  • Saving "heavy" image to PDF in MATLAB - rendering problem

    - by yuk
I generate a figure in MATLAB with lot amount of points (100000+) and want to save it into a PDF file. With zbuffer or painters renderer I've got very large and slowly opened file (over 4 Mb) - all points are in vector format. Using OpenGL renderer rasterize the figure in PDF, ok for the plot, but not good for text labels. The file size is about 150 Kb. Try this simplified code, for example: x=linspace(1,10,100000); y=sin(x)+randn(size(x)); plot(x,y,'.') set(gcf,'Renderer','zbuffer') print -dpdf -r300 testpdf_zb set(gcf,'Renderer','painters') print -dpdf -r300 testpdf_pa set(gcf,'Renderer','opengl') print -dpdf -r300 testpdf_op The actual figure is much more complex with several axes and different types of plots. Is there a way to rasterize the figure, but keep text labels as vectors? Another problem with OpenGL is that is does not work in terminal mode (-nosplash -nodesktop) under Mac OSX. Looks like OpenGL is not supported. I have to use terminal mode for automation. The MATLAB version I run is 2007b. Mac OSX server 10.4.

  • Android ListActivity with Bitmaps and Garbage Collection issue

    - by chis54
    I have a ListActivity and in it I set my list items with a class that extends SimpleCursorAdapter. I'm overriding bindView to set my Views. I have some TextViews and ImageViews. This is how I set my list items in my cursor adapter: String variableName = "drawable/q" + num + "_200px"; int imageResource = context.getResources().getIdentifier(variableName, "drawable", context.getPackageName()); if (imageResource != 0 ) { // The drawable exists Bitmap b = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(context.getResources(), imageResource); width = b.getWidth(); height = b.getHeight(); imageView.getLayoutParams().width = (int) (width); imageView.getLayoutParams().height = (int) (height); imageView.setImageResource(imageResource); } else { imageView.setImageResource(R.drawable.25trans_200px); } The problem I'm having is whenever I update my list with setListAdapter I get a large amount of garbage collection: D/dalvikvm(18637): GC_EXTERNAL_ALLOC freed 125K, 51% free 2710K/5447K, external 2022K/2137K, paused 75ms D/dalvikvm(18637): GC_EXTERNAL_ALLOC freed 30K, 51% free 2701K/5447K, external 2669K/2972K, paused 64ms D/dalvikvm(18637): GC_EXTERNAL_ALLOC freed 23K, 51% free 2713K/5447K, external 3479K/3579K, paused 53ms D/dalvikvm(18637): GC_EXTERNAL_ALLOC freed 22K, 51% free 2706K/5447K, external 3303K/3352K, paused 64ms D/dalvikvm(18637): GC_EXTERNAL_ALLOC freed 21K, 51% free 2722K/5447K, external 3569K/3685K, paused 102ms D/dalvikvm(18637): GC_EXTERNAL_ALLOC freed 23K, 50% free 2755K/5447K, external 3499K/3605K, paused 65ms D/dalvikvm(18637): GC_EXTERNAL_ALLOC freed 23K, 50% free 2771K/5447K, external 4213K/4488K, paused 53ms D/dalvikvm(18637): GC_EXTERNAL_ALLOC freed 18K, 49% free 2796K/5447K, external 5057K/5343K, paused 75ms D/dalvikvm(18637): GC_EXTERNAL_ALLOC freed 28K, 49% free 2803K/5447K, external 5944K/5976K, paused 53ms D/dalvikvm( 435): GC_EXPLICIT freed 6K, 54% free 2544K/5511K, external 1625K/2137K, paused 50ms D/dalvikvm( 165): GC_EXPLICIT freed 85K, 52% free 2946K/6087K, external 4838K/5980K, paused 111ms D/dalvikvm( 448): GC_EXPLICIT freed 1K, 54% free 2540K/5511K, external 1625K/2137K, paused 50ms D/dalvikvm( 294): GC_EXPLICIT freed 8K, 55% free 2598K/5703K, external 1625K/2137K, paused 64ms What can I do to avoid this? It's causing my UI to be sluggish and when I scroll, too.

