  • Wrapping a pure virtual method with multiple arguments with Boost.Python

    - by fallino
    Hello, I followed the "official" tutorial and others but still don't manage to expose this pure virtual method (getPeptide) : ms_mascotresults.hpp class ms_mascotresults { public: ms_mascotresults(ms_mascotresfile &resfile, const unsigned int flags, double minProbability, int maxHitsToReport, const char * unigeneIndexFile, const char * singleHit = 0); ... virtual ms_peptide getPeptide(const int q, const int p) const = 0; } ms_mascotresults.cpp #include <boost/python.hpp> using namespace boost::python; #include "msparser.hpp" // which includes "ms_mascotresults.hpp" using namespace matrix_science; #include <iostream> #include <sstream> struct ms_mascotresults_wrapper : ms_mascotresults, wrapper<ms_mascotresults> { ms_peptide getPeptide(const int q, const int p) { this->get_override("getPeptide")(q); this->get_override("getPeptide")(p); } }; BOOST_PYTHON_MODULE(ms_mascotresults) { class_<ms_mascotresults_wrapper, boost::noncopyable>("ms_mascotresults") .def("getPeptide", pure_virtual(&ms_mascotresults::getPeptide) ) ; } Here are the bjam's errors : /usr/local/boost_1_42_0/boost/python/object/value_holder.hpp:66: error: cannot declare field ‘boost::python::objects::value_holder<ms_mascotresults_wrapper>::m_held’ to be of abstract type ‘ms_mascotresults_wrapper’ ms_mascotresults.cpp:12: note: because the following virtual functions are pure within ‘ms_mascotresults_wrapper’: ... include/ms_mascotresults.hpp:334: note: virtual matrix_science::ms_peptide matrix_science::ms_mascotresults::getPeptide(int, int) const ms_mascotresults.cpp: In constructor ‘ms_mascotresults_wrapper::ms_mascotresults_wrapper()’: ms_mascotresults.cpp:12: error: no matching function for call to ‘matrix_science::ms_mascotresults::ms_mascotresults()’ include/ms_mascotresults.hpp:284: note: candidates are: matrix_science::ms_mascotresults::ms_mascotresults(matrix_science::ms_mascotresfile&, unsigned int, double, int, const char*, const char*) include/ms_mascotresults.hpp:109: note: matrix_science::ms_mascotresults::ms_mascotresults(const matrix_science::ms_mascotresults&) ... /usr/local/boost_1_42_0/boost/python/object/value_holder.hpp: In constructor ‘boost::python::objects::value_holder<Value>::value_holder(PyObject*) [with Value = ms_mascotresults_wrapper]’: /usr/local/boost_1_42_0/boost/python/object/value_holder.hpp:137: note: synthesized method ‘ms_mascotresults_wrapper::ms_mascotresults_wrapper()’ first required here /usr/local/boost_1_42_0/boost/python/object/value_holder.hpp:137: error: cannot allocate an object of abstract type ‘ms_mascotresults_wrapper’ ms_mascotresults.cpp:12: note: since type ‘ms_mascotresults_wrapper’ has pure virtual functions So I tried to change the constructor's signature by : BOOST_PYTHON_MODULE(ms_mascotresults) { //class_<ms_mascotresults_wrapper, boost::noncopyable>("ms_mascotresults") class_<ms_mascotresults_wrapper, boost::noncopyable>("ms_mascotresults", init<ms_mascotresfile &, const unsigned int, double, int, const char *,const char *>()) .def("getPeptide", pure_virtual(&ms_mascotresults::getPeptide) ) Giving these errors : /usr/local/boost_1_42_0/boost/python/object/value_holder.hpp:66: error: cannot declare field ‘boost::python::objects::value_holder<ms_mascotresults_wrapper>::m_held’ to be of abstract type ‘ms_mascotresults_wrapper’ ms_mascotresults.cpp:12: note: because the following virtual functions are pure within ‘ms_mascotresults_wrapper’: include/ms_mascotresults.hpp:334: note: virtual matrix_science::ms_peptide matrix_science::ms_mascotresults::getPeptide(int, int) const ... ms_mascotresults.cpp:24: instantiated from here /usr/local/boost_1_42_0/boost/python/object/value_holder.hpp:137: error: no matching function for call to ‘ms_mascotresults_wrapper::ms_mascotresults_wrapper(matrix_science::ms_mascotresfile&, const unsigned int&, const double&, const int&, const char* const&, const char* const&)’ ms_mascotresults.cpp:12: note: candidates are: ms_mascotresults_wrapper::ms_mascotresults_wrapper(const ms_mascotresults_wrapper&) ms_mascotresults.cpp:12: note: ms_mascotresults_wrapper::ms_mascotresults_wrapper() If I comment the virtual function getPeptide in the .hpp, it builds perfectly with this constructor : class_<ms_mascotresults>("ms_mascotresults", init<ms_mascotresfile &, const unsigned int, double, int, const char *,const char *>() ) So I'm a bit lost...

