  • Improve Performance of char.IsWhiteSpace for ASCII inputs in .NET 3.5

    IsNullOrWhiteSpace is a new method introduced in string class in .NET 4.0. While this is a very useful method in string based processing, I attempted to implement it in .NET 3.5 using char.IsWhiteSpace() . I have found significant performance penalty using this method which I replaced later on, with my version. The following code takes about 20.6074219 seconds in my machine whereas my implementation of char.IsWhiteSpace takes about 1/4 less time 15.8271485 seconds only.   • Recursion in F#

    Things are slowly coming together – I was able to look at a bit of F# code and intuitively know what it was going to do (yay)… So today I saw a blog post by Bob Palmer on Fibonacci numbers in F# which inspired me to look at bit into recursion. First the C# example… class Program { public static void CountDown(int n) { switch (n) { case 0: Console.WriteLine("End of Count"); break; default: Console.WriteLine(n); CountDown(n-1); break; } } static void Main(string[] args) { CountDown(10); Console.ReadLine(); } }   In F#, the equivalent would look something like this… open System let rec CountDown n = match n with | 0 -> Console.WriteLine("End of Count"); | n -> Console.WriteLine(n); CountDown (n-1); CountDown 10 Console.ReadLine()   Pretty simple stuff. With F# you when making recursive calls you need to explicitly declare that the function is recursive with the “rec” keyword. Otherwise the code is pretty easy to read and self explanatory.

  • Best CPUs for speeding up compiling times of C++ w/ DistGCC

    I'm putting together a distributed build farm with DistGCC to speed up our teams compile times and just looking for thoughts on which processors to use in the hosts. Are we going to get a noticeable decrease in time using 8 cores vs. 4-hyperthreaded cores? Big difference in time between i7 and Xeon? etc, etc. Just need advice from people who've put together kick-a build clusters. We've got a majority of the normal things to speed up builds in place (pre-compiled headers, ccache, local gigabit connections between them, tons of ram, etc) so please just give advice on the best processor to use. And money is a factor, but anythings doable if the performance increase is noticeable. Thanks. Jay EDIT: Although any advice IS welcome, please refrain from "Do this first" posts as we're not planning on skimping on things like SSD, maxed out RAM, etc. My personal system is a iMac Quad-core i5 with 8GB of RAM. When I build our project locally, my processor floats around 99-100% a majority of the time, which makes me assume it is a bottleneck, even if you made everything else faster. My ram on the other hand doesn't even get close to maxing out. It's also worth noting that I did research this, however every discussion I could find was primarily for gaming machines, which is obviously a different beast in usage. These machines won't even have monitors or anything but integrated graphics since they have one purpose: Build freakin fast. (hopefully)

  • Can I use Server Monitor with a non-server Mac?

    I have a computer I use as a simple file and web server. I am simply desiring to be able to monitor load, traffic, memory usage, etc via Server Monitor. I have also downloaded an app for my iPhone which does the same thing, but it uses the same protocol that Server Monitor does. Is it possible to get Server Monitor to recognize my non-server box as a server so I can monitor this information? For reference, I am running 10.4.ll on this PPC box. Thanks in advance!

  • PHP invalid image's and error handling

    Using PHP's Image and GD functions you can use the following method to finally output the php image imagepng($image); Sometimes, for whatever reason the image may not be displayed typically the error is not with the image but with the actual php functions not executing successfully. However this causes a blank image to be returned which doesn't help me.   • UITextField with the lookup

    Hello, I would like to achive the same functinoanlity in the UUTextField control as Google search web site (which uses Ajax for this): as user start typing, list of suggestion searches is shown. Then more letteres you type, suggestion list changes. So imaging I have array of words: Apple Abc Aman As user types A, all thress suggesions are shown, if user type one more letter p, then Apple is suggested. How would I do something like this? Mail type of applicatins do it, when receipent name is typed in the To: edit control I guess I can use UITableView with the search, is it correct approach?

  • What to log when an exception occurs?

I see a lot of the above in the code I work with. In these cases, I always have to talk to the person who experienced the error to find out what they were doing, step through the code, and try to reproduce the error. Is there any best practices or ways I can minimize all this extra work? Should I log the parameters in each method like this? Logger.Log("Params: " + appetizer + "," + mainCourse + "," + dessert, ex); Is there a better way to log the current environment? If I do it this way, will I need to write out all this stuff for each method I have in my application? Are there any best practices concerning scenarios like this?

  • Ninject giving NullReferenceException

    I'm using asp.net MVC 2 and Ninject 2. The setup is very simple. Controller calls service that calls repository. In my controller I use inject to instantiate the service classes with no problem. But the service classes don't instantiate the repositories, giving me NullReferenceException. public class BaseController : Controller { [Inject] public IRoundService roundService { get; set; } } This works. But then this does not... public class BaseService { [Inject] public IRoundRepository roundRepository { get; set; } } Giving a NullReferenceException, when I try to use the roundRepository in my RoundService class.   • getting part of an image with javascript

    Hi all, i want to ask that, is it possible to show any part of image in img tag (with pixels) via Javascript. I mean, i'll prepare a big image (e.g. 32x320 pixels) and i'll define starting position (X,Y , e.g. 0,32) and width/height (e.g. 32,32), so script will show second (32x32 pixel) part of main image..   • iPhone: Best Method for Passing Data to and from a Server

    I am developing an iPhone application that downloads data from a website. The website database is implemented in SQL and the site itself uses the classic ASP interface. I am unsure as to which method would be best for transferring data to and from the server. Both JSON and SOAP require XML processing and I'm not sure how that affects performance or which of those two is best. What would be the best method in general for data transfer given the server configuration we currently have? I very new to this field and I'm a bit confused. Any help would be appreciated.

  • HttpWebRequest Cookie weirdness

    I'm sure I must be doing something wrong. But can't for the life of me figure out what is going on. I have a problem where it seems that the HttpWebRequest class in the framework is not correctly parsing the cookies from a web response.   • Firefox jquery flicker bug problem

I'm having problems with a flicker of the screen in firefox; It is related a filtering script... I have a website that is a one page vertical scroll; with different anchors to define sections and a smooth scroll script to make it pretty...