  • Autodiscovery for inclusion tags

    - by Ludwik Trammer
The title may be a little confusing, but I don't know how else to call it. I would like to create a Django project with a large set of applications you could arbitrary turn on or off using INSTALLED_APPS option in settings.py (you would obviously also need to edit urls.py and run syncdb). After being turned on an app should be able to automatically: Register it's content in site-wide search. Luckily django-haystack has this built-in, so it's not a problem. Register cron jobs. django-cron does exactly that. Not a problem. Register a widget that should be displayed on the homepage. The homepage should include a list of boxes with widgets form different applications. I thought about inclusion tags, because you can put them anywhere on a page and they control both content and presentation. The problem is I don't know how to automatically get a list of inclusion tags provided by my applications, and display them one by one on a homepage. I need a way to register them somehow, and then display all registered tags.

  • Boost Unit testing memory reuse causing tests that should fail to pass

    - by Knyphe
We have started using the boost unit testing library for a large existing code base, and I have run into some trouble with unit tests incorrectly passing, seemingly due to the reuse of memory on the stack. Here is my situation: BOOST_AUTO_TEST_CASE(test_select_base_instantiation_default) { SelectBase selectBase(); BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL( selectBase.getSelectType(), false); BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL( selectBase.getTypeName(_T("")); BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL( selectBase.getEntityType(), -1); BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL( selectBase.getDataPos(), -1); } BOOST_AUTO_TEST_CASE(test_select_base_instantiation_default) { SelectBase selectBase(true, _T("abc")); BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL( selectBase.getSelectType(), false); BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL( selectBase.getTypeName(_T("abc")); BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL( selectBase.getEntityType(), -1); BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL( selectBase.getDataPos(), -1); } The first test passed correctly, initializing all the variables. The constructor in the second unit test did not correctly set EntityType or DataPosition, but the unit test passed. I was able to get it to fail by placing some variables on the stack in the second test, like so: BOOST_AUTO_TEST_CASE(test_select_base_instantiation_default) { int a, b; SelectBase selectBase(true, _T("abc")); BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL( selectBase.getSelectType(), false); BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL( selectBase.getTypeName(_T("abc")); BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL( selectBase.getEntityType(), -1); BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL( selectBase.getDataPos(), -1); } If there is only one int, only the dataPos CHECK_EQUAL fails, but if there are two, both EntityType and DataPos fail, so it seems pretty clear that this is an issue with the variables being created on the same stack memory or some such. Is there a good way to clear the memory between each unit test, or am I potentially using the library incorrectly or writing bad tests? Any help would be appreciated.

  • Interactive World Map, highlight countries on mouseover

    - by BrenGG
I need to create an interactive world map on the front page of a site, the view portal will be about 650x200 pixels. The interactivity would include the following, mouse-over a country would highlight (the countries are will literally be filled with "red" for example) that country and display the countries' name (preferably text in a div), I will also be linking the highlighting event with a that will highlight a country when selected. I am having a difficult time finding a suitable solution, I refuse to use or learn a proprietry technology such as flash so it is not an option. I created a simple mockup using openlayers and a custom map image but the countries' markers load too slowly in IE6. Also svg seems too large, as I tried to use RaphaelJS, but abondoned it when I realised the world map data is 1.2mb which is totally un acceptable for the front page of a site.. I am really at a loss on how I am going to do this, my last resort is to manually create 250+ (however many countries there are) pngs and apply mouseover events to hotspots in the image... but this is probably going to be a dead end too.. desperately seeking a solution, any helpful comments will be appreciated!