  • New line in GridView cell

    - by Chris
    I'm binding a GridView to an LINQ query. Some of the fields in the objects created by the LINQ statement are strings, and need to contain new lines. Apparently, GridView HTML-encodes everything in each cell, so I can't insert a <br /> to create a new line within a cell. How do I tell GridView not to HTML encode the contents of cells? Maybe I should use a different control instead?

  • How do I sort an array of Person Objects by using compareto()?

    Here is my code: > import java.util.Scanner; import java.util.Arrays; /** This class tests the Person class. */ public class PersonDemo { public static void main(String[] args) { int count = 0; Scanner in = new Scanner(System.in); boolean more = false; Person first = null; Person last = null; while (more) { System.out.println( "Please enter the person's name or a blank line to quit"); String name = in.nextLine(); if (name.equals("")) more = false; else { Person p = new Person(name); //new person object created with inputted name Person[] people = new Person[10]; //new array of 10 person objects people[count] = p; //declare person object with index of variable count as the new person object first = people[count]; // I have no idea what to do here. • How to efficiently save changes made in UI/main thread with Core Data?

    - by Jaanus
    So, there have been several posts here about importing and saving data from an external data source into Core Data. Apple documents a reasonable pattern for this: "import and save on background thread, merge saved objects to main thread." All fine and good. I have a related but different problem: the user is modifying data in the UI and main thread, and thus modifies state of some objects in the managed object context (MOC). I would like to save these changes from time to time. What is a good way to do that? Now, you could say that I could do the same: create a background thread with its own MOC and pass the changed objectID-s there. The catch-22 for me with this is that an object's ID changes when it is saved, and I cannot guarantee the order of things happening. I may end up passing a different objectID into the background thread for the same object, based on whether the object has been previously saved or not, and I don't know if Core Data can resolve this and see that different objectID-s are pointing to the same object and not create duplicates for me. (I could test this, but I'm lazywebbing with this question first.) One thought I had: I could always do MOC saves on a background thread, and queue them up with operationqueue, so that there is always only one save in progress. I would not create a new MOC, I would just use the same MOC as in main thread. Now, this is not thread safe and when someone modifies the MOC in main thread while it is being saved in background thread, the results will probably be catastrophic. But, minus the thread safety, you can see what kind of solution I'd wish for. To be clear, the problem I need to fix is that if I just do the save in main thread, it blocks the UI for an unacceptably long period of time, I want to move the save to background thread. So, questions: what about the reasoning of an object ID changing during saving, and Core Data being able to resolve them to the same object? Would this be the right way of addressing this problem? any other good ways of doing this?

  • PagerView overlapping PagerTabStrip / PagerTitleStrip

    - by user1256169
    I've been trying for about a week to get my PagerView not to overlap the TitleStrip. I've tried absolutely everything I can think of, and one StackOverflow question that looked like the same question, had an answer that wasn't applicable. It appears that both the PagerTitleStrip and the TextView start at 0,0 (left,top) Any help would be appreciated. Note that I can't use any XML (inc Layout.xml) so it's all done programatically. Here's a full working example of my problem: package com.example.projname; import android.app.Activity; import android.os.Bundle; import android.support.v4.view.PagerAdapter; import android.support.v4.view.PagerTabStrip; import android.support.v4.view.ViewPager; import android.view.Gravity; import android.view.View; import android.view.ViewGroup; import android.view.ViewGroup.LayoutParams; import android.widget.TextView; public class MainActivity extends Activity { @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); MyPagerAdapter myPagerAdapter = new MyPagerAdapter(); PagerTabStrip myPagerTabStrip = new PagerTabStrip(this); myPagerTabStrip.setGravity(Gravity.TOP); ViewPager viewPager = new ViewPager(this); viewPager.addView(myPagerTabStrip, LayoutParams.MATCH_PARENT, LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT); viewPager.setAdapter(myPagerAdapter); setContentView(viewPager); } class MyPagerAdapter extends PagerAdapter { public final String[] Titles = { "Title One", "Title Two", "Title Three", "Title Four", "Title Five" }; @Override public int getCount() { return Titles.length; } @Override public boolean isViewFromObject(View view, Object object) { return (view == object); } @Override public CharSequence getPageTitle(int position) { return Titles[position]; } @Override public Object instantiateItem(ViewGroup container, int position) { TextView textView = new TextView(getApplicationContext()); String myString = new String("Page " + (position + 1) + "\r\n"); textView.setText(myString + myString + myString + myString + myString + myString); container.addView(textView); return textView; } @Override public void destroyItem(ViewGroup container, int position, Object object) { container.removeView((View) object); } } } Edit: Adding a screenshot of the problem:

