  • Latency on mobile networks (Android)

    I am planning to give mobile phone development a shot and was thinking about making some simple multiplayer games. I know latency over local wifi is probably fine but what are the issues with latency over GPRS/3G? I've searched and the best I've seen is someone saying it was 'high', without presenting any concrete numbers. I suppose latency fluctuations are important as well - does anyone have any info on this?

  • Java API Method Run Times

    Is there a good resource to get run times for standard API functions? It's somewhat confusing when trying to optimize your program. I know Java isn't made to be particularly speedy but I can't seem to find much info on this at all. Example Problem: If I am looking for a certain token in a file is it faster to scan each line using string.contains(...) or to bring in say 100 or so lines putting them to a local string them performing contains on that chunk.

  • Selecting count(*) while checking for a value in the results

    SELECT COUNT(*) as Count, IF(sch.HomeTeamID = 34,true,false) AS Hawaii FROM schedule sch JOIN schools s ON s.ID = 83 WHERE (sch.HomeTeamID = 83 OR sch.AwayTeamID = 83) AND sch.SeasonID = 4 I'm trying to use count() to simplify my result but also include a field that represents wether any of the results' specific column contained a certain value. Is this possible? I'd basically like a row response with all the info I need.

  • Is it standard behavior for this code to throw a NullPointerException?

    I've had a big problem in some library code, which I've pinned down to a single statement: System.out.println((String) null); Ok, the code doesn't actually look like that, but it certainly calls println with a null argument. Doing this causes my whole applicaio to throw an unexpected NullPointerException. In general, should println throw this exception under that circumstance, or is this non-standard behavior due to a poor implementation of the out instance?

  • Given a PHP class would be the best and simplest way to override one or two of its methods with one

    Here's the objective. I have a PHP class and there are one or two of its methods that I would like to override with my own. As I understand OOP (in PHP and in general) I could write a child class that extends it and overrides the functionality of the methods in question. However, I was wondering if this is the best way of achieving this task and if this is a proper use for child classes or if there is something better in PHP for what I'm trying to do.

  • What's the best way to stop multiple instances of a Windows app being launched?

    Many Windows apps (like Skype or MSN for instance) don't let you start multiple instances, rather trying to run it a 2nd time just leaves the existing version running. Is this typically done in some simple way - the start-menu shortcut is a 'wrapper' app around the main app - or is there some registry magic you can do to delegate the problem to Windows itself? Specifically dealing with Win32 here (unmanaged C++) but happy to hear more general solutions as long as they are workable on Windows XP or alter.

  • Add a custom jquery validation method not connected to a field

    Normally all validation methods is connected to a field, radiobuttons, dropdowns etc. In my case I would like to do a general custom validation that depends on many fields in my form. I dont want one field of them to become highlighted like a normal "required", i would rather just show a message in the errorcontainer. Is there a simple way to do this I have overlooked?

Different sources appear to say different things and trhe venerable php.net iteslf (appears) not to explicitly state this - although I must admit, I only had a quick look. In cases where I am passing around 'heavy' objects, I need to pass by reference, but I dont want to keep typing: function foo(TypeName& $obj) if I can get away with simply, function foo(TypeName $obj) So what does the standard say?

SharpDX.SharpDXException: HRESULT: [0x80004001], Module: [General], ApiCode: [E_NOTIMPL/Not implemented], Message: Not implemented at SharpDX.Result.CheckError() at SharpDX.MediaFoundation.MediaFactory.Startup(Int32 version, Int32 dwFlags) at SharpDX.MediaFoundation.MediaManager.Startup(Boolean useLightVersion) this is on windows 8 desktop. the same code runs fine on windows 7.