  • Question regarding ip checksum code

    - by looktt
unsigned short /* this function generates header checksums */ csum (unsigned short *buf, int nwords) { unsigned long sum; for (sum = 0; nwords > 0; nwords--) // add words(16bits) together sum += *buf++; sum = (sum >> 16) + (sum & 0xffff); //add carry over sum += (sum >> 16); //what does this step do??? add possible left-over //byte? But isn't it already added in the loop (if //any)? return ((unsigned short) ~sum); } I assume nwords in the number of 16bits word, not 8bits byte (if there are odd byte, nword is rounded to next large), is it correct? The line sum = (sum 16) + (sum & 0xffff) is to add carry over to make 16bit complement sum += (sum 16); What's the purpose of this step? Add left-over byte? How? Thanks!

  • Why does Tex/Latex not speed up in subsequent runs?

    - by Debilski
I really wonder, why even recent systems of Tex/Latex do not use any caching to speed up later runs. Every time that I fix a single comma*, calling Latex costs me about the same amount of time, because it needs to load and convert every single picture file. (* I know that even changing a tiny comma could affect the whole structure but of course, a well-written cache format could see the impact of that. Also, there might be situations where 100% correctness is not needed as long as it’s fast.) Is there something in the language of Tex which makes this complicated or impossible to accomplish or is it just that in the original implementation of Tex, there was no need for this (because it would have been slow anyway on those large computers)? But then on the other hand, why doesn’t this annoy other people so much that they’ve started a fork which has some sort of caching (or transparent conversion of Tex files to a format which is faster to parse)? Is there anything I can do to speed up subsequent runs of Latex? Except from putting all the stuff into chapterXX.tex files and then commenting them out?

  • RectangleGeometry with relative dimensions... how?

    - by Padu Merloti
I'm trying to replicate the nowadays so fashionable "reflex" effect on a controltemplate for buttons I'm creating. The basic idea is to create a rectangle with a gradient fill from white to transparent and then clip some of that semi-transparent rectangle with a rectanglegeometry. The problem is that I don't know how to define a relative rectangle geometry. I kind of worked around width by defining a large value (1000), but height is a problem. For example, it works good for buttons that have a 200 height, but doesn't do anything for smaller buttons. Any ideas? <Rectangle RadiusX="5" RadiusY="5" StrokeThickness="1" Stroke="Transparent"> <Rectangle.Fill> <LinearGradientBrush StartPoint="0,0" EndPoint="0,0.55"> <GradientStop Color="#66ffffff" Offset="0.0" /> <GradientStop Color="Transparent" Offset="1.0" /> </LinearGradientBrush> </Rectangle.Fill> <Rectangle.Clip> <RectangleGeometry Rect="0,0,1000,60" /> </Rectangle.Clip> </Rectangle>

  • How to improve efficiency in loops?

    - by Jacob Worldly
    I have the following code, which translates the input string into morse code. My code runs through every letter in the string and then through every character in the alphabet. This is very inefficient, because what if I was reading from a very large file, instead of a small alphabet string. Is there any way that I could improve my code, Maybe using the module re, to match my string with the morse code characters? morse_alphabet = ".- -... -.-. -.. . ..-. --. .... .. .--- -.- .-.. -- -. --- .--. --.- .-. ... - ..- ...- .-- -..- -.-- --.." ALPHABET = "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz" morse_letters = morse_alphabet.split(" ") result = [] count_character = 0 def t(code): for character in code: count_letter = 0 for letter in ALPHABET: lower_character = code[count_character].lower() lower_letter = letter.lower() if lower_character == lower_letter: result.append(morse_letters[count_letter]) count_letter += 1 count_character += 1 return result

  • How to replace pairs of strings in two files to identical IDs?