  • Ajax doesn't trigger a change-event on a webkit based browser

    - by user319464
    I have adapted a Jquery plugin to for-fill my needs to send GET requests to servers as a way of "pinging" them. I've also added some javascript code to add some fancy features like: depending on the changed value in a that the Jquery plugin changes, it changes the Icon accordingly. To make it all work essentially, I made so that when Ajax gets a "complete" event, it forces a "onChange" event to the span, triggering the javascript validation function to change the status icons. Here is the code of my slightly modified jQuery Plugin: /** * ping for jQuery * * Adapted by Carroarmato0 (to actually work instead of randomly "pinging" nowhere instead of faking * * @auth Jessica * @link http://www.skiyo.cn/demo/jquery.ping/ * */ (function($) { $.fn.ping = function(options) { var opts = $.extend({}, $.fn.ping.defaults, options); return this.each(function() { var ping, requestTime, responseTime ; var target = $(this); var server = target.html(); target.html('<img src="img/loading.gif" alt="loading" />'); function ping() { $.ajax({url: 'http://' + server, type: 'GET', dataType: 'html', timeout: 30000, beforeSend : function() { requestTime = new Date().getTime(); }, complete : function() { responseTime = new Date().getTime(); ping = Math.abs(requestTime - responseTime); if (ping > 2000) { target.text('niet bereikbaar'); } else { target.text(ping + opts.unit); } target.change(); } }); } ping(); opts.interval != 0 && setInterval(ping,opts.interval * 1000); }); }; $.fn.ping.defaults = { interval: 3, unit: 'ms' }; })(jQuery); target.change(); is the code that triggers the "onchange" event in the span: echo " <td class=\"center\"><span id=\"ping$pingNb\" onChange=\"checkServerIcon(this)\" >" .$server['IP'] . "</span></td>"; In Firefox this works, checkServerIcon(this) gets executed and passes the span object to the function. function checkServerIcon(object) { var delayText = object.innerHTML; var delay = delayText.substring(0, delayText.length - 2); if ( isInteger(delay) ) { object.parentNode.previousSibling.parentNode.getElementsByTagName('img')[0].src = 'img/servers/enable_server.png'; } else { if (delay == "bezig.") { object.parentNode.previousSibling.parentNode.getElementsByTagName('img')[0].src = 'img/servers/search_server.png'; } else { object.parentNode.previousSibling.parentNode.getElementsByTagName('img')[0].src = 'img/servers/desable_server.png'; } } } My guess would be that there's something different in WebKit browsers in the way object.parentNode.previousSibling.parentNode. .... works...

  • What is `objc_msgSend_fixup`, exactly?

    - by Luis Antonio Botelho O. Leite
    I'm messing around with the Objective-C runtime, trying to compile objective-c code without linking it against libobjc, and I'm having some segmentation fault problems with a program, so I generated an assembly file from it. I think it's not necessary to show the whole assembly file. At some point of my main function, I've got the following line (which, by the way, is the line after which I get the seg fault): callq *l_objc_msgSend_fixup_alloc and here is the definition for l_objc_msgSend_fixup_alloc: .hidden l_objc_msgSend_fixup_alloc # @"\01l_objc_msgSend_fixup_alloc" .type l_objc_msgSend_fixup_alloc,@object .section "__DATA, __objc_msgrefs, coalesced","aw",@progbits .weak l_objc_msgSend_fixup_alloc .align 16 l_objc_msgSend_fixup_alloc: .quad objc_msgSend_fixup .quad L_OBJC_METH_VAR_NAME_ .size l_objc_msgSend_fixup_alloc, 16 I've reimplemented objc_msgSend_fixup as a function (id objc_msgSend_fixup(id self, SEL op, ...)) which returns nil (just to see what happens), but this function isn't even being called (the program crashes before calling it). So, my question is, what is callq *l_objc_msgSend_fixup_alloc supposed to do and what is objc_msgSend_fixup (after l_objc_msgSend_fixup_alloc:) supposed to be (a function or an object)? Edit To better explain, I'm not linking my source file against the objc library. What I'm trying to do is implement some parts of the libray, just to see how it works. Here is an approach of what I've done: #include <stdio.h> #include <objc/runtime.h> @interface MyClass { } +(id) alloc; @end @implementation MyClass +(id) alloc { // alloc the object return nil; } @end id objc_msgSend_fixup(id self, SEL op, ...) { printf("Calling objc_msgSend_fixup()...\n"); // looks for the method implementation for SEL in self's vtable return nil; // Since this is just a test, this function doesn't need to do that } int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { MyClass *m; m = [MyClass alloc]; // At this point, according to the assembly code generated // objc_msgSend_fixup should be called. So, the program should, at least, print // "Calling objc_msgSend_fixup()..." on the screen, but it crashes before // objc_msgSend_fixup() is called... return 0; } If the runtime needs to access the object's vtable to find the correct method to call, what is the function which actually does this? I think it is objc_msgSend_fixup, in this case. So, when objc_msgSend_fixup is called, it receives an object as one of its parameters, and, if this object hasn't been initialized, the function fails. So, I've implemented my own version of objc_msgSend_fixup. According to the assembly source above, it should be called. It doesn't matter if the function is actually looking for the implementation of the selector passed as parameter. I just want objc_msgSend_lookup to be called. But, it's not being called, that is, the function that looks for the object's data is not even being called, instead of being called and cause a fault (because it returns a nil (which, by the way, doesn't matter)). The program seg fails before objc_msgSend_lookup is called...

