• Why can't dash search find a program by its full name?

  For some applications, dash search comes up empty when searching by the application's full name. When typing the first couple of letters, it works. I wonder why... MuseScore is a fine example. When I search for "muse" in the dash search, MuseScore is found. When I search for "musescore", nothing is found. This behavior makes me distrustful of the dash search... I wonder how often it misses installed programs... I like to be able to trust the software tools I'm using.

• How do I download a corrupted package again?

  Ubuntu 12.04 can't install Firefox 13 update, because the package is corrupted. While attempting to install, returns this error (I translated it from my language to English). /var/cache/apt/archives/firefox_13.0+build1-0ubuntu0.12.04.1_i386.deb W: Waited for dpkg --assert-multi-arch but was not there - dpkgGo (10: There are no "child" processes). I can tell that the package at /var/cache/apt/archives/firefox_13.0+build1-0ubuntu0.12.04.1_i386.deb is corrupted, but even as admin, I can't delete it in order to be downloaded again. • Windows gets progressively slower over time, why doesn't Ubuntu?

  I, and many other previous Windows users notice that the computer seems to get progressively slower over time. I bought a leapfrog crammer only to find it installed process that sat there waiting for me to plug the crammer in so it could run the software. It took up three percent of the CPU twenty-four seven, seven day a week! This is one of the main reasons I left Windows. But, Ubuntu doesn't seem to slow down over time at all. Does Ubuntu allow programs to install background programs like the leapfrog crammer did to sit there like a leech and suck away at resources? Could someone explain why Windows tends to get slower over time, and is Ubuntu vulnrable to this too? Thanks for any help, this is puzzling me.

  i program in python. i want to know if a program in python will work for ms word since ms word is not open source. the program basically changes words like ms word already does BUT it changes words based of off a list you write, which from what i know ms word doesnt do. if it does, just let me know. if there is a related program that is needed for a program in python or any language to work with a closed source software, jsut let me know.b also you can link to a phython specific place to ask phython related question if you know of one since im going to have a lot more in the future

• I need advice on creating animal 3D walk cycles in XNA

  I want to purchase a number of 3D models from TurboSquid and animate them in an XNA game. I wrote a lot of games from 1985-1999 and have recently become involved with XNA. Now I would like to port one of my old games to the XBOX. I do have a background in 3D animation; but that was years ago. What is the current method for animating a walk cycle with a 3D model and using it inside XNA? Is there a book, software or a tutorial that you can recommend? • When to use C over C++, and C++ over C?

  I've been introduced to Computer Science for a little over a year now, and from my experience it seems that C and C++ are both considered one of the "ultrafast" languages out there, whereas others such as Python and such scripting languages are usually deemed somewhat slower. But I've also seen many cases where a software project or even a small one would interleave files where a certain number n of those files would be written in C, and a certain number m of those files would be written in C++. (I also noticed that C++ files almost always have corresponding headers, while C files not so much). But my main point of inquiry is to get a general sense of intuition on when it is appropriate to use C over C++, and when it is better to use C++ over C. Other than the facts that (1) C++ is object-oriented whereas C is not, and (2) the syntaxes are very similar, and C++ was intentionally created to resemble C in many ways, I am not sure what their differences are. It seems to me that they are (almost) perfectly interchangeable in many domains. So it would be appreciated if someone could clear up the situation! Thanks

  This question is directed more toward employers and graduate student advisors/professors but all opinions are welcome. What do you find is a common weakness of new hires and/or new grad students? Is it entirely variable dependent on the student and his or her university? Is there a particular skill or skillset that you wish new hires/researchers had expertise in and how can we remedey this deficiency? I realize that this question is general and really encapsulates two questions, one more about the weaknesses of new software engineers and one about the weaknesses of new researchers. However, both types of people tend to come from similar courses of study so I'm wondering if there is any overlap. Note: I am not a professor but I'm interested in how best to revise the undergraduate curriculum in CS.

  I know in advance that people are going to see this question and think "free Red Bull." But I am actually looking for the best way to tie rewards for developers to the company's long-term goals. For example, assuming a team is working on the same software product, would it be best to reward each developer based on the condition of the final product? They are a team after all, and this will ensure that they are all working towards the common goal of getting the product out. • Auto-provisioning hosting via API

  I've built a sort of 'software as a service' website package for a specific industry. What I am looking to do is create a payment gateway that allows users to subscribe-- and once the subscription is active, it would auto-provision a web hosting plan for them (a shared account on a server, probably in a chroot'd environment so each user would be insulated from others). Ideally it would auto-install a CMS as well. Tons of web hosts provide a simple reseller plan where I could manually create all the users' hosting accounts-- but so far none that I've found allow you to do this via API. Is there a way to do this short of writing custom shell scripts on something like an EC2 platform? I'd prefer to leave all the server maintenance in the hands of dedicated support staff rather than having to manually handle updates, backups, etc. Thanks for any tips.

IIRC, my ISP issues dynamic addresses so I may need to register with a (DNS server?) - not sure about this. Last I knew, Photoshop still has the "web safe" yield icon[1] on it's color picker. Are web safe colors still a concern? • Getting Started Quickly

  If you're interested in using Ops Center, you'll want to get up and running as quickly and effectively as possible. One way to do this would be to work your way through the documentation library - use the Linux or Oracle Solaris install guides, then go through the Feature Guide and Admin Guide to start using the software. They're thorough, but they're a lot of reading. But if you're looking to install a simple deployment quickly, and you don't want to do all of the configuration work right off the bat, you can use the Quick Start Guide. It's a streamlined procedure that runs you through installing a single Enterprise Controller and co-located Proxy Controller, and then shows you how to discover assets quickly. Once you've discovered these assets, it describes how to use the analytics feature to view their performance, and use monitoring to keep track of their statuses and health. You'll have to do some additional configuration to use features like OS provisioning, OS updates, and virtualization, but the Quick Start guide gives you an overview of how to install and start using features quickly.

  I am a software developer(sharepoint developer) with total 3 years of experience.Though using out of the box sharepoint excites me, i have aversion to code. i kinda cant put my brains in coding. i have my eyes on MBA now(only reason is to get rid of code). I wanted to rethink on this and need your expert advice and suggestions. As i am working currently in a hot skill(sharepoint 2013) technology, is it a good thought to go ahead and do MBA and change my career, or should i start liking what i do?? • Magento not responding to payment gateway notifications fast enough or at all?

  Some of our customers are getting to the confirmation of payment step in purchasing from our Magento store, and then they are getting a timeout error, where the SagePay payment gateway is trying to contact our server to tell it that a payment was successful (or not…) but it cannot contact our server, or cannot get a response from our server in a timely manner, and then the payment/order is being cancelled. I've raised this question to my hosting company, but all they told me was: "This is down to the way the software is configured on your server" This is currently a Magento 1.4.0.1 standard installation as far as payment gateways are concerned. What on earth could this statement mean? Is there some configuration that I need to do to make Magento listen to these requests and respond properly?