    - by Péter Török
Sorry if the title is not very intelligible, I couldn't come up with anything better. Hopefully my explanation is clear enough: I have a pair of rather large log files with very similar content, except that some strings are different between the two. A couple of examples: UnifiedClassLoader3@19518cc | UnifiedClassLoader3@d0357a JBossRMIClassLoader@13c2d7f | JBossRMIClassLoader@191777e That is, wherever the first file contains UnifiedClassLoader3@19518cc, the second contains UnifiedClassLoader3@d0357a, and so on. [Update] There are about 40 distinct pairs of such identifiers.[/Update] I want to replace these with identical IDs so that I can spot the really important differences between the two files. I.e. I want to replace all occurrences of both UnifiedClassLoader3@19518cc in file1 and UnifiedClassLoader3@d0357a in file2 with UnifiedClassLoader3@1; all occurrences of both JBossRMIClassLoader@13c2d7f in file1 and JBossRMIClassLoader@191777e in file2 with JBossRMIClassLoader@2 etc. Using the Cygwin shell, so far I managed to list all different identifiers occurring in one of the files with grep -o -e 'ClassLoader[0-9]*@[0-9a-f][0-9a-f]*' file1.log | sort | uniq However, now the original order is lost, so I don't know which is the pair of which ID in the other file. With grep -n I can get the line number, so the sort would preserve the order of appearance, but then I can't weed out the duplicate occurrences. Unfortunately grep can not print only the first match of a pattern. I figured I could save the list of identifiers produced by the above command into a file, then iterate over the patterns in the file with grep -n | head -n 1, concatenate the results and sort them again. The result would be something like 2 ClassLoader3@19518cc 137 ClassLoader@13c2d7f 563 ClassLoader3@1267649 ... Then I could (either manually or with sed itself) massage this into a sed command like sed -e 's/ClassLoader3@19518cc/ClassLoader3@2/g' -e 's/ClassLoader@13c2d7f/ClassLoader@137/g' -e 's/ClassLoader3@1267649/ClassLoader3@563/g' file1.log > file1_processed.log and similarly for file2. However, before I start, I would like to verify that my plan is the simplest possible working solution to this. Is there any flaw in this approach? Is there a simpler way?

  • Improve speed of a JOIN in MySQL

    - by ran2
Dear all, I know there a similar threads around, but this is really the first time I realize that query speed might affect me - so it´s not that easy for me to really make the transfer from other folks problems. That being said I have using the following query successfully with smaller data, but if I use it on what are mildly large tables (about 120,000 records). I am waiting for hours. INSERT INTO anothertable (id,someint1,someint1,somevarchar1,somevarchar1) SELECT DISTINCT md.id,md.someint1,md.someint1,md.somevarchar1,pd.somevarchar1 from table1 AS md JOIN table2 AS pd ON (md.id = pd.id); Tables 1 and 2 contain about 120,000 records. The query has been running for almost 2 hours right now. Is this normal? Do I just have to wait. I really have no idea, but I am pretty sure that one could do it better since it´s my very first try. I read about indexing, but dont know yet what to index in my case? Thanks for any suggestions - feel free to point my to the very beginners guides ! best matt

  • How to do timer with Nios II assembly?

    - by Nick Rosencrantz
I've got an assignment in a computer engineering course that I don't fully understand since it is so large. Anyway I started coding the parts of it and it seems we should make code for some sort of timer. I've started put together the subroutine for snaptime but I'm not sure what I want: .equ timer, 0x920 .global snaptime .text .align 2 snaptime: movia r8,timer # basadressen till timern stw r0,12(r8) # sparar 0 till snapl movi r9,0b0110 # spara 6 i r9 stw r9,16(r8) # spara r9 movi ... ? andi r10,r10,0xFFFF The manual for Nios II assembly is here and the C code for what I'm trying to do is: #define TIMER_1_BASE ((volatile unsigned int*) 0x920) int snaptime (void) { int snaphight; int snaplow; int snap; TIMER_1_BASE[4]=0; snaphigh = TIMER_1_BASE[5] & 0xffffff; snaplow = TIMER_1_BASE[4] & 0xffffff; snap = snaphigh*65536+snaplow; return (snap); } Perhaps you can inspect the C which should be properly defined and see how I make it with assembly since the spec says it should be assembly.