  • Different positions in ViewPager

    - by Kalai Selvan.G
    In my Application am using ViewPager to swipe the images,which comes through webservice as URL. Everything goes smoothly,the problem is while swiping myself getting the position as collapsed one.. Swipe left-right: positions are 1,2,3,4,5,etc.. if i stops swiping at 5th pos and started to Swipe from right-left: positions are 2,1...why this happens? I need to catch the position of the imageURL to find out the ID of the specific image and so i need to download and set it as wallpaper.. Normally while we swipe from right-left,the positions should decrease like 4,3,2,1. Also in debugger mode i got some start position,end position,last position with different values.. Any Clue about ViewPager. Here is my code: public class ImagePagerActivity extends BaseActivity { private ViewPager pager; private DisplayImageOptions options; public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.ac_image_pager); Bundle bundle = getIntent().getExtras(); String[] imageUrls = bundle.getStringArray(Extra.IMAGES); int pagerPosition = bundle.getInt(Extra.IMAGE_POSITION, 0); options = new DisplayImageOptions.Builder() .showImageForEmptyUrl(R.drawable.image_for_empty_url) .cacheOnDisc() .decodingType(DecodingType.MEMORY_SAVING) .build(); pager = (ViewPager) findViewById(R.id.pager); pager.setAdapter(new ImagePagerAdapter(imageUrls)); pager.setCurrentItem(pagerPosition); } private class ImagePagerAdapter extends PagerAdapter { private String[] images; private LayoutInflater inflater; ImagePagerAdapter(String[] images) { this.images = images; inflater = getLayoutInflater(); } @Override public void destroyItem(View container, int position, Object object) { ((ViewPager) container).removeView((View) object); } @Override public void finishUpdate(View container) { } @Override public int getCount() { return images.length; } @Override public Object instantiateItem(View view, int position) { final FrameLayout imageLayout = (FrameLayout) inflater.inflate(R.layout.item_pager_image, null); final ImageView imageView = (ImageView) imageLayout.findViewById(R.id.image); final ProgressBar spinner = (ProgressBar) imageLayout.findViewById(R.id.loading); imageLoader.displayImage(images[position], imageView, options, new ImageLoadingListener() { public void onLoadingStarted() { spinner.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE); } public void onLoadingFailed() { spinner.setVisibility(View.GONE); imageView.setImageResource(android.R.drawable.ic_delete); } public void onLoadingComplete() { spinner.setVisibility(View.GONE); } }); ((ViewPager) view).addView(imageLayout, 0); return imageLayout; } @Override public boolean isViewFromObject(View view, Object object) { return view.equals(object); } @Override public void restoreState(Parcelable state, ClassLoader loader) { } @Override public Parcelable saveState() { return null; } @Override public void startUpdate(View container) { } } }

