exposed as ASMX web service and the client proxy generated using gSOAP created methods with parameters passed as values. But once the service has been upgraded to WCF, all the parameters became pointers. Can somebody help?

• Why does Joomla debug show 446 queries logged and 446 legacy queries logged?

- by Darye
I have been called in to fix the performance of a Joomla site that was already setup. I look at the debug output and it shows the same queries twice, once for queries logged and again for legacy queries logged. My guess is that it is actually running the same queries twice make for just under 900 queries per page (hope I am wrong) The Legacy plugin is disabled, so Legacy mode is not on at all. The site uses VirtueMart as well (which BTW isn't working properly if the cache in the Global Config is turned on) Besides the fact that I don't think it should be running 446 queries anyway (sometimes even up to 650 per page ), has anyone every experienced this issue, and where would I look to fix this. Thanks

• Need Users to Re-authenticate with NTLM

- by Trey Carroll
I'm NTLM (authenication="windows" in the web.config) with an asp.net mvc 2.0 site. Right now once a user logs in it keeps them logged in for weeks at a time. The use of the application is being opened up to users who share computers that use logged in service accounts. I need the site to reprompt each user for their AD credentials each time in order to handle these users. (Activity on the site must be linked to a uniquely identified user.) Thanks for any help that you can provide. Trey Carroll

• PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA1

- by Jason
To generate a valid pairwise master key for a WPA2 network a router uses the PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA1 algorithm. I understand that the sha1 function is performed 4096 times to derive the PMK, however I have two questions about the process. Excuse the pseudo code. 1) How is the input to the first instance of the SHA1 function formatted? SHA1("network_name"+"network_name_length"+"network_password") Is it formatted in that order, is it the hex value of the network name, length and password or straight ASCII? Then from what I gather the 160 bit digest received is fed straight into another round of hashing without any additional salting. Like this: SHA1("160bit digest from last round of hashing") Rise and repeat. 2) Once this occurs 4096 times 256 bits of the output is used as the pairwise master key. What I don't understand is that if SHA1 produces 160bit output, how does the algorithm arrive at the 256bits required for a key? Thanks for the help.

• MouseWheel: Scrolling vs. Zooming

- by beaudetious
I've got a Silverlight 4 custom control that basically is several Canvas elements wrapped inside a ScrollViewer. The user can set a property to determine whether to scroll or zoom when using their mouses wheel. In the custom control's MouseWheel event, I check to see if they want to scroll or zoom. If zooming, I determine the delta and modify the custom control's zoom level (which then handles the zooming code for me). The problem is that zooming won't start until the ScrollViewer's current position of the vertical scrollbar is at the top or bottom of the scrollbar. Once their, then the zooming works perfectly. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can prevent scrolling completely so that I only zoom (when the user wants to zoom, that is)? Thanks!

• SQL server 2008 Log shipping Failback

- by MarcoF
I need to set up log shipping for about 10 databases. The primary server is accessed by our website and the secondary server is a BI server. What I am struggling to figure out at moment is the best way to handle a “failback” situation once a failover has occurred. How do I get the primary server back to being the main server for the website? Does anyone have any suggestions or best practices to handle a failback? We are using SQL server 2008.

• AJAX CascadingDropdown - Setting the selected index - C# - ASP.NET

- by rpm1984
Hi, I have a CascadingDropDown on an ASP.NET page. Now, the prompt text is "Select State". (list of states). However, on a different version of this page (ie querystring), i might want to set the selected index to "California" for example. How can i do this? The web service used by the ajax control (ie GetStates) gets invoked at the same time the jquery document.ready function is triggered (ie asynchronously). So when i try and set the selected index in jquery, the items are not yet bound. Is there a way to attach a handler to the ajax dropdown so that i can set the selected index once the webservice call has completed, and the items are bound? Thanks in advance.

• Stream a continously growing file over tcp/ip

- by Grinner
Hello, I have a project I'm working on, where a piece of Hardware is producing output that is continuously being written into a textfile. What I need to do is to stream that file as it's being written over a simple tcp/ip connection. I'm currently trying to that through simple netcat, but netcat only sends the part of the file that is written at the time of execution. It doesn't continue to send the rest. Right now I have a server listening to netcat on port 9000 (simply for test-purposes): netcat -l 9000 And the send command is: netcat localhost 9000 < c:\OUTPUTFILE So in my understanding netcat should actually be streaming the file, but it simply stops once everything that existed at the beginning of the execution has been sent. It doesn't kill the connection, but simply stops sending new data. How do I get it to stream the data continuously? Thanks for any help!