  • Winsock WSAAsyncSelect sending without an infinite buffer

    - by Xexr
Hi, This is more of a design question than a specific code question, I'm sure I am missing the obvious, I just need another set of eyes. I am writing a multi-client server based on WSAAsyncSelect, each connection is made into an object of a connection class I have written which contains associated settings and buffers etc. My question concerns FD_WRITE, I understand how it operates: One FD_WRITE is sent immediately after a connection is established. Thereafter, you should send until WSAEWOULDBLOCK is received at which point you store what is left to send in a buffer, and wait to be told that it is ok to send again. This is where I have a problem, how large do I make this holding buffer within each connections object? The amount of time until a new FD_WRITE is received is unknown, I could be attempting to send a lot of stuff during this period, all the time adding to my outgoing buffer. If I make the buffer dynamic, memory usage could spiral out of control if for whatever reason, I am unable to send() and reduce the buffer. So my question is how do you generally handle this situation? Note I am not talking about the network buffer itself which winsock uses, but one of my own creation used to "queue" up sends. Hope I explained that well enough, thanks all!

  • How can i get rid of 'ORA-01489: result of string concatenation is too long' in this query?

    - by core_pro
this query gets the dominating sets in a network. so for example given a network A<----->B B<----->C B<----->D C<----->E D<----->C D<----->E F<----->E it returns B,E B,F A,E but it doesn't work for large data because i'm using string methods in my result. i have been trying to remove the string methods and return a view or something but to no avail With t as (select 'A' as per1, 'B' as per2 from dual union all select 'B','C' from dual union all select 'B','D' from dual union all select 'C','B' from dual union all select 'C','E' from dual union all select 'D','C' from dual union all select 'D','E' from dual union all select 'E','C' from dual union all select 'E','D' from dual union all select 'F','E' from dual) ,t2 as (select distinct least(per1, per2) as per1, greatest(per1, per2) as per2 from t union select distinct greatest(per1, per2) as per1, least(per1, per2) as per1 from t) ,t3 as (select per1, per2, row_number() over (partition by per1 order by per2) as rn from t2) ,people as (select per, row_number() over (order by per) rn from (select distinct per1 as per from t union select distinct per2 from t) ) ,comb as (select sys_connect_by_path(per,',')||',' as p from people connect by rn > prior rn ) ,find as (select p, per2, count(*) over (partition by p) as cnt from ( select distinct comb.p, t3.per2 from comb, t3 where instr(comb.p, ','||t3.per1||',') > 0 or instr(comb.p, ','||t3.per2||',') > 0 ) ) ,rnk as (select p, rank() over (order by length(p)) as rnk from find where cnt = (select count(*) from people) order by rnk ) select distinct trim(',' from p) as p from rnk where rnk.rnk = 1`

  • Best practice way to handle variable content margin?

    - by Aithne
Ok, so a quick site that I am throwing together for a friend has about 20 static pages. Each one with a small amount of content. the div Container contains, well, the div Content, and the div Content contains, obviously, the content that changes on each page. Now, depending on the length of the content, I want a different margin at the top. The less content, then the larger the margin. Simply an aesthetic choice. For example, if the content almost fills the static sized container, there is less padding, but a 1 line page of content might be 1/3 of the way down the static container. Centering the content in the div wont do, as that creates too large of a margin. Whats the best way to handle this? A new class for each content with a different margin? A new Id, so that it is in its own special div positioned or margined differently? Inline css on each page to override the standard css for div Content? A differnt spacer div inside Container before Content on each page? Some sort of scripting along the lines of margin of Content = (ContainerHeight - ContentHeight) / 3? Whats the acceptable way of doing this? I don't want to get into bad habits.