  • Constructor Injection and when to use a Service Locator

    - by Simon
    I'm struggling to understand parts of StructureMap's usage. In particular, in the documentation a statement is made regarding a common anti-pattern, the use of StructureMap as a Service Locator only instead of constructor injection (code samples straight from Structuremap documentation): public ShippingScreenPresenter() { _service = ObjectFactory.GetInstance<IShippingService>(); _repository = ObjectFactory.GetInstance<IRepository>(); } instead of: public ShippingScreenPresenter(IShippingService service, IRepository repository) { _service = service; _repository = repository; } This is fine for a very short object graph, but when dealing with objects many levels deep, does this imply that you should pass down all the dependencies required by the deeper objects right from the top? Surely this breaks encapsulation and exposes too much information about the implementation of deeper objects. Let's say I'm using the Active Record pattern, so my record needs access to a data repository to be able to save and load itself. If this record is loaded inside an object, does that object call ObjectFactory.CreateInstance() and pass it into the active record's constructor? What if that object is inside another object. Does it take the IRepository in as its own parameter from further up? That would expose to the parent object the fact that we're access the data repository at this point, something the outer object probably shouldn't know. public class OuterClass { public OuterClass(IRepository repository) { // Why should I know that ThingThatNeedsRecord needs a repository? // that smells like exposed implementation to me, especially since // ThingThatNeedsRecord doesn't use the repo itself, but passes it // to the record. // Also where do I create repository? Have to instantiate it somewhere // up the chain of objects ThingThatNeedsRecord thing = new ThingThatNeedsRecord(repository); thing.GetAnswer("question"); } } public class ThingThatNeedsRecord { public ThingThatNeedsRecord(IRepository repository) { this.repository = repository; } public string GetAnswer(string someParam) { // create activeRecord(s) and process, returning some result // part of which contains: ActiveRecord record = new ActiveRecord(repository, key); } private IRepository repository; } public class ActiveRecord { public ActiveRecord(IRepository repository) { this.repository = repository; } public ActiveRecord(IRepository repository, int primaryKey); { this.repositry = repository; Load(primaryKey); } public void Save(); private void Load(int primaryKey) { this.primaryKey = primaryKey; // access the database via the repository and set someData } private IRepository repository; private int primaryKey; private string someData; } Any thoughts would be appreciated. Hey guys, I am tracking an object that is thrown in air, and this object governs a parabolic pattern. Im tracking the object through a series of 30 images. I managed to exclude all the background and keep the object apparent, then used its centroid to get its coordinates and plot them. Now im supposed to predict where the object is going to fall, so I used polyfit & polyval .. the problem is, matlab says ??? Index exceeds matrix dimensions. Now the centroid creates its own structure with a row and 2 columns. Everytime the object moves in the loop, it updates the first row only .. Here is part of the code : For N=1:30 . . . x=centroid(1,1); % extract first row and column for x y=centroid(1,2); % extract secnd row and column for x plot_xy=plot(x,y) set(plot_xy,'XData',x(1:N),'YData',y(1:N)); fitting=polyfit(x(1:N),y(1:N),2); parabola=plot(x,nan(23,1)); evaluate=polyval(fitting,x); set(parabola,'YData',evaluate) . . end The error message I get is ??? Index exceeds matrix dimensions. It seems that (1:N) is causing the problems .. I honestly do not know why .. But when I remove N, the object is plotted along with its points, but polyfitting wont work, it gives me an error saying : Warning: Polynomial is not unique; degree >= number of data points. > In polyfit at 72 If I made it (1:N-1) or something, it plots more points before it starts giving me the same error (not unique ...) . Any ideas why ?? Thanks alot !!

  • How to initiate chatting between two clients and two clients only, using applets and servlets?

    - by mithun1538
    Hello everyone, I first need to apologize for my earlier questions. (You can check my profile for them)They seemed to ask more questions than give answers. Hence, I am laying down the actual question that started all them absurd questions. I am trying to design a chat applet. Till now, I have coded the applet, servlet and communication between the applet and the servlet. The code in the servlet side is such that I was able to establish chatting between clients using the applets, but the code was more like a broadcast all feature, i.e. all clients would be chatting with each other. That was my first objective when I started designing the chat applet. The second step is chatting between only two specific users, much like any other chat application we have. So this was my idea for it: I create an instance of the servlet that has the 'broadcast-all' code. I then pass the address of this instance to the respective clients. 2 client applets use the address to then chat. Technically the code is 'broadcast-all', but since only 2 clients are connected to it, it gives the chatting between two clients feature. Thus, groups of 2 clients have different instances of the same servlet, and each instance handles chatting between two clients at a max. However, as predicted, the idea didn't materialize! I tried to create an instance of the servlet but the only solution for that was using sessions on the servlet side, and I don't know how to use this session for later communications. I then tried to modify my broadcast-all code. In that code, I was using classes that implemented Observer and Observable interfaces. So the next idea that I got was: Create a new object of the Observable class(say class_1). This object be common to 2 clients. 2 clients that wish to chat will use same object of the class_1. 2 other clients will use a different object of class_1. But the problem here lies with the class that implements the Observer interface(say class_2). Since this has observers monitoring the same type of class, namely class_1, how do I establish an observer monitoring one object of class_1 and another observer monitoring another object of the same class class_1 (Because notifyObservers() would notify all the observers and I can't assign a particular observer to a particular object)? I first decided to ask individual problems, like how to create instances of servlets, using objects of observable and observer and so on in stackoverflow... but I got confused even more. Can anyone give me an idea how to establish chatting between two clients only?(I am using Http and not sockets or RMI). Regards, Mithun. P.S. Thanks to all who replied to my previous (absurd) queries. I should have stated the purpose earlier so that you guys could help me better.

  • What is the best way to read and write cXML documents in C# ?