• CSS problems with our eBay custom HTML template

- by user1302015
we are building a template for our eBay listings. eBay allows users to upload a description as HTML code and allows that code to link your external CSS files. eBay displays the user's HTML code in an iframe, it looks like eBay calculates the height of your page on load and then and resizes the iframe according to that height. Here is a link to one of our test listings in eBay's sandbox environment: http://cgi.sandbox.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110097353751&ssPageName=ADME:L:LCA:US:1123#ht_692wt_1136 In Chrome / Firefox there's a second scroll bar next to the listing. In IE, the listings just covers eBay's footer which is even worse I solved this issue once using CSS and i can't remember how. I would really appreciate any help. Here is our CSS code: http://pastebin.com/aj4bffG9

• How to access drop down list from EditItemTemplate of FormView

- by IrfanRaza
Hello friends, I have a formview on my aspx page containing various controls arranged using table. There is a DDL "cboClients" which i need to enable or disabled depending upon role within Edit mode. The problem here is that i am not able to get that control using FindControl() method. I have tried following code - DropDownList ddl = null; if (FormView1.Row != null) { ddl = (DropDownList)FormView1.Row.FindControl("cboClients"); ddl.Enabled=false; } Even I ave used the DataBound event of the same control - protected void cboClients_DataBound(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (FormView1.CurrentMode == FormViewMode.Edit) { if ((Session["RoleName"].ToString().Equals("Clients")) || (Session["RoleName"].ToString().Equals("Suppliers"))) { DropDownList ddl = (DropDownList)sender; ddl.Enabled = false; } } } But this databound event occurs only once, but not when formview mode is changed. Can anyone provide me proper solution? Thanks for sharing your time.

• displaying keyboard raises memory... but it never comes down iPhone

- by Joshep Freeman
Hello again. I encountered a weird behavior in memory just by displaying the default keyboard. I've just created a project with an .xib file for testing purposes. This .xib file has an UITextField element in it and it's connected in the .h via: @property(nonatomic, retain) IBOutlet UITextField *sometext; The .m has no changes but: - (void)viewDidAppear:(BOOL)animated { [someText becomeFirstResponder]; } As you see it's very very simple. The problem is that once the keyboard is shown, the memory allocated for it NEVER goes down. I've tested this scenario in another project with the only difference of having two .xib files. Standar pushViewController and popViewController calls are made. Instruments show an increase of 600kb in memory allocations [which are a lot more in the actual iPhone device]. All in all, hehehe. My question is: How do I release the memory allocated for the keyboard?.

• python: how to convert list of lists into a single nested list

- by Bhuski
I have a python list of lists as shown below: mylist=[ [['orphan1', ['some value1']]], [['parent1', ['child1', ['child', ['some value2']]]]], [['parent1', ['child2', ['child', ['some value3']]]]] ] I need to convert the above list to some thing like this: result=[ ['orphan1', ['some value1']], ['parent1', ['child1', ['child', ['some value2']]], ['child2', ['child', ['some value3']]]] ] Kindly help me approach this problem. I have given only simple list. In actual scenario here, in my list, even grand parents/grand childs are there. How much ever deep the input nested list is, I need to convert it to a single nested list, with common list elements (parents and grand parents) appearing only once. (but the next to innermost list element('child' in above example) should appear as many times it occurs in the input list. I have been trying to do this last two days, but did not end up with working solution :(. I need to use the output in django template filter: unordered_list so that the resultant nested list appears as a nested unordered list in my html page ..

• Able to ping but cannot browse after several hours running of my python program

- by Shane
It's a GUI program I wrote in python checking website/server status running on my XP SP3, multi threads are used to check different site/server. After several hours running, the program starts to get urlopen error timed out all the time, and this always happens right after a POST request from a server(not a certain one, might be A or B or C), and it's also not the first POST request causing the problem, normally after several hours running and it happens to make a POST request at an unknown moment, all you get from then on is urlopen error timed out. I'm still able to ping but cannot browse any site, once the program closed everything's fine. It's definitely the program causing this problem, well I just don't know how to debug/check what the problem is, also don't know if it's from OS side or my program wasting too many resources/connections(are you still able to ping when too many connections used?), would anybody please help me out?