  • C++ std::stringstream seemingly causes thread to hang or die under SunOS

    - by stretch
I have an application developed under Linux with GCC 4.2 which makes quite heacy use of stringstreams to wrap and unwrap data being sent over the wire. (Because the Grid API I'm using demands it). Under Linux everything is fine but when I deploy to SunOS (v5.10 running SPARC) and compile with GCC 3.4.6 the app hangs when it reaches the point at which stringstreams are used. In more detail: The main thread accepts requests from clients and starts a new pthread to handle each request. The child thread uses stringstreams to pack data. When the child thread gets to that point it seems to hang for a second and then die. The main thread is unaffected. Are there any known issues with stringstream and GCC 3.4.6 or SunOS or SPARCs? I didn't find anything yet... Can anyone suggest a better way to pack and unpack large amounts of data a strings or byte streams? Apologies for not posting code but this to me seems more involved than a simple syntax error. All the same, the thread crashes: std::stringstream mystringstream; //not here mystringstream << "some data: "; //but here That is, I can declare the stringstream but when I try to use it something goes wrong.

  • App no longer working - any ideas

    - by hamishmcn
I am out of ideas as to why my app has suddenly stopped working - perhaps the collective mind of the SO community can help... Background: I have a large application that has been working up until recently. Now when ever I try and run it I get the error "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005)" This happens before the app gets to _tmain(). It happens in both release and debug builds. I have tried cleaning and rebuilding the projects and rebooted my PC. The call stack just shows entries for kernel32.dll and ntdll.dll The output window shows: First-chance exception at 0x00532c13 in a.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0xabababdb. First-chance exception at 0x7c964ed1 in a.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation. Unhandled exception at 0x7c964ed1 in a.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation. Any ideas? Edit: Okay - found the problem - it was dll related my app uses shared dlls a.dll and b.dll (and others) a.dll hardly every changes (and uses b.dll) b.dll was changed by another developer this morning and a.dll was not rebuilt. Depends.exe did not show any missing dlls, however a.dll no longer works because of the change to b.dll

  • Default boolean value in a array of record - Delphi

    - by James
Hi, I am helping out my company with some old delphi 7 code. There is a record declared at the start that is used throughout to store all the data we want outputted. type TOutput_Type = record result: String; resultoffset: String; selected: boolean; resultcategory: integer; end; and then an array of this is declared Output: array of TOutput_Type; The length is set at the start to a large value, as actual length is unknown. This array is used all over the place, but unfortunately the value selected is not always set when used. My problem is I am adding in a summary of the data, but because selected is not set, delphi seems to give it a random true or false status. Is there a way of setting all instances of selected as true at the start? Seems like a simple enough thing to do, but I'm not a delphi programmer so am unsure if its possible? I know I can go through and add in selected := true every time a new record is made, but I'd like to do it cleanly at the start if possible.... Thanks in advance

  • How to efficiently store and update binary data in Mongodb?

    - by Rocketman
I am storing a large binary array within a document. I wish to continually add bytes to this array and sometimes change the value of existing bytes. I was looking for some $append_bytes and $replace_bytes type of modifiers but it appears that the best I can do is $push for arrays. It seems like this would be doable by performing seek-write type operations if I had access somehow to the underlying bson on disk, but it does not appear to me that there is anyway to do this in mongodb (and probably for good reason). If I were instead to just query this binary array, edit or add to it, and then update the document by rewriting the entire field, how costly will this be? Each binary array will be on the order of 1-2MB, and updates occur once every 5 minutes and across 1000s of documents. Worse, yet there is no easy way to spread these out (in time) and they will usually be happening close to one another on the 5 minute intervals. Does anyone have a good feel for how disastrous this will be? Seems like it would be problematic. An alternative would be to store this binary data as separate files on disk, implement a thread pool to efficiently manipulate the files on disk, and reference the filename from my mongodb document. (I'm using python and pymongo so I was looking at pytables). I'd prefer to avoid this though if possible. Is there any other alternative that I am overlooking here? Thanks in advnace.

  • Python, Ruby, and C#: Use cases?