    - by tetranz
    I know this is a vague open ended question. I'm hoping to get some general direction. I need to add cXML punchout to an ASP.NET C# site / application. This is replacing something that I wrote years ago in ColdFusion. I'm a reasonably experienced C# developer but I haven't done much with XML. There seems to be lots of different options for processing XML in .NET. Here's the open ended question: Assuming that I have an XML document in some form, eg a file or a string, what is the best way to read it into my code? I want to get the data and then query databases etc. The cXML document size and our traffic volumes are easily small enough so that loading the a cXML document into memory is not a problem. Should I: 1) Manually build classes based on the dtd and use the XML Serializer? 2) Use a tool to generate classes. There are sample cXML files downloadable from Ariba.com. I tried xsd.exe to generate an xsd and then xsd.exe /c to generate classes. When I try to deserialize I get errors because there seems to be "confusion" around whether some elements should be single values or arrays. I tried the CodeXS online tool but that gives errors in it's log and errors if I try to deserialize a sample document. 2) Create a dataset and ReadXml()? 3) Create a typed dataset and ReadXml()? 4) Use Linq to XML. I often use Linq to Objects so I'm familiar with Linq in general but I'm struggling to see what it gives me in this situation. 5) Some other means. I guess I need to improve my understanding of XML in general but even so ... am I missing some obvious way of doing this? In the old ColdFusion site I found a free component ("tag") which basically ignored any schema and read the XML into a "structure" which is essentially a series of nested hash tables which was then easy to read in code. That was probably quite sloppy but it worked. I also need to generate XML files from my C# objects. Maybe Linq to XML will be good for that. I could start with a default "template" document and manipulate it before saving. Thanks for any pointers ...

  • Detecting that a MemberExpression has a value

    - by cs
    How do I detect if a MemberExpression has a value that needs to be compiled/evaluated? I have two separate member expression outputs, the first which has a value, and the second which doesn't. What is the best way to differentiate between the two? exp **{value(Microsoft.Connect.Api.Client.Tests.SearchQueryUnitTests+<>c__DisplayClass6).handle}** [System.Linq.Expressions.MemberExpression]: **{value(Microsoft.Connect.Api.Client.Tests.SearchQueryUnitTests+<>c__DisplayClass6).handle}** NodeType: MemberAccess Type: {Name = "String" FullName = "System.String"} vs exp {x.CreatedBy} [System.Linq.Expressions.MemberExpression]: {x.CreatedBy} NodeType: MemberAccess Type: {Name = "String" FullName = "System.String"}

  • Am I just not understanding TDD unit testing (Asp.Net MVC project)?

    - by KallDrexx
    I am trying to figure out how to correctly and efficiently unit test my Asp.net MVC project. When I started on this project I bought the Pro ASP.Net MVC, and with that book I learned about TDD and unit testing. After seeing the examples, and the fact that I work as a software engineer in QA in my current company, I was amazed at how awesome TDD seemed to be. So I started working on my project and went gun-ho writing unit tests for my database layer, business layer, and controllers. Everything got a unit test prior to implementation. At first I thought it was awesome, but then things started to go downhill. Here are the issues I started encountering: I ended up writing application code in order to make it possible for unit tests to be performed. I don't mean this in a good way as in my code was broken and I had to fix it so the unit test pass. I mean that abstracting out the database to a mock database is impossible due to the use of linq for data retrieval (using the generic repository pattern). The reason is that with linq-sql or linq-entities you can do joins just by doing: var objs = select p from _container.Projects select p.Objects; However, if you mock the database layer out, in order to have that linq pass the unit test you must change the linq to be var objs = select p from _container.Projects join o in _container.Objects on o.ProjectId equals p.Id select o; Not only does this mean you are changing your application logic just so you can unit test it, but you are making your code less efficient for the sole purpose of testability, and getting rid of a lot of advantages using an ORM has in the first place. Furthermore, since a lot of the IDs for my models are database generated, I proved to have to write additional code to handle the non-database tests since IDs were never generated and I had to still handle those cases for the unit tests to pass, yet they would never occur in real scenarios. Thus I ended up throwing out my database unit testing. Writing unit tests for controllers was easy as long as I was returning views. However, the major part of my application (and the one that would benefit most from unit testing) is a complicated ajax web application. For various reasons I decided to change the app from returning views to returning JSON with the data I needed. After this occurred my unit tests became extremely painful to write, as I have not found any good way to write unit tests for non-trivial json. After pounding my head and wasting a ton of time trying to find a good way to unit test the JSON, I gave up and deleted all of my controller unit tests (all controller actions are focused on this part of the app so far). So finally I was left with testing the Service layer (BLL). Right now I am using EF4, however I had this issue with linq-sql as well. I chose to do the EF4 model-first approach because to me, it makes sense to do it that way (define my business objects and let the framework figure out how to translate it into the sql backend). This was fine at the beginning but now it is becoming cumbersome due to relationships. For example say I have Project, User, and Object entities. One Object must be associated to a project, and a project must be associated to a user. This is not only a database specific rule, these are my business rules as well. However, say I want to do a unit test that I am able to save an object (for a simple example). I now have to do the following code just to make sure the save worked: User usr = new User { Name = "Me" }; _userService.SaveUser(usr); Project prj = new Project { Name = "Test Project", Owner = usr }; _projectService.SaveProject(prj); Object obj = new Object { Name = "Test Object" }; _objectService.SaveObject(obj); // Perform verifications There are many issues with having to do all this just to perform one unit test. There are several issues with this. For starters, if I add a new dependency, such as all projects must belong to a category, I must go into EVERY single unit test that references a project, add code to save the category then add code to add the category to the project. This can be a HUGE effort down the road for a very simple business logic change, and yet almost none of the unit tests I will be modifying for this requirement are actually meant to test that feature/requirement. If I then add verifications to my SaveProject method, so that projects cannot be saved unless they have a name with at least 5 characters, I then have to go through every Object and Project unit test to make sure that the new requirement doesn't make any unrelated unit tests fail. If there is an issue in the UserService.SaveUser() method it will cause all project, and object unit tests to fail and it the cause won't be immediately noticeable without having to dig through the exceptions. Thus I have removed all service layer unit tests from my project. I could go on and on, but so far I have not seen any way for unit testing to actually help me and not get in my way. I can see specific cases where I can, and probably will, implement unit tests, such as making sure my data verification methods work correctly, but those cases are few and far between. Some of my issues can probably be mitigated but not without adding extra layers to my application, and thus making more points of failure just so I can unit test. Thus I have no unit tests left in my code. Luckily I heavily use source control so I can get them back if I need but I just don't see the point. Everywhere on the internet I see people talking about how great TDD unit tests are, and I'm not just talking about the fanatical people. The few people who dismiss TDD/Unit tests give bad arguments claiming they are more efficient debugging by hand through the IDE, or that their coding skills are amazing that they don't need it. I recognize that both of those arguments are utter bullocks, especially for a project that needs to be maintainable by multiple developers, but any valid rebuttals to TDD seem to be few and far between. So the point of this post is to ask, am I just not understanding how to use TDD and automatic unit tests?