• Select a subset of foreign key elements in inlineformset_factory in Django

- by Enis Afgan
Hello, I have a model with two foreign keys: class Model1(models.Model): model_a = models.ForeignKey(ModelA) model_b = models.ForeignKey(ModelB) value = models.IntegerField() Then, I create an inline formset class, like so: an_inline_formset = inlineformset_factory(ModelA, Model1, fk_name="model_a") and then instantiate it, like so: a_formset = an_inline_formset(request.POST, instance=model_A_object) Once this formset gets rendered in a template/page, there is ChoiceField associated with the model_b field. The problem I'm having is that the elements in the resulting drop down menu include all of the elements found in ModelB table. I need to select a subset of those based on some criteria from ModelB. At the same time, I need to keep the reference to the instance of model_A_object when instantiating inlineformset_factory and, therefore, I can't just use this example. Any suggestions?

The XML structure is as follows John Smith John Doe Johny Byrd I am using Ext.data.Store with proxyurl tot he xml, Ext.data.XML reader to rad the xml and a listener that bind the data to the Xtemplate. The xmlreader needs a root node to be specified and i have to give root name as "Student_Name" It need to bind it to one more store for "Faculty_Name" as the root node. SO i end up calling my service to get xml twice. Is there a way to call service once to get the xml and bind it to two stores with different root nodes.

• Why does Maven have such a bad rep?

- by Dan
There is a lot of talk on the internet about how Maven is bad. I have been using some features of Maven for a few years now and the most important benefit in my view is the dependency management. Maven documentation is less than adequate, but generally when I need to accomplish something I figure it once and than it works (for example, I remember when I implemented signing the jars.) I don’t think that Maven is great, but it does solve some problems that without it would be a genuine pain. So, why does Maven has such a bad rep and what problems with Maven can I expect in the future? Maybe there are much better alternatives that I don't know about? (For example, I never looked Ivy in detail.) NOTE: This is not an attempt to cause an argument. It is an attempt to clear the FUD.

• Intermittent Internet Explorer Error whilst using Javascript to traverse XML Nodes

- by Sykth
Hi there all, Basically I use a javascript SOAP plugin to send and receive XML from a web service. Recently I've been experiencing intermittment (1 in every 20-30 times) errors in IE when trying to access data in the XML file. Bear with me on this, I'm going to try and go into a fair amount of detail to help anyone who is willing to read this: I have a html file, with an external javascript file attached. In the javascript file I include 5 global variables: var soapRes; var questionXML; var xRoot; var assessnode; var edStage = 0; Once the html file is at a readystate I request the XML file from the web service like this: function initNextStage(strA) { // Set pl Parameters here var pl = new SOAPClientParameters(); // soap call var r = SOAPClient.invoke(url, "LoadAssessment", pl, true, initStage_callBack); } function initStage_callBack(r, soapResponse) { soapRes = soapResponse; initvalues(); function initvalues(){ xRoot = soapRes.documentElement; assessnode = xRoot.getElementsByTagName("ed")[0]; questionXML = assessnode.getElementsByTagName("question")[edStage]; } } Once this is completed the XML should be loaded into memory via the global variable soapRes. I then save values to the XML before moving one node down the XML tree, and pulling the next set of values out of it. function submitAns1() { var objAns; var corElem; var corElemTxt; questionXML = assessnode.getElementsByTagName("question")[edStage]; objAns = questionXML.getElementsByTagName("item")[0].getAttribute("answer"); corElem = soapRes.createElement("correct"); corElemTxt = soapRes.createTextNode("value"); questionXML.appendChild(corElem); corElem.appendChild(corElemTxt); if(objAns == "t") { corElemTxt.nodeValue = "true"; } else { corElemTxt.nodeValue = "false"; } edStage++; questionXML = assessnode.getElementsByTagName("question")[edStage]; var inc1 = questionXML.getElementsByTagName("sentence")[0]; var inc2 = questionXML.getElementsByTagName("sentence")[1]; var edopt1 = questionXML.getElementsByTagName("item")[0]; var edopt2 = questionXML.getElementsByTagName("item")[1]; var edopt3 = questionXML.getElementsByTagName("item")[2]; var edopt4 = questionXML.getElementsByTagName("item")[3]; var edopt5 = questionXML.getElementsByTagName("item")[4]; var temp1 = edopt1.childNodes[0].nodeValue; var temp2 = edopt2.childNodes[0].nodeValue; var temp3 = edopt3.childNodes[0].nodeValue; var temp4 = edopt4.childNodes[0].nodeValue; var temp5 = edopt5.childNodes[0].nodeValue; } This is an example of our XML: <ed> <appid>Administrator</appid> <formid>ED009</formid> <question id="1"> <sentence id="1">[email protected]</sentence> <sentence id="2">[email protected]</sentence>
0