    - by thaorius
Hi everyone. For as long as I can remember, I've always had a "favorite" language, which I use for most projects, until, for some particular reason, there is no way/point on using it for project XYZ. At that point, I find myself rusty (and sometimes outdated) on other languages+libraries+toolchains. So I decided, I would just use some languages/libs/tools for some things, and some for other, effectively keeping them fresh (there would obviously be exceptions, I'm not looking for an arbitrary rule set, but some guidelines). I wanted an opinion on what would be your standard use cases (new projects) for Python, Ruby, and C# (Mono). At the moment, I have time like this:Languages: C#: Mid-Large Sized Projects (mainly server-side daemons) High Performance (I hardly ever need C's performance, but Python just doesn't cut it) Relatively Low Footprint (vs the JVM, for example) Ruby: Web Applications Python: General Use Scripts (automation, system config, etc) Small-Mid Sized Projects Prototyping Web Applications About Ruby, I have no idea what to use it for that I can't use Python for (specially considering Python is more easily found installed by default). And I like both languages (though I'm really new to Ruby), which makes things even worse. As for C#, I have not used a Windows powered computer in a few years, I don't make things for Windows computers, and I don't mind waiting for Mono to implement some new features. That being said, I haven't found many people on the internet using it for server-sided *nix programming (not web related). I would appreciate some insight on this too. Thanks for your time.

  • Django: How to dynamically add tag field to third party apps without touching app's source code

    - by Chris Lawlor
Scenario: large project with many third party apps. Want to add tagging to those apps without having to modify the apps' source. My first thought was to first specify a list of models in settings.py (like ['appname.modelname',], and call django-tagging's register function on each of them. The register function adds a TagField and a custom manager to the specified model. The problem with that approach is that the function needs to run BEFORE the DB schema is generated. I tried running the register function directly in settings.py, but I need django.db.models.get_model to get the actual model reference from only a string, and I can't seem to import that from settings.py - no matter what I try I get an ImportError. The tagging.register function imports OK however. So I changed tactics and wrote a custom management command in an otherwise empty app. The problem there is that the only signal which hooks into syncdb is post_syncdb which is useless to me since it fires after the DB schema has been generated. The only other approach I can think of at the moment is to generate and run a 'south' like database schema migration. This seems more like a hack than a solution. This seems like it should be a pretty common need, but I haven't been able to find a clean solution. So my question is: Is it possible to dynamically add fields to a model BEFORE the schema is generated, but more specifically, is it possible to add tagging to a third party model without editing it's source. To clarify, I know it is possible to create and store Tags without having a TagField on the model, but there is a major flaw in that approach in that it is difficult to simultaneously create and tag a new model.

  • C/C++: feedback in analyzing a code example

    - by KaiserJohaan
Hello, I have a piece of code from an assignment I am uncertain about. I feel confident that I know the answer, but I just want to double-check with the community incase there's something I forgot. The title is basically secure coding and the question is just to explain the results. int main() { unsigned int i = 1; unsigned int c = 1; while (i > 0) { i = i*2; c++; } printf("%d\n", c); return 0; } My reasoning is this: At first glance you could imagine the code would run forever, considering it's initialized to a positive value and ever increasing. This of course is wrong because eventually the value will grow so large it will cause an integer overflow. This in turn is not entirely true either, because eventally it will force the variable 'i' to be signed by making the last bit to 1 and therefore regarded as a negative number, therefore terminating the loop. So it is not writing to unallocated memory and therefore cause integer overflow, but rather violating the data type and therefore causing the loop to terminate. I am quite sure this is the reason, but I just want to double check. Any opinions?

  • ASP MVC - Routing Required?