  • How to properly downcast in C# with a SWIG generated interface?

    - by JG
    I've got a very large and mature C++ code base that I'm trying to use SWIG on to generate a C# interface for. I cannot change the actual C++ code itself but we can use whatever SWIG offers in the way of extending/updating it. I'm facing an issue where a function C++ is written as such: A* SomeClass::next(A*) The caller might do something like: A* acurr = 0; while( (acurr = sc->next(acurr)) != 0 ){ if( acurr isoftype B ){ B* b = (B*)a; ...do some stuff with b.. } elseif( acurr isoftype C ) ... } Essentially, iterating through a container elements that depending on their true type, do something different. The SWIG generated C# layer for the "next" function unfortunately does the following: return new A(); So the calling code in C# land cannot determine if the returned object is actually a derived class or not, it actually appears to always be the base class (which does make sense). I've come across several solutions: Use the %extend SWIG keyword to add a method on an object and ultimately call dynamic_cast. The downside to this approach, as I see it, is that this requires you to know the inheritance hierarchy. In my case it is rather huge and I see this is as a maintenance issue. Use the %factory keyword to supply the method and the derived types and have SWIG automatically generate the dynamic_cast code. This appears to be a better solution that the first, however upon a deeper look it still requires you to hunt down all the methods and all the possible derived types it could return. Again, a huge maintenance issue. I wish I had a doc link for this but I can't find one. I found out about this functionality by looking through the example code that comes with SWIG. Create a C# method to create an instance of the derived object and transfer the cPtr to the new instance. While I consider this clumsy, it does work. See an example below. public static object castTo(object fromObj, Type toType) { object retval = null; BaseClass fromObj2 = fromObj as BaseClass; HandleRef hr = BaseClass.getCPtr(fromObj2); IntPtr cPtr = hr.Handle; object toObj = Activator.CreateInstance(toType, cPtr, false); // make sure it actually is what we think it is if (fromObj.GetType().IsInstanceOfType(toObj)) { return toObj; } return retval; } Are these really the options? And if I'm not willing to dig through all the existing functions and class derivations, then I'm left with #3? Any help would be appreciated.

  • Type problem with Observable.Create from Boo

    - by Tristan
    I'm trying to use Reactive Extensions from Boo and am running into type problems. Here's the basic example: def OnSubscribe(observer as IObservable[of string]) as callable: print "subscribing" def Dispose(): print "disposing" return Dispose observable = System.Linq.Observable.Create[of string](OnSubscribe) observer = System.Linq.Observer.Create[of string]({x as string | print x}) observable.Subscribe(observer) The Subscribe here gives a System.InvalidCastException: Cannot cast from source type to destination type. The issue appears to be with how I'm creating the observable, but I've struggled to see where the type problem arises from. Ideas?

  • Entity Framework 4 - Delay Loading Expensive Fields

    - by JohnnyO
    I know this same question was asked for Entity Framework 1, but now that Entity Framework 4 has come out, and Microsoft claims that it provides all of the features of Linq to Sql + more, does Entity Framework now support lazy loading expensive properties? In Linq to Sql, this is extremely easy. There's a Delay Loaded option on any property (accessible through the Designer) that can simply be toggled on or off. Is there something similar in Entity Framework? Thanks

  • How can I send multiple types of objects across Protobuf?