1

2

3

4
</question> <question id="2"> <sentence id="1">Beausdene 13</sentence> <sentence id="2">Beauscene 83</sentence>
0

1

2

3

4
</question> </ed> The error I receive intermittently is that "questionXML" is null or not an object. Specifically this line when I call on the submitAns1() method: questionXML = assessnode.getElementsByTagName("question")[edStage]; This solution works on FF, Opera, Chrome & Safari without any issues as far as I am aware. Am I accessing the XML nodes incorrectly? I've been toying with fixes for this bug for weeks now, I'd really appreciate any insight into what I'm doing wrong. On a side note, this is a personal project of mine - it's not university related - I'm much too old for that! Any help greatly appreciated. Regards, Sykth.

• Rails initializes extremely slow on ruby 1.9.1

- by Ben Johnson
I just got my rails 2.3.8 app running on ruby 1.9.1. To get into the console, start the webserver, anything that initializes rails, takes 3 - 4 times longer in ruby 1.9 than in ruby 1.8.7. I'm using ruby version managers so I can easily switch between ruby 1.9 and ruby 1.8.7. The speed difference happens in both production and development. I want to use 1.9 because its must faster once everything is running, but the startup time is so bad the app is timing out on Heroku on the first request. Any ideas why ruby 1.9 would be 3 - 4 times slower? I can't figure it out for the life of me.

• Using TFSBuild to publish ClickOnce files that include prerequisites

- by icancsharp
I have declared an MSBuild tag in my TFSBuild project in order to publish ClickOnce files for my project. WSE 3.0 and .Net 3.0 are both pre-requisites for the application, so in Visual Studio I have ticked those as pre-requisites. When I build from Visual Studio, it creates a setup.exe file that I can publish to my web site. When you browse to this setup.exe file it installs WSE3.0 and .Net 3.0 and then continues to install my application, which works well. If I get TFS to create the click once files using the MSBuild tag in the TFSBuild file, it creates the setup.exe file, which I can publish to my website in the same way (along with all the other ClickOnce files). When I browse to setup.exe now, however, the prerequisites don't get installed and therefore my program does not run. Does anyone know how to get TFS to build a correct setup.exe file that properly bootstraps my prerequisites?

• Mocking Sort With Mocha

- by josephmate
How can I mock an array's sort expect a lambda expression? This is a trivial example of my problem: # initializing the data l = lambda { |a,b| a <=> b } array = [ 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ] sorted_array = [ 2, 3, 8, 9, 1] # I expect that sort will be called using the lambda as a parameter array.expects(:sort).with( l ).returns( sorted_array ) # perform the sort using the lambda expression temp = array.sort{|a,b| l.call(a,b) } Now, at first I expected that this would work; however, I got the following error: - expected exactly once, not yet invoked: [ 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ].sort(#<Proc:0xb665eb48>) Is there a way to do what I am looking for? • Rendering spatial data of GeoQuerySet in a custom view on GeoDjango

- by dmytro
Hello. I have just started my first project on GeoDjango. As a matter of fact, with GeoDjango powered Admin application we all have a great possibility to view/edit spatial data, associated with the current object. The problem is that after the objects having been populated I need to render several objects' associated geometry at once on a single map. I might implement it as a model action, redirecting to a custom view. I just don't know, how to include the OpenLayers widget in the view and how to render there my compound geometry from my GeoQuerySet. I would be very thankful for any hint from an experienced GeoDjango programmer.

• Eager loading vs. many queries with PHP, SQLite

- by Mike
I have an application that has an n+1 query problem, but when I implemented a way to load the data eagerly, I found absolutely no performance gain. I do use an identity map, so objects are only created once. Here's a benchmark of ~3000 objects. first query + first object creation: 0.00636100769043 sec. memory usage: 190008 bytes iterate through all objects (queries + objects creation): 1.98003697395 sec. memory usage: 7717116 bytes And here's one when I use eager loading. query: 0.0881109237671 sec. memory usage: 6948004 bytes object creation: 1.91053009033 sec. memory usage: 12650368 bytes iterate through all objects: 1.96605396271 sec. memory usage: 12686836 bytes So my questions are Is SQLite just magically lightning fast when it comes to small queries? (I'm used to working with MySQL.) Does this just seem wrong to anyone? Shouldn't eager loading have given much better performance?