    - by evo_9
I've been reading up on MVC2 which came in VS2010 and it sounds pretty interesting. I'm actually in the middle of a large multi-tenant application project, and have just started coding the UI. I'm considering changing to MVC as I'm not that far along at this point. I have some questions about the Routing capabilities, namely are they required to use MVC or can I more or less ignore Routing? Or do I have to setup a default routing record that will make things work like standard ASPX (as far as routing alone is concerned)? The reason why I don't want to use Routing is because I've already defined a custom URL 'rewrite' mechanism of my own (which fires on session_start). In addition, I'm using jquery and opens-standards for the entire UI, and MVC's aspx overhead-free approach seems like a better fit based on how I've already started to build the application (I am not using viewstate at all, for example). I guess my big concern is whether the routing can be ignored, of if I will have to re-implement my custom URL rewriting to work with MVC, and if that's the case, how would I do that? As a new Routing routine, or stick with the session_start (if that's even possible?). Lastly, I don't want to use anything even remotely 'intelligent/readable' for the url - for a site like StackOverflow, the readability of the URL is a positive, but the opposite is true if it's not a public website like this one. In fact, it would seem to me that the more friendly MVC routing URL (which indirectly show method names) could pose a security risk on a private, non-public website app like I'm developing. For all these reasons I would love to use the lightweight aspects of MVC but skip the Routing entirely - is this possible?

  • OpenGL ES - how to keep some object at a fixed size?

    - by OMH
I'm working on a little game in OpenGL ES. In the background, there is a world/map. The map is just a large texture. Zoom/pinch/pan is used to move around. And I'm using glOrthof (left, right, bottom, top, zNear, zFar) to implement the zoom/pinch. When I zoom in, the sprites on top of the map is also zoomed in. But I would like to have some sprites stay at a fixed size. I could probably calculate a scale factor, depending on the parameters to glOrthof, but there must be a more natural and straightforward way of doing that, instead of scaling the sprites down when I zoom in. If I add some text or some GUI elements on top of the map, they should definately have a fixed size. Is there a solution to do this, or do I have to leave fixed values in glOrthof and implement zoom/pinch in another way? EDIT: To be more clear: I want sprites that zoom in/out along with the map, but stay at the same size. I have some elements that are like the pins on the iPhone's map application. When you zoom, the pins stay the same size, but move around on the screen to stay on the same spot on the map. That is mainly what I want a solution for. Solutions for this already came below, thanks!

  • adapting combination code for larger list

    - by vbNewbie
I have the following code to generate combinations of string for a small list and would like to adapt this for a large list of over 300 string words. Can anyone suggest how to alter this code or to use a different method. Public Class combinations Public Shared Sub main() Dim myAnimals As String = "cat dog horse ape hen mouse" Dim myAnimalCombinations As String() = BuildCombinations(myAnimals) For Each combination As String In myAnimalCombinations 'Look on the Output Tab for the results! Console.WriteLine("(" & combination & ")") Next combination Console.ReadLine() End Sub Public Shared Function BuildCombinations(ByVal inputString As String) As String() 'Separate the sentence into useable words. Dim wordsArray As String() = inputString.Split(" ".ToCharArray) 'A plase to store the results as we build them Dim returnArray() As String = New String() {""} 'The 'combination level' that we're up to Dim wordDistance As Integer = 1 'Go through all the combination levels... For wordDistance = 1 To wordsArray.GetUpperBound(0) 'Go through all the words at this combination level... For wordIndex As Integer = 0 To wordsArray.GetUpperBound(0) - wordDistance 'Get the first word of this combination level Dim combination As New System.Text.StringBuilder(wordsArray(wordIndex)) 'And all all the remaining words a this combination level For combinationIndex As Integer = 1 To wordDistance combination.Append(" " & wordsArray(wordIndex + combinationIndex)) Next combinationIndex 'Add this combination to the results returnArray(returnArray.GetUpperBound(0)) = combination.ToString 'Add a new row to the results, ready for the next combination ReDim Preserve returnArray(returnArray.GetUpperBound(0) + 1) Next wordIndex Next wordDistance 'Get rid of the last, blank row. ReDim Preserve returnArray(returnArray.GetUpperBound(0) - 1) 'Return combinations to the calling method. Return returnArray End Function End Class