    - by cyclotis04
    I'm implementing a client-server application, and am looking into various ways to serialize and transmit data. I began working with Xml Serializers, which worked rather well, but generate data slowly, and make large objects, especially when they need to be sent over the net. So I started looking into Protobuf, and protobuf-net. My problem lies in the fact that protobuf doesn't sent type information with it. With Xml Serializers, I was able to build a wrapper which would send and receive any various (serializable) object over the same stream, since object serialized into Xml contain the type name of the object. ObjectSocket socket = new ObjectSocket(); socket.AddTypeHandler(typeof(string)); // Tells the socket the types socket.AddTypeHandler(typeof(int)); // of objects we will want socket.AddTypeHandler(typeof(bool)); // to send and receive. socket.AddTypeHandler(typeof(Person)); // When it gets data, it looks for socket.AddTypeHandler(typeof(Address)); // these types in the Xml, then uses // the appropriate serializer. socket.Connect(_host, _port); socket.Send(new Person() { ... }); socket.Send(new Address() { ... }); ... Object o = socket.Read(); Type oType = o.GetType(); if (oType == typeof(Person)) HandlePerson(o as Person); else if (oType == typeof(Address)) HandleAddress(o as Address); ... I've considered a few solutions to this, including creating a master "state" type class, which is the only type of object sent over my socket. This moves away from the functionality I've worked out with Xml Serializers, though, so I'd like to avoid that direction. The second option would be to wrap protobuf objects in some type of wrapper, which defines the type of object. (This wrapper would also include information such as packet ID, and destination.) It seems silly to use protobuf-net to serialize an object, then stick that stream between Xml tags, but I've considered it. Is there an easy way to get this functionality out of protobuf or protobuf-net? I've come up with a third solution, and posted it below, but if you have a better one, please post it too!

  • Flex Drag & Drop: Detecting when all data has been moved from source to destination

    - by Adam Tuttle
    I have two mx:TileList controls that I'm using to allow editing of objects in batch. The first contains a collection of all available data, and the 2nd contains the current batch. Both are bound to ArrayCollections, and using the native drag-n-drop functionality of the TileList control the data is moved from one ArrayCollection to the other when an object is dragged between them. I need to change the currentState to show & reset the batch manipulation controls when the batch count goes from 0 to n or n to 0 items. Based on the documentation, I would have thought that I should listen to the dragComplete event, but my testing shows that instead of firing after the data has been removed from the source ArrayCollection and added to the destination ArrayCollection, it fires (consistently) between these two actions. Both lists are similar to this: <mx:TileList id="srcList" dragEnabled="true" dropEnabled="true" dragMoveEnabled="true" dataProvider="{images}" dragComplete="handleDragComplete(event)" allowMultipleSelection="true" /> And here's the source of the handleDragComplete function: private function handleDragComplete(e:DragEvent):void{ trace(e.dragInitiator.name + '.dragComplete: batch.length=' + batch.length.toString()); trace(e.dragInitiator.name + '.dragComplete: images.length=' + images.length.toString()); if (batch.length > 0){ currentState = 'show'; }else{ currentState = ''; } } And lastly, here's some example output from running the code. These are all run one after the other. Case 1: The application loads with 10 objects in the first list and the batch is empty. I dragged 1 object from the source list to the batch list. srcList.dragComplete: batch.length=1 srcList.dragComplete: images.length=10 (Expected: 1,9) Clearly, the object has been added to the batch ArrayCollection but not removed from the source. Case 2: Now, I'll drag a 2nd object into the batch. srcList.dragComplete: batch.length=2 srcList.dragComplete: images.length=9 (Expected: 2,8) Firstly, we can see that images.length has changed, showing that the object that I dragged from the source list to the batch list was removed AFTER the dragComplete event fired. The same thing happens this time: The new object is added to the batch ArrayCollection (batch.length=2), the dragComplete event fires (running these traces), and then the object is removed from the source ArrayCollection. Case 3: Now, I'll drag both images from the batch list back to their original location in the source list. batchList.dragComplete: batch.length=2 batchList.dragComplete: images.length=10 (Expected: 0,10) We can see that batch.length hasn't gone down, but the source images array is back at its original length of 10. QUESTION: Am I doing something wrong? Is there another event I could listen for? (Note: I tried both DragExit and DragDrop, just to be sure, and those behave as expected, but are not what I need.) Or is there another way to get the data that I want? Or... have I found a bug in the SDK?

  • Best Performing ORM for .NET

    - by steve_c
    I'm curious if anyone has done any performance comparisons with any or all of the main players in the .NET ORM space. Specifically I'm interested in comparisons between the following: Linq to SQL NHibernate LLBL Gen Entity Framework Though it seems people don't really consider Linq to SQL a true ORM, I am still including it in this list. Some performance metrics would be nice to see.
